Around The Island By Dale Rankin editor@islandmoon.com
Tropical Bill and the Storm blew through town this week on a two-day engagement. They only know two songs; Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head and Green Grass and High Tides. We Islanders spent the better part of Bill’s engagement answering phone calls. “Are you alright?” “Well, I think so. Do you know something I don’t know?”
Smoke on the Water and Fire in the Sky Controlled burn on spoil island will announce the approach of the Fourth of July fireworks show
“Well, the weather guy said you guys were hit by a hurricane.” “Oh, that. Well, we live at sea level whatever falls from the sky runs right into the ocean. Our flooding comes mostly from busted water pipes.” “But 60 mile an hour winds!?” “That’s a weak northern.” Nothing gets the weather wonks worked up like a tropical storm. Every time it rains in Edna they put The Island under Defcon 3. Such is life.
Skeeter Dance After months of standing water we are starting to see the mosquitoes cloud Island air. We have been wondering when the Skeeter Hoard would put in an appearance. With all the standing water it’s a wonder they haven’t been carrying off small Island dogs. We want to give a shout out to city crews who for the past few months have been dropping antimosquito pellets into Island storm drains. When it rains the drains fill up with standing water and become host to mosquito parties which usually fill the air with a cloud of mosquitos. The pellets have been very effective in keeping the mosquito population down and we Islanders love having to practice our Skeeter Dance. Anything that reduces the viscosity of the surface of standing water throws the mosquitoes off their reproductive game and the pellets have been a big help. One Islander suggested that wearing polyester is a good mosquito repellent because it’s like wearing a plastic bag and doesn’t give off a heat signature to attract the little buggers. That may or may not be true but hey, dude, you’re wearing polyester and sweating into your socks. Maybe it’s not the heat signature the skeeters don’t like, maybe they just don’t want to be around anyone wearing polyester. We’re just saying…
Snapper Season It has been said by folks wiser than us that anybody can mess things up, but if you want to create a hot mess you must involve Big Government. Never was that more true than when it comes to the rules for this year’s ten-day season for recreational fisherpersons to catch red snapper in federal waters. A few years ago the feds, in their infinite and desultory wisdom came up with some numbers that they believe are the optimal sustainable levels for red snapper in Gulf waters – nine miles or more offshore. Suffice it to say there is great disagreement between the feds and the states along the Gulf Coast. The federal season for private anglers in federal waters ended last week with the commercial season extended to July 15. In Texas waters – nine miles out or less – Texans can keep four snapper each and fish all summer. We won’t get into details on the size of keepers in state and federal waters, we’ll just say this; when it comes to rules for snapper in federal waters the feds are like a baby with a hammer. They flail about with arbitrary rules which don’t

If you see smoke on the water and fire in the sky on Thursday or Friday, June 25 or 26, don’t call the fire department because they will already be there.
Last year’s second annual Island Blast 4th of July Fireworks Show got a little extra boost in the “fire” department when the falling embers from the show set the spoil island across from the launch site on fire. The launch site at the end of Whitecap is just across the channel from the spoil island, which has now grown back lusher than ever, and to prevent that from happening again organizer Jerry Watkins in conjunction with Flour Bluff Fire Department Deputy Chief Fire J.P. Hominick and Zambelli Fireworks, which puts on the show, have made arrangements with city and state authorities to do a controlled burn at 6:30 a.m. on the Thursday or Friday before the show. The exact day will depend on weather conditions.

First Storm of 2015 Hurricane Season Glances Off The Island Tropical storm Bill blew across The Island this week bringing high tides which closed area beaches to vehicular traffic and giving surfers three days of unusually good waves. Bill made landfall dropped 12 inches of rain on some parts of the Upper Texas Coast sending waves crashing into the seawall in Galveston. Here on The Island water levels reached halfway up the Michael J. Ellis Seawall and pushed up over Island beach access roads and to the dune line from Port Aransas to the Padre Island National Seashore. The 60 mph winds which Bill packed up the coast never materialized in our area and the first rain bands of the storm, which were heavier in Port Aransas than on Padre Island, passed through the area before dawn on Wednesday and were gone by early afternoon.
On Packery Channel the highest water reached to within three feet of the top of the jetties and filled marsh flats around the island with tidal water. Winds from Bill were minimal.
The National Hurricane Center has predicted a light 2015 Hurricane Season due to the presence of the El Nino system in the Pacific Ocean.

