Last week we had a couple of twisters roar across our Island and Islander Libby Edwards caught one of them on camera.

As you can see from these pictures a dark cloud line crossed The Island about 3 a.m. on Tuesday a week ago and the twister picked up water as it crossed the Laguna Madre.

Plans for Gulfside Development Along Whitecap Complete

Gulf Shores Joint Venture has released its plans for BeachWalk Village Development fronting the Gulf of Mexico adjacent to Whitecap Boulevard. The plans include single-family beachfront homes, multi-family lodging, and an Island village which wraps around the existing Island House and fronts on the seawall.

The 40-acre site will be Coastal Vernacular architectural style reminiscent of the low country architecture found along the coasts of Georgia, and the Carolinas.

The BeachWalk Village Development is constant with the Island Master Plan and the developments on the west side of SPID. It is intended to compliment the Schlitterbahn Beach County Development making product available for those looking for beachfront settings.

It crossed over the golf course and headed off toward Mustang State Park then found its way out to sea without damaging anything but Island nerves.

It’s been several years since our last tornado which managed to take some of the siding off the Holiday Inn but fortunately didn’t cause any injuries.

Now if our luck just holds for the Big Tornado season which begins June 1. Forecasts for the hurricane season should be out in the next couple of weeks.

Real estate We’re featuring a lot of real estate news in this issue for a very simple reason; real estate is what is happening on our sandbar right now.

After years of waiting and anticipation things are moving. The real estate market on both ends of The Island is heating up and this week marks the first new residential development as a result of the Schlitterbahn Beach Resort. See the complete story in this issue, and look for more of the same in the near future.

Assessing the assessment Tax notices are now all in for Island property owners and while we are hearing few complaints from Port Aransas and Flour Bluff, Padre property owners are forming a caravan to head to the appeals office.

We’re hearing from a great many Islanders whose home valuation has increased about $100,000; that seems to be the magic and somewhat arbitrary number. Estimates are that across Nueces County valuations, minus new construction, will be up about 5% with many areas of town holding steady while the Ocean Drive area and The Island is expected to jump about 10% - considerably less than $100,000 per home. When it’s all said and done, after the protest season, County Judge Lloyd Neal told the Kiwanis Club this week that he expects countywide property value, once again minus new construction, will be up about 3%.

The big complaint this year is that the Nueces County Appraisal District is not releasing the appraisal values to the public during the appeals process. This means that homeowners who protest their valuation must do so without knowing the value of the homes and lots around them. The reason, according to Neal, is that the release of the valuations early in the process led to lawsuits and real estate agents stopped providing them.

If ever there were a year for homeowners to protest their valuations, it looks like this is that year.

Casino Night to Benefit Fourth of July Fireworks

By Denise Hebert Hello everyone, the Island Blast, our first Fireworks display, is in need for some funding.

The people who started IslandBlast! this (Jerry and Sharon Fire in the sky on Watkins) are people like the Fourth of July us that just want to add something new to our island. They want to be able to sit on their deck and watch a good ole Fireworks display on the 4th of July.

The display they are hoping for costs $ 15,000.00 and it will be equal to Port Aransas fireworks which is a very nice display.

I have volunteered to do a Casino Night to help with their funding. Because of this I could use some volunteers. I will need help selling tickets, putting up posters and help that night to exchange money for Funny Money.

If any of you would like to help, you know I will appreciate it, and I could use your help!

So far, Rusty has been advising me on how to run a casino night has been very helpful, and Patrick Kelliher has designed the posters and the tickets.

Casino night will be June 1, at the Country Club, from 6 PM until 10 PM. I will be hiring professional gaming people to run the games.

We know so far, we will have 8 tables for black jack, two large craps tables and a roulette wheel.

Does anyone know how to run bingo?

We could do that ourselves, which will save money. Kim Erwin has graciously offered her two condo’s for two days for prizes. One in South Padre and the other in New Orleans.

The first new residential development in the area around the Schlitterbahn Beach Resort sold all of its 44 units in just two weeks.

The $9 million project now is off the drawing board and heading for groundbreaking in early July.

It is called Nemo Cay Resort, located on Nemo Court, and is being done by developers Alex Harris and Willard Hammonds, II. The 44 Unit Town Home Project will include five types of units; 2 bedroom/3 bath, 3 bedroom/2 bath, 3 bedroom/3 bath, 4 bedroom/4 bath and 5 bedroom/4 bath. Originally constructed in 1938 by the Carter Family, this chapel has a storied history, beautifully painted frescoes, and a peace that transcends its location.

