Around The Island

By Dale Rankin editor@islandmoon.com It has been an even busier than usual week around our Island so let’s get started.

Fruity Pebbles We’ve had a rash of attacks by the Island Fruity Pebbles Gang. They have covered the ground with the sweet breakfast treat at the end of a couple of Island cul-de-sacs but so far no milk or bananas. Their intent is unknown but they seem harmless; maybe just trying to return The Island to the Stone Age. What’s surprising is that the sea gulls don’t eat Fruity Pebbles. It takes the homeowners some time to clean them all up but if the gulls would eat them it would take even longer to clean up after the gulls; so we got that going for us. Now if we could just get them to throw down Krispy Kreme donuts…

A little warmish The water temps have been moderate of late with the turnover in Gulf water still bringing unseasonably cool water to our beaches- “cool” being a relative term of course. But the Dog Days of Summer are still upon us, Sirius is still working its magic. The Romans believed the Dog Days were an evil time when “the Sea boiled, the Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies.” Dog Days on The Island are marked by our dogs sitting by the front door telling us they want to go to the beach and “growing mad” if we don’t take them. It does tend to make us Islanders languid though so maybe there is something to it. You realize it is the Dog Days as soon as you get away from the beach and things heat up. Or as our friend Dee in Port A says, “It’s a little warmish.”

11 Foot Tiger Shark Caught Near Packery

Island RV Park Put on Hold, New Island Waterline, Water Exchange Bridge, Island Police Boat, Schlitterbahn By Dale Rankin

New RV Park on The Island. Golden Pointe, LLC. which had requested a hearing before the City Planning Commission for Wednesday, August 14, to get zoning approval for an RV park on The Island has asked that the request be tabled. No new date has been set for a hearing. The park would be located along Packery Channel near Packery Channel Park and the southern base of the JFK Causeway. Golden Pointe had requested a zoning change from CR/-2/IO to RV/IO Recreational Vehicle Park District with and Island Overlay. The plan calls for a 46-acre park with about 140 site pads. If eventually approved by the Planning Commission and the City Council the new zoning would allow travel trailers to remain at the site for up to 180 days at a time.

Year 16, Issue 487

Wayne Wimer worked to keep the shark on the hook for over 3 hours John Navar of Padre Island helped get the shark under control. Photos by Barney Welch By Barney Welch This is the tiger shark that put up a nearly three-hour fight on Wayne Wimer’s line at Padre Island, about 200 yards south of Packery Channel Friday, August 9, from 4:30 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. The shark was tagged and released. The bait used was a Bonita head and Wayne used an Avet 50w reel and custom Bimini rod (and several hundred yards of line!).

Other fishermen involved in assisting Wayne pull in the 11’4” catch include John Navar, Andrew Stensland, Ardie Hodges, and Cade Stringer.

While RV parks were not specifically allowed or prohibited under the Island Overlay Zone Ordinance passed by the city in 2004 to limit the type of construction/zoning in commercial areas of The Island, when the city passed the Universal Development Code last year the Overlay Ordinance was rolled into the UDC which does allow RV parks. As a result RV parks specifically became possible inside the Overlay Zone. It is not known whether Golden Pointe intends to re-start its request for a zoning change in the future. It is also not clear whether the request would go before the Island Strategic Action Committee for a recommendation before going to the City Council for a final decision. District 4 City Council member Colleen McIntyre said this week she will not vote in favor of an RV park on The Island. Projects continued on A5

Port A Waterslide Just because Port A doesn’t have a Schlitterbahn doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a waterslide. So what is a Port A Waterslide you ask? That’s when you sit outside on a wooden bench and sweat through your shorts to the point that you slide right off the bench. Note: the first warning sign that a Port A Waterslide is about to occur is when you reach the phenomenon commonly referred to as Swamp Butt. If you reach Swamp Butt status be aware that a Port A Waterslide is not far behind.

The Island Moon Newspaper ArtWalk and Beach Market is this Saturday on the Seawall.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Paddle!

Not to be confused with the Port A Waterslide is the Padre Island Tax Slide. It moves up instead of down. Property values went up countywide by 8.22% (no figures are yet available for Island homes but here’s guessing 8.22% is a bit on the low side) and city taxes are going up 10.22% including a tax hike and bonds.

Our Facebook page hit 3000 likes this week. We’re not sure but that seems like a lot. Since we come out once a week the stuff that happens in between we put on the Facebook page, and we are now re-building our website islandmoon. com which we hope to launch in its new form soon. In the meantime each Thursday we put out a paper Big Enough to Squash an Island Horsefly but Light Enough to Swat an Island Skeeter. We’ll be at the seawall this weekend for the Island Moon ArtWalk. Stop by and say hello. We’ll see you Around The Island.

After a recent $4 million renovation the Port Royal pool, located just inside the Corpus Christi City Limits on SH 361, has added a child splash area, Royal Reef, a swim up bar, new cabanas, a heated lap pool, and rooms for banquets and meetings.

