Around The Island
By Dale Rankin editor@islandmoon.com
It’s starting to feel like winter on our little sandbar. Our eighth cold front of the season blew through with a furry last weekend. We’ll name this one Inza after Inza’s Lonesome Coyote Saloon. According to the Weather Wonks another one will try to spoil the Friday night La Posada Boat Parade but by Saturday the temps are predicted to be in the 70s. Here’s hoping the Weather Wonks get this one right.

Events started at 5:00PM with the United States Marines Color Guard presenting the Colors as Russell Edge sang the National Anthem. The presentation of the Flag by a Marine Color Guard always makes a strong impression and reminds us of the sense of duty and honor these brave warriors carry with them. It’s true! It’s true! For the first time in recorded history there has been a Kaabaf sighting. Moon Mike always claimed he had seen one of the mystical creatures who, according to local lore, live under the bottom of the Laguna Madre and only come out during the Winter Solstice. We weren’t sure if he was pulling our leg or not but apparently he wasn’t as these guys were walking along Aquarius last week. They were a little early since the solstice isn’t until December 21st but maybe it’s because the early Kaafab gets the…whatever it is that Kaafabs eat. And you all know what this means; if there is a Kaafab there must be a Santa Clause – as if there was ever any doubt.
Theislandmoonnewspaper We mentioned awhile back that one of the local television news organizations is using our newspaper Facebook page to mine stories. In fact they are using our Facebook page the way the Indians used the buffalo. In one way we are flattered but we would be even more flattered if they would occasionally mention where they got their stories. Once we called them on it they stopped calling us and started calling our readers directly. So if you get a call from a TV hairdo ask them if they got the story from the Island Moon and thank them for reading. Or something.
Dog friendly Island And speaking of the Facebook page, we want to send a Moon Atta Boy out to all the many Islanders who go out of their way every week to help the stray dogs that thoughtless people abandon on our Island. They know, correctly, that we Islanders won’t let them go hungry. Every week we get numerous hits from people who have rescued dogs and are looking for the owners. Many belong to Islanders who are looking for them, but unfortunately many are also dumped here. This week we had one hit by a car that rescuers had been trying for weeks to catch. (See Letters to the Editor).
After the Color Guard, Russell led us with Christmas Carols. The crowd joined in and sang heartily. At the break, cookies, punch and hot chocolate were served to all and door prizes were awarded. La Posada continued on A4
La Posada Calendar: Friday, December 13: LaPosada Lighted Boat Parade-North Side Saturday, December 14: LaPosada Lighted Boat Parade-South Side Please remember the underlying reason for the LaPosada is to place a smile on a needy child’s face by providing the United States Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” program with as many toys as we possibly can. Please bring a toy or several to every event you attend.
1 of 1 Santa Made It to the Island By Brent Rourk The rumors were true. In spite harsh and freezing weather, Santa (and Mrs. Claus) made a quick stop on the island last Saturday to visit with local children during the annual Kiwanis Club sponsored ‘Breakfast With Santa’ at the Saint Andrews By the Sea Catholic Church. After filling up on hot pancakes, sausage, juice, and milk, about two hundred children patiently waited for their turn with the rotund, red-clad jolly fellow.
We figure that just like there is a special place in purgatory for the people who think it’s okay to dump a dog and leave it to fend for itself, there is a special place in heaven for the people who try to help the strays. As you think of a charity to donate to in this season of giving, consider Guardians Rescue and the other organizations who devote huge amounts of time, energy, and money to helping these most helpless among us. Theirs is the true Island spirit. Enjoy the Island Holiday Season, get out there and jump into the Mother of All Deck Parties this weekend; and say hello if you see us Around The Island.

And speaking of La Posada this is the weekend for the Mother of all Deck Parties as the boats make the rounds Friday and Saturday. This year’s Saturday night parade will be a little different as the judging has been moved from the Padre Island Yacht Club to a house at the start of the route. The reason is that boats making their promenades in front of the yacht club were holding up traffic causing the boats to straggle as they entered the Main Canal. This year with the judging at the starting line the procession should maintain good spacing as they make their way through the route. This will make it easier for the collecting boats to pick up toys from decks and keep things moving along. Remember the boats with the yellow flashing lights and/or those with Marines on board are the collection boats so get your toys ready!

Light 'em up! It's time to La Posada everybody!
Facing more smiles and wide eyes than cries, Santa bellowed his characteristic ‘HoHo-Ho’ as children approached his large and comfortable chair. Mrs. Claus and local elves from the Seashore Middle School Builders’ Club assisted while a busy photographer rapidly snapped keepsake photos of every child’s meeting with Santa. Santa continued on A3
By Dale Rankin After it was all over they named him Lucky. But Lucky’s day didn’t start out so lucky. He/she was flying along over SPID near the JFK Causeway when all of a sudden a fish hooking hanging from a piece of fishing line that was wrapped around a power line snagged Lucky in mid-flight.
So there hung Lucky, fifteen feet over the water hanging upside down within sight of the speeding traffic lanes. This is where the lucky part comes in. Maureen and Phil Magasich were driving around looking for cold-stunned sea turtles Rescue continued on A9

Did you know that we had a foster home prepared and waiting for her. We envisioned her in her new forever home...curled up in front of a fireplace, maybe playing with children. We wanted that so badly for her.
We wanted to have her cremated. We thought that she deserved at least to be treated with respect and not taken to the city dump. We went to retrieve her...we had the vet waiting for our arrival. Her body was gone. I never got to pet her. I wanted so badly to pet her while she was alive. I had resigned myself to the fact that i was finally going to be able to pet her, but she was gone. We've cried a river of tears for your throwaway dog. We will cry ourselves to sleep tonight. Every time we drive past the sites where we tried to get her, we will remember her. Damn you for what you did to her. May karma bite you and bite you HARD! We named your baby Foxy Girl. Rest in eternal peace, beautiful Foxy Girl. You WERE loved... you WILL be missed!!

