Reactive foods and elimination diets

A 13

By Chad Peters Hold onto your menu everybody and start to look closer. A new type of diet is in town and it’s all the rage. You are about to hear about it at barbecues, at the gym, and your doctor’s office and you will see it nonstop in every magazine you subscribe to.

Six months later, granola doesn’t hit me much –yep, most of the time, reactive foods are reversible, not a true allergy, just something that’s not wanted in your system at this time… weird yes, but I make better choices for me because of this info.

The hot new buzzword for 2014/15 is elimination diets.

The problem with the way foods react is inflammation. Yes! The biggest HEADLINE word for health in the last 2 years and sure to be the main issue treated worldwide over the next 1 years. Look, it’s not that a little inflammation

OK, so what are these, what does it mean and is it just a new fad? Short answer – Yes, It is something you should be familiar with on a baseline level and there may be some success with the basic idea of these diets especially for people with long-term inflammatory issues. My own brother had a lot of success treating his rheumatoid issues that took him from a “peak of life high school wrestling coach” to some days needing a cane just to get around.

Many of these plans, and there are thousands of them out right now, focus on a new If a gluten free, Paleo diet that a caveman would be proud way of looking at health by of works for you, fine, but a Padre Pizza and a Jalepeno “eliminating” foods that your Margarita at DragonFly tastes good sometimes! body treats basically like an allergen. You eat it and your body reacts. Typical food reactions are will kill you, but with food, and especially increased water retention to try and process without knowing what is causing it, is chronic the food through and almost an instant inflammation (the next biggest buzz word in small histamine reaction. Nothing works not exactly – the proper term is reactive food like it should – not energy creation, fat removal, and it is a bit different than a common allergic cancer fighting cells, muscle growth, healing reaction to a bee sting or cedar oils. capabilities, hormones, NOTHING! You Some times it is the amount and frequency of have to get rid of inflammation to let the body the foods. For instance steak might be fine for heal correctly. This is why real diseases like a person, but have it two days in a row and you rheumatoid, psoriasis, cholesterol problems, get the reaction. Sound crazy? Actually it’s diabetes are all jumping on the inflammation fairly common. Your body just doesn’t like a bandwagon for treatment options. certain product at certain levels and bugs out. AND THIS IS WHY there is a million new Probably, at some level, you’ve already been drugs, ads, diets and trainers focusing on it. flirting with some version of a reactive food Because it’s worth Million$$. plan already. Like I stated earlier, I like the idea, I like the I’m sure you or a friend has heard of grains, plans but ladies and gentlemen, if I come off especially gluten causing problems? These “Wait Dr. Peters, did you plans aren’t new, just newly packaged and oatmeal? – NO! say Dairy was BAD?, NO wait, Just ALL marketed. GRAINS?” NO NO NO! Please don’t throw a And I will tell you, they aren’t all bunk. This hand grenade at a problem that needs a hammer idea of reactive foods is quite real and backed and nail. by real science. I have tried a 20-30 day trial Again, as I’ve said over and over in the health myself and learned a ton about my body (and thank God Steak wasn’t a positive hit for me.) I field, it’s not the idea that’s wrong, it’s the make better decisions because of the knowledge practical application… (ex: removing all grains I have about what reacts with my body and in when it’s a gluten or rice deal. The Port Aransas museum is looking for a few good folks…. to be Docents. Noun: docent; plural noun: docents; from latin, Docentum present participle of docere (“to teach”). 1. A person who acts as a guide, typically on a voluntary basis, in a museum, art gallery, or zoo. 2. Notes from The Island

Toy Collector Boats Needed

By Maybeth Christensen I’ve noticed some trash cans being held together with duct tape. The City will replace the cans at no charge, but you need to call the City – 826-CITY (2489). Have your City utility bill handy in order to provide your route information. While I’m on trash cans, remember to clean them out once in awhile. They really can smell, especially in the hot weather. Also, the rule is – the cans can be setout Thursday night and must be taken back behind the fence or placed in your garage by the end of the day on Friday. If you are going to be out of town, talk with your neighbor to work something out. DO NOT leave them out all week!