Around the turn of the last century Patrick Dunn built a headquarters house for the Dunn Ranch at the head of the Island. The location was just west of the Packery Channel Bridge where folks park and fish today and discarded plastic bags decorate the nearby dunes. The house was not a fancy structure, when originally Dunn House on The Island near Packery Channel built it was two story, with the house and added a separate bunk house on kitchen and dining area on the first floor and sleeping quarters above. It had the bay side. Patrick and family never used a three-sided porch running the full length this house as their residence, living in Corpus of the Gulf, Island and Packery side of the Christi, but did spend several months of the house. A pier extended from the porch into year there. the channel for boats bringing supplies and By sailboat or horse and wagon across passengers from Corpus. Pat being of the economical sort used what wood the beach provided for lumber to build the house and when asked why he built a two story he replied “not a single saw washed in with the lumber and I had no saw to cut it shorter”. As time went on he built a new kitchen and dining hall on the back of the

Mud Bridge

At that time getting to the Island was no easy matter. Coming by sail boat it was a fourteen mile trip across the bay and then six miles down Corpus Christi Pass. Depending on the wind and currents it could be a three hour trip History continued on A8

Loggerhead and Green Turtle Nesting Continues

Kemp’s Ridley Hatchling Releases Nearly Over By Donna J. Shaver, Ph.D. Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery National Park Service Padre Island National Seashore e-mail: Donna_Shaver@nps. gov The sea turtle nesting season continues this year, but not for the species that we typically report. The nesting season is over for Kemp’s ridley, the sea turtle species that nests more frequently than any other on the Texas coast. However, the nesting season continues for loggerhead and green turtles, which are having “a banner year” in our area.

We have nearly concluded our care of Kemp’s ridley eggs and public releases of Kemp’s ridley hatchlings at Padre Island National Seashore this year. We welcome the public to attend many of our releases of newborn Kemp’s ridley turtles. No fee is charged to watch the releases. We have released thousands of hatchlings at the National Seashore this year from eggs that have been found on the Texas coast. We have held 24 releases that have been open to the public and thousands of local residents and tourists have attended. We are thrilled and grateful for the wonderful turnout, support, and enthusiasm at the releases this year!

are given an educational program there starting at 6:30 am. After the program is completed, a ranger guides them on a short walk to the beach release site.

Still finding loggerhead and green turtle nests

Although the Kemp’s ridley nesting season is over, the nesting season for loggerhead and green turtles could continue for another month. So far this year, 14 loggerhead and 12 green turtle nests have been documented in Texas. Both of these tallies set new state records.

Twelve of the loggerhead and 12 of the green turtle nests were found at the National Seashore. Of the other two loggerhead nests, one was found on North Padre Island north of the National Seashore and one was found on South Padre Island. The other green turtle nest found outside the National Seashore was on South Padre Island.

Loggerhead and green turtles nest almost exclusively during the night. Most of their nests sites have been found by our staff and volunteers who discovered the tracks from the nesting females when they were releasing hatchlings at night, or during their early morning patrols.

Call for reservations at 361-949-2500 Located 15605 SPID on the Island

Visitors have discovered and reported a few of the nesting turtles. Please watch for these turtles while you are on the beach, and report any seen immediately by calling 1-866-TURTLE5. If you are driving on the beach at night, please drive carefully. Loggerhead and green turtles are large and slow when crawling on the beach. They are not capable of moving quickly to escape a passing vehicle. Please do not approach or take photos of them as they are crawling up the beach to nest or you could frighten them and cause them to return to the surf without nesting.

When hatchlings emerge from their eggshells and become physically ready for release we set them free on the beach and protect them until they enter the surf. Hatchlings must be released when they are physically ready and enter their “frenzy”. We announce our public releases on our recorded Hatchling Hotline (tel. 361-9497163) and on our Facebook page titled Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery. We instruct people to check the Hotline or our Facebook page one last time on the release morning before coming out to a scheduled public release because sometimes the turtles become active and must be released during the middle of the night or are not ready for release at the scheduled time.

Public releases are held starting at 6:45 am, on the beach in front of the Malaquite Beach Visitor Center at Padre Island National Seashore. The public is instructed to meet on the deck of the Visitor Center on the morning of the release, and

We typically do not schedule public releases for loggerhead or green hatchlings. It is difficult to predict when these hatchlings will enter their frenzy, and typically it occurs at night. However, occasionally hatchlings from these other two species frenzy when a Kemp’s ridley hatchling release is scheduled to occur and we release the hatchlings from the other species at a scheduled public hatchling release. We released a few loggerhead hatchlings at two of the public releases this year. It is too early to know whether any other species might be hatching at the same time as the last Kemp’s ridley clutch.

There is a remote chance that we will be able to schedule a public release for one of these other clutches this year since we have found so many compared to previous years. However, scheduling one would require multiple clutches to be hatching at one time so that we have “insurance” in case some of the turtles frenzy and must be released during the middle of the night that others are still available for the public release in the morning.

Stuff I Heard on the Island

Letters to Riley

There’s an elephant in the room folks and its name is Traffic. We Islanders have never been big on going OTB. Moon Mike used to define a good day as one in which he didn’t have to go OTB. Mr. Dick still holds the record at 436 days without going OTB he and only broke down and went to town when his friend was in the hospital.

Mr. Dick and friend. Mr. Dick still holds the OTB record. But these days going OTB on weekends is taking on a whole new meaning. It used to be a mere cultural displeasure; now it’s a real hassle. The weekend traffic on The Island in this summer season is worse than it has been in the twelve-plus years I’ve been on The Island. Increasingly one of the realities of Island life is that in the summer season we must think like commuters in our large cities; we time our travels around rush hour.

