Sapodilla Bay to Great Sandy Cay By Captain Sail Offcourse In Sapodilla Bay after checking in with Customs, the yachts in our group moved to the north side of Provo to Turtle Cove Marina on Grace Bay. Inside the cut harbor I meet Anne Pinder and found out about the Island. In 1966, a Swedish surveyor named Bengt Soderqvist met with Fritz Luddington, who had been flying over the island for many years. These two shared their interests with other developers of vision. The government allowed the group to lease/purchase some 4,000 acres on Providencials. In October of 1966, the seven investors, of the ‘Seven Dwarfs’ as they were called, arrived on Providencials on a boat named the Seven Dwarfs. Tommy Coleman was the advance man for Fritz Luddington and his Provident Ltd. Group. The five other investors were Julia Barber, Roger Morton, Peter Tompson, Theodore Roosevelt III, and Richard DuPont. Provident Ltd. Had certain
we left the Marina and headed east to the Leeward Going Through, which is a small channel that runs beside the Conch Farm. The channel starts at way point of 21 degrees 48.60’ n. and 72 degrees 07.30’ w. and carries four and a half feet at high water, so we had to move to make it across before the tide went out. On the first turn to the south the Catamaran ran aground on a sand bar and I went around them while they worked to get unstuck from the sandbar. They got free and in a short time came around me and we took off to the south running at a good clip to beat the 3 foot tidal fall. We were about a mile from the deeper water when I ran across a coral head and it ripped my rudder off, I stopped my boat, dropped sails, and deployed my anchor. I got off the boat and walked back to my rudder in 4 feet of water and found it had broken the rudder shaft. We were only 3 miles from the Caicos Marina and Boatyard which has a large travel lift, so my friends on the Cat got a line tied to me and towed me to the shipyard. There I paid for my haul out and bid my friends a good trip to the Dominican Republic..
I went to Caribbean Marine and Diesel and arranged for them to fix my rudder and left it in their Sailing off of Great Sandy Cay hands. I then went to the ships store and bought everything I obligations to meet to satisfy the government in needed for a bottom job, paint, sand paper, order to receive the acreage, and these were met brushes rollers, tape, ECT... I spent the next by 1971, scarcely five years from the inception week next to Captain Bill scraping and sanding of the project. This included the dredging of on the bottom of my boat, for a total cost of my Seller’s Pond and the creation of a channel to repair o $1,100.00 U.S.. When I launched the the sea, the building of roads to connect the boat, she sailed beautifully and I joined up with three settlements of Blue Hills, The Bight, and another yacht headed across the bank to Six Five Cays, the construction of a hotel and a jetty Hill Cays. There was Great snorkeling between at Five Cays, and the employment of a certain the cays over reefs filled with fish. That night number of the local population. has it that Spanish treasure is buried on the cay and it is claimed that a British Captain Delaney recovered $150,000.00 in pirate treasure from a cave on Great Sand Cay in 1850. He claimed he left behind $10,000.00 for an entrepreneurial individual to find. This story was told around England and was the Basis for the book Treasure Island. Even the maps look like this island all the way to the Looking Glass Rock on the south east end of the island. Just across from the Looking Glass Rock on the western shore is the cave. Hardest game of all There is no doubt that baseball is the hardest game of them all to excel in both mentally and physically. The pressure to succeed allows us to doubt our own abilities. Sometimes, the hardest thing in life to overcome is ourselves; our own superstitions. In creating routines, we convince ourselves that we have given ourselves an edge that allows us to play better. Is it true? Some swear by it and others just laugh, but with success we form habits, some good, and some bad. Superstitions come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and include everything from food to equipment and clothes.
Cincinnati Reds second baseman Joe Morgan would cock and re-cock his right elbow continuously, while waiting in the batter’s box for the next pitch. Everyone knew about Wade Boggs’ superstition; he always ate chicken before every game. Red Sox teammate Nomar Garciaparra’s toe tap between every pitch became the conversation piece when he played. Larry Walker was crazy about the #3. Not only did he wear #33 but he was married at 3:33 PM on November 3rd. Walker always took three practice swings before an at-bat and purchased thirty-three tickets for underprivileged kids in section 333 for every home game. Now I can’t explain why he hit 383 home runs for his career. It seems to me he recorded fifty more than needed. New York pitcher, Andy Pettitte, liked to listen to the entire sound track from the movie “Rocky” before the games he pitched; and Atlanta’s “Chipper” Jones played computer solitaire right up to game time in the club house.