Boat stickers In order to park at one of our boat ramps, you need to have a sticker on your vehicle. If you are towing a trailer, you need a current sticker on your trailer. Both of these stickers are available to purchase at our office. We give you a warning the first time we find a vehicle or trailer without the stickers, but be aware, the second time we find the violation – you will be towed. We especially have been having a problem recently at the Cartegena boat ramp. For those of you who are using the ramp as the pickup location to shuttle the party-goers to the ski basin, please advise your “guests” that this parking lot requires a sticker. If they park on the street, please also advise them to be aware of how they are parking. That is, do not block driveways and watch out for people who are walking on the street. I had a call from one of our residents who was nearly hit by a driver who was just not paying attention and then gave the walker a not very nice one finger Texas salute.

Hurricane ID By the way, the sticker is NOT to identify you to return to the Island in case we had to evacuate due to a hurricane. If you have your Island address on your driver’s license, you should have 1 additional item with your Island address. That could be your auto insurance card, utility bill or similar item. If you do not have your Island address on your driver’s license, you need one of the additional items, a photo ID and a re-entry card which is available at our office. Hurricane season is now here. Do you have a current hurricane plan? If not, get to work on it now, before a hurricane makes it into the Gulf.

Recipe of the Week

By Arlan Andrews, Sr. arlan@thingsto.com

Writers & Writing So a fellow at Snoopy’s asked me last week, “Is that Padre Moon column your full-time paying job?” After choking on my adult refreshment, I allowed as to how skinny I would be if my income depended on writing, much less just this column. My destiny has not yet allowed such a thing to occur. His next question was, “Then why do you do it? Isn’t writing hard?” This is the inquiry all writers get. I usually reply, “No, writing is easy; selling what you write is the hard part.”

Do We Do It for Love? The real answer is, of course, that all of us writers are egotists, and we derive ego-boosting gratification from seeing our names and photos in print – not to mention pounding our pet peeves or hawking the great idea du jour. (Some inksters will deny this vehemently, but they are the ones who make a living at it.) If one can earn any money -- especially a decent income -- while stroking the ego, why then so much the better. (Rock stars say the same thing, but with much bigger egos and paychecks.) Even in a local venue such as our local Island paper Moon, we columnists have the opportunity to spout off on unlimited topics, from national politics to short stories to our grandkids to our horses to our motorcycles to our foreign travels to our neighbors’ unleashed dogs to our community’s unleashed politicians to pet diseases to turtle convocations to brain chemistry to psychological troubles and traumas to hospital misadventures to fishing contests to weather commentary to sand castles to sargassum to boat repair and disrepair to Island Independence to local restaurants to local bars to local beach babes and even the occasional poem.

Two full trucks and a van of toys leave PIYC after the 2013 La Posada By Brent Rourk Bright lights, boat parades, and Christmas will be here sooner than we think and once again the Padre Island Yacht Club will sponsor 2 boat parades and the Toys for Tots collection – It is all about the kids! Members of the Padre Island Yacht Club are busy with planning for the La Posada Boat Parade, the Kick-off Party at Scuttlebutt’s, the Christmas Tree Lighting at Port Royal, and the Toys for Tots collections. Additional activities are also being considered. Check out http://www.laposadacc.com/ for updated La Posada information.

What other vocation lets your mind run wild, and then gives you a place to put it down so that others may read it and laugh or weep or take it to the bird cage or wrap fish in it?

Do We Do It for Money?

One of the biggest needs this year will be getting additional collector boats to help pick up toys on Friday or Saturday night or both nights during the boat parades (December 12th and 13th). With the increase in the number of toys the PIYC really needs several more boats to help pick up toys from the docks of the houses along the canals. This is a tremendously important way of helping kids and everybody involved in Toys for Tots.

When I attend writers’ conventions, the topics of advances for novels and percentages for agents and word rates for magazines typically take front stage when we get down to the serious business of writing as a business. The average income for all writers recently was around $4000 per year, far below minimum wage. Weighing in the millions made by Danielle Steele, Stephen King, Tom Clancy, Dean Koontz and even my former Albuquerque acquaintance, the late Tony Hillerman, that leaves most of us way down the ladder.

We want this to be another record year in terms of collecting toys and need several more collector boats to help pick up the toys from the decks and docks and then transfer those toys to the larger transfer boats that tote the toys to the Padre Island Yacht Club.

No, it is not just for the money, though the occasional paycheck for a story or article does limp in. But even when it does, I for one feel a slight tinge of Protestant-work-ethic guilt, since writing has never been work, never been a chore, never been a have-to thing with me. Quite the contrary – it is an obsession, a condition, an addiction, one that must be satisfied or else. Rather like mental nicotine, if you will. (Probably more like mental heroin, but we have to be careful here.)

