Three Chords and the Truth Billy Snipes…
By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Grace Askew… It’s been kind of an exciting week. That hard rain on Sunday was glorious. I was at the Back Porch watching Grace Askew (Memphis, TN) when it hit. We all huddled under the palapa bar and Grace just kept on playing. Her bluesy/ boozie voice went perfect with the thunder. Everything and everybody got Grace Askew from a little wet but we didn’t melt. Grace Memphis played the Back Porch last Askew is a different kind of soul. She Sunday. spends months at a time crisscrossing the nation, going from gig to gig all by herself. She said that’s how she does her best writing. He songs are pretty deep and dark but you can’t take your eyes off of her. The comparisons to Tom Waits have merit. At only 26, she’s an impressive gal.
I want to give a shout out to my pal Billy Snipes. I hadn’t seen Billy in a while and stopped by the Tarpon Ice House last weekend when I was passing by and saw his name on the marquee. I’m glad I did. He’s written a new crop of songs and added Billy Snipes played the some impressive Tarpon Ice House last sounds to his bag Friday night. of tricks. I really like the direction he’s headed lately. It’s a blend of reggae, folk and country and I think he’s found a unique sound. Let’s hear it for one of the good guys. Billy Snipes is a one man band that sure fills a room up. Have fun in Terlingua Billy, and tell Al Barlow and all the guys “Howdy” for us.
Melissa Brooke…
Green Light Pistol…
The Melissa Brooke Band played Giggity’s last Saturday night.
The family band, Green Light Pistol, played the Back Porch last Friday. I also saw another impressive show this weekend… Green Light Pistol (Burleson, TX) played the Porch on Friday. This is the Wallace family band with four sisters (Brooke on fiddle, Bethany on keys, Sally on mandolin and Madalyn on percussion), a brother (Caleb on stand-up bass), a father (didn’t catch his name but he plays a pretty mean trumpet) and a fiancé (Chad Fincher on guitar). All five of the siblings sing and sing well. Fincher takes the songwriting credits. When the four girls are up front on the mics, a harmony emerges that only sisters can produce. I was reminded of the beautiful Morales Sisters: Lisa and Roberta. Green Light’s sound is a kind of an up tempo blend of alt rock and roots/folk. I especially liked the original song dedicated to our armed forces; Hup, Two, Three, Four… really strong. These kids are special and it’s going to be a joy watching them mature. I see big things ahead. They are tight, driven and show-stopping good with songs so compelling I had a goofy smile on my face the whole time they were on stage. Throw adorable in there, too. With some more wood shedding, I’d put them in the same league with Della Mae, Dirty River Boys, Folk Family Revival and blacktopGYPSY.
Another local talent that’s been making some big waves lately is our own Melissa Brooke (Port Aransas, TX). She played Giggity’s last Saturday and really had the joint jumping. Her band, with guitarist Jason Ealey, bassist Sam Allred and drummer Larry Lee Hayes are excellent and with Mellissa up front, I think they have a winner. She’s just released a new single, You Could Have Heard a Teardrop, and continues to stay on the country music charts and open for such stars as Kevin Fowler and Rick Trevino. Stay the course young lady… you really got it going on and the fans really seem to love you! She’ll be back at Giggity’s on the 12th.
DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend… Tonight, Thursday, October 3rd, the fabulous Dirty River Boys (El Paso, TX) will play Brewster Street. I happen to think these guys hung the moon. They are about the best thing