Maybe I can come to your school Diego since small human school is about to start again. I’m hoping my friends over at the Seashore school on The Island will start writing me letters and sending me some hotdogs in the mail. So far my humans have intercepted every single hotdog my friends have sent me but I think you kids at Seashore are smart enough to fool them. At least I’m hoping. I don’t know how many brother and sisters I have Diego. I’m a dog. We come in litters and don’t pay much attention to family structure. Send me a hotdog Diego. Did I mention I’m on a diet? I have two cat sisters but I only pay attention to them when they fight and I have to break them up or when another dog attacks them. Or when a giant owl flies out of the sky and tries to carry them off. Boy that was weird Diego when that giant bird came. He was almost as big as me but I’m not as big as I used to be

because now the cats don’t let me eat their food. Every time I sneak upstairs and start to eat from their bowl they rat me out to the humans.

Kids are invited to come see a presentation about Inky the Whale, Friday, August 16, at 1pm. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 7 member Lee Harrison of Flotilla 7-11, will show about the Marine Protected Species Outreach. It involves a display and 20 minute DVD on Inky the Whale. Inky was rescued suffering from ingesting plastics thrown in ocean. The whale was treated and had a happy release.

Courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department, it will be held in the Girl Scout hut, 739 W. Ave. A, next to the Parks and Recreation office. This free presentation will show how to help our friends in the ocean. Adults are welcome.

Island Fishing Workshop

Find out all about fishing in the surf at the next free fishing workshop. Meet expert Mike McClure, Grounds Supervisor for the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department, at Marker 25 on the beach. It will be held at

SPID or across Alister Street in Port A. Weekend routes around town now involve calculations about how long the wait for a left turn is.

Of those 12,000 cars about 8500 turn left at the Commodores/SH 361 intersection. A couple of telling facts: 1) in each of the past five years there has been a 25% increase in traffic in Port Aransas. That means there has been about a 100% increase in traffic in the past five years. 2) In the past ten years ferry crossings in Port Aransas have gone up barely 5% but the number of new water meters has increased by 40%. That tells us that there are a lot more people going to Port A and the majority of them don’t use the ferry; they come across the JFK. So as the population of Texas grows and subsequently the number visitors to The Island grows with it, the ferry lines will only get worse sending even more people across the JFK.

The static bottlenecks in this closed Island traffic circle are the limited number of ferries and ferry landings in Port Aransas and the two lanes of the JFK; neither will likely be expanded in any appreciable manner in the foreseeable future. The main variable is the increasing traffic load.

A recent count of southbound cars at 11 a.m. on a Sunday along SH 361, when the weekend visitors head home, found 450 cars in 15 minutes – about 4000 cars per hour.

What’s to be done?

So what can be done? The Port Aransas City Council has approved a project that will add lanes to SH 361 entering town from the south to

Ferry Count to Port Aransas

Stoopid cats. Am I chubyr than my family? Heck Diego, I’m chubry than everybody’s family including my own. I can’t figure out why though because my humans are trying to starve me. Did I mention I’m on a diet? Help me Diego. Send me some real food. My humans leave me at the office in the evenings because they say it’s too hot for me in the car so if you come to the office and give me a hotdog they won’t see you and I won’t tell. Help me Diego. The cats don’t go to the office so they can’t rat me out there.

Stoopid cats. Last week I got so hungry that when my humans caught me eating from the cat bowl and yelled at me I just kept right on eating until one of them grabbed me by the tail. The cats laughed but I waited until my humans left and gave them the business.

Stooped cats. Send me a hotdog Diego. Put it in Tupperware. Put it in a box. Drop it through the mail slot. I don’t care how you get it here.

Wow Diego that’s a lot of questions. Let’s start from the top. Am I big or small? Well, Diego I’m a lot smaller than I used to be. I used to be a happy 93 pounder but now I’m mostly a hungry 80 pounder. So to answer your second question, I’m not as fat as I used to be but I don’t think you would say I’m skinny – at least not yet. But if my humans continue to starve me I’m gonna be skinny soon enough. Dr. Christi says when I get to be skinny I can go back to my hotdog and catfood diet. Right now I’m on diet food and I think I’m getting drain bamage.

1pm, on Friday, Aug. 16. The hands-on tutelage will help understand how to better fish on the island.

Beach Walk Though there are five Fridays in this August, don’t make a mistake and miss this month’s free guided beach walk. It is always held the fourth Friday each month, but some automatically equate that to the last Friday. Meet under the purple flag near Horace Caldwell Pier at the end of Beach Street on Friday, Aug. 23. The talented, entertaining and informative guide Shirley Fischer will take the group on an up-to-2-hour stroll between the pier and the jetties. She will show off the finds from the beach over the years, her charts and books, as well as identify what you pick up during the walk.

Two traffic Islands become one And it’s also a fact of life that traffic problems at the Port A and at the Padre end get more and more intertwined everyday. A few weeks ago a wreck on the JFK Causeway backed up traffic not only on North Padre but even in Port Aransas as word quickly spread that the bridge was blocked. Ferry lines backed up all the way onto SH 361 south of town and crossing engendered a four hour wait. I hate to be the bringer of bad news folks but it ain’t going to get any better; at least not anytime soon. There is a plan to build a second bridge to The Island which would cross the Laguna Madre from the end of Yorktown Road to Sea Pines. But projects that big take lots of money and to get the kind of money it takes to build projects of that scale from the state have an arch of ten to fifteen years. There will be a lot of cars over the bridge before that happens.