Built at a time when there was no ferry service to Mustang Island nor causeway connecting Corpus Christi to North Padre Island or Mustang Island, this astounding chapel beckons a visit from you, just as it was intended to attract locals when its chief designer and builder Aline Badger Carter envisioned a small chapel on the island in the 1930s.

By Kim Bridges We just got back from an 11-day vacation in Costa Rica. And boy, do we have stories to tell for Island readers who have expressed an interest in retiring in Costa Rica for the lower cost of living and the “Pura Vida” way of life.

For those of you who know our history, the day Kent and I met almost 4 years ago through mutual friends on a canal boat ride, Kent asked me if I would consider going to Costa Rica for a recon mission/vacation. Well, it took awhile to put that trip together.

We were informed that the usual tip is a U.S. dollar per bag, like it is here. In perspective, that is about 500 colones (Costa Rican dolares), which have been devalued to the point that all Costa Ricans and tourists pay American prices now because tourism is the biggest industry.

In Padre Island terms, you would pay 34,000 colones for a 1.75 liter of Smirnoff vodka, or $68 American dollars. Ouch!

We flew from CC to Houston to Liberia, which is about 30 miles east of the Pacific Coast.

Great roads if you know how to drive crazy -Corpus driving certainly gives you experience with that. All paved, but steep dropoffs with no place to pull off the road. Roads accommodate maybe one and a half vehicles, but all cars down there are skinny.

Almost attacked at the baggage claim area by dozens of car rental company employees, who were offering the best deals, and wanting to cart off our bags to their rental cars, which were parked miles offsite. Don’t let anyone take your

Playa del Coco: very touristy, beautiful beaches but groceries and restaurants were at least twice to twenty times what we pay in the U.S. Lots of outdoor shops and “restaurants”, but the way to go is to rent a condo with a kitchen and buy from the SuperMercado or the SuperCompra grocery stores. Rice, beans, chicken and pork are affordable but still higher than the U.S. Everything else was either not available or way more expensive than the U.S.

I attended elementary, junior high and high school, so I managed to string together questions in Spanish, which backfired on me -- it fooled them into thinking that I spoke Spanish so they answered so rapidly I couldn’t understand their responses! Bottom line, if you’re not fluent in Spanish, speak English.

Since I work at Spec’s as a Wine Consultant, I had to check out the wine available at the grocery stores. They don’t have wine stores or liquor stores, at least I didn’t see any. Limited selection, mostly Argentinean and Chilean and other mass-produced Californian with a smattering of French table wine, and since the grocery stores are not air conditioned, the wines are “cooked”, or subjected to high temperatures and aren’t drinkable or don’t resemble what they should taste like anymore.

Fast forward to the best part of our trip: leaving Playa del Coco and finding another better, non-touristy beach. We drove South down the Pacific Coast trying to find Tamarindo, and accidentally dead-ended at Playa Grande.

What a find! Turtle crossing sign, because leatherback turtles lay their eggs on this beach four months per year. Turtle Crossing sign on the road, so you slow down in case one of them makes it up to the road. Cut your lights sign, because turtles are attracted to lights, and they lay their eggs at night. Hotel Las Tortugas. The pictures of us holding the Island Moon were at an abandoned rangers/tourist station where they have a giant statue of the leatherback turtle.

The rangers station was abandoned apparently because the government is more bankrupt than the U.S. government is...

Liberia was 95 degrees with high humidity, no breeze when we landed. The equivalent of (Costa Rican) TSA employees were filing their nails while pointedly not looking at the X-Ray machines while our bags came into the country.

They want tourism badly, as their only other industry is coffee.

The Hotel Las Tortugas was a surfers’ haven -- one of the best beaches for surfing on the Pacific Coast. The only other guests were repeat surfers that have been going there for 30 years or more. An American established the “hotel” in 1974, with the cooperation of the Costa Rican equivalent of the Parks and Wildlife Service, because of the proximity to the beach where Leatherback Turtles come to lay eggs every night, and with total respect to the natural habitat when it came to building the hotel.