Do you know that we loved her. Can you tell? Why didn't YOU?? Why did you dump her? Why did you give up on her? Why didn't you try harder to find a new home for her if you didn't want her anymore?

You have no way of knowing that many people were concerned for her. Many would call with sightings and I or my friends would go running to try to coax your pup to trust someone. Morning or night, it didn't matter...we would run to try one more time.
If you drive around the island and see milk jugs that have been cut in half, those are mine... that's how i fed and watered her. They're still out there. They are a sad reminder to us all now.

seen coming every evening and leaving every morning, but no one knew where exactly she spent her nights. The workers at Schlitterbahn were also feeding her and trying to befriend her. She would circle around Dasmarinas and Aquarius many times a day and would travel up and down Whitecap. But the thing that worried us the most was when she would go to the Park Road. Did you know your dog had absolutely no street smarts? She would dart right into the traffic. She was witnessed almost being hit dozens of times. Today she wasn't so lucky.
Did you worry about her when the first cold front came in? WE DID! Every one of us were worried sick over her...hoping that she had found some shelter. She became very skinny during that cold front, but she had started filling back in again. We all were once again worried, thinking about this new cold front today... hoping that she wouldn't lose the weight that we had worked so hard to put back on her.

This precious girl lost her life today on Park Road 22. Did you dump her? Did you know that she was so afraid of people that she would not let anyone rescue her? That she spent her days roaming the island, from one end to the other. She was first spotted by my friend right in front of Best Western about 3 weeks ago. Ironically, that is exactly where she lost her life today. She was spotted as far away as the Yacht Club. She traveled miles every day looking for you.

I lost my dog and close personal friend yesterday, he and I have been together 12 years and he's been at my side through the loss of my daughter and brother, through every up and down a person could have. But it was the finding him that brought the greatest blessing, because it was a community of truly fine and helping people that found him, looked after him and searched relentless to find me, that put us back together again. I've lived all over the country but never in a place like this. I am very proud to call this my home. I owe everyone here a favor and will find away to pay it and pay it forward from here on out. Thank you all very much.

Dale So sad to read about that poor dog. You must, must point out this would not have happened if the owners were following the law and had their pet on a leash. Santa continued from A1 Arriving at the event with a memorized list of gifts, every child, without exception, gave straight-faced, absolute assurance that they had been very good all year long. A surprise? No! How could anybody assume anything different? Barbies, Kindles, X-Box, and iPhones clearly top this year’s extensive list of wants, yet other children requested golf clubs, a jeep, a talking dog, a laughing monkey, baseball bat, teddy bear, harmonicas, Legos, Nerf Gun, $1,000,000 (good luck with that one) and more. Apparently, Santa and his Northern Homies have their work cut out for them this year. Kiwanis Club of Padre Island members organized the event, cooked the delicious breakfast, sold nuts and other delectable Christmas treats, and collected toys that every family brought as a contribution. The toys will be donated to several charitable causes such as Timon’s Ministries, CASA, Toys for Tots, and the Foster Child Program. There were hardly any pancakes and sausages left; a testament
Thanks also to the generous parents who took time on a chilly and blustery morning to take their children to this popular and fun island event. They brought their children along with a toy donation and left with smiles, full bellies, a visit with Santa, a photograph, and hopes that a surprise will be waiting for them under the tree on Christmas morning.

La Posada Parade Routes Boat registration form on A7

La Posada continued from A1
Just as the Christmas Carols started again a super long limo arrived and much to the delight of the children present, Santa Claus emerged waving and smiling. Santa was escorted to the 12 foot tall Christmas tree by 2 US Marines. Santa lit the Christmas Tree that officially started the LaPosada Season.
As anticipated by all the children Santa took requests from the kiddos for their Christmas Wishes while they sat on his knee. Much to everyone’s surprise several ladies also requested an audience with Santa and proceeded to sit on his knee and make their requests. After the ceremonies were completed the Marines and Santa stayed and mingled with the crowd. Multiple “Toys for Tots” boxes were filled by guests with their donations which also included a 3.5 foot teddy bear.