By the numbers TxDot studies tell us that an average of 12,000 cars per day cross over the JFK Causeway. That is an average; which means during the slow winter months maybe only half that many make the trek while in the peak summer months the number is twice that. We Islanders tend to measure traffic in more empirical terms such as how long it takes us to make a left turn across

The guided walk is held each month courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department.

Assuming that sooner or later more lanes can be added to SH 361 the question then becomes what to do about the pinch points on the JFK and at the SH 361/SPID intersection. Schlitterbahn traffic, estimated at about 800 cars per day once the park opens, will be turning right there. Naysayers will put much of the blame for the coming traffic snarls on the park but the fact is that we have the snarls now and the park is not open. The bottom line here is that the increased traffic from the park is a trickle when viewed in light of the much bigger deluge we already have; more people are already coming to The Island than Island roads were ever designed to handle.

The Island Strategic Action Committee this week took the first step toward addressing the problem by establishing a task force to look for solutions. This will not be the type of task force that will publish a report and disband. As Gabi Hilpold, the ISAC Chair, said, “This is a five to ten year issue.” As of this writing the City of Corpus Christi is looking at a $55 million bond election for roads; none of which will be spent on The Island. History tells us that our city is a lot better at taking tax money from The Island than it is at spending any of it on Island roads. As I mentioned a few weeks back, we still have platted Island roads that already have sewer and water lines but no roadways and no indication from our city that they will be built anytime soon. Don’t look for any help there.

Port Aransas Mayor Keith McMullin has often advocated for more communication between Port A and Padre when it comes to traffic issues and that now seems more important than ever as increased traffic on both Islands has become a common and connected problem.

oPEN 7 dAYS + nOON-2AM

allow for turn lanes to the beach. That will help since beach traffic trying to make the beachward turn is a main culprit of jams at peak times. They are also turning 11th Street into a main north south thoroughfare to take some pressure off of the highway. But at the end of the day those are Band-Aids for a gushing artery. There is still only one road into and out of town. A few years ago TxDot floated the idea of adding two lanes on each side of SH 361 but their plan called for the new lanes to charge a toll. That didn’t fly.

The best we can reasonably hope for is to manage the problem for the next decade until new roads can be built. In the meantime I think more and more of us will follow Mr. Dick’s example when it comes to going OTB.

Moon Over Mongolia Sue and Ken Parsons recently returned from a 14 day journey from Beijing, China to Moscow, Russia on the Tsar’s Gold Private Train. Enroute they carried the Moon to the steps of the Parliament Building in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Seated behind them in the photo is a statue of Genghis Khan. In the 12th century he united the many nomadic tribes of northeast Asia to form the Mongol Empire which grew for a century under succeeding Khans to become the largest contiguous empire in history streching from the Pacific Ocean to the Black Sea and included most of what is now China, Russia and Siberia.

STATE

Island Moon

By Todd Hunter, District 32

The 83rd Texas Legislature succeeded in sending a little over fourteen hundred bills to the Governor. In addition to these bills House Concurrent Resolutions (HCR) and Senate Concurrent Resolutions (SCR) were also sent to the Governor for signature. Concurrent resolutions are important because they allow for the state to officially recognize people, places, and things throughout the State of Texas, make official statements for the state, as well as outline specific ideas and concepts to be studied by the Texas Legislature in between sessions. Here are some of those Concurrent resolutions which were signed by the Governor:

Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas Names Rep. Todd Hunter Open Government Lawmaker of the Year Rep. Todd Hunter, who has authored legislation to improve public access to government and protect First Amendment rights, is receiving the Open Government Lawmaker of the Year Award from the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas. Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, is chairman of the House Calendars Committee. He served in the House from 1989-97 and returned in 2009. He has long been an advocate for open government. Hunter will receive the award during the FOI Foundation’s annual conference Aug. 9 in Austin. During the 83rd Legislature this year, Hunter worked to modernize the Texas Public Information Act to reflect the widespread use of electronic devices. He also passed legislation that encourages retractions and corrections in defamation claims involving published or broadcast reports and passed legislation clarifying appeal protections for

whistleblowers, journalists and others who are subjected to lawsuits attempting to stifle free speech. “Since his return to the Legislature in 2009, Chairman Hunter’s dedication to open government has been unsurpassed in the House. He has strongly defended and expanded the free speech rights of Texas citizens through passage of seminal laws in this arena each of the last three sessions,” said Laura Prather, former president of the FOI Foundation and co-chair of its legislative committee.

The Island Strategic Action Committee (ISAC) this week voted to ask the Corpus City Council to help fund and operate a 25-foot boat to be used by CCPD to police boat traffic in Island canals. The ISAC plan calls for half of the $74,000 needed to purchase and outfit the boat to come from donations and half from the city. It would be staffed by existing uniformed officers. The committee indicated they may set up a 501-3C organization which could accept money from the city’s hotel/motel tax to fund the boat’s operation. The project must be approved by City Council.