We highly recommend this “hotel” if you like a rustic habitat. There are about 20 hammocks, some underneath a palapa that hosts bats during the day (they fly out at sunset -- what a sight!). There is a restaurant over two levels of natural hard woods. Ground level has a turtleshaped pool and a hot tub. All of the rooms have a window unit air conditioner, which you definitely need! Pool shaped like a turtle Howler Monkeys threw guavas from the treetops when you are trying to unload or load your car in the parking area. One almost hit Kent on the head -- missed him by 6 inches! We think that the monkeys weren’t really happy about their habitat being invaded by Americans. Or maybe they are bored hanging out in trees all the time eating guavas.

Incredible beach sunsets Beautiful shells. If you ask a Tico what a shell is called, he will say “it’s a concha”...then if you ask what another different shell is called, he will say “it’s a concha”, and just to test what I thought was

really a localism, I asked what another different type of shell was, and I was told “it’s a concha!”.

Got it. There’s no difference to the locals.

Pura Vida My final story is about the perception of security. Because most Costa Ricans (“Ticos”) live in basic conditions, sometimes with no doors or floors or windows or air conditioning, and have few possessions that need to be protected, there is no locked security, unless you are a Tico working in the tourist industry, where us crazy tourists think we need a door, and a lock on that door, maybe two of them, with maybe a key to unlock each of them.

The first place that we stayed couldn’t be locked if we left to go sight-seeing. Though one key was given to the four of us, it didn’t work from the outside 90 percent of the time.

The second place that we stayed was lockable from the outside, thankfully.

The third place that we stayed couldn’t be locked by the outside if you wanted to go to the beach and leave your hotel room. Because the previous night’s guests were robbed while they were sleeping, I decided to press the issue. In my limited Spanish, I told the hotel desk clerk that the deadbolts on the two doors weren’t able to be unlocked from the outside. He will get someone to work on it. About an hour later, we went back to the room, and one of the two doors’ deadbolt was completely removed, leaving a gaping hole in the door. Of course, the bottom doorknob lock was locked. I stuffed a towel in the hole to keep mosquitoes from getting into our room, and Kent said “I feel safer already” (haha). I went back up to the hotel front desk and was told again he will get someone to work on it.

Another swim in the pool and walk on the beach, then back to the room. Someone was working on the lock -- installing a new doorknob where the deadbolt was before, directly above the functioning doorknob. A few minutes go by, and he stands back, surveys his work, tries to use the key to unlock the top doorknob. He scratches his head, perplexed. He tries to unlock it from the outside and realizes that he can only unlock it from the inside -- installed backward.

Top doorknob unlocks from the inside and bottom doorknob unlocks from the outside. Not a working deal. He gets it: removes the lock and reinstalls it where both doorknobs are able to be unlocked from the outside. We try it out, and sure enough, both doorknobs on the same door have to be unlocked in a bizarre sequence and turned in just the right sequence, and it takes at least two hands to turn them in opposite directions to open the door. Security at last!

Later at the hotel bar, we saw the owner who asked if we got the lock fixed. Kent said yes, but you have a small problem -- you can’t rent the room to a one-armed man. The owner laughed and said that he had a bag of keys that may have fit the locks, which would have been the easy fix. He shakes his head and says “Pura Vida” In Costa Rica, instead of saying Buenas Dias, Buenas Noches, Buenas Tardes, Hasta Luego, or Hasta La Vista, you say “Pura Vida”. The Ticos always smile and return the greeting.

It’s a great place. We plan to check out the less touristy regions of the country on future trips.

Traveling Moon Goes Seismic

Costa Rica is popular destination for Islanders these days. Mary and John Spolans and Joanne and Blackie Pitzer took the Island Moon along to the Arenal Volcano that jumps up to 5,437 feet above the surrounding hills there. Arenal is currently “sleeping” but has been the country’s most active volcano for the past 43 years. It was formed 7,000 years ago and its most eruptive period began in 1968 with an explosion that buried three small villages and left 87 people dead. Since 2010 the volcano’s seismicity, explosions and lava flows have decreased significantly. It is, scientists assure us, still alive; it’s just sleeping.

Blackie said he tried to wake it up but to no avail.

Stuff I Heard on the Island

By Maybeth Christensen Dredging of the canals on the north side of the Island will finish this week. They will be working in the spoil site area as it needs grading and lowering. I haven’t received the final number of cubic yards, but it will be over 30,000.