Backwater Adventures Drum Hunting
On the Rocks
By Joey Farah
By Jay Gardner
“Now is the winter of our discontent” my Keister! I told everyone to “hang on!” and I pushed the throttles down on the skiff and took the corner from the canal into the ICWW. Keith and his buddy Randy from Ohio were down to get in a little fishing on a short vacation. Despite the 30 MPH north wind running straight down the pipe and wind chills likely around freezing, we headed out to chase some fish in the canals. When you travel all that way, there’s no sitting around wishing for better weather; as my mentor Billy Sandifer is quoted as saying, “you suit up, and show up.”
that the school had moved on. Keith took back off into the wilderness, and Randy and I stood around shivering and started making noise about moving on. Although the action was slow, we already had plenty of fish for dinner and with a quick vote we told Keith that 2/3rds of the democracy was ready for a warm place with cold drinks.
Destination Scuttlebutt’s After putting the boat away and cleaning the fish, we decided to head to Scuttle’s and have them cook up the day’s catch. With 4 pounds of fish from two fish, we had them cook it up
Farah’s Fishing Adventures The big boxes of black Drum continue to dominate our fishing in the Laguna Madre’ and Baffin Bay area. The areas to our north are also seeing good catches of drum along with redfish and sheep head in the last few weeks. With the cold temperatures in our bays look for most of the fish in the deeper holes and channels, were bait and game fish will be holding tight to the bottom. For anglers, finding that magic spot is challenging at least. When one gets into the right spot some unbelievable catching can result. From the stand point of the fish, not all places are created equal. Situations such as water temperature, current, water clarity, and above all, presence of a good food source. When you get out on the water take these factors in mind and remember that a small move of only a few yards can put you “ZEROED OR A HERO.” For anglers out to cash in on some great winter fishing leave no stone unturned and use a few of these helpful tricks to get those cold poles turned double.
Soft mud bottoms The key to winter survival for most all of our inland bay species is soft mud bottoms. In the deeper holes shrimp, crabs, mud mites, eels, and worms all burry up for the winter months. Small baitfish along with game fish species feed on these through the year, but in the winter months they are concentrated in the deeper channels and winter holes. The black drum have a diet consisting of most of these under-mud creatures along with small clams and shellfish. To find areas where herds of drum are holding one must play a game of spot checking. The best way is to remain mobile and move small distances paying close attention to the current and bottom type.
Keith with his redfish
We figured that since Randy was from Ohio that he would be just fine, but he was already alluding to the cold before we got the boat motor kicked off on Bizzy’s lift. Thank goodness we turned left, traveling down-wind, because the wind chill was completely brutal despite being dressed for a North Pole attempt. We eased from the old canals to the new canals, a short two- mile run that feels like eternity when you’re trying to keep from chattering your teeth out of your head.
Fish in the canals
The canals were surprisingly crowded; word has been out for weeks about the fish being there. Some folks were anchored, some were drifting along. Since I have continued to neglect to get an anchor in Jeff’s skiff, we had to get out and walk along the edge of the water to fish. No one had any gloves on, and it was really tough fishing. Nothing happened for the first 45 minutes; no one even got a bump. As I was reeling in a cast quickly about to move on down the line a little, I got a solid “thump!” and managed to snap out of my daze quick enough to barely set the hook. Thankfully the fat redfish took care of that for me, and after a few minutes pulled in a nice 26”.
As I walked the fish back towards the boat, Keith had a solid strike and was on a fish. He played his quickly, and soon enough had an exact twin 26” redfish on the bank and then in the box. A few more casts later, and we realized
several different ways, and no one could agree on which was the best. It was ALL tasty! We weren’t able to finish it all. After dinner and a few more drinks, we started asking what the plan was for the rest of the evening. The only thing we could come up with was huddling around my propane heater on my front porch. With that in mind, we just continued to sit there at Scuttles enjoying the heat and adult beverages while the football games turned the BCS upside down on the TV’s. Thank goodness it wasn’t crazy busy and we were able to loiter most of the evening in the comfort.
Popsicles and better climes Well folks the “holidaze” are quickly upon us, and I haven’t even started shopping yet. Thankfully during the summer I was saving all my popsicle sticks, so I guess I’d better track down that glue and get to work on the presents. All I want for Christmas is some decent weather, but we’ll see what I wind up with in my stocking. Don’t forget duck season cranks back up this weekend, and in addition, next weekend dove season re-opens for second season here in South Texas. With deer, duck, sandhill crane, quail, and dove season open, it’s a great time to get out there and enjoy hunting season. Make sure you have your licenses and stamps, and I’ll see you out there In the Field. Err, on the rocks!
Turtles continued from A1 transport to a rehabilitation facility. We are pleased that so many were found alive and this success is directly attributable to the hard work of many people braving cold temperatures to search for and rescue these turtles. Live turtles were transported to rehabilitation facilities. The prognosis for recovery and release is very good for turtles that are quickly rescued and transported to rehabilitation facilities. Unfortunately, those that are not found quickly often die due to exposure to the elements or predation. Most of the turtles held locally are being cared for by Tony Amos and his volunteers at the ARK, and a few are being cared for by volunteers at the Sea Life Center. Elsewhere Cold stun rescue training held on Saturday, December 7th. 92 people attended. in the state, most cold stunned turtles are being housed at Sea Turtle, Inc., but a few that were on-going for cold stunned turtles that are also at the NOAA Laboratory in Galveston, day. Some even found a few cold stranded Texas and Gladys Porter Zoo and Aquarium. turtles.
Cold Stunning Presentation and Training December 7 We are very pleased to report that 92 people attended our presentation and training session to inform people about how they can help find and protect stranded sea turtles during these difficult events. It was attended by some citizens as well as volunteers and staff members from Padre Island National Seashore, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, ARK, Sea Life Center, and Sea World of Texas. The session was held at the Seashore Learning Center Gymnasium on December 7. Immediately after it ended several participants bundled up and aided with searches
Cold stunned green turtles enjoying rehab
When tides are roaring through an area they pick up sediments and with them food organisms, this creates a feeding frenzy. Drum will suspend in the deeper parts of the channel along the Intracoastal Canal and find the flow of warm water off of the shallow edges to pass the time until bait starts streaming bye. Many times fast currents will push fish to the edges of intersecting channels and small dips and curves along the edge of the drop-off. In my pursuit of the drum along with other game fish, I pull up and deploy live shrimp with Carolina Rigged set-ups. The line should slide effortlessly through your weight to a good leader with a #2-#4 quality circle hook. I like this rig because the bait can swim freely and when the drum suck in the bait they will feel no resistance. When fishing this way for trout I use a short leader, with drum and reds try to lengthen the leader to at least twenty inches and as long as three feet. Many times the line will just move off, never set the hook on the drum with a fast jerk. Reel the line tight and slowly sweep the rod to tighten the line. The areas along the Intracoastal, Packery Channel, and the Lydia Anne Channel in Port A are great places to look for gravel sand beaches or sand pockets that will hold black drum, the gravel sand is tiny
Report Cold Stunned Turtles It will continue to be cold for the next few days and we expect that more turtles will be affected by the cold. Please continue to watch for cold stunned sea turtles throughout the winter. The area where these turtles could strand is vast and we can use your assistance in spotting these debilitated animals. To report cold stunned turtles (found alive or dead) please call Padre Island National Seashore staff at 361-949-8173, ext. 226 (business hours) or 361-876-8462 (after hours) if you are at/near the Upper Laguna Madre and North Padre Island. If you are at/near Corpus Christi Bay and Mustang Island, call the ARK at 361-749-6793 (business hours) or Tony Amos at 361-442-7638. Elsewhere in Texas, call 1-866-TURTLE5 to get the appropriate contact number for your region. Please call even if you think that the cold stunned turtle is dead. At cold temperatures these turtles become very inactive and can appear to be dead when they are actually alive. To receive the latest information when cold stunning occurs, you can follow us on our Facebook page titled Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery.
shells of the small clams that they eat. When you are fishing, clumps of dead grass are a bad sign and will cover your bait and rigs. Dead grass also makes it hard for drum and redfish hunting the bottom to find food. The currents will normally move large mats of grass around so look up-current for cleaner bottoms and fish that have settled in after the last feeding time.
Common Scents The use of scent additives peaks during the winter months and can really turn on your fishing and light up your spot. I normally pull up to a spot and cast out lines along the edge and others leading out to the deepest part of the area. I immediately take a few live shrimp and dice them up in tiny pieces with a pair of scissors. This will send scent and proteins that fish react to and bring dormant fish up to feed. Changing out baits often also will keep an ongoing subtle chum line fresh. Adding a small piece of FISH BITES or cutting small pieces of GULP Plastics to your bait hook can add scent and give you a last chance to catch the fish that pulls the shrimp off the hook. Often we feel the bait getting torn off then they circle back around for that last little piece. When a drum is hooked my first reaction is to reel in the other lines to keep them from getting tangled, check the bait and send them out in the same place we just hooked up. They move together in packs of five to fifty, sometimes larger. Staying active when the school is upon you is key in landing a boat full compared to just one or two fish. Start chumming with fresh bait when you find some drum and don’t stop catching for pictures until the action slows. This is when having multiple rods ready for change out if you get broke off or hooks get bent, etc. The fishing for drum is on fire right now in the channels of North Padre and Port A, these same techniques can be used behind the house as well. Some old tricks include scraping the barnacles off of the cement to create chum for sheep head and drum. We used to chum the area with canned seafood and cat food. There is a fine balance in our area between improving your odds with chum and calling in every perch and hardhead in the area. When fishing for the drum always have a good net close bye, many times fish will fall off, snap lines, and break rods when anglers pull these heavy weights over the rail or up to the dock.
Season for Black Drum As most people know the Black Drum are awesome to eat and a lot of fun to catch, long powerful runs and screaming drag. The time is here when trout fishing can be great but for the most part they are on a wintertime diet of only eating every few days, so for consistent success turn towards the Black Drum for your Holiday Fish Hunting. I’ve already had some Island customers take me up on my Holiday Special of discounted trips during the week for both visiting friends and family that may be coming in for the Holidays, but also the $200 discount goes for Christmas Gift Certificates that are perfect for the person that has everything fishing already. They can use them when they wish throughout the year and I put together a nice packet with various magazines and MOON issues that I write for so that they can get pumped up for their trip. This winter has been a cold one so far, that will be a good factor going into the New Year as cold water temperatures can kill ALGAE BLOOMS, if we can dodge any winter fish kills we will be blessed with continued fabulous fishing through the spring. Get out on the water and enjoy the chill, get into the CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!