Great Shrimp Dish By Itself, With Veggies or on Pasta By Brent Rourk Ingredients: 3 to 4 tsp extra virgin olive oil 1 1/4 pounds med or large raw shrimp, peeled and deveined (leave the tails on) 8 garlic cloves, crushed or minced 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup low sodium chicken broth 1/2 cup dry white wine (or non-alcoholic wine) 1/4 cup + 1 T minced parsley or green onion (you can use cilantro for a more Mexican twist) 1/4 tsp salt substitute (flavored if you like) 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper (or white pepper) 12 lemon slices Preparation: In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil. Add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, about a minute. Sauté the shrimp until just pink, about 2-3 minutes. Quickly transfer the shrimp to a platter or covered dish and keep them warm. In the skillet, combine the broth, wine, lemon juice, 1/4 cup of the parsley (or onion), the salt and pepper; and bring it to a boil. Boil uncovered, until the sauce is reduced by half. Spoon the sauce over the shrimp. Serve garnished with the lemon slices and sprinkle with the remaining tablespoon of parsley/onion. Enjoy by itself or with pasta or rice. The recipe contains no butter or salt but is very tasty. Option 1: Add snow peas either whole or cut lengthwise while the sauce is in the last couple of minutes of reducing. Or as a Mexican twist, cut strips of poblano peppers and add them to the reducing sauce along with cumin and oregano. option 2: for a thicker and richer sauce, add cream if you are not adding snow peas or poblano peppers – great over pasta. It still retains all of the flavors of the other ingredients while adding a creamy flavor and giving it a thicker texture for pasta or rice.z

Guardians Rescue Looking for Volunteers By Terri Cotten Guardians Rescue is a foster-based rescue on The Island. We are in need of volunteers to help on the weekends at our adoption events that are usually held on Sat/Sun at Ace Hardware.

Collector boats will only need to attend a couple of meetings where times, routes, and duties will be outlined. Interested boaters should contact Brent Rourk at brentrourk@yahoo.com or 361-244-7603. In the meantime, circle the dates on your calendars for the La Posada festivities and remember the toys.

Because We Have To “How do you know if you’re a writer?” people ask me. “Easy,” says I. “Writers write! If you don’t, you’re not. If you do, you are.” Some of us began writing as soon as we could make letters with a crayon or a pencil – “publishing” our own comic books, little neighborhood newspapers, anything that we could create on paper and show to others. When that first portable typewriter came into my life at age Other 15, it was a miracle. I began to crank out poorly-written short stories. Eventually I sent some in. Never mind the years of rejection letters, the editorial comments good and bad. It was writing! Color Services starting at

After a mere decade and a half of sporadic efforts, some of that output began to sell. Computers have now minimized the physical labor of writing, so it is almost literally a breeze. (Of course now I can’t wait for direct mind-to-video technology, so that what I see in my mind can go directly to the DVD -- with discreet editing, of course.)

Because We Can New writers are often surprised to find that few accomplishments bring as much instant prestige as being published. Not many people at a party will ever care if you are a world-class engineer, a renowned doctor, a decorated soldier, a successful lawyer or a top-ranked salesman. But say you are a “writer” and there’s almost always some kind of response from almost everyone, whether it is admiration, envy or surprise. But a dirty little secret is that writing is really no more difficult or refined a skill than that of a plumber, a mechanic, a golfer or a sailor. And not always as difficult -- or as valuable -- a skill, either.

Some areas that help is needed: set-up/break-down kennels, talking to potential adopters, walking dogs, cleaning cages, etc. Perfect for students for community service, retirees or anyone who wants to make a difference and help save lives. State Agencies Undergo Sunset Review Process – Texas Facilities Commission By Todd Hunter, District 32