As our Island continues to build out, I am sure many folks are going to lose the “view” they had simply because there will be a home built on a vacant lot, or someone will decide to fence their property. Our Island is filling up. Some folks reminisce about being able to hunt any place they wanted “back in the day.”

Well, that is not possible any longer.

I’m old enough to remember where it all started and how it would have died if not for the tenacity and faith of a single person.

Coffman is the one on the far right at the right time. He, along with his wife and son June Bug, flourished. Texas was finally ready for Texas Music and Coffman had the goods. He revived Schroeder Hall and he got down to business.

Canal fences – what are the rules?

There has been some concern and confusion about a recent fence which was installed at Whitecap and Isabella. There are some properties where the property owner owns 50’ into the water, i.e. beyond the bulkhead. They pay taxes on that land as well as association fees.

As is the case for all fences, this owner brought the plans for the fence along with a permit application to the office. The plans were reviewed by the architectural control committee and a permit for construction was approved.

Some folks have said they were sold a “waterview” lot. Unfortunately, there is nothing

Lighting continues to be an issue. Folks install bright lights on the canal side of their homes and that light shines across the canal into their neighbor’s house or on to the property next door. Or, they leave their lights on all night. Please check to see the direction of your lights. They should only light up your yard.

Shields are an option as well as lower wattage bulbs. We also suggest using motion sensors on the lights so they do not shine from dusk to dawn.

Dog park Some folks who attended the dog park forum asked why not do something for the children?

Billish park is the designated community park and plans are underway to make improvements.

BINGO Night Has 23 Winners

By Brent Rourk BINGO resumed at the Holiday Inn for three consecutive Thursday evenings. Last Thursday 23 different players won either cash prizes or door prizes. These BINGO games are operated by the Kiwanis Club of Padre Island and sponsored by several local businesses. The final Kiwanis BINGOs this year will be this Thursday, May 9th and Thursday, May 16th.

The games begin at 7:00 P.M. Enjoy an evening out of the house and have some fun with other BINGO players.

Soon enough the sound had its own radio station, KOKE FM in Austin which created a brand around the line “Goat Ropers Need Love Too.” There is a direct and unbroken line between KOKE FM and the Texas Music stations all over Texas – including the one here in town. But along the way that line was tenuous and remained unbroken only through the tenacity of one true believer who kept the flame flickering often at the expense of his own well being.

It can all be traced to a dilapidated Quonset hut in south Austin that was turned into the Armadillo World Headquarters where I once saw a double bill with Johnny Rodriguez and Frank Zappa. That hot mix of sounds created just enough cross mixing of audiences to generate the critical mass needed to launch a new genre of music that is now known collectively as Texas Music.

What began as a laissez faire approach to music at KOKE soon blossomed into a full blown record-selling genre as first the Viva Terlingua album and on its heels the Outlaws album proved that the music could drive records sales in the millions of units and the Cosmic Cowboy Boom was on.

In North Texas a new convert was a radio man named Steve Coffman who did several Texas Music shows in Dallas during the days of block radio block programming, training under the King of Texas Radio the Mad Scotsman, but he longed for a station of his own as down in Austin KOKE FM fell victim to Hippy Accounting and the vicissitudes of the small radio market that was Austin. But Steve had caught the bug.

To make a living Coffman migrated to San Antonio in the late 1970s where early Texas Music station KEXL was in its death throws.

He put the classic rock station KZEP on the air and the KEXL DJs migrated there with him but he grew frustrated and flamed out in a Johnny Fever episode by locking himself in the studio playing Jerry Jeff Walker until someone found the key and removed him by force.

Coffman took his box of Texas records over to KFAN FM where he flourished until the station was sold out from under him and moved to Kerrville where it remains today still playing his format. He ended up at KENS AM which was the stepchild of the television product with a signal that barely covered the city. The radio manager was so out of touch that Coffman could only play a limited playlist until 5:45 p.m. when the manager drove home and out of the range of the AM signal and Coffman would let the clutch out on the good stuff. This system failed when one day the manager stopped at a Happy Hour and was late getting home. When he heard what Coffman was doing it was off with his head.

Undeterred Coffman made a deal to crank out a station from the building across the street from Gruene Hall in downtown Gruene and then on to the tiny hamlet of Smithville where he cast pearls before the swine and was run out of town.