Islanders Compete in the Texas State Senior Games By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com
Time has not dampened the need for players to increase their chances of playing great. Yankees’ Alfonso Soriano always makes a mark in the dirt next to home plate before stepping in the batter’s box. New Texas Ranger, Prince Fielder, always breaks apart an Oreo cookie before the game. Prince claims he can tell how the game will go by how much cream is stuck to one side of the cookie. Oriole’s first baseman, Chris Davis, always brushes his teeth before every game. Cincinnati Reds’ Todd Frazier chants before a game, as others in the clubhouse wonder if he’s okay. White Sox first baseman Adam Dunn always spits a huge wad of gum onto the field of play before game time. “I don’t know why I do it, I just always have,” said Dunn. Jason Giambi claimed he had a magical beard. After he grew the facial hair, his batting average went up 80 points. I’m thinking the steroids helped. Texas Ranger’s pitcher, Derek Holland, has to play Nintendo Hockey the night before he pitches.
The 2014 Texas State Senior Games was a QUALIFYING GAMES for the 2015 National Senior Games, which will be held in Bloomington/Minneapolis/Saint Paul.
Moon Monkeys Qualify for the National Ping Pong (AKA Table Tennis) Nationals Six Island residents recently competed in Table Tennis at the Texas State Senior Games held in San Antonio March 29th & 30th. Their goal was to qualify for the 2015 National Senior Games to be held in Minneapolis. Qualifying was particularly special to Doc Cannedy and family because they have family in the Minneapolis area; all six Islanders qualified for the Nationals.
Roger Clemens
Babe Ruth Now that you’re warmed up, let’s see how closely you have been watching our National Pastime. Let’s recall some of the more popular superstitions. Did you know that “Babe” Ruth used to knock the dirt out of his spikes with his bat after every called strike? Yankee pitcher Vic Rashi refused to allow his picture to be taken before a game he was pitching. Ted Williams would place his bat under his arm and pull down hard on his cap after the second strike had been called by the umpire. Jackie Robinson always walked to home plate to hit, by passing in front of the opposing catcher. Even if the catcher was out at the mound talking with his pitcher, Jackie would wait until the catcher had retuned to his position and then pass in front of him, to step into the batter’s box. Let’s call that intimidation at its best. Phil Rizzuto would place his chewing gum on top of his hat for safe keeping, while batting. When he got two strikes on him, he would place the gum back in his mouth. Willie Mays never went to centerfield without first touching second base. Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, twirled his right thumb while holding his bat, before hitting. Pittsburgh Pirate, Ralph Kiner, never stepped on a white line on the field of play. “It didn’t help or hurt me,” said Ralph. “I just didn’t want to take any chances.”
The Bird Remember Mark “The Bird” Fidrych talking to himself and constantly cleaning the mound while pitching for the Detroit Tigers. After every 0-4 game, Chicago White Sox’s “Minnie” Minoso would shower in his entire uniform including spikes to wash away the bad karma.
But the guy who takes the cake is Roger Clemens. While with the Yankees, for good luck, Roger would rub Babe Ruth’s plaque that hangs in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium, before every game in which he pitched. You could even see him whispering underneath his breath, but I don’t think he has ever shared with us what he was saying. It is also well-known that the strikeout in baseball is referenced as a “K” on your scorecard. Roger Clemens recorded 4.672 “K’s” during his 24-year career. You would think that was enough. But Clemens took this a step farther by starting all four of his sons’ names with a K. They are in order Koby, Kory, Kacy and Kody. Kinetic trigger, I doubt it. IUPAC Meet and Greet Draws Islanders
Fundraiser Brings Local Candidates and Politicians By Brent Rourk The candidates and local politicians came out in droves to Mikel Mays last Wednesday evening for an informal IUPAC sponsored meet and greet. In a more relaxed venue candidates mingled with a crowd of islanders numbering over 100. This was another in a series of candidate meetings sponsored by the IUPAC, a non-partisan organization that provides information to islanders while encouraging them to vote and to represent the island in city elections. Candidates shook hands, requested votes, and charmingly chatted as they casually canvassed
the large room overlooking the Gulf. This was an opportunity, in a less structured format, for interested islanders to talk with a great number of candidates and others who make or wish to make the wheels of government turn. Rarely are there as many candidates and officials in one room as there were during the meet and greet. Certainly, new relationships and new support were forged during the evening. Attending the meet and greet were Mayor Martinez; City Council Members Colleen McIntyre, David Loeb, Lillian Riojas, Chad McGill, Rudy Garza, and Mark Scott; State Representative Todd Hunter; County Commissioner Candidate Brent Chesney, and Incumbent Joe McComb; County Judge Lloyd Neal; Mary Helen Berlanga, Candidate for County Judge; Kara Sands Candidate for County Clerk, Diana Barrera incumbent County Clerk; Tim McCoy Judge County Court 5; Wesley Reed Candidate for U.S. Congress; and Alex Garcia, Justice of the Peace. IUPAC, in partnership with the generosity of Mikel Mays (the new restaurant on Bob Hall Pier), used the opportunity as a fundraiser. Funds gained from the meet and greet will be earmarked towards expenses for future IUPAC informational events.

