“Unpossible”

Sports Talk

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon

If you were to push the words unbelievable and impossible together you just might get “unpossible.” It’s the only way I can describe the 1983 NCAA basketball upset of N.C. State over the University of Houston. Jim Valvano, known as Coach “V,” was a young, loud, brash, New York Italian basketball coach who owned enough nose to mind everybody’s business; if he ever fell face first, it would two days to dig him out. Likeable and excitable, Valvano initially became known more for splitting his pants while jumping up and down during a game than winning. My mother, Edith Purvis, worked at N.C. State for over 25 years. She introduced me to Coach Valvano. He had so much energy; it was like meeting three people at once.

on the Wolfpack. N.C. State won 6760 and then waited to see who they would play. The game they watched with the rest of the nation was incredible.

Houston outlasted Denny Crum’s Louisville Cardinals, led by brothers Rodney and Scooter McCray, in what most thought was the championship game. I have been asked many times regarding the special happenings that I remember during this almost quarter century of high level college basketball. There are many things that stand out, I am thinking seriously about writing a book. In the meantime, read on to assist you in keeping updated with the progress of “March Madness.” To me, the “Final Four” is a bigger happening than the “Super Bowl.” Hang in there for the rest and last of the story of the “2014 Big Dance.”

Moon Sport Talk Final FourConnecticut, Florida, Kentucky & Wisconsin I thought you might be interested in three takes on the Final Four. 1) By The Numbers (another approach). 2) The families of the coaches are often neglected…It takes a special person to be the wife of a coach and the children are subject to a way of life comparable to no other with the possible exception of children of a career military Father. I am personally acutely aware of the facts, having been one and/or both for a majority of my adulthood. My personal salute to these wives and children, you are the best. 3) Are they really Student Athletes?

Final Four 2014: By the Numbers-The NCAA Tournament’s Final Weekend College basketball fans love numbers. Just ask Ken Pomeroy, the college science professor who has achieved fame for the statistical analysis he provides on college basketball teams. Adjusted defensive percentages, effective field-goal percentages, offensive rebounding rates, usage rates, rates of left-handed players who swish 15-footers after chugging an Arctic Blast Gatorade, percentages of coaches who win games on Tuesdays when it’s below 53 degrees—Pomeroy has a stat for darn near everything, and his minions love him for it. Then there are the other 90 percent of college basketball fans.

That’s us, the simpletons. To us, turning college basketball into calculus is a turnoff. Basic math is just fine, thanks. For that sector of the hoops world, here are some numbers to know heading into the Final Four. 5, 3, 5, 7: Combined number of freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior starters for the teams in the Final Four. All five freshmen are from Kentucky. 4.5: Average seed of the Final Four participants. Florida is the only No. 1 seed in the field. Wisconsin is a No. 2 seed, Connecticut is a 7 and Kentucky is an 8. 30: Consecutive wins by Florida entering the NCAA tournament. The Gators haven’t lost since falling at Connecticut on Dec. 2, when Shabazz Napier hit a shot at the buzzer to win it for the Huskies. 9: Number of times Kentucky’s John Calipari (five) and Florida’s Billy Donovan (four) have reached the Final Four.

The Final Four Schedule: Semi-Final-Saturday, April 5th 5:09 PM, TBS, Announcers: Jim Nantz, Greg Anthony, Steve Kerr, Tracy Wolfson Semi-Final-Saturday, April 5th 7:49 PM, TBS, Announcers: Jim Nantz, Greg Anthony, Steve Kerr, Tracy Wolfson Championship Final-Monday,Sunday, April 7th , Approximately 7 pm (TBD), TBS, Announcers: Jim Nantz, Greg Anthony, Steve Kerr, Tracy Wolfson Finally we have reached the final four. TDLR Helping Military Service Members, Veterans, and Spouses Get Licensed to Work in Texas The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) recently updated its licensing procedures to help military service members and veterans become licensed to work in Texas using their military service, training, and education. The procedure also helps military spouses become licensed to work in Texas if they hold an equivalent license issued in or by another state. These changes were authorized by bills enacted in 2013 by the 83rd Texas Legislature. “TDLR values the contributions of all who serve or have served in our nation’s armed forces and of the spouses of military service members,” said Bill Kuntz, TDLR Executive Director. “These new licensing changes allow us to help service members, veterans, and spouses get licensed and get to work in Texas.” TDLR currently accepts verified military experience for licenses in these programs:

It will be transported to the site at a yet to be determined date and will then either be moved 3000 feet overland from the Aquarius side of the park, or a canal already planned for the building’s route will be dug at that time. The alternative is to move the building through the canal on the north side of Commodores adjacent to the park site. Its final resting place will be at the south end of the park.