Texas Music finds a home in Victoria He ended up in Victoria where he bought a station with the help of Stock Car Driver Wally Dallenbach, affectionately known to his friends as Wally Way In Back; 98.7 The Texas Mix had arrived. The year was 1999 and Texas Music had been killed by the Disco Scare but Hip Hop and the Nashvegas sound that country radio had become alienated enough Texans that there was a sufficient audience to breath life back into it.

Coffman was the right person in the right place

At the time his was the only Texas Music station in the state; the music format is now called Americana but the term hadn’t been invented yet. It was a different way of looking at radio. When asked to explain the format Coffman would say: “You know when you keep pushing buttons on your car radio until you find a song you like…well, we play those songs. We don’t have listeners, we have converts.”

Texas Music comes to Corpus In 2000 I helped put together a group that turned 94.7 FM into a Texas Music format and Coffman took over programming.

Things went fine until about a year later when I got a call from Maclovio Perez who was the weatherman at KIII and part of the project, “Coffman and the station owner are duking it out in the parking lot,” he said.

“Well,” I said, “I’m in Tulsa so I think it’ll be settled by the time I get there.”

Coffman abandoned the Corpus Christi project but within five years The Range had sprung up in Dallas, KGSR in Austin, and KNBT in New Braunfels/San Antonio and the Texas Music format was here to stay; they are all on the air and doing just fine.

That was almost ten years ago and now Texas Music has gone in many directions with each of the major Texas Markets – with the exception of Houston for some reason – developing their own version of the genre: Austin is Alt Rock with a Texas twist, Dallas has more of a traditional Country flavor, and KNBT 92.1 is the standard bearer. The business of Texas Music has settled in the San Marcos/New Braunfels area with more than two dozen live venues specializing in the Texas Sound – with Gruene Hall as the Ryman Auditorium centerpiece and a relatively new showcase venue in downtown San Marcos a close second, with several venues in Houston and Love and War in Plano.

Many of the Texas Music bands live in the New Braunfels area and Lone Star Music Magazine publishes there. The music known as Texas Music has become a wide umbrella which covers everything from the Dang Near Country sound that 94.7 pumps out here in town, to jazz fusion, R & B, swing, and Southern Rock; in other words all of the various types of music made by Texans. Several of the Texas Music bands have also broken through the gates of Nashvegas.

Music Press playing catch up The music press has lagged behind the music with very few writers around the state devoting full-time to writing about it, with Island Moon writer Ronnie Narmour being the only one writing on a weekly basis. Now Port Aransas is becoming a regular stop on the circuit as musicians make regular tours of the Couch Surfing Circuit and soak up some of the local vibe.

London Broadcasting, which is based in Dallas and owns local station KIII, has several Texas Music based shows which are syndicated statewide. For the first time since the 1960’s Texas musicians can make a living without ever leaving the state – become a musician and you too can make hundreds of dollars per year! – thanks in large part to one person who never gave up.

Coffman passed away in 2006 but if he were around today he would be very proud of what his music has become. He deserves a place in the Texas Music Hall of Fame as the guy who carried the format around in his pocket until the time was right to let it loose on the state.

North Padre and Port Aransas is going to be flooded with excited families coming out to start off their summer season. Out on the water we have already been receiving waves of visitors with the masses of bait and game fish coming into the back waters of the bay from the Port A Jetties to the Land Cut. That’s a hundred miles of water to keep an eye on, but what a sight. Whether you are an angler walking a pier, behind your home, fishing the beach, out on a boat or just jumping out and casting a rod anywhere you can, the opportunities for a successful trip is sure a thing as it’ll be getting HOT out on the Island in the next few weeks!

The beach has been beautiful with some of the dragging cold fronts pushing the waves down and incoming tides bringing us some green water in close. This flush of tide has carried life to the inlets, and flushed the back bays with a lot of good fishing. Standing on the edge of the

An angler is only as good as his bait, and that’s the truth. For those of us that enjoy being the sole factor in that equation lure fishing is tops. As we have been bragging on how good the live bait fishing has been it has been equally impressive fishing with top waters and soft plastics. The key to success with lures at this time is timing the bite, and changing your presentation to match the attitude of the game fish you are hunting.

The Upper Lagoon is beautiful, with much of it too clear. I’ve been using bright silvers and metal flake colors here and darker colors to the south in the stained waters of Baffin. The

finest fishing I’ve done lately has been staring at twitching top water baits. The first and last hours of the day have constantly been good for explosive success on top waters of both big and small sizes. Work them slow and remember that you are in search of quality not numbers.