Billings and Clems Boat Ramp Improvements. The city is moving forward to pave most of the parking area between the JFK Causeway and Packery Channel on the east side of the roadway. A total of $972,117 has been allocated for the job, which will pave only the areas on the north and south end of the now mud lot, with the area in between covered with gravel until the next phase of the project gets underway. A pre-construction conference was held this week and construction is expected to begin by the end of this year. .

best efforts of city crews. The cleaning of the line from the pump station to the Whitecap Wastewater Treatment Plant is complete – in some places it was 70 percent blocked by sand – and crews at the scene say some of the work to determine if the line is leaking has been done but is not complete. Crews say they have examined the line by running a camera through but still need to complete work on a sounding of the line which would determine how much wear and tear forty years of use have caused and whether it can be repaired or must be replaced.

In the meantime, when you drive down that stretch of Whitecap roll up your windows and hold your nose.

Installing of Whitecap Wastewater Treatment Plant UV Disinfection System

The Whitecap Wastewater Treatment Plant has been fined by state and federal regulators more than twenty times since 2009 for excessive discharge of Enterococcus bacteria into the canal system. To fix the problem a new Ultraviolet Light treatment system is needed. Current plans call for the city to proceed with design of three new UV treatment channels to be located within the footprint of the wastewater treatment plant. The new system will provide a treatment train to meet new TCEQ Enterococcus limits for wastewater discharge. No firm date has been set for construction.

Schlitterbahn Beach Country Resort

This $8.2 million project would construct a water exchange bridge under the Park Road 22/SPID roadway between Commodores and Whitecap. It is funded by city bond money and when completed would link Lake Padre on the east side of the road with the Island Canal system and Schlitterbahn Beach Country Resort development now under construction on the west side of the roadway. It would include 14 feet of clearance from the waterline to the bridge and include pedestrian and cart paths.

Work continues in earnest at the Schlitterbahn work site. Crews have finished the first portion of a concrete service road which begins near the existing tennis courts and works its way south. They are now in the process of damming up portions of the lakes located on the golf course so they can be dug deeper and eventually become part of the 3600-foot long Beachwalk canal which is expected to take about 90 days to dig.

Plans are moving forward and as of this writing a draft wetland mitigation plan required by the state has been completed and forwarded to the Texas Department of Transportion (TxDot) for approval.

Developer Paul Schexnailder told the Island Strategic Action Committee this week, “The ground work is almost done. In the next few weeks you will start to see buildings coming up out of the ground.”

The current schedule calls for the project to go out for construction bids in early December, 2013.

Work is also underway to transform the clubhouse at Padre Isles County Club into a two-story structure with a veranda on the south side and private dining area for club members. Schexnailder told the ISAC that the project is on schedule to be open June 1, 2014.

New Water Line to The Island The final design plans are complete for a second 24-inch waterline across the Laguna Madre to The Island. The second line would support the existing 24-inch line which is the sole source of water for The Island the primary source for the City of Port Aransas. Construction on the project is anticipated to start in December, 2013.

Port A’s Felder Art Gallery to Hold Exhibit in San Antonio

By Ronnie Narmour

Rob Felder, owner of the Felder Art Gallery in Port Aransas, has announced an exhibit to be held in San Antonio on December 5-15 featuring the work of renowned artist, John Cobb.

Cobb’s work includes the mural on the interior of the “Little Chapel on the Hill” in Port A. The art to be exhibited in San Antonio will feature Cobb’s “Chapel Paintings” and “Mission Series” and will be installed at the historic Clegg home, located on the campus of San Antonio Community College. The home, built in 1908, was designed by the famous architect Harvey Page and belonged to Felder’s great grandfather, Haltom Henning.. The library in Henning’s home had books that ranged from medieval times through 1803, which have been donated to Trinity University.

Study Bills and More

Over the past month or so I have been telling you about the new bills which have been signed in to law. As a reminder the office of the Governor determined the final outcome of certain bills which had managed to pass out of both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate during the Regular Session of the 83rd Texas Legislature. During the twenty days following the end of a regular session, the Governor of Texas has the ability to sign bills in to law, pass them in to law without a signature or to veto them. It is during these twenty days that members of the Texas House and Texas Senate find out if the bills they worked on during the session will become law or not.

Artist John Cobb in the Little Chapel on the Hill in Port A.

From surfer to artist

When asked why take this exhibit to San Antonio, Felder explained, “The religious paintings of John Cobb line up with the relics that I grew up around in my grandfathers home and it just seemed to make sense.” Felder first became aware of John Cobb through his work in the chapel in Port A, plus he was a surfer from Corpus Christi, a hobby which Felder also enjoys. Felder began to study and familiarize himself with Cobb’s artwork and became a fan. “When you stand in front of a John Cobb piece, there are layers of depth that go beyond the paint and brush strokes. You really start to feel something.” Felder added.