Island Moon
Letters to Riley
Bad Dogs
by Dale Rankin
Traffic
Dear Riley:
Anyone who was on The Island the last two summers already knows we are reaching terminal levels of beach attendance and that means mucho traffic snarls. Up to this point we have used a Muddling Through approach to dealing with this problem as each entity along the way attacks it within their own jurisdiction with little regard for what their neighbors are doing. This has served only to kick the can down the street as the problem is almost thirty miles long; in fact traffic flow from Aransas Pass and all the way down The Island to the JFK Causeway is one continuous headless snake where a traffic snarl at one end has consequences at the other.
I am 10 weeks old. Some of my little doggie friends say there is no Santa Paws. Papa says "If you see it in The Moon, it's so". Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Paws? Dee Dee Skowronski
Port Aransas has addressed the problem by pushing forward with a plan that will add a traffic lane to SH 361 on the south end of town by next summer. That will help some but is only a start.
Dee Dee Skawronski Hey Dee Dee, Of course there’s a Santa Paws Dee Dee. You’re just a puppy so you may not know yet, but he’s out there and pretty soon he’ll take you to the beach and you’ll understand. He doesn’t wear a red suit and he doesn’t live at the North Pole around here he mostly wears flip flops and smells like bait.
I eat bunny poop! to watch out. “WATCH OUT YOU STOOPID CAT A GIANT OWL IS TRYING TO EAT YOU!!!” But the cat wouldn’t listen. Stoopid Cat. Just sat there under a chair looking around like stoopid owl bait. But my barking kept the bird away until my humans showed up. “What
He’s not really one human he’s a whole bunch of humans and our Island is covered with Santa Paws. They pick up the stray dogs that inhuman humans dump here because they know people on The Island will pick them up and take care of them. On the weekends you can see Santa Paws with Guardians Rescue spending their weekends to set up adoptions for dogs that need a place to live. There are Santa Paws all over The Island who pick up strays and help them find their lost humans.
Ferry landings
is it Riley P? Is Little Timmy in the well?” “No you Stoopid Human can’t you see that giant bird trying to eat the albino cat!?” And then when my human opened the door the owl flew away and the cat acted like nothing happened! It’s hard to be the brains of the outfit. Stoopid Humans! Stoopid Cat!
Banana cakes I'm in time-out because I stole Jose (the painter's) lunch! -Finn
Then my humans started hauling stuff out of the house and that makes me nervous. They cleaned out the refrigerator and threw away two perfectly good banana cakes that just sat there
There are the nice humans who let us dogs, and even some Stoopid Cats, come into their homes and businesses, and there’s even a group trying to get us a Dog Park so we can tailpipe without our leashes. They let us ride in their boats and surfboards and hang our heads out the windows of their cars so we can pretend we’re flying. Sometimes they feed us hotdogs but not enough. More hotdogs Santa Paws. They take us over to Dr. Christi when our ears hang low to get us fixed up and she takes care of us.
in the garbage bag mocking me. So I ate ‘em both. At night after my humans were asleep I ate the first one. The next morning nobody said anything so I figured it was okay to eat the second one so I did but this time I missed some crumbs that my human found and when she checked the trash there were no banana cakes and somehow she knew I ate ‘em. I think the cat may have ratted me out. Next time she’s owl bait.
Hello. My name is Rossi and I have a drinking problem. It's been 37 days... 0 days since I drank a case of juice Lately Santa Paws has been busy taking care of our Cold Turtle Friends. For some reason turtles don’t like cold weather and they all end up on the beach and the Santa Paws humans go out there in the cold and pick them up and take them to get warm. And then when they get warm they put them back in the water. Santa Paws likes turtles too.
So just give it a little time Dee Dee and you’ll see that Santa Paws doesn’t live at the North Pole, when it comes to Santa Paws the North Pole is Padre Island because Santa Paws lives here.
It's 2 A.M. Let me sing you the song of my people. So just to remind my humans that eating banana cakes out of the trash isn’t the worst thing a dog ever did, here’s my Top Bad Dogs of the Week! I’m just a Banana Cake Eater but these are some Bad Dogs…
Flying Owl Dogs It’s been a tough week for me, Riley P. Dog. First the Great Horned Owl came back and tried to carry off my cat again. I only got one cat left and I’m not all that fond of her but I can’t let a bird carry her away on my watch. The Stoopid Cat jumped off the roof onto the back patio and before she jumped she had to tell everybody where she was and that included the owl and he heard her talking and came swooping down to try and get her. I was trapped inside but I could see the owl behind the cat and I tried to tell her
The biggest bottleneck in the system is at the ferry landings in Port Aransas where the addition of two new, larger ferry boats has had no noticeable effect on the ferry lines. Part of the problem, if problem is the right word, is the number of new jobs that have sprung up working on the huge rigs in the Ingleside area. There are now more than 6000 workers drawing paychecks there and many of them head out at five p.m. Islanders who work there can travel by ferry in the morning when lines are short, but in the afternoon they return home by the longer roundabout route through town. There are already three more big developments coming to that area so the situation will only get worse. Statistics show that while the number of people moving to Port A and The Island in general since 2000 has increased dramatically the number of cars crossing the ferries has shown only a scant increase.
I decapitated the patron saint of animals -Dexter
Somehow, someway, this has to change and Rep. Hunter’s office is pushing for a plan.
ATVs on the beach
On September of this year the use of All Terrain Vehicles on the beach became legal in Texas. This came as a bit of a surprise to officials in the Coastal Bend who are now trying to figure out how they feel about that. While the beaches belong to the state they are regulated by the various cities within their city limits. The City of Port Aransas is pushing through an ordinance that would ban them on beaches there and at the next Nueces County Coastal Parks Board meeting several Corpus Christi City Council members have been invited to come up with a unified plan going forward. If you have a dog in this fight now is the time to speak up.
GLO land buy
As of this week it looks like a plan is in place to put 3860 acres of land located just north of Padre Island National Seashore under the control of the Nueces County Coastal Parks Board. A white knight has agreed to purchase the land, about $3 million, and give it to Kleberg County which will in turn place its operation and maintenance under the supervision of Nueces County. The arm of county government in charge will be, according to the plan, the Coastal Parks Board.
Of all the possible outcomes when this began this one is the best of all possible worlds. It keeps control in local hands and the park board under the direction of Charlie Zahn has done yeoman’s work over the years with the very successful improvements to both Bob Hall and Horace Caldwell piers and the even more successful addition of the new building and restaurant at Bob Hall.
The only stipulation in the purchase is that the land, including the beach, must remain completely open to the public and used for recreation. A kayak launch on the Laguna side is under consideration and more amenities are likely. The plan calls for the Nueces County Constable’s Office in Port Aransas to supply law enforcement.
This one looks to be a happy ending and we congratulate Rep. Hunter and Islander Greg Smith, among others, for their good work.
Don’t jinx it
I hesitate to mention it because I don’t want to jinx it but there is a move afoot to bring an honest to goodness grocery store to The Island. A site has been identified and due diligence is underway. All I have heard for certain is that it is not an HEB. So now you know as much as I do and hopefully The Island will soon be echoing with the sound of, “cleanup on aisle three!”
Beach continued from A1 said. “My initial thoughts are that the line would be further north (than the seawall), but this would really need to be discussed between Parks and all of the stakeholders on The Island.” The improvements are currently at Phase 3 which is in the design phase and will bring permanent restrooms to the beach on the north side of the channel. Next in the plans are restrooms for the south side of the channel, ADA ramps on both of the jetties, a pavilion on the north side and, finally, ADA parking on the beach on the south side which is Phase 7 and is schedule to be in place by 2015 and would include the vehicles ban.
I ate the couch
If Santa Paws was just one human Dee Dee he/ she would live on The Island because we Island dogs have it just about as good as it gets for dogs and once a year Santa Paws would get on his sleigh – I think it would be pulled by cats but I’m not sure – and he would spread Island Dog and Turtle Cheer to the other dogs and turtles that have to live OTB. I feel sorry for those OTB dogs – I don’t think there are any OTB turtles.
On North Padre Island we have used a Head in the Sand approach and done, well, absolutely nothing but complain. The problem was the subject of a meeting in State Representative Todd Hunters office this week with an eye toward widening SH 361 by two lanes and eventually adding another causeway that will connect Yorktown Road in Flour Bluff to Sea Pines on The Island. Both of those are still down the road a way but as our Chinese friends say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. If we don’t get out ahead of this problem it can crush us.
I climbed up on the counter and peed on the apples.