One of the subjects that I like to highlight for our readers is the sunset review process. As a reminder, in order to identify and eliminate government waste, duplication and general inefficiencies in state agencies, the Texas Legislature established the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission in 1977. The sunset review process is designed to review each of these agencies every twelve years. This review is done by taking up a certain number of the state agencies each session when the Texas Legislature convenes. In this week’s article, we are going to review the Texas Facilities Commission. The Texas Facilities Commission was originally created in 1919 by the 36th Texas Legislature as the State Board of Control. The State Board of Control was then replaced in 1979 by the State Purchasing and General Services Commission. In 1991, this agency again underwent a name change to become the General Services Commission. The agency maintained this name until 2001 when the 77th Texas Legislature abolished the General Service Commission and replaced it with the Texas Building and Procurement Commission. In 2007, the Texas Legislature removed the agency’s statewide procurement function and renamed it the Texas Facilities Commission. As you can see, since the agency’s initial creation in 1919, the agency has under gone multiple name changes and has had its duties and responsibilities changed and transferred to and from other state agencies. Today, the Texas Facilities Commission is tasked with and responsible for over 100 state agencies, located in roughly more than 290 cities throughout the State of Texas. It provides for the planning, provision and management of these agencies’ facilities. Currently, the Texas Facilities Commission is responsible for over 28.4 million square feet of leased and state owned facilities space which support approximately 62,000 state employees. The expense associated with the maintenance and

operation of these spaces cost roughly $230 million dollars annually. In Corpus Christi, the Texas Facilities Commission is responsible for the Carlos F. Truan National Resource Center which is a state owned building. The Texas Facilities Commission is overseen by a board composed of seven commissioners. Three of the Commissioners are appointed by the Texas Governor, two are chosen from a list of nominees provided by the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives to the Texas Governor, and two are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor. The day to day operations of the agency are overseen by the executive director who employs staff and discharges the duties and responsibilities of the agency as directed by the board or Texas statute. If you are interested in learning more about the Texas Facilities Commission, you can go to their website at http://www.tfc.state.tx.us/. Some of the other agencies we will review in the upcoming weeks include the State Office of Administrative Hearings, the Texas Education Agency, the Health and Human Services Commission, the Department of State Health Services, the Department of Aging and Disabilities Services, the Workforce Commission as well as a number of other agencies currently going through the sunset review process. If you would like to learn more on your own about the Sunset Advisory Commission or other agencies undergoing the sunset review process, you can go to www.sunset.state.tx.us . If you have any questions regarding the Texas Facilities Commission or the sunset review process, please don’t hesitate to contact either my Capitol or District office. My offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603). Rep. Hunter represents Nueces (Part) County. SPORTS Is Anyone Sitting Here?

Sports Talk

Joe Louis

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon

It was a Saturday afternoon, at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston, Texas, home of the Houston Astros. I had two weekend season tickets in the last row behind home plate. On this particular day, a fellow dressed in a suit and tie approached me and asked, “Is anyone sitting here?” “No,” I said, “have a seat.” He was elderly, stood over 6 feet tall, slender and wore glasses, with gray hair. I was used to seeing people all dressed up, as the seats I had were first class and somewhat expensive. Over the years, I had sat close by many different baseball scouts and former players from other teams and once met President George Herbert Walker Bush and his wife Barbara; along with Astros owner, Drayton McLain. My new friend asked if I knew a lot about baseball.” I said, “I think so.” Then he said, “I see you like to keep score,” and I nodded a yes. “Do you know who holds the record for grand slams?” he asked. I said, “Yes, it’s Lou Gehrig with 23.” “No,” he said, “I mean for the Astros. Who holds the record for grand slams for the Astros?” I did not know, but was willing to guess. I offered up Jimmy Wynn, Jose Cruz, and Rusty Staub; and then I said, “I don’t know, who was it?” He said, “It’s me.” Now I’m embarrassed, especially since I’ve had a radio sports talk show for many years and really do spend a lot of time on baseball. So I said, “And who are you?” He grinned like a catfish, stuck out his hand and said, “I’m Bob Aspromonte.”

home run for him in his next game. Once the press caught wind of the request, added pressure was applied in interview after interview. As fate would have it, in Bob Aspromonte’s last at-bat, with Billy Bradley listening to the game on the radio in the hospital, Bob hit a home run. Houston announcer Bob Elston screamed, “This one is for you, Billy Bradley.” Interestingly, the following year, Aspromonte visited little Billy one more time in the hospital, and again Billy asked Bob to hit him another home run. Bob Aspromonte delivered this time with a grand slam. Luckily for Bob, Billy regained part of his sight, but this is not the end of the story.

On July 26, 1963, after receiving partial sight from further surgery, little Billy Bradley attended his first Houston Colt 45’s baseball game. He had asked Bob Aspromonte to hit him another home run. Billy was finally going to see his hero play in person. “When he asked again, I said, ‘Billy you’re really pushing your luck. Will you settle for two base hits?’” said Bob. In the first inning, Bob came to the plate with the bases loaded against the New York Mets. Pitching for the Mets was Tracy Stallard, the same guy who had given up Roger Maris’s 61st home run in 1961, to break Babe Ruth’s single season homerun record. Apsromonte hit another grand slam over the left field wall, and the place went crazy. Bob was crying; Billy was crying. The fans were crying. The game was stopped so Billy could come down on the field, where the two embraced. Bob gave Bob Aspromonte Billy the baseball. All was right in the world; or was it?