Meet at pavilion in Nature Preserve for a leisurely ride through the preserve. It’s not a race, just a ride. Bring your camera if you wish to capture those Kodak moments. This free ride is held the second and fourth Monday of each month, courtesy of the Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department.

If the building moves overland it will be conveyed by the use of an inflatable “bag” which is inflated to five pounds pressure per square-inch. When finished it will be developed with a nautical theme.

Sunset Sounds

• Architectural Barriers

The Sunset Sounds starts back up this month. The free outdoor concert is offered to the public April through October, courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department.

• Barbering • Electricians • Polygraph Examiners; and • Water Well Drillers and Pump Installers. Beginning May 1, 2014, TDLR will issue any master electrician and journeyman electrician applicant a temporary license, license by endorsement, or license by reciprocity if the applicant holds a substantially equivalent similar license issued in or by another state. Applicants will become fully licensed in Texas once they meet all state experience and examination requirements.

Water Exchange Culverts at Encantada. Estimates are being gathered by the City of Corpus Christi for the removal of the three tubular culverts designed to allow the movement of water through the canal under Encantada. The culverts have been clogged with sand for many years and it is the opinion of engineers that if they are cleaned out and not replaced that they will quickly refill and remain useless.

Once a month, a variety of music is played by different artists. It is held at the Patsy Jones Amphitheater in Roberts Point Park in Port Aransas. You can watch the sun set over the Corpus Christi Ship Channel as music floods the park during each concert from 7-9pm Bring a chair or blanket, any food, drink or libations, friends and family. The event is dog and kid friendly. The playground is within site of the amphitheater, and dogs must be leashed.

The plan, which is being pushed by Council members Colleen McIntyre and Chad McGill, is to replace the existing culverts with a single large box culvert which would not collect sand. The aim is to put the project on the bond package projected to go before voters later this year. There are currently no Island projects on the proposed bond project list, this would be the first.

2014 Scheduled Dates:

A military spouse is eligible to obtain a TDLR program occupational license if they hold a substantially equivalent license issued in or by another state and their application is given priority for expedited processing.. This applies to the spouse of a person who currently serves in an active or reserve component of the United States armed forces, in the National Guard, or in a state military force.

April 18: The Free Beer Band … The Free Beer Band consists of Steve Goldstein, Crawford Brown, Daddy Dale West - A hippie, hillbilly, country, rock, blues band

If successful the enlarged passage would allow for the movement of water, pushed by the prevailing southeast wind, down the Gypsy canal into and through the opening under the water exchange bridge planned for SPID/Park Road 22.

May 9: Triggerfish June 20: Aloha Dave and the Tourists July 11: TBA

Water Exchange Bridge on SPID/Park Road 22. City Engineer Dan Biles told the ISAC Monday that he has received the final design for the layout of the bridge and expects to be able to provide copies to the ISAC and the public in the near future. Sources say the current plans call for three forty-foot spans under the bridge; the center for water passage with fourteen feet of clearance between the water and the bridge, and two forty-foot spans on each side of the canal for pedestrian and cart passage. The project is funded with $8.1 million from a 2004 bond package. Planners have said previously they expect construction of the bridge to begin by the end of 2014 and take about nine months to complete.

The City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department now is offering Zumba classes in the water at the Port Aransas Community Pool. Meet at 11 am on Saturdays to join in this riveting exercise. Pool is located at 700 Clark Pkwy, off Ross Avenue.

Removal of cars from Michael J. Ellis Beach in front of the seawall. Islander Bob Currie, who has been pushing for the city to implement a plan approved by citywide voters in 2008 to prohibit cars from driving on the beach along the seawall has requested the answer to three questions from the City Attorney’s office: 1) Can the beach there be closed to traffic under the current city ordinance without the inclusion of two traffic lanes called for in the ordinance? 2) Does the city have the responsibility to eliminate driving on the beach there after accepting the parking lot paid for and donated to the city by landowners with their understanding that once it opened vehicles would be removed from the beach? 3) Where is the city property line along the seawall?

The classes will be lead by certified instructor Bonney Maurer. Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements. Zumba’s choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo and martial arts. Squats and lunges are also included. The exercise in the water provides an opportunity for more people to do the class, as it is easier on joints in the water. Cost is $2 per session.

Birding on the Boardwalk All year long, the Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department provides Birding on the Boardwalk every Wednesday at 9 am. This guided birding tour is for anyone of any age, novice to expert.

Currie said city staff has informed him they will have an answer to those questions by April 22.

Local guide Nan Dietert will share her knowledge, point out the different birds and other inhabitants at Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center at end of Ross Avenue. FREE!