Hurricane History Notable Storms That Hit the Gulf Coast in June and July Editor’s note: The arrival of Tropical Storm Bill this week the hurricane season is on the minds of Islanders. June storms in our area are rare but do happen. Here is a look back at June storms over the years.
Hurricane Audrey 1957 Audrey was first detected over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on June 24. It moved slowly northward as it became a tropical storm and a hurricane the next day. A faster northward motion brought the center to the coast near the TexasLouisiana border on the 27th. Rapid strengthening in the last six hours before landfall meant Audrey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane. The cyclone turned northeastward after landfall, becoming extratropical over northern Mississippi on June 28 and merging with another low over the Great Lakes the next day. The combined system was responsible for strong winds and heavy rains over portions of the eastern United States and Canada. No reliable wind or pressure measurements are available from Audrey’s core at landfall. The main impact was from 8 to 12 ft storm surges that penetrated as far inland as 25 miles over portions of lowlying southwestern Louisiana. These surges were responsible for the vast majority of the 390 deaths from Audrey. Damage in the United States was estimated at $150 million.

A Look Back at Hurricane Ike
Editor’s Note: This week’s near miss by Tropical Storm Bill reminds us that while a mild hurricane season is predicted for 2015, it is an active hurricane season if the only storm of the year hits your house. Before Hurricane Ike turned north and slammed into the Houston area it was headed straight for The Island and many of us ran for higher ground. It pushed tides over the top of the Michael J. Ellis Seawall and left a sand deposit between the Packery Channel Jetties that two subsequent dredgings failed to remove completely and which is still a factor in maintaining the channel depth. This look back was done by U.S. Army engineers with a focus on how a storm surge effects structures along the coast. The entire report can be found on the website Port Aransas resident Dr. Richard Watson. By Nicholas C. Kraus, Ph.D., and Lihwa Lin, Ph.D. U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory On Saturday, 13 September 2008, Hurricane Ike made an earlymorning landfall near Galveston, killing scores of people in Texas

The hurricane caused billions of dollars of damage to property, reduced the tax bases of several counties and cities, blocked federal navigation chan¬nels of national interest, and ultimately led to the loss of thousands of jobs. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reported that about 1.9 million people evacuated prior to Hur¬ricane Ike.

fire hydrant located in front of the pump station leaving her car in the median. The main break sent water over, and eventually under, the road causing a sinkhole which closed Whitecap while crews tried to stop the water flow then repair the street. The blow from the vehicle sheared the six-inch water line which was attached to the hydrant causing the line to flow water until late Sunday morning. Crews at the scene said they tried to stem the tide by shutting off the valve leading to the break which normally flows at 43 pounds per square inch but the valve was so old it only cut the flow to 38 psi leaving the hole full of water which overwhelmed the pumps put in place to keep the hole from overflowing. After several tries the men managed to reattach the hydrant and fix the road. No residents were without water; nearly residents did report “brown” water coming out of their faucets. Crews were able to isolate the leak because it was located between the Island’s main feeder lines which run along SPID and Aquarius to Whitecap. Here’s a hearty congratulations to the crews who jumped in on a weekend and had things back to what passes for normal around here by the Monday morning commute.