I remembered the name and shook his hand while he snickered at me. I knew a bit about his background and asked him for his autograph. He was actually with his brother Ken, who had played professionally for six different clubs before becoming the Manager of the Cleveland Indians. They both had seats down in front of me. I remembered a story I had heard years ago about Bob and a kid who was blind. I asked him to tell me the tale.

Bob Aspromonte signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1957 at the age of 18. He was from Brooklyn, New York, and went to high school with Sandy Koufax. He played third base from 1962-1968 and became one of Houston’s Colt 45’s first baseball stars. He set the National League record for errorless games with 57, at third base. Bob hit 60 home runs during his thirteen-year career and in 1971; he became the last Brooklyn Dodger to retire. In 1962, a nine-year-old kid named Billy Bradley, living in Arkansas, was struck by lightning and blinded, while playing on a baseball diamond. He was moved to Methodist Hospital in Houston for eye surgery and listened to the Colt 45’s games on the radio. His favorite player in baseball was Houston’s Bob Aspromonte. Billy called the Colt 45’s and asked to meet Aspromonte. Bob was told what Billy had said and decided to visit Billy in the hospital. Bob took Billy Bradley a signed ball and a glove. Billy was blindfolded and could not see anything, including Bob. Shades of Babe Ruth--Billy Bradley asked Bob to hit a

This was not the end of the story. In 1974, during a freak accident, Bob Aspromonte was blinded when a car battery blew up in his face. The same surgeon who had restored Billy Bradley’s vision performed surgery on Bob Aspromonte. The surgery gave Bob back about 40% of his sight, but required him to wear glasses. Bob Aspromonte hit a teamrecord six grand slams for the Astros and became a successful Budweiser Distributor, and Billy Bradley became an executive with Merrill Lynch Insurance Company in Memphis, Tennessee. They still visit with each other quite often. So, that’s the story of how I met Bob Aspromonte. Andy Purvis is a local author and radio personality. Port Aransas Wins Birding Awards During Great Texas Birding Classic Tournament The Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce sponsored team, the Port Aransas Spoonbills, once again won the Big Sit! award for the Central Coast division during the recent state-wide Great Texas Birding Classic. The Spoonbills, catching sight of the most species of birds during a 24 hour period, swooped in to “sit” and spotted 107 species this year. The team consisted of team leaders Joan and Scott Holt who were joined by Mikael Behrens, Suzette Freeman, Nick Lorette, Tony Amos, Bobby Sherwood, Julie Findley, and Glenn Martin. The group gathered at their traditional spot, the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center Observation Tower, May 3, with temperatures a little chilly. Joan hoped her bright serape wouldn’t “scare the birds away” but indeed it didn’t.

The Chamber of Commerce also sponsored the Seaside Sparrows. Team members Joan & Scott Holt and Kyle Jones, experimented this year by birding in a new category called All Ages: Sunrise to Noon. The team placed third by spotting 108 species, a great number for a short period of time. Sightings were at several Port Aransas locations including the Nature Preserve, North Jetty beach, Paradise Pond, Birding Center and finished by boat in Piper

Channel. Kyle Jones has become a great birder, having been mentored by Joan Holt for many years. Two new children’s teams participated in the Roughwings Regional Tournament division this year. Toth’s Birders, sponsored by the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce, placed fourth in the tournament spotting 82 feathered species on May 9. Brayden Martin, Casey Feil, Maxwell DeHart, and Thomas McGrady were on the team along with their mentors Julie Findley and Becky Feil. Woody’s Warblers, sponsored by Woody’s Sports Center, spotted almost that many on April 27 with 79 species, placing fifth.