Fish will hear your plug from far distances, let them make a calculated attack on a slow moving bait. Throw plugs that you can see from a long distance, you will become the bait if you can see it. Soft plastics will keep the action moving and are working best out in 5ft of water. Vary your retrieves from slow skips on the bottom to some fast darting action. When the skip jacks invade use the slower presentation on the bottom with a slightly heavier jig head. Glow/Chartreuse Norton Bull Minnows and the silver black backed LOGIC LURES have been my best producers along the King Ranch Shoreline. The big flats along the east side of the Intacoastal are full of redfish but they are boat shy so make long casts with big gold spoons or wade the flats.

The South Texas Sportsman Show will be on Mothers Day here in Corpus Christi but it is the show we filmed in the afternoon before we went to Baffin. The winds were in the high thirties and we caught a mixed bag of skipjack and keeper trout. The next day’s adventure will air later in the month on Fox at 9am. Sunday is Mother’s Day and I couldn’t be more grateful to all the mothers in my life. My mom put up with a lot from me and still is a SUPER GRANDMA to all our family. This weekend take some time to thank and appreciate the importance of our Mothers. Just as our Mother Lagoon gives us the life on the water we enjoy here in the Coastal Bend our Mothers are responsible for the people we are today. Let’s give love and thanks to both.

SEA has so far collected more than half of the washed concrete needed for the 17-acre reef site which would be nine miles from the mouth of Packery Channel and eight miles from the mouth of the Port Aransas Jetties.

SEA hopes to have the necessary material ready and the reef in place for fishing and diving by the end of this summer.

Meanwhile, the SEA Annual Fundraising Banquet is planned for American Bank Center on Thursday, May 23. It begins at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale now $125 for individuals which includes SEA membership, $1000 for a table of eight, and $1750 for a sponsorship table.

I’m really sorry it took me so long to write you.

My humans started a new business and I had to take care of the PR; you know “schmoozing” the tourists. It was really nice meeting you and your humans at the Art & Craft walk on Sunday a few weeks ago. Oh, and about that little growl you gave me. Don’t worry about it.

Diets can tend to make you a little grumpy. My humans don’t let me have “snacks” either. But I do play the tourist angle every chance I get.

It’s getting tougher and thougher. My female human doesn’t let me out of her sight and I have a really difficult time sneaking a “knosh”, if you know what I mean.

I do get my treats though, even if they are all natural. I like it at the end of the tourist season when my friend Bella’s human has a doggie pool party at her place.

and he was shaped like a hotdog. He was a tailpiper but he was so short his nose was too close to the ground to reach my tailpipe. He was funny. His name was Buster.

I have stopped eating junk food because I can’t get any. Do you have any? Can I have some?

Send it to me in a box that says THIS IS NOT JUNK FOOD on the outside and no one will know. I don’t know why they call it junk food anyway. Have you ever tasted dog food? Now that is junk food.

I don’t chase my sisters because they are old and cranky and have claws and they can climb up stuff and get away and I’ve learned that even if I catch them I don’t know what to do with them. Same with cars.

That’s when my humans bring lots of treats.

I guess to impress the other humans. Now the good part is my male human loves pizza and when he can sneak me a crust, he does. But if he gets caught, then he’s in big trouble. But, oh well, that’s not my problem. Although I have to admit sometimes I do feel sorry for him because he really means well. Well, I gotta go now, if you know what I mean, (really gotta go). Take care, stick to your diet as much as possible and I’ll see you at the next art walk get together. Oh, by the way, I was that 4 yr old Golden Retriever that you met that day.

I have found that when working the tourist crowd a bandana around your neck helps. Not sure why.

My diet is going okay I guess. I got some treats at the dog and cat party at Dr. Christi’s last Friday and my human snuck me some. That was a fun party.

I have to stay on my diet until my humans take me off. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be a dog.

I see plenty of big fat humans eating hotdogs whenever they want. It’s not fair. If I had thumbs I’d get my own hotdogs.

I like the food they give me but I want more – and some hotdogs and a treat and some cat food.

I don’t know the cats’ names. Stoopid cats.

I don’t know how many stories I have made, I can’t count. I’m a dog. I don’t think that sleeping is being lazy, I think it is recharging my dog batteries so I can be ready when my humans want to go to the beach. I never know how long I’m going to be there so I have to be ready. It’s part of my dog job.