Stuff I Heard on the Island
There been a lot to hear about on our little sandbar this week. In no particular order here’s some of what’s making the rounds.
By Riley P. Dog
The addition of the new parking lot would allow for removing vehicles since it complies with the state requirement that a parking spot be created for each 15 feet of beach where vehicles are banned. However, the move raises the specter of another contentious debate about removing vehicles from the beach. Rancor still remains from the election in November, 2006 in which voters citywide voted 55%-45% against banning traffic from the 7200 feet of beach between the South Packery Jetty and Padre Balli Park as part of a plan to bring a $1.5 billion development to the area. Beachgoers, fearing further vehicle bans, turned out in large numbers to not only vote down the ban but approved a charter amendment which requires a citywide vote on any future plan to remove vehicles from any beach inside Corpus
Christi City Limits.
It is not clear whether the newly proposed plan would require a vote by citizens.
A plan passed by voters citywide in 2008 and approved by the Texas General Land Office called for placing traffic-stopping bollards in a line parallel to the water from the seawall to the south jetty one hundred feet behind the mean high tide line. That plan has been in place for more than four years but has never been acted on by the city.
A previous plan agreed to by both landowners along the seawall and the city called for vehicles to be removed from the beach in front of the seawall in exchange for the building of a parking lot there. Property owners bought the land along the seawall for $500,000 and donated it to the city which finished construction of the lot more than three years ago but the removal of the vehicles never took place, in spite of the 2008 vote.
The current plan to remove vehicles from the beach south of the seawall was not mentioned during several presentations to the Island Strategic Action Committee but will likely be taken up there now that the plan has come to public attention.