By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com Dotson’s Note: As a kid in the 30’s, by far my favorite sport was boxing. My dad, uncles, male cousins and I gathered around the”Philco” (our big floor model radio), once a week to listen to the “Gillette Cavalcade of Sports” boxing match of the week. Joe Louis was my idol. One of the most shocking moments of my life was when the German, Max Schmeling, knocked out the “Brown Bomber” in the 12th round of their scheduled 15 round bout in Yankee Stadium June 19, 1936. The rematch came on June 22, 1938 – one year from the day Louis had won the World Heavyweight title. The fighters met once again in a soldout Yankee Stadium in New York City. Among the more than 70,000 fans in attendance were Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks, Gary Cooper, Gregory Peck, and J. Edgar Hoover. The fight drew gate receipts of $1,015,012. A million dollar gate! At the time I had virtually no knowledge of the real story which follows.

keyed and circumspect, and he would have to be marketed as representing all Americans, not just African-Americans. Mike Jacobs recognized that American boxing crowds, and particularly the numerous Jewish fans, ached to see both Schmeling and Primo Carnera, an Italian heavyweight and symbol of fascist might, defeated by an American fighter. In the early 1930s, Schmeling and Carnera had each briefly held the world title. The first fight Jacobs lined up for Joe Louis was in 1935, with Carnera, whom Louis knocked out in six rounds. The same year Louis knocked out Max Baer in the fourth round, setting up a showdown with Schmeling to determine who would be in line to fight the reigning champion, Jim Braddock.

Louis-Schmeling

Joe Louis-Professional Boxer, An American Hero

Professional boxing was among the few integrated sports in the United States, and prize fighter Joe Louis was a hero to American Blacks. On June 19, 1936, after rain postponed the fight a day, the undefeated Louis was knocked out by Germany’s Max Schmeling. German Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels proclaimed Schmeling’s victory a triumph for Germany and Hitlerism. The Nazi weekly journal Das Schwarze Korps (The Black Corps) commented: “Schmeling’s victory was not only sport. It was a question of prestige for our race.” Schmeling opposed the Nazis and ultimately developed a personal friendship with Louis. In fact, Schmeling paid for a part of the American boxer’s funeral arrangements in 1981. In boxing – and in American sport – few titles carry as much symbolic importance as heavyweight champion of the world. A symbol of virility and power, the title has become a source of pride for ethnic, religious and racial groups. In the 1920s and 1930s, American Jewish champions such as Benny Leonard and Barney Ross became heroes to their people. Perhaps the most important boxing champion American Jewry has embraced, however, was Joe Louis, a non-Jewish African-American, who in June of 1938 knocked out Max Schmeling, Nazi Germany’s best heavyweight. American Jewry claimed Louis’s victory as their own, a refutation of Hitler’s argument that German Aryans constituted a “master race.” Art Buchwald, who grew up in New York, recalled that as a child in 1938 he was sure of three things: “Franklin Roosevelt was going to save the economy . . . Joe DiMaggio was going to beat Babe Ruth’s record [and] Joe Louis was going to save us from the Germans.” Louis might not have fought for the heavyweight title if a New York Jewish promoter, Mike Jacobs, chose not to handle his fights. Born on the Lower East Side in the 1880s, by the mid 1930s “Uncle Mike” Jacobs had become the sports leading promoter. In 1942 alone he promoted 250 boxing cards, and in the course of his career staged 61 championship fights. He excelled at developing a fighter’s public identity. Jacobs recognized Louis’s boxing talent, but also knew that, as a black man, Louis would have a difficult – if not impossible – time getting a title shot. Jack Johnson, the flamboyant and self-confident previous black champion, won the heavyweight crown in 1908, but his relationships with white women created a backlash that led to Johnson’s conviction on a morals charge. The next black champion, if there were to be one, would have to be low-