When Mr. Edison was trying to invent the light bulb it kept going out and he couldn’t figure out what to do until his dog told him to put it inside a vacuum and that’s how we got the light bulb. But the other dogs didn’t like that and they barked at him for talking because then the humans all knew that dogs could talk if they want to. Writing is the same way and some dogs may get mad at me for writing because now their humans will know. But Mr. Edison was not a nice man when it came to dogs and elephants. We like his bulbs alright but we don’t like him because he was mean to us.

My sister’s cat flew because she was snatched up by a Great Horned Owl that grabbed her. She got away though but that owl gave her some kind of a fungus and she lost a bunch of hair but now it’s growing back and she doesn’t go outside at night anymore.

I like hotdogs. I don’t know why. I figure they call them hotDOGS for a reason though. I had a long haired weenie dog friend named Buster

Tax Pledge Thank you, Dale – Island Moon, Why? Because your State Representative -- Todd Hunter -- proved to be a PLEDGE KEEPER today on the floor of the Texas House yesterday (Monday).

Despite intense pressure to vote for a tax hike, Rep. Todd Hunter kept the pledge made to constituents: “I, _________________, pledge to the taxpayers of the _______ District of the state of _____________ and all the people of this state that I will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.”

I wish I was sending this note to every single signer of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge... but we’re not. Some folks broke their promise; they and their constituents will have to deal with that.

While we often knock on folks who break their word, it is equally important to recognize those elected officials who keep faith with their voters.

I hope you will take a moment and call the office of Todd Hunter to say, “Thank you for keeping the Taxpayer Pledge!”

Donavon Frankenreiter to Perform Concert Benefiting Waves of Impact

Did I tell you Jim Nooks, Mrs Waits cat, was dead? Died of apoplexy. I foretold his end.

Coffee & cream for breakfast. Pound cake for lunch. Turtle & oysters for dinner. Buttered toast for tea, & Mexican rats, taken raw, for supper!

Cat nature could not stand so much luxury.

He grew enormously & ended in a spasm. His beauty could not save him.

I saw in San Antonio a cat dressed up for company. He had two holes bored in each ear, & in each were two bows of pink & blue ribbon.

His round face set in pink & blue looked like a big owl in a full blooming ivy bush. He was snow white, & wore the golden fetters of his inamorata around his neck in the form of a collar. His tail & feet were tipped with black.

And his eyes of green & stealthy face were truly cat like!

But I saw “cats as in cats” in Lavaca. While the stage was changing mules, I stepped around to see Mr. & Mrs. Monod, a French couple, with whom I had passed a night, when I landed in Texas in 1846, to join Genl Wool’s army.

Mr. Monod received me with all the shrugs & grimaces of his nation, & the entrance of Madame was foreshadowed by her stately cats, with visage grave & tails erect, who preceded, surrounded, & followed in her wake.

Her present favorite, Sodoisk, a large mottled grey, was a magnificent creature, & in her train she pointed out Aglai, her favorite eleven years ago, when I first visited her! They are of French breed & education & when the claret & water was poured out for my refreshment, they jumped on the table for a sip too.

If I can persuade the mail stage to give a place to one of that distinguished family, I will take one to Camp Cooper, provided Madame can trust her pet into such a barbarous country, & Indian society.

I left that wild cat on the Rio Grande. He was too savage. Had grown as large as a small sized dog. Had to be caged, & would strike at everything that came within his reach. International artist Donavon Frankenreiter will perform a benefit concert at House of Rock Friday, May 17!

Donavon Frankenreiter is a Hawaii based singer/songwriter/guitarist who was originally a pro surfer turned famous musician. His sound has been compared to that of his long-time friend, Jack Johnson, who also co-produced his first solo, self-titled album in 2004. Since then, Frankenreiter has had 11 full length albums and continues to travel across the globe performing.

The evening will feature an acoustic performance with Donavon Frankenreiter and Matt Grundy and include live raffle giveaways with Billabong gear and signed Donavon collectibles and a chance to leave with some great surf photography! All proceeds benefit Waves of Impact.

Waves of Impact was formed to introduce individuals facing exceptional challenges in their lives to the thrill of being in the ocean and riding waves. Families who have children with special challenges often find themselves isolated from the communities that they live in because organized sports are not equipped to integrate their children. The relaxed setting of the free surf camps allows them to meet families who are in similar circumstances.