History continued from A1
September 2008, with 110-mph (177-km/hr) wind, accord¬ing to the Lake Charles Office, Louisiana, of the National Weather Service Ike was a major coastal disaster for the Upper Texas with influence extending from southwest Louisiana to South Padre Island. Hurricane Ike had unusually long surge duration with destruction and casualties belying its Category 2 classification by wind speed. A surge is a relatively slow rise in water level typically occurring over several hours for hurricanes, but which can persist for days for unusual storms, as is shown for Ike.
the 1900 hurricane during construction of the which provided protection from surge and waves, and improved storm drainage. However, the city area of Galveston Island slopes downward toward the bay and harbor. The bay side of Galveston was flooded by the evening of Friday, 12 September, with primary water intrusion believed to be from the bay side. Anecdotally, many residents who delayed evacuation were prevented from doing so by the forerun¬ner, likely believing that the eye of the storm and, therefore, greatest storm inten¬sity were still offshore.
In 2008, Ike was preceded by three other hurricanes on the Texas coast. Hurricane Dolly struck the lower Texas coast (Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley) on 23 July. Dolly
Almost all residences and buildings in the area are on pilings.
Up and down movement of heavy concrete slab by the surge current and waves scraped this large piling, rounding and weakening it from its orginal square shape. September 2008, was a devastating storm for the upper Texas coast, primarily because of the long dura¬tion of its surge. The surge caused pro¬longed flooding of structures and allowed waves to reach far inland. Beaches and wetlands from southwest Louisiana to South Padre Island were damaged. The venerable Galveston seawall pro¬tected the city from the sustained surge and waves. A forerunner surge and its flooding arrived much before the eye of the storm, increasing damage and hinder¬ing or preventing some evacuations.
Beach damage by storms
Much of downtown Galveston near the bay was flooded because of almost simultaneous rise of the bay in response to the surge in the Gulf of Mexico and the low land elevations there. The elevated area of Galveston located near the sea¬wall incurred much less damage. Several towns adjacent to the city of Galveston that were without dune or seawall protec¬tion were destroyed or severely damaged, and short- and long-term economic loss was great. Evacuation of residents and government responses to the storm were remarkably successful in reducing the loss of human life and in restoring critical functions of local and national significance. The amounts and kinds of damage by Hurricane Ike, consideration of surge and not mainly wind speed for evacuation, as well as the performance at all levels of government make Hurricane Ike a valuable example for stormdamage consequences and preparations that must be considered by all coastal cities.
Water level measured at several locations along the Texas coast during Hurricane Ike. The eye of the hurricane made landfall at 2 am on Saturday, 13 September, but the main surge was preceded by a large forerunner wave that arrived before midnight of Thursday, 11 September. Data plotted downloaded from http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ and includes preliminary or unverified values caused wind damage and flooding by precipitation and surge in the bay (Laguna Madre), but not significant erosion on the Gulf of Mexico shore on Padre Island as compared to that produced during the long duration of elevated water level of Ike. Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall northeast of Galveston at the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge on 2 August. Hurricane Gustav hit Cocodrie, on the southwest coast of Louisiana on 1 September, with great damage by wind and precipitation in the state capitol, Baton Rouge, and vi¬cinity.
Galveston Seawall Galveston, like North Padre Island, is protected by a seawall. Galveston is an active port city and a historic summer beach recreational destination. The year 2000 U.S. Census counted 57,247 residents in the city of Galveston and 250,158 residents in Galveston County. The city of Galveston is protected from storms in the Gulf of Mexico by a substantial 10-mile long seawall built in response to great loss of life and damage from the Category 4 September 1900 hurricane. In 1901, the City Commission of Galveston and the County Commission¬ers Court of Galveston appointed a board of three eminent engineers to develop a means for protecting the city. Galveston County con¬structed the originally specified 17,593-foot seawall by July 1904.

Structures on pilings fared well under the long duration of extreme water level, surge, and waves. However, the concrete slabs under the buildings closest to the beach were extensively undermined. Damage by ero¬sion was progressively less with distance landward from the beach. Buildings near the beach are inferred to have been damaged primarily by ero¬sion induced by surge and waves, which undermined the massive concrete slabs under them. Some slabs were moved energetically by waves and the flooding current from the sea to bay. A conclusion is that concrete slabs should not be placed under structures built on pilings that may be exposed to surge and waves. A gravel layer on top of filter cloth might be an appropriate and low-cost alternative. Older structures not on pilings were heavily damaged by the surge.