STATE
Historical maps posted on the Texas General Land Office website make quick, easy gifts for anyone who loves the Lone Star State and its colorful past. But best of all, proceeds from the sales preserve historic documents and help Save Texas History.
“Buying a map at SaveTexasHistory.com is not only a breeze, it will help preserve the very documents that tell the story of Texas,” said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. “We receive no funding from the Legislature to preserve the priceless historical documents we are entrusted with — this is how we do it.”
Maps from the General Land Office are not just beautiful and unique gifts, they’re educational, Patterson notes. “Texas history is an epic tale,” Patterson said. “These maps don’t just tell that history — they show it.”
For example, Patterson said, a German map of the Kingdom of New Spain — hand-drawn in 1720 — shows that Texas began as a part of the Spanish Empire, ruled from Mexico. “The first illegal immigrants to Texas had names a lot like mine,” Patterson said. “Understanding our history gives you the context you need to better deal with the issues of today. Plus, this map just looks great on any wall.”

A perennial top-seller is an 1845 commemorative map showing the full size of the Republic of Texas when it stretched all the way up to present-day Colorado. Another favorite is an 1889 map — the first of its kind — that shows Texas as it is today, and is decorated with period advertising around the margins.

‘Tis the Season for Giving (part II) By Todd Hunter, District 32 As we approach the Christmas holidays, I am using this column to raise awareness for charitable causes that are helping those in our area who are vulnerable, less fortunate and in need. In last week's article, I highlighted ways in which you can give a gift to a child in need. There are more than 50 drop-off locations throughout the Coastal Bend where unwrapped toys are being collected for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's "Toys for Tots" program. Also, The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) are collecting gifts for children in the state's foster care system. For more information on how and where to donate a gift, please don't hesitate to call either my Capitol or District office for more information.
care system. If you are interested in making a contribution to this organization, they can be contacted at:
This week, I wanted to feature another great organization here in the Coastal Bend and that is the Foster Angels of South Texas. This group works hand in hand with many local and statewide foster care agencies here in the state such as Child Protective Services, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Spaulding for Children, and Foster Youth Life Investment Partners. Together, last year alone, they helped more than 2,500 children in foster care system just here in Region 11.
You can help by either making a monetary contribution through the food bank website (www.foodbankofcorpuschristi.org) or by donating food directly to the food bank. If you would like to donate food, they are always in need of nutritious, non-perishable foods such as: meals in a can (stew, chili, soup), tuna / canned meat, peanut butter, canned foods with poptop lids, low sugar cereals, 100% fruit juices in single serving boxes, canned fruit packed in juice, and canned vegetables (low salt). Our local food bank can be located at:
Foster Angels of South Texas has a core philosophy of finding and exposing positive influences to those foster children who are currently here in South Texas. Many of the services they provide seek to bridge the gap for those goods and services that may not be provided by state resources such as clothing, education, food, as well as the many various medical needs to those in foster care. In many cases, these small contributions can make a strong impact on mental well-being and selfesteem of the many children they work with. As a local organization, they strive to keep the administrative costs of operation low and use the funds they raise locally. During this holiday season, groups like Foster Angels of South Texas do a remarkable job in working to help those children who are currently in foster
AUSTIN – Texas Parks and Wildlife’s game warden force has become only the fourth state conservation law enforcement agency to be accredited by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Boat Operations and Training (BOAT) Program. “As the Texas Navy, our game wardens and the vessels they operate have an important role in maintaining the state’s maritime security, in addition to their day-to-day work in enforcing our conservation laws,” said TPWD Executive Director Carter Smith. “The training the wardens willreceive by way of this accreditation will make these men and women and our coastwide fleet even more effective.” Though the Republic of Texas had a battlehardened navy in the 1830s and 1840s, it was former Gov. George W. Bush who first referred to TPWD’s modern fleet as the “Texas Navy.” Since then, the department’s fleet has grown to include 564 vessels, including two 65-foot Gulf of Mexico patrol vessels, 26 Safeboats (a highspeed boat with an enclosed cabin that can be used in bays or the open Gulf) and a myriad of specialized vessels including 5 gun boats equipped with .30 caliber machine guns. “For over 100 years, the TPWD game wardens have patrolled the land and waterways of our great state, protecting public safety and preserving our natural resources,” Gov. Rick Perry said. “They have set the gold standard for maritime operations, and this accreditation affirms their role as one of the nation’s elite law enforcement and emergency response operations.” In addition to the game wardens who operate patrol vessels on the state’s public waters, TPWD’s Maritime Tactical Operations Group is a specialized unit made up of specially