While many in the Jewish public longed for Louis — or anyone else — to conquer Schmeling and embarrass Hitler, some Jewish groups opposed giving Schmeling a platform. Several of them applied pressure on Mike Jacobs to cancel the Louis-Schmeling fight. Jacobs replied that Louis would defeat Schmeling, giving the lie to Nazi propaganda. More than 45,000 fans filled Yankee Stadium expecting to see the “Brown Bomber” defeat Schmeling. They left disappointed. After a lopsided battering, Louis was knocked out in the twelfth round. Hitler cabled Schmeling to congratulate him on his “splendid patriotic achievement.” Schmeling had earned the right to fight for Braddock’s crown, but Jacobs and Braddock’s Jewish manager, Joe Gould, decided the American public would rather not run the risk of seeing Schmeling, as one sportswriter put it, “take the title back to Germany and present it to Adolf Hitler for the German Museum.” Jacobs guaranteed Braddock a whopping $500,000 payday to fight Louis instead, and the match was made. Louis knocked out Braddock and became champion. As historian Peter Levine observes, the fight “launched [Louis’s] reign as one of boxing’s greatest champions and secured his place as a hero of an oppressed American black population. It also set the scene for one more battle with Max Schmeling that enhanced Louis’s status as a hero for all Americans.” One might add: especially for Jews. The second battle between the two men, in June 1938, was promoted as a battle between democracy and fascism. When Schmeling’s ship docked in New York harbor it was met by hundreds of anti-fascist pickets. The NonPartisan Anti-Nazi League and the American Jewish Congress urged Jacobs to cancel the fight. Jacobs offered to donate 10 per cent of the gate to groups helping Jewish refugees. Louis proclaimed that he was “backing up America against Germany,” and promised he would be “going to town” against Schmeling. Louis delivered on his boast, knocking out Schmeling in the first round. Americans cheered, and African Americans and Jews celebrated the loudest. In their eyes, Louis had vindicated American democracy. In 1946, after the world had learned how brutally far the Nazis had carried their racial theories, a story in the American Hebrew praised Mike Jacobs for giving Joe Louis the opportunity to strike “a terrific blow to the theory of race supremacy.” While Schmeling’s defeat did not save European Jewry from the Nazi killing machine, Louis’s knockout helped American Jews believe that Germans could be defeated by a member of an American minority. The lesson was not lost on the hundreds of thousands of American Jews who fought against Germany in World War II. The facts are that Schmeling opposed the Nazis and ultimately developed a personal friendship with Louis. In fact, Schmeling paid for a part of the American boxer’s funeral arrangements in 1981. Three Chords and the Truth

Island Moon

The week in review…

By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Schlitterbahn to open music venues… I hope everyone enjoyed the ten short minutes of springtime because from now until October we will all suffer. The good news is, we have a big ole ocean out there and a shiny new water park to cool our heels in. And word on the street is that our shiny new water park, aka: Schlitterbahn, will have several live music venues in the complex. My source tells me that they will be varying sizes, the largest of which will accommodate up to 2500 people. That tells me that we’ll probably be seeing some big acts heading our way in the near future, and being that the corporation is based out of New Braunfels, I’m sensing Texas Country will probably be the genre of choice. More will be revealed…

Make a joyful sound…

Jake Ward and the Coast Riders played Giggity’s on Saturday night The live music schedule was off the hook last week. I had the pleasure of catching shows by the Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX), Melissa Brooke (Ft. Worth, TX), Mike Blakely (Buchanan Dam, TX), Noel McKay & Brennen Leigh (Austin, TX), The Derailers (Austin, TX), Jake Ward (Corpus Christi, TX) and Uel Jackson (Port Aransas, TX). I don’t know where to start. It was all great. I learned that the Thieves have a new CD coming out

The Derailers played the Back Porch on Saturday They have started alternating Stevie Start, Uel Jackson and Ruben Limas each week to keep the jam fresh. Uel took it this week and the players who showed up: John Ramsey (drums), Tom Doran (guitar and vocals), Chris Jordan (bass), Sierra Jackson (sizzling vocals), Paul Taylor (piano and vocals), Brandon Stiewig (lead guitar), etc, showed astonishing talent. I love it when players, who have never played together before, find a groove and nail it. I really dig the direction this jam is taking.