The game originated in England during the 1880s, where it was played among the upper-class as an after-dinner parlour game.
About the Senior Games The Senior Games are a group of spirited competitions in twenty-four different sports categories, ranging from table tennis to pickleball, tennis, track and volleyball, and more. Senior athletes, which includes men and women ages fifty and over (by December 31st of the Games year) compete in five-year age increments. In each sport, the top four finishers in each age group qualify for the Nationals.
Of Oreos and magic beards
Some examples are as follows. Players sat in the same spot on the bench during every game. They swung two bats in the on-deck circle before their turn at the plate. Rally caps were in order when their team was behind. Lots of players, especially pitchers, did not shave on purpose, before taking the mound. It made them feel more aggressive. Players wore the same underwear or sox when things went their way and their routine never included washing the articles of clothing if they continued to win. Many players chewed tobacco to relax: Johnny Bench, Rod Carew, Luis Tiant and “Sparky” Lyle to name a few.

Sports Talk

Major League baseball players are the absolute worst. Scientists called it a kinetic trigger, yet the players referred to their weird science as “routines.” We all know the truth; they’re superstitious. They confuse routine for superstition. In the old days you would hear the words, hex, jinxed, quirks, rituals, and idiosyncrasies. Some players even carried a rabbit’s foot in their pockets for good luck. These triggers were designed to bring the individual luck or ward off the baseball demons. You need not look any further than last year, as the playoff beards of the World Champion Boston Red Sox topped the “Curse of the Bambino.” (The players refused to shave during the playoffs.)
From left to right-Sam, Carolyn, Sherri, Doc Doc “All In” Cannedy with his two daughters Carolyn “The Hammer” Arwood, Sherri “Boom Boom” Grundhauser and his son-inlaw Sam “Big Gun” Arwood, all qualified in the following: Doc & Sam-Men’s Doubles-3rd place; Doc & Sherri Mixed Doubles-4th place; Sam & Carolyn-Mixed Doubles- 3rd Place; Carolyn & Sherri-Women’s Doubles, 2nd place; SherriWomen’s singles 3rd Place; Carolyn Women’s Singles-2nd place. One of the highlights of the tournament was when Doc Cannedy and his family played the last mixed doubles match against each other. Bob Brown & Dotson Lewis qualified for the Nationals in men’s doubles and Dotson Lewis qualified in the men’s singles in his age group. The six are looking forward to participating in the National Senior Game in 2015.
A Little Information about Ping Pong Looks like more and more Americans are finding out for themselves just why table tennis is such a great sport to play! Ping Pong (Table Tennis) is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth using a table tennis racket. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow a ball played toward them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. Points are scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent’s options, giving the hitter a great advantage. When doing so the hitter has a good chance of scoring if the spin is successful.