Hurricane Ike, which made landfall at Galveston on 13
Hurricane Ike surge A storm surge is a rise in water level above the predicted astronomical tide as associated with a tropical storm (includes hurricanes) or extratropical storm. Although a strong wind shear and low pressure (inverse barometer effect) are the common forcing mechanisms of storm surge, large storms in the Gulf of Mexico can induce basin or Gulf-wide oscillations that elevate the water level. Such an oscillation can result in a notable forerunner wave (surge contribution) ar¬riving to the coast before the major surge by wind and low atmospheric pressure, and the hurricane eye. Forerunner devel¬opment depends on the track, size of the hurricane or storm, and the location of hurricane landfall. Hurricane Ike occupied a substantial portion of the Gulf of Mexico, and its track and energy induced a large forerunner, as shown in the water levels. The surge was greatest at Sabine, located in right-front quadrant of the wind with respect to the eye that entered Texas at Galveston. The peak surge then decreased with distance south, although the duration remained much the same. The surge duration of a typical hurricane is less than a day, but the duration of Ike was approximately 2½ days. Such surge has profound con¬sequences for causing beach erosion and for promoting wave forces on structures high on the beach. Water level in Galveston Bay on the north side of Galveston Island measured at the Pier 21 gauge rose synchronously with that in the Gulf of Mexico measured at the Pleasure Pier gauge. The Gulf or south side of Galveston Island was raised following

Around the Island continued from A1 even make good nonsense and in the process randomly smash any common sense they come in contact with. There is some movement in the U.S. Senate to introduce some sanity into the system but the bureaucrats are resisting because, well, they are bureaucrats and that’s what bureaucrats do.
By Elizabeth Clark Summer is here and it’s on every teen’s mind! How will you look in your new swimsuit? Which of those seven beach bonfires will you attend? My name is Elizabeth (a freshman at Flour Bluff) and I’m here to give all the Padre Island Teen advice you can take.
The insanity started several years ago when someone in D.C. decided that offshore oil rigs were a menace to the fish population and ordered them removed. The removal process involves blowing up the legs of the rigs near the bottom which immediately kills all the fish the burecrats are trying to save and the habitat that has formed around them which attracts the fish. They destroy the village in order to save it. To the bureaucratic mind this somehow makes sense.
Summer is a time of salt and sand for the locals and no one appreciates the break more than hardworking students. We survived another school year and need to slow down and appreciate our freedom. It seems all anyone wants to do is grow up nowadays, but there’s not much to look forward to besides taxes, mortgages, and those pesky student loans. I can’t wait to get the Padre youth involved with The Moon. Let’s kick summer off with a bang!
Rig pics here So now our fisherpersons must travel eighteen miles out of Packery Channel to the Liberty Reef in 100 feet of federal water or go more than thirty miles out to find rigs in 200 feet of water that hold large amounts of snapper. Closer to shore the new Nearshore Reef managed by the local group Saltwater Fisheries Enhancement Association, S.E.A, is in 73 feet of state water where the snapper population is starting to take hold.
If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please email me at PadreIslandTeen@gmail. com.

S.E.A. has been trying to talk sense to federal regulators for years but so far the bureaucrats aren’t listening. In the absence of nearshore rigs some local anglers follow the undersea pipelines which hold fish and they report that offshore structures are full of red snapper and lionfish, which are about the only thing the snapper won’t eat. The feds have retaliated to Texas’ intransigence to their wishes by imposing strict limits in federal waters off our coast. Only in the bureaucratic mind does it make any sense to