trained and equipped game wardens who can respond to critical waterborne incidents or other unique maritime operations. “Now that our tactical maritime team has this prestigious accreditation, we will be working even more closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies with a maritime focus to protect the Texas coast for any contingency,” Smith said. In preparation for their accreditation, the Law Enforcement Division developed strict training andpolicies to facilitate training in a wide range of maritime functions, including boat crew member training, boat operator search and rescue, boating accident investigation, boating under the influence enforcement, officer water survival, tactical boat operations, pursuit and stop techniques and small vessel radiationnuclear device detection operations. “Effective partnering at multiple levels of government is the key to Homeland Security," said Rear Admiral Kevin Cook, Commander, 8thCoast Guard District. "Our relationship with Texas Parks and Wildlife is based on mutual concern for the safety and security of port operators and the maritime public. This accreditation further assures common standards of training and seamless integration between our organizations, which increases both organizations' overall readiness to respond." The NASBLA accreditation is based on U.S. Coast Guard-recognized national standards for the training, qualification, credentialing and typing of maritime law enforcement and emergency first responders. The only other state law enforcement agencies with NASBLA accreditation are the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Japanese Comfort Women
Lampshades on the Head Are Out This Year By Brent Rourk
By Dotson Lewis dlewis1@stx.rr.com
My friend Mr. Ando and others are asking for a review of the government's official position on whether these “Comfort Women” were coerced into their roles. Ando said “Atrocities by members of the military such as these are a national embarrassment and those affected should be compensated as much as possible for their suffering.” Studies show that hundreds of thousands of women from Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, the Philippines, China, Indonesia, Holland and elsewhere were forced into military brothels during World War II.
taken to "comfort stations" in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. "Working" from morning ‘til evening, she had little contact with the other girls. "Even for meals, we were kept apart... There was no contact between us," she says. When the war ended and the Japanese retreated, Kim says the Americans put her in a camp, believing her to be Japanese. She only returned to South Korea at the age of 22, eight years after being taken away.
Following are a few excerpts from the many stories that have been told regarding this horrendous chapter in history.
Lee Ok-Seon-Age 90 Lee Ok-Seon spent three years in a Japanese military brothel in China against her will during WW II. Nearly 70 years after the surrender of Japan, she visited Germany to make her story known. Bravely, she talks about that tragic day when she was abducted off the street in the southeastern city of Busan by a group of men. It was late afternoon sometime between 5 and 6 pm, and Lee OkSeon was 14 years old when she was thrown into a car and trafficked to a brothel, a so-called "comfort station," in China for the Japanese military where she was raped every day until the end of the war. At that moment, she had no idea that she would never see her family again nor step foot in her home country for nearly six decades. She had no idea what torture awaited her. The 86-year-old woman does not give specific details as to what she experienced there. She summarizes it in one sentence: "It was not a place for human beings. It was a slaughter house." After she says that, her voice sounds harder. Those three years shaped the rest of her life. "When the war was over, others were set free, but not me."
Kim Bok-dong-Age 22 Kim Bok-dong was only 14 when Japanese occupying forces knocked on her parents' door and requisitioned her for what they said was wartime work in a factory. Instead, she found herself on the battlefield in a brothel where soldiers had sex with her from morning until evening, every day for years -- one of tens of thousands of girls used as "comfort women" by the Japanese military during the Second World War. "It was sexual slavery, there's no other word for it," says Kim, now 87, her face grimly set as she recalls an ordeal she forces herself to recount again and again to raise awareness of the issue -- as she is doing on a trip to Paris. Kim cuts a coquettish figure, her grey hair pinned back, a light yellow scarf draped over a flowing, blue dress, and passers-by would be hard-pressed to guess what she endured as a teenager. Kim explains that she and other girls were
Kim is hazy on the details and timing of her ordeal but says the last place she remembers being in was Singapore.
Tis the time of year again when we also celebrate Christmas by having office and company parties, taking time to pause, reflect, socialize and enjoy each other’s company. Office parties are eagerly revered and attended by some while ardently avoided by others. It is considered ‘appropriate’ or ‘in good form’ to attend these yearly parties, though not typically considered mandatory. A question for employees to ask and answer is, ‘Will not attending negatively impact my career here or peg me as an anti-company person, a rogue, or worse?” So you have keenly chosen to attend with or without a spouse or significant other and you are determined to have a good time [wise move!]. Now what are appropriate behaviors for this gala event? What behaviors are ‘in line’ with the season? The event? The company? After all, we do want to have a fun time and we understand that there might be spouses and others there, especially non-employees, who have a unique perspective. Hint: Your boss is also there. Assuming that you wish to remain employed by the company, what behaviors should you avoid at all costs? 1. Drinking too much. If there is alcohol there and you are a drinker, keep the drinking to a minimum. There is nothing worse than a loud, loose-lipped renegade running around a party making others feel uncomfortable. The party venue is not a place to get drunk, pass out, throw up, get into obnoxious conversations or really proclaim to the world what you really think about your co-workers or boss. You do not want to spout things you will regret and forget later. Remember; you might forget what happened, but others, including your boss, will not. 2. Profanities sink ships and careers. This is a social event, not your favorite football team in action. Calm down and use language that is appropriate. You are not a sailor in rough seas, but an employee at an end of the year party. Try adverbs and meaningful adjectives. 3. Shop Talk – now is not the time to talk shop. In fact, it is a time to enjoy any other
Three Comfort Women-70 years after WWI Dutch Women A set of official documents detailing how the wartime Japanese military carted off about 35 Dutch women from a prison camp in what is now Indonesia and made them provide sex as “comfort women” has been disclosed to a civic group at the National Archives of Japan in Tokyo. The documents were part of the evidence behind a 1993 statement issued by then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono in which Japan acknowledged and apologized for its military’s involvement in the recruitment of women into sexual servitude, but only their existence and outline had been known. The roughly 530 pages of documents include records of the tribunal, including indictments and rulings and also the results of interviews with the officers, and a summary of them made by the Justice Ministry was among materials collected during the drafting of the Kono statement. According to a ruling for a lieutenant general of the Imperial Japanese Army and related documents, the Dutch women detained in a camp in what was Semarang province on Java Island were taken on the orders of a Japanese officer to four “comfort stations” in the province and made to provide sex. The ruling quoted some of the officers as saying, “We asked the chief of the provincial police to select women at the camp for prostitute houses,” and, “The women were brought out by provincial officials at the request of (one officer’s name).” “The women were not told of what work they would be doing until they got into the prostitute houses,” another officer was quoted as saying.
Former Comfort Women Seeking help in 1990 Chen Chen Tai A 91-year old former comfort women said “I was a high-school student at the time [that I was forced to work at a military brothel]. I was going to school in Tainan from my home in Pingtung when I passed by a police station and a Japanese police officer asked if I needed I ride. I said: ‘No,’ but he still pulled me into the car,” Cheng Chen had to stop several times in the middle of her speech as she choked up with sobs. After being captured, I was sent off to India to work in military brothels as a prostitute for Japanese servicemen. I didn’t even have a chance to say goodbye to my family.” Cheng Chen said she was beaten if she refused to provide sex to the soldiers or if she did not do as she was told. Studies show that hundreds of thousands of women from Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, the Philippines, China, Indonesia and elsewhere in Asia were forced into military brothels during World War II. Dotson’s note: Should something be done to compensate those who are still alive and their families? Please address your comments concerns: dlewis1@stx.rr.com