Cobb started his “Chapel Paintings” series in 1981. The paint used is a tempura and gold leaf which is made by grinding up minerals (pigment) and mixing in egg yokes. This is the same process used in biblical times when Eastern orthodox icons were written in gold leaf tempura. His “Chapel Paintings” are biblical parables set in contemporary Texas such as his rendition of the Virgin Mary on a burrow, as a young Hispanic girl with cowboy

boots. Another striking work in the series is called “The Baptism” and shows a modern day John the Baptist taking a group of young men to a Texas river, perhaps Hippie Hollow, to be baptized, some of them wearing cut off jeans and surf trunks. The “Mission Series” paintings encompass some 14 missions in Texas locations, such as the San Fernando Cathedral and the Alamo in San Antonio and the Mission Espiritu Santo in Goliad. Cobb’s work has been critiqued by Frederick Turner, an American poet and academic.

Bush Library The Valley House Gallery in Dallas will be acquiring one of Cobb’s “Mission Paintings” from this exhibit and donating it to the Bush Library in Dallas. This is Felder’s first show outside of Port Aransas and has prospects of becoming significant in Texas art. The Felder Gallery moved to Port Aransas from Rockport in 2009 and features much of the artwork of Rob’s father, Larry Felder who now lives in Costa Rica, as well as many local artists. It is located in the Tower Center on Highway 361. For more information and exact location of this exhibit, contact Rob Felder at robby@ feldergallery.com.

Letters to the editor

Moon Monkeys Editor,

Coming from someone that might be standing right beside the door on the out side. I walk out the door, looking down at my car keys to unlock the car. While doing so, the door shuts behind me, I’m outside walking to car, looking down at my car keys, then look up and what do I see ..... A man brutally attacking a woman, right on the other side of my car, you can see she is begging foe mercy, the other woman with him is telling him to stop and for them to go. I turn around to go back inside the building, I am all shaken up and trembling so bad that I can’t even think what my codes are for me to go inside to call police. So here I go squatting down, praying for all of us, praying he don’t see me, but the other girl did. He then gets in his truck, throws it into drive after girl escapes to get in her van, and he just floors it into her van. He throws it in reverse and then back into drive, floors it again into the rear of her van.

He speeds off down station, towards ave J, I am calling police, described all details. I said if you keep asking me questions, that I could not answer, like I did not know what went down or why, u may never catch him if you don’t get someone on it now. I called again just a little bit

later and told them that Park road had the video cameras. I went in and called that day and also other days and the owner said the police never called them to talk to them, and they told but we have the whole crime on video to show you. Still no show. The owner told that what he saw on video was so brutal that he also told them that and he told me that he just emailed them the footage for them to see what we were talking about just how bad and brutal it was. He too, as I, was in shock and in disbelief that Port A police had not got right on that. Was told, well, no Victim has called in. Really? I was a victim for 13 years of abuse. We don’t talk, we don’t call in because of how scared we are of the consequences that we may have to suffer for reporting our abuser, or because we don’t want our children to see their dad get arrested. Some strangers called in on my ex when they saw him get physical with me in public, cop came to talk to me ( this was when I lived in another city/town). I lied to cops and told them nothing happened. Back then, not many surveillance cameras. Today their is. Even with what I saw and it being on footage, brutal, nothing being done about it. Feeling upset and — feeling scared with Diane A.

Dog Park

Joey Farah Devorah Fox

One of the items being positively emphasized for this site is the fact that the park would be 100 feet from homeowners property. How many feet does a dog “bark” extend?

Mary Craft Maybeth Christiansen Jay Gardner

Dogs barking in neighborhoods is a pet peeve of mine....some people sleep during the day; others may be ill and needing quiet for recovery; others simply DO NOT wish to hear “barks”. I am a dog lover and I have a dog. So I am definitely not opposed to a Dog Park...BUT I do not wish to live next to the playful dogs exchanging their barking greetings.

Todd Hunter Danniece Bobeché Ronnie Narmour Brent Rourk Dr. Donna Shaver Photographers Miles Merwin

Owning a home in that area, as do several of my friends, should give those folks first option for approval/non approval....if even one objects, then select another site. This is being forced upon those home owners and many do not want it. I guess the kids I see playing basketball there will no longer be able to do so.

Island Driving Drivers, Wow!! Just went OTB to take my daughter to a friends house off Airline. I have been wanting to write this for a while and that trip just pushed me enough to do it. When you approach a stop sign/light there is a white stripe painted across the road. This is called a stop stripe. You are supposed to stop before the stripe. Not 2 wheels over and dang sure not all 4.When you turn right onto Whitecap from PR 22 you are supposed to turn into the right lane not the left. If you need to be in the left lane, after you turn, put on your turn indicator, (that is the lever on the left side of your steering wheel, push up for right, down for left. It’s there to tell other drivers your intent) then change lanes when it is safe to do so. When you turn left off of Whitecap onto PR 22, you should get out of the passing lane as soon as possible. I see some of you not get out of the passing lane until you get to your exit as far as Staples then wildly swing across three lanes to exit. You are supposed to wear seat belt in golf carts. I have never seen anyone wearing one and did not know it was law until last spring break when I saw it on the news. Buckle up those kids. Paul Slobojan

On the Rocks By Jay Gardner Sometimes in life we face adversity. I know, a brilliant statement and all, but adversity is the fuel that makes us overcome and succeed. I’ve witnessed a few cases of “discouragement” lately and it got me thinking.