The Port A Mischief Posse stages an impromptu concert with Billy Snipes at the old Tarpon Ice House I got a coconut telegraph alert last week that Tiffany Tuesday had put a call out to the underground Port A Mischief Posse and there Noel McKay and Brennen Leigh played was a conspiracy in the making. Their last Shorty’s last Saturday night known adventure was a raid on the mayor’s house last Fourth of July where unrequested yard decorations were distributed in broad daylight. shortly with eight original tunes on it. These The call I received last week was Tiffany’s cry guys just keep getting better and better. Melissa for help. It seems she’s been feeling nostalgic played Giggity’s on Friday and it was her first about all the many nights we played music at show back on the island since relocating to our beloved (and now defunct) Tarpon Ice Ft. Worth. She told me that the move has been House and decided to organize a flash mob of good for her career and she’s networking with sorts and stage a quick impromptu concert at the some big names up there. She’ll be back at Ice House. The only problem is the new owners Giggity’s the first weekend in August. Mike hadn’t showed up yet since Paul Fain sold the Blakely had a well attended show at the Back place and we not only didn’t have a clue who Porch and sounded great as always. He had master guitarist, Larry Nye, in tow (as they were, we had no idea if they usual) and really set the country tone for would approve of our musical the next night when famed Austin honky trespassing or not. So in the spirit tonkers, The Derailers, roared into town. of the Mischief Posse, we threw Actually, country was the tone of choice caution to the wind and showed just about everywhere last weekend. Noel up anyway. We had a bare bones McKay and Brennen Leigh also put on sound system and a generator, a stellar performance at Shorty’s. Their but soon discovered they’d left material is all original and witty, with the electricity on, so we set up intricate bluegrass harmonies and dual in the very front by the street guitar pickin’—definitely listening room where we had a little light and caliber—which didn’t always mix well some picnic tables. I’m not sure with the rowdy crowd at Shorty’s. They what the charges are for stealing stuck with it though and gave us a great electricity but we plugged in performance. So did Jake Ward over at anyway and started singing. Giggity’s. Jake, you might remember, Our pals Billy Snipes and Sean won the battle of the bands competition Hunter were there to help make some joyful noise and when we Melissa Brooke at Brewster Street last October to be did, about 20 people showed played Giggity’s included in the ZiegFest line-up. Since up out of nowhere and gathered last Friday night then, they’ve enlisted the talents of Independent Thieves’ fiddle player, around and cheered us on. It was Owen Fitzsimmons, and their spot on very spontaneous and totally Port A. After about a half an hour or so, we all decided not to push Americana sound has exploded. Jake Ward and our luck anymore and disbanded as quickly the Coast Riders are definitely a band to keep as we came. Nobody got hurt and nobody got an eye on. Finally, on Monday, the Open Jam at Giggity’s is going through a little facelift. arrested. Actually, it was all good clean fun.

David King, Garret Wieland and Owen Fitzsimmon of Independent Thieves at Shorty’s last weekend DO NOT MISS LIST Ray Wiley Hubbard… The Snake Man himself, Ray Wiley Hubbard (Wimberley, TX) will play the Black Marlin Bar and Grill at the golf course in Port A this Saturday. This will be the first installment of a ten week concert series the new venue will host each Saturday night. Other artists slated to perform include Junior Brown, Hal Ketchum, The Rankin Twins, The Tejas Brothers, Jason Eady, Brian Keane and others. Ray Wiley is considered an elder statesman of the Texas

music world. He’s been around before Redneck Mothers had red necks. His wit and groove are nothing short of genius. Hubbard plays a rhythmic bottleneck, usually in an open key, that’s somewhere between blues, country and gospel… I just call it folk. He idolized Lightning Hopkins and Tony Joe White… not to mention vintage Ray Wylie Hubbard guitars and tube amps. His onstage banter will play the Black is fast and loose and Marlin on Saturday. hilarious. It’s also a little frightening. Ray Wiley is required reading. They are only going to sell 150 tickets to this show so you better get off your wallet pretty quick. www.blackmarlinbarandgrill.com

Coming this weekend… Well, it’s going to be another big week in live music. Reckless Kelly and Josh Ward are playing Brewster tonight, Thursday the 5th. On Friday, my pals Mandy Rowen & Billy Abel (Austin, TX) return to Shorty’s. They flat knocked it out of the park when they played there a few weeks back. Love these guys! Also on Friday, blues rocker J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX), will play Giggity’s, Uel Jackson will play the Gaff, Jake Ward will play the Executive Surf Club and one of the hottest guitar pickers around, Davin James (Houston, TX) will play the Back Porch. (I always mention his master guitar skills because he’s so much more that a country singer… reminds me of Brad Paisley or Keith Urban). On Saturday, the Tejas Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) will play the Porch, Jef “With One F” Wilson will play the Gaff, the reigning king of TexMex, Joe King Carrasco will play a show at the Surf Club with the Krayolas. The Krayolas are a teen band grown up out of San Antonio that features the great Hector Saldano. That’s some great booking to match Joe King with the Krayolas. And finally on Saturday, a new band fronted by Debra ScottBrown called Dreaming In Colors (Corpus Christi, TX) will debut at Giggity’s.

On the horizon… And on the horizon, look for upcoming shows by Randy Rogers, Wade Bowen, Stoney LaRue, Shelley King, Thieving Birds, Uncle Lucius, The Whiskey Sisters, HOBO, The Rocky Bottom String Band, Carter Sampson, The Knotty Pines and Shinyribs… stay tuned.