ATVs on the beach. The City Attorney’s Office told the ISAC that under state law the city cannot allow certain (lower speed) ATVs on the beach while banning those which have higher top speeds. Under a new state law ATVs are allowed on Texas beaches but are not legal on public streets. The ISAC and the city are considering what, if any, prohibition to put on the use of ATVs on city beaches. The City of Port Aransas has already banned their use on beaches there. The Nueces County Coastal Park Board has said they will follow the lead of the City of Corpus Christi on the subject. No timetable has been set for a resolution, meanwhile, ATVs are legal on county beaches, and beaches in the City of Corpus Christi as long as the driver has a driver’s license. The use of golf carts on Island streets and beaches will not be affected.

Seeking 10 Actors/Actresses for ‘On Death’s Doorstep’ By Brent Rourk

Windstorm Insurance. ISAC member Greg Smith told the committee a lawsuit has been filed in Austin by a homeowner in an attempt to force the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association to require the Texas insurance industry to pay out $600 million in claims for Hurricane Ike. TWIA, through ratepayers, has paid out $430 million in claims and an additional $150 million is expected to be paid in the future. The suit claims the insurance companies are liable for the money and if paid by them, would leave $400 million in money available for claims, enough to cover the costs of a major storm without an increase in rates.

The Port Aransas Community Theatre has scheduled auditions for ‘On Death’s Doorstep’, a popular one act play, on Sunday, April 6th at 2:00 P.M. at the theatre. Written by Walter Ellis, the play is a comical murder mystery with a heavy dose of finger pointing, innuendoes, and surprises. Salle Ellis, who last directed the Christmas play ‘Ebby Scrooge’ at PACT, will be directing the play. The play centers around 7 actors who are mindfully preparing for a play, however, the leading man mysteriously dies of puffer fish poisoning. The local sheriff determines that it was not an accident, but murder, and the investigation begins amidst intense quibbling and finger pointing with lots of laughs along the way.

Mon-Thurs 8am-7pm • Friday 8am – 4pm Member hours (with keytag): 4am-11pm every day (361) 949-3298 – (361) 947-7732 www.islandfitnesscc.com

City Council Members at ISAC meetings. ISAC is an advisory committee to the Corpus Christi City Council but until last month council members had been prohibited by the City Attorney’s Office from attending ISAC meetings. That changed at the ISAC’s March meeting when McGill attended the meeting under risk of arrest and removal. No arrest or removal occurred and as a result three council members attended the April meeting this week; McGill, who is running for an At-Large seat on the council in November, McIntyre who is the current District 4 member and represents The Island, and At-Large member Lillian Riojas.

This will be an opportunity for everybody to learn the techniques for acting, directing and assisting back stage. All of the actors selected for this play will learn the “how to” of producing a short play. PACT is located at 2327 Highway 361, Port Aransas, Texas. Call PACT at 361-749-6036 for questions about the audition.

There will also be 200 overflow parking spots for peak times located on grass at the park, and an additional 400 spaces on the driving range if needed. The parking will be free and according to Schexnailder, “The onsite parking will be sufficient that park visitors should never need to park offsite or on a public street.”

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Merle Haggard…

definitely loves his Lefty Frizzell. He ended the show, of course, with Okie From Muscogee, but not before he called the soundman down for too much high end in the mix, by asking him “Can’t you hear that or are you deef?” That’s my report… Merle was easy on the cameras and hard on the soundman…and all in all it was a good week.

Bo Porter & Al Barlow…

The amazing Dirty River Boys from El Paso will play Brewster Street this Saturday. are nothing short of exciting and are definitely a DO NOT MISS. Also on Saturday, Melissa Brooke (Port Aransas, TX) will bring her rocking cowgirl show to the Back Porch and winners of last year’s Ziegfest Battle of the Bands, Jake Ward and the Coastal Riders, will play Giggity’s. Plus Uel Jackson will be at Shorty’s and Bushbullit will be at Stingrays.

The legendary Merle Haggard performed at Selena Auditorium last Sunday. His wife Theresa Ann Lane sings backup and his 21 year old son, Ben, is on lead guitar

Al Barlow and Bo Porter performed last Friday at Shorty’s My pal, Bo Porter (Lake Travis, TX) made it down from the Hill Country and played a show at Shorty’s last Friday night. Bo hosts the picker’s circle in Luckenbach regularly and wanted some of the Port A pickers to join him. I put out a quick call to some of the usual suspects and by show time, the place was packed and we were treated to short sets by Carol Elliott, Mike Williams, Tiffany Duckworth and Tom Doran. Bo seemed to really enjoy that. I know the audience did. About two hours into the show, another old friend from New Braunsfel, Al Barlow, showed up and joined Bo on stage. These two have done many song swaps together. But just as Barlow took the stage and was getting his bearings, one of the island locals, J.R. Bradley (the boat washer guy) walked right up on stage, grabbed Barlow by the ears and gave him a big kiss right on the lips, then turned around and walked off like nothing had happened. Barlow was clearly stunned and his eyes got as big as hub caps. The audience erupted into a chorus of laughter and all I can say is, man, did that loosen the show up. It was classic and I’m still laughing about it. You got to stay on your toes around here.