fire got bigger from that conversation, and I immediately went to the Dean and began the process to appeal my suspension. At the hearing, I begged and pleaded and swayed the committee into letting me back in the next semester, still under probation. Needless to say, they could see it in my eyes and hear it in my voice I was serious. I didn’t let them down, and got an A and 3 B’s. I went on to move over to A&M and eventually finish my degree, and go on and to be a Teaching Assistant. I didn’t know it at the time, but I needed some “discouragement” to help me step it up and work hard to succeed.

out of reach. The lady explained that he was an inside dog that had escaped, and been out all day without food and water on the loose. The dog looked like he was about to come up on my porch, so I just gave him a little “HEY!” This made the dog stop, wondering if it was a good idea, and that gave the owner long enough to clip the leash on his collar. I gave the dog a little “discouragement”, and the lady led him home to bowls of food and water. The dog didn’t know it, but he needed a little “discouragement” to get what he was looking for. A few years back, I had returned from San Antonio and was half-heartedly attending Del Mar college taking some basics, and my attendance was a little slacking. I had come back into academic probation for a couple of D’s, and wasn’t really paying attention. I didn’t feel school was very challenging, so I figured I could just coast through the semester while working a restaurant job. After all, it was Del

Mar, right? How wrong I was. So I got the call after the Spring semester had ended from my Mother (sneaky Registrars sent that notice to my folks and not me!). She informed me that I had been expelled from Del Mar, and she wanted to know 1) why, and 2) what I planned on doing to start paying back loans and 3) get a jobby-job immediately. WAKE UP! Needless to say, at first, I was very discouraged, and doubtful about my continuing education, and future. I was listless for a bit. I’m not sure what happened, but a small fire got lit inside me, and I went in to talk to my English professor to see what I could do. She suggested I either suck it up and go find a job, or decide whether I wanted an education. The

In another case, I was talking with one of my buddies the other day who has been working in a job for a few years now, making “o.k.” money and struggling to support a new family. He had gone on an interview with a company, and appeared to have the job in the bag. The job, however, only paid a few thousand more than he was making, and he would have to spend time on the road working longer hours. He was discouraged about being away from his little girl, and in the end turned the job down. The job offer made him realize that his current job was flexible, was likely more fun than the new job would be, and would allow him to maintain time with the family. So being “discouraged” about new opportunity allowed him to step back, get some perspective, and realize that he could simply use the job offer to procure a small raise at his current job, still make ends meet, and spend that time with loved ones. So whether through someone else’s direct

interaction, a flat-out failure, or even through a new job offer we can become “discouraged” but that doesn’t mean the result has to be negative. It signifies that adversity can actually be a necessary means to success and enrichment in our lives.

Well loyal readers, the beach continues to elude me. Through the magic of scheduling, I won’t be able to do a long trip until sometime in October. It will just make it that much sweeter. At least we were able to make way offshore this past weekend, and I was able to hop in the water and snap a couple of photos. I think after work today I’ll load up my rod and a few lures and head out. I’ll see you On the Rocks.

Corpus Christi Animal Care Services, Rachel Ray Challenge Update According to the ASPCA website, the $100K Challenge is a national competition to inspire animal shelters—and those who support them—to go above and beyond to increase pet adoption, reunite lost pets with their families and save more animals’ lives. CCACS is proud of the community involvement and positive response to the Rachel Ray Challenge. With the dedicated help of PAAC volunteers, Animal Care Services has had approximately 440 adoptions since the kick off. The increase in the number of lives saved in June 2013 compared to the lives saved in June 2012 is approximately 271 dogs in cats. PAAC & CCACS host weekend adoptions each weekend. On Saturdays, please visit the shelter at 2626 Holly Rd. from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. On Sundays, please visit Petco, located at 6418 S. Staples St. from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

Animal Services performed a sweep on August 06, 2013 at 8:00am of Flour Bluff and the West Lakeside area. Officers made contact with many residents; nine (9) citations were issued and three (3) dogs were returned to the owner.

In 1915 a young Bishop school teacher, Buena Vista Hill was invited by one of the Dunn boys to come to the Island. Eager to escape the heat

Buena Hill Dunn in bathing suit of the coastal plains she joined the party and took the boat trip over from Corpus. For first timers like Buena the surprise tradition was to throw them into the channel off the end of the dock. Arriving at camp she was asked to check out the end of the pier to the suppressed grins and laughter of the boys about to give her the wet surprise. Running out to the end Buena quickly pulled off her dress, reveling a bathing suit underneath and jumped off the end of the pier. She merrily asked the now surprised group to join her as she had been forewarned of this prank a few days before. Impressed with this young lass’s humor Patrick’s son Burton Dunn began a romance that would last the next fifty-five years.

The Packery Channel house served two primary purposes, first a headquarters and jumping off place for working cattle and holding herds before crossing to the mainland, and then as today a getaway vacation spot for the extended Dunn clan and friends. In those preair condition times there was no better place in the Texas summer to be than the Island, almost always a cool breeze coming off the Gulf and a full porch to enjoy it in. With the addition of the bunk house, beds were plentiful and if they filled up the ranch hands would set up some of the big canvas tents that Pat often used working cattle down Island.

The Laguna before the days of the Intracoastal and Humble channels were two to three feet deep on the Bluff side and less than a foot deep for the last mile to the Island. The ford across the Laguna was a hard sand bottom marked by wooden stakes. Outside of the stakes were soft mud areas that could quickly bog a wagon or animal, turning an easy crossing into a nightmare. In the best case the cattle or horses would thrash their way out, if not then it required roping and pulling them to the hard sand with a team of mules or horses. Occasionally a panicky animal would die, exhausted, from the stress and sinking too far into that stinky blue mud to escape.