Holiday Office Party Etiquette
Living History
Dotson’s Note: in a previous issue of The Island Moon: “If it is acceptable, in a future issue of the Moon we will present to you the shocking story of the Japanese military’s socalled ‘Comfort Women.’ According to Andosan ‘A true national embarrassment for the people of Japan.’ ” This is still a timely issue as, very unfortunately, human trafficking continues to be a blight on the world’s society.
and/or
conversations except shop. Get to really know others and what interests them or makes them tick: hobbies, travel, funny stories, family, a recent book or movie. It is not the time to strategize about new company strategies, undesirable company policies, or complaining about other employees.
4. Dress appropriately. Regardless of your preferred attire, a simple request to dress in a certain manner should be honored. Do you really want to show your ‘rebel’ side or your individuality now? Is it worth it? Probably not
5. Don’t be a downer. There is nothing worse than attending a social event and running into people who choose to talk about all of the negative things in their life or the world. It is a put off and people avoid the Debbie Downers in life. “Do you want to see my scar?”, is not a great conversation starter at the office party.
6. Avoid controversy. The office party is not the place to stir up controversy and debate. People are there to have fun, not debate politics, religion, or any other topic that arguably breeds polemics.
7. Avoid gossip, gawking, and grandstanding. There is no need to talk about others who work in your company. Show respect and self-respect by sticking to interesting topics that do not include your colleagues or bosses. It is not the time to gawk or flirt with others. Nor is it the time to position yourself as better, stronger, smarter, or more powerful than others. There is no competition here. Arm wrestling contests at the office party do not anoint you anything other than ‘testosterone crazed’.
8. Be loyal. There is nothing more painful than watching or hearing a person be disloyal to their company, friends, or spouse at a company social gathering. It instantly breeds mistrust and suspicion. Genuinely enjoy the party and let the both the host and the boss know that you appreciate the opportunity to mingle with them away from the office
If you successfully made it through number 8 at the party, then your job and career are probably safe and your colleagues will not avoid you on Monday. You might even still have your job.

"Lucky" the seagull might think twice before stealing bait next time... when they saw Lucky’s life literally hanging by a thread too far away from the shore for them to get to him. They started making calls and pretty soon Carlos showed up in his boat. Lucky was getting luckier. It turned out that AEP crews
were working just down the road at the parking lot next to the causeway. Before too long Billy Ashcraft showed up with a long pole with some cutting blades on the end. “This isn’t exactly in my job description,” he said, but he and Phil jumped on the boat and started trying to position it under the hapless gull. It wasn’t an easy task. A brisk northerly breeze kept trying to blow the boat under the bridge and kept Lucky swinging around like a seagull piñata at a quinceanera gone bad. The boat shifted and swayed. Carlos was spinning the wheel like nobody’s business for twenty minutes as Billy waved the cutters and Phil tried to keep the dip net under Lucky to catch him when he fell. Finally success. After several tries Billy snagged the line and snapped it but Lucky missed the dip net and splashed into the chilly water. But he didn’t panic. He seemed to know the humans were trying to help him and he just floated while the boat came about and Phil’s dip net brought him out. Finally, he was delivered to Maureen, a little worse for the wear but alive and happy; well, as happy as seagulls get. He seemed to know that without his good Samaritans he would have been a goner. Instead he was one Lucky bird.