It’s a good week when I can say I saw Merle Haggard, Bo Porter, Al Barlow, Todd Dorn and J.T. Colfire. Merle was incredible. I went with Rockin’ Dale Rankin, which seemed only fitting. Rankin has a special kinship to Oklahoma. Merle had a big ten piece band as you would expect. His wife, Theresa, sang backup and his 21 year old son, Ben, played lead guitar. There was one Texan in the group, Floyd Domino, the piano player. Domino is an old Austin boy who used to play with Asleep At the Wheel. He’s been around forever and a day… one of the best around. I used to see him in the Antone’s camp. He did a lot of studio work around town. It was interesting to watch the American Bank Center ushers as they lightly enforced the “no photos” policy while the concert was going on. I had a media pass and was told that I could only take pictures between the fourth and sixth song and only from the sound booth area, which was a pretty far distance from the stage. My little pocket camera was definitely the wrong equipment. When Merle first came on, there was a sea of DO NOT MISS LIST cell phone cameras that lit up the place and a Coming this weekend… flood of people who walked right up to the front This Friday, April 4th, a couple of really talented and took as many pics as they wanted. One guy even jumped up and sat on the stage right in singer-songwriters from Austin, Mandy front of Merle to take a selfie. I had to think that Rowden and Billy Abel will play Shorty’s. this loose attitude with the photos had to be at Mandy is a hoot and she and Billy have real the instruction of Mr. Haggard. When I went to chemistry. Their shows are a lot of laughs and the John Prine/Lyle Lovett show last year, the I adore their taste in music. And, when Mandy ushers were in “camera-Nazi” mode and I had picks up a fiddle or mandolin or accordion you several of them tell me to stop taking pictures or never know where the music might go. This they would confiscate my camera. My point is, is definitely a show worth checking out. On th Merle Haggard didn’t mind a bit if you wanted Saturday, the 5 , the fabulous Dirty River Boys (Austin, TX) will play a show with Pear Ratz to take his picture. He’s been on that stage for at Brewster Street. I think the 50 years and if you care Dirty River Boys are arguably enough about him to the hottest Americana/Outlaw pay $70 a ticket, then Folk act on the circuit right by golly, take your now. I’ve seen them four picture. About half way or five times in the past through the show, I couple of years and am more waltzed right up to the impressed every time. Their front of the stage and percussionist, Travis Sterns, took eight or ten shots is a whirling Dervish. He’s of him at close range. rapid fire and full of soul. I’m It felt great. Thanks not sure I’ve ever seen anyone Merle, for allowing me work a cajon the way he does. to do that. You’re real These guys are originally from people. Merle played El Paso (which might explain about 90 minutes. He a lot of things). They’ve got played many of his Chris Jordan, Stevie Start and Dan a gentle four part harmony hits and also a good number of B-sides. He Kashola at the weekly Open Jam last and an exhaustive energy Monday at Giggity’s that won’t let go. These guys

Coming next weekend SandFest 2014…

SandFest 2014 will be going on April 11-13. The April 11-13 weekend is a whopper! First of all, it’s SandFest 2014 and that means about 100,000 people will be invading our little island for three rockin’ days of music, food and sand. A virtual army of professional and amateur sand sculptors will be creating art before your very eyes. The music line-up goes like this: on Friday we have Jared Clark, Mike Stites, and Melissa Brooke. On Saturday its Rae Ann Reed, Triggerfish, Mike Milligan and Passing Strangers. On Sunday it’s Ken Yarbrough & Mike Jones, The Sand Band, and Kara & the Dam Band. I’m playing stage manager this year, so stop by and say hi.

Patrice Pike…

Shelley King will play Shorty’s on April 11th. Father James Derkits explains, “I remember standing outside a 21+ club in Houston when I was 19, trying to hear a few lines float out the door from Patrice Pike’s band, Sister 7. I was there with the friend who turned me onto her live album “Free Love, Nickel Beer.” Patrice was kind enough to stop and say hello after the show. I was enthralled by her music and lyrics, and noticed the deep spirituality of the music as much as I appreciated her authenticity and passion when she performed. I became friends with Patrice while I was living in Houston. During a show she mentioned her Grace Foundation which raises scholarships for young adult survivors of homelessness. I stuck around to ask her more about it and find out if I could help. Since I’ve moved to Port Aransas, I’ve hoped to help bring Patrice Pike and her band down for a show, and I am grateful to fellow Patrice fans Kip Shannon, owner of the Gaff, and Bridget Brundrett, who is underwriting the show, for making it happen! I’m also very thrilled that Patrice will be joining us on Palm Sunday at Trinity by the Sea to share one of her songs during the service. Life’s journeys of love, friendship, and music never cease to amaze me.”