A major innovation was by James W. Gibb, a British enthusiast of table tennis, who discovered novelty celluloid balls on a trip to the US in 1901 and found them to be ideal for the game. This was followed by E.C. Goode who, in 1901, invented the modern version of the racket by fixing a sheet of pimpled, or stippled, rubber to the wooden blade. Table tennis was growing in popularity by 1901 to the extent that tournaments were being organized, books being written on the subject, and an unofficial world championship was held in 1902. During the early 1900s, the game was banned in Russia because the rulers at the time believed that playing the game had an adverse effect on players’ eyesight. Table tennis was introduced as an Olympic sport at the Olympics in 1988. After the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the ITTF instituted several rule changes that were aimed at making table tennis more viable as a televised spectator sport. The older 38 mm (1.50 in) balls were officially replaced by 40 mm (1.57 in) balls. This increased the ball’s air resistance and effectively slowed down the game. By that time, players had begun increasing the thickness of the fast sponge layer on their rackets, which made the game excessively fast and difficult to watch on television. A few months later, the ITTF changed from a 21-point to an 11-point scoring system (and the serve rotation was reduced from five points to two), effective in September 2001. This was intended to make games more fast-paced and exciting. You are invited to join these and other “Ping Pongers” Tuesday and Friday afternoons (125 pm) at Ethel Eyerly Senior Center in Flour Bluff. Dotson’s Notes: All of Doc Cannedy’s family players used custom paddles made by son-inlaw Sam Arwood. A funny thing happened to me during a doubles match. I lost my balance trying for a shot and hit the floor with a bang! After stopping the blood flowing from a 3 inch cut on my right elbow, putting my dislocated thumb back in place and insuring that my stainless steel hip was working, I continued the match, which Bob and I eventually lost and we played one more match. Driving home from San Antonio was rather uncomfortable. My purple hip is slowly going back to its normal color, the bruises on my arm and shoulder have just about disappeared, but I still am having twinges…recovery has been slow and somewhat painful. At my age, I believe I should get off the DL (disabled list) as soon as I did a only a few years ago when I was in my twenties. By Maybeth Christensen With all the new home construction on the Island, the Architectural Control Committee has been working with the builders to do a better job of keeping their job sites clean, that they have a dumpster on site (or they haul off the debris every day) and a silt fence is installed on the sides of the property to help stop the sand from blowing off the job site. They have initiated a fine system for those who do not follow the rules. They have also developed a system whereby they will recognize the builders who are doing a good job. Watch for an ACC five star award sign coming soon to a construction site.
Guardians Rescue is a foster-based rescue on The Island. We are in need of volunteers to help on the weekends at our adoption events that are usually held on Sat/Sun at Ace Hardware.
A Corpus Christi Police Officer impounded a gray 2012 Toyota Tundra pickup truck from the beach after the truck was discovered in about 4 feet of the surf Sunday night. A wrecker service pulled the vehicle to shore and then to the city impound lot. The Officer was unsuccessful to contact the registered owner at the registered address; but continues to search for the owner.
Some areas that help is needed: set-up/break-down kennels, talking to potential adopters, walking dogs, cleaning cages, etc. Perfect for students for community service, retirees or anyone who wants to make a difference and help save lives. As a foster-based rescue, we rely on foster homes to socialize and get them to events. We can only save an animal if we have a foster home in place and available funds for vetting.

Maintenance The covenants require your property to be well maintained. You might take a look at your house as if you were going to buy it. Does it need to be painted? Is the garage door rusty? Do you have old wood or miscellaneous “junk” stored outside. You can always bring that material to the Litter Critter in the POA parking lot the last weekend of every month.
The Port Aransas Art Center is a unique partnership of artists, organizers, supporters, and teachers who are committed to enriching the art experiences of the public, including our public school students. Artists are invited to participate and donate half or more of their auction price to the cause.

SMA Theatre to Present ‘Fright Night’ Experienced Students Perform 2 Professional Plays By Brent Rourk We have become used to seeing the Seashore Middle Academy Theatre Department in the news. They have a history of performing superbly in competition and in the plays they perform at PACT over the years. On May 16, 17, and 18 the SMA theatre class will perform two humorous one act plays; Dracula: The Death of Nosferatu and 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse. Based on the classic gothic thriller Dracula (by Bram Stoker) The Death of Nosferatu, adapted by Christopher P Nichols and directed by SMA theatre teacher Ms. Ashley Knotts, follows the legendary character Professor Van Helsing as he battles the evil Dracula. The play moves swiftly from the moment Van Helsing appears during the opening and is filled with non-stop excitement and action.

A recent study found a burgeoning demand for skilled workers across the region, including welders, pipefitters, CNC operators, quality control (QC) technicians and more. Researchers studied the 15 Texas counties below the Nueces River, an area historically known as the Nueces Strip. The 18-month study centered on the competitive opportunities for jobs, attraction and expansion of the manufacturing sector, and methods for expanding the supplier base across the region. It was conducted by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) in cooperation with the U.S. Economic Development Administration. “Major changes are underway in South Texas beyond just the tremendous impact of the Eagle Ford oil and gas activity, including job demands and manufacturing opportunities,” says TEEX economic development expert John Adams, who led the study.