Backwater Adventures Farah’s Fishing Adventures

Techniques to catch late-summer fish We are having some great days on the water lately, fishing is very good. In past seasons times have been pretty tough late in the summer with water temps high and lots of people on the water. In all this has been a great year. One of the big factors in the past has been the amount of out of town fishing guides that travel to the Laguna Madre’ every day from Aransas Pass, Rockport, and some other areas lining up every 100yds catching as many fish as they can. This year we have not had too much traffic because of the stained water. Only now are they coming over, much of our trout stocks have had a break from the over harvest. Most of my success lately has come from concentrating my live bait fishing in shallow sand pockets with live croaker. I can’t stress the importance of low boat noise and making as little presence known in the flats as possible. Boats roaring back and forth and anchoring up with waves splashing on

Endless Summer

By Joey Farah

Thirty Years ago I would have known exactly how many days there were until the first day of school. We woke up every morning at sunrise hoping to fit in as much water filled adventures as we could before the sun set on our summer. We would spend the night cast netting shrimp all night and fishing under every light we could paddle our small boat or ride our bikes to. Come first light we were working soft plastics along the edge of the canal or sneaking out on our bikes to wade along the Laguna Shores shoreline. A few summers later our adventures spread out into the Lagoon and we would alternate drifting the flats, gathering scallops, and spearing flounder. We would pick someone’s house to cook our catches for lunch and cool down before we went back out for the evening bite. I can truly say that we camped on every island in the Laguna Madre’ with the exception of Pelican Island south of Bird Island, the smell of poop was too much. We would stay up all night and burn fires as we ran sail lines out into the darkness. We soon found that even though we were not old enough to drive we had a ride to the beach with the boats. We would stash them out in the undeveloped Padre’ Island canals and walk to Bob Hall. That’s when we learned to squeeze out every bit of fun in our Endless Summers. These endless days still flash before my eyes every day as I cruise the flats with my guests. I am still very much in love with this paradise, and love introducing everyone else to her bountiful beauty. Take a day and spend some time making an Endless Summer Day for your kids. Time is running out on their vacation and our time watching them be youthful.

lightly weighted hooks baited with live shrimp.

Go Get Um!

The Hamilton family HOOKED UP a good time on the water this week with this nice stringer of trout, some island exploration, dolphin watch, and Shell Island. the side of the boat will send trout and reds for deep water and keep them from feeding very quickly. The live Piggy Perch have worked best in areas of deeper water away from the grass. Live Piggy’s along the side of the Intracoastal Canal first thing in the morning is a dead ringer for success. I’m still rotating my techniques between naked hooks and leaders, Texas Rattler Weights, and using a small 1/16th ounce weight close to the hook. When the trout get finicky I will switch set-ups. Just notice how the fish behind your deck under the lights get smart on a certain lure until you make a switch, the fish in the shallow flats will get smart on what you are throwing out as well. Keep them guessing and your movements and noise level to a minimum. The Black Drum have come back this year to the Packery Channel. There have been some schools of drum staying in the channel just as they did for two full months in late summer years past. Look over as you are coming or going over the JFK and you will see lots of boats milling around in the “S” curve of the channel. They are sport fishermen and guides alike. Don’t forget that it is a boat channel, do not block traffic or hang out in the middle. This last weekend there were fishermen casting from the edge, boats along the side, and guides blocking the channel with lines cast out in every direction. Try to chum them up with some fresh live shrimp cut very small. These fish are suspending close to the surface during the day, they will be visible as slow moving groups of grey or white fish. A silent approach is a must and a precise cast with

The redfish are much more sensitive to vibration than the trout and catching them from a boat in the light morning breeze is close to impossible. The water displacement of the boat, your higher profile, and boat slap keep the reds just out of casting distance. Get out and wade fish and you will find right away that when you walk away from the boat the reds are quick to pounce on a large gold weed-less spoon, or Gulp under a Mauler Cork. The afternoon bite when the wind is up is on fire. Long casts and a stiff wind to move you across the flats are what anglers need to stay bent over double on all the big reds that are in the flats around the JFK area. This weekend is the last of the RUDY’S BARBECUE REDFISH SERIES, this tourney is being held over in Flour Bluff at Rodger’s Marina at the corner of Laguna Shores and Yorktown. There will be some of the best redfish anglers around, live bands and a lot of fun for anyone looking for something to get you pumped up about fishing. Saturday weigh in starts at 2pm.

The afternoon redfish bite is still on fire.

This weekend the options are limitless. With the light winds the Gulf will go flat and the bay will be like glass. Those were the mornings that we would just drive thinking that our skiffs were going faster than they were. We would run wild through the last few days of summer and burn that candle as hard as we could. Do the same, and get out on the water. If you need some push or help finding your own adventures give me a call anytime. Capt. Joey Farah on Facebook @ joeyfarah’s fishing. GO GET BIT!!

These two Austin gypsy fishermen were pulled out of the Back Porch and shanghaied onto my boat. They were forced into catching fish, getting some sun, and taking a few shots of fine tequila.