Veterans wounded in the recent wars often have catastrophic injuries. Getting them in the ocean and on a surfboard helps show them that the only limitations they have are the ones they set for themselves.

Waves of Impact will be hosting a surf camp for Autistic children on May 12th in Corpus Christi, and on May 16th in Galveston.

By Jay Gardner Its been a crazy ride around the Island lately with these weather patterns we’ve been having. Acutally raining a little, which seems foreign for some reason. I haven’t owned a rain coat for what seems like 4 years now, and actually looked at some at Academy the other day. Around the time I had my size picked up and was about to pull one off the shelf, I found myself giggling manically. I felt like I was buying a snow shovel on the way to the Mojave Desert. I put the rain gear back on the shelf and dared the rain gods to make me regret the decision to not buy a rain jacket. Bring it on!

The laguna has been doing fairly well too. Speaking of sargassum, the Superfishal made it out the other day and found some weedlines along a rip about 20 miles out this past weekend. They were able to put a few mahi in the boat, with a couple of decent ones in there (picture of Jacob and Paz with a mahi by Superfishal owner and Captain Dave Elliott). As the winds come in more steadily (and consistently!) out of the southeast, the rips and weedlines should line up nicely and provide a good month of steady mahi action

I know, it’s hard to slow down after the blast of energy yesterday. But this is a good day to pull back a bit and to stick to routine. Green lights come on with Luna changing signs and there is a lovely kiss in the heavens at 7:49 PM. Turns out sweet Venus snuck into Gemini yesterday and the Moon meets her tonight—this is a tender moment. Who you are talking to then is up to you.

THE WEEKEND: Chatty. The Moon in loquacious Gemini sails out into calm seas Saturday morning and green lights are up.

Luna makes a welcome sextile to friendly Uranus at 2:07 PM suggesting a good time to buy computers, cars and phones, ruled

by Uranus. The Sun and Mercury meet in the heavens at 4:10 PM—speak up. There’s nothing else to note in the Skywatch Saturday night.

The only exact event in the heavens on Sunday occurs at 8:32 AM when the Moon meets optimistic Jupiter in the heavens. The good vibes in this pair will hang around Sunday morning. But Luna turns Void of Course a minute later until she enters Cancer early Monday morning. V/C hours are wonderful for pulling back from the material world and enjoying the spiritual side of things, including art, music and nature. Save shopping trips for another time. Monday, May 13. Sweet but confusing. The Moon enters home sign Cancer at 4:57 AM early Monday morning and sails out into calm seas. Green lights are sorta up for work and play but realize that people and events may not be quite as they appear on Monday. Be certain to double-check the details around all financial transactions as sweet Venus squares dreamy (and maybe deceitful or drugged) Neptune at 3:48 PM Monday afternoon.

Most helpful is that the Moon trines psychic Neptune at 3:32 PM—your instincts and gut reactions are likely to be accurate, impossible to deceive. By Dotson Lewis I am 84 years old and have been driving since I was 14. If you try to “ground” me, you will have a fight on your hands!

Editor’s Note: Dotson has been a volunteer driving safety program instructor for older adults for 15 years.

Dotson’s note: Taking the car keys away from a relative or friend is a momentous step which should be handled with care and love. Here are some thoughts that are designed to help all involved through this very emotional time in the life of an older adult.

Although unsafe driving may be an uncomfortable subject, these ongoing conversations over time will help older adults weigh decisions and agree to drive less, avoid certain road conditions or stop driving. Of the older adults surveyed who reported that someone had talked with them about their driving, more than half said they followed the suggestions of others. Women generally complied more readily than men.

How is your reaction time?

When faced with a discussion about driving abilities, with whom do older adults prefer to talk?

Hearing sensitive information from the right person can make a big difference. To increase the chances of success, carefully select the person who will initiate the discussion and have others reinforce decisions about driving. Older adults typically prefer to speak confidentially about driving safety with someone they trust.

Often family members can form a united front with doctors and friends to help older drivers make good driving decisions.

When choosing a family member to initiate the discussion, consider the personalities involved and past experience approaching difficult topics.

Some families mistakenly assign the most outspoken or authoritative member to deliver their concerns as an ultimatum. Such persons are not ideal to open the early discussion on driving, but may better serve as the enforcer of driving decisions.