that has the biggest ears. She is 2 years old and weighs 7 lbs. This little girl was adopted from animal control and was then found as a stray on the streets. The owners did not go and claim her back so she was up for adoption again. PAAC pulled her because she was terrified at the shelter. This little girl is very scared and would not be a good pet for a home with children. She is fine with other animals, and is crate trained. She will require someone with patience that can take the time to help her trust humans again. She deserves a forever home. Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
I got Lucky last week… I got Lucky last week… literally. My friend Amy Myers knew my li ttle Doxie, Peanut, had recently died and also knew how much I missed my dog. She was 17 and I had her for 15 years. So when her Facebook friend, Connie Beane, put out an appeal to the public to save a young Dachshund pup at the San Antonio Humane Society from being euthanized, Amy put the wheels in motion and notified me. “Ronnie,
super sweet music. Chances are you know these talented folk: Lela Caldwell and Bron Doyle. Lela has been making great music on this island for many years. She plays that guitar just like ringing a bell and in many diverse styles. I’ve heard her shred a six string in blues, rock, techno, classical and classics. But she pulled a new one on me the other night when she broke into some Latin jazz. Enter Bron. Bron is the Bron from Bron’s Beach Carts on Avenue G. His carts are everywhere. You can’t miss them. What you might not know is, Bron has become quite the accomplished percussionist. He took a bunch of lessons from our resident conga player, Luis Villareal (of Triggerfish fame) and picked it up really fast. If you ever go to his house, you’ll notice that it’s become a hand drum museum of sorts with a djembe, marimbas, steel drum, congas, bongos, frontier, all kind of shakers… he’s really taking this thing seriously. And I think he and Lela have found something special here. They’ve been playing Giggity’s and La Playa. It’s nice… really nice. Word on the street is…. two thumbs up!
Scattered shots…
The patron saints of doomed dogs- Dylan Stewart, Cilia McKinley, Connie Beane and Bruce Stewart with Ronnie and Lucky. this dog is perfect for you” she said. It had only been a week since Peanut died and the wound was still fresh… maybe too fresh to even think about another dog so soon. But, I said I’d check it out and that’s when I found out about the network of saints out there who are dedicated to saving every dog on death row they can by fostering and finding them permanent homes. Port A resident, Connie Beane is one of these people. I soon came to learn that this lady does this solely for the gratitude of knowing that she helped save the life of one of God’s creatures. There’s no hidden agenda here. So, after seeing a couple of pictures of “George” on Facebook, I agreed to give the little fella a try. Connie assured me that I could return him to the shelter if it didn’t work out. She had some friends in San Antonio (Celia McKinley, Dylan Stewart and Bruce Stewart) of the same ilk that would drive George to Port A. This was on Saturday… George was to be put to sleep on Monday. No pressure. So on Saturday I went to the Port A Animal Shelter and adopted George. It was a really special moment in my life. These people who made this happen for me are amazing. They took care of all the expenses of neutering and vaccinating and wouldn’t even take gas money from me. So I took George home and we both fell in love with each other. But I decided George didn’t fit him and he seemed like a pretty lucky mutt to me. So Lucky it is… like I said, I got Lucky last week.
Austin Heat tore it up all weekend in Port A Last weekend was definitely a goodern for live music. For starters, the amazing rocking soul team, Austin Heat, was in town for a two nighter at the Back Porch and Giggity’s.. They ripped the head off of both shows. It was great to see my old pals… I’ve known the pianist, Don Burrows, since the old days in Lubbock when he used to play with Joe Ely. And over at Shorty’s, the beautifully harmonic Hold Fast Fables (Galveston, TX) played their first show of the season. Those guys have a mesmerizing sound that no one else has. I adore the cello parts in their arrangements. They’ll be back on June 27th. And mean while over at the Back
Lela Caldwell and Bron Doyle played an evening of Latin tinged jazz last Wednesday
Hold Fast Fables played Shorty’s last Friday Porch, Thomas Michael Riley, gave another stellar performance to a SRO crowd. Riley has that super smooth baritone and a shoebox full of original, heartfelt songs. He is certainly a patriot and appreciates our military. Also over at Shorty’s last Saturday, Uel Jackson played his regular “First Saturday” gig, which always brings in the old Tarpon Ice House crowd. Uel has also been playing some shows at the Gaff and the Back Porch lately, too.