funded by fees charged to users. The board is appointed by city and county authorities and board members are termed out after twelve years. In 2011 the four largest businesses in the port accounted for 56% of total port business, by 2014 that percentage dropped to 35% due to new growth. Currently $35 billion in new investment is either under development or under contract with another $5 billion on the way. The investment being made by the Chinese pipeline company Tianjin (TPCO) at over $1 billion represents the largest single Chinese investment in the country. The completion of the I69 corridor through Nueces County is crucial to the port because without it truck traffic out of Laredo bypasses Corpus Christi for the Port of Houston. An effort is underway to dredge the port from the current 45 feet to 52 feet to handle ships coming through the new Panama Canal. The new Harbor Bridge will increase ship clearance from the current 138 feet to 205 and the bridge will be the longest concrete span bridge in the United States. (It was interesting to note that the current Harbor Bridge which has three lanes each way accommodates 50,000 vehicles per day and a new $1 billion bridge is being built, while on The Island the JFK Causeway accommodates 26,000 vehicles per day with only two lanes but rather than build a new bridge a traffic light is being placed on one end of it).
have different snapper limits from state to state but that is what we have; a baby with a hammer. Maybe the Senators can talk some sense to their employees in D.C. All we can say is thank you Sam Houston for insisting on making the nine-mile state water line a condition of our statehood; at least we have a nine-mile barrier from the baby and his hammer.
Egg shortage The avian influenza outbreak which several states are currently fighting has not made its way to Texas but the egg shortage it has caused has.
The Chairwoman of the Port of Corpus Christi, Judy Hawley, came to The Island last week to speak to the Padre Island Business Association. Here are a few highlights: The port has 36 miles of ship channel which handled 100 million tons of cargo last year making it the fifth largest port in the United States. After years of being a port of import the port now is a port of export due to the development of the Eagle Ford Shale which is the second largest shale play in the country.
After more than two decades without new barge docks at the port six new barge docks are under construction to reduce wait time for inbound barges which now can be up to two weeks. That’s all for now so say hello if you see us Around The Island.
Ann Weber, Herald Meyer, and Island Moon founder Mike Ellis after a couple of particularly brutal La Posada Lighted Boat Parades when temperatures forced Islanders to dig in their closets for their fur-lined flip flops. Over the years the boat parade and fireworks show have made the event, along with the La Posada Lighted Boat Parade in December, the two most anticipated events of the Island calendar.
Where to watch The parade route is on the main canal, beginning near the Padre Island Yacht Club where the muster of boats begins around 6 p.m. and the parade kicks off at 7 p.m. Judging of boats will be at the three-house party of Ann, Herald and neighbors at 13758 and 13764 Three Fathoms Bank, where parade judges will be located. The public is welcome to attend. Boats can anchor up in the Main Canal or around the Padre Island Yacht Club. Boat access will be limited within 500 feet of the launch site. A clear path will be maintained to allow boat traffic in and out of the canal but boaters can beach up across the channel from the club. See the attached map for details. Watkins is still accepting donations for the show, which costs $15,000 for the fireworks and additional monies for incidentals. All of the donated money goes directly to pay for the show with no overhead or management fees taken out. The donations are tax deductible. In the meantime, look at the smoke on the water and fire in the sky on Thursday/Friday as a reminder that it’s time to put the bunting on the boat and get ready for the Mother of All Deck Parties!

Texas 200 Passes Through Coastal Bend
Island Moon
A7
On the Rocks By Jay Gardner & Aaron Baxter
Each year a group of intrepid boat captains set out from Port Isabel and for five to six days travels 200 miles up the Laguna Madre in homemade boats in a test of endurance and ingenuity.
Well, as I sit here typing this, the remnants of TS Bill are dumping the last of its fury on the coastal bend. I managed to not pick up a generator and be prepared for the worst as the storm honed in on us. Actually, instead of preparing, we dumped the skiff in the water and headed south to the cabin for the weekend. The exact opposite of what I should have done. Then again, whoever said I was a responsible adult anyway? That person must not know us very well.
They passed across the back of our Island last week and Islander Nick Colisi was on hand and took these photos.
The cabin was fun, and we even managed a late trip back to the dock to pick up Baxter, Tyler, and even Emma called in sick for the next day (cough!) and made an appearance. The fishing was fun off the dock at night, and everyone at least caught a few here and there. Most of the fish were well below the 15” minimum, with only a few keepers mixed in. But it’s always a great time at the cabin! Augs even got out his drone and took some aerials of the island. Awesome stuff! It’s crazy to think that the FAA is trying to implement rules that operators of these quad-copters are going to have to have an actual pilot’s license to legally operate them. More unnecessary red tape thanks to the federal
water in the bays! If you tried to go down to the beach, you know what I mean, as it was all the way to the dunes. The beaches up north (around Sargent and points north) really got walloped, and they lost some serious territory. As you loyal readers know, coastal erosion is a much bigger deal up north, and they will have some issues after TS Bill finally clears out of here. Hopefully not all of the CEPRA money will go up the coast again. We always have a hard time competing around here for those funds. Anyhoo, once the tides go down this weekend, it should be a beach-combers paradise out there. The heavy surf kicks up shells and other trinkets and deposits them on the beach where they can be easily found. Early bird gets the worm folks! I wish I could take a day off and head down the National Seashore when it opens again (it’s still closed until further notice, but I’m betting they’ll be open by Friday). Who knows what may be found after a storm! Sometimes some very interesting things are uncovered. Maybe a doubloon or two?! THAT would be cool. The high water also flattens the beach and makes driving excellent. It will be 2WD for a few weeks at least, and should still be decent for the July 4th weekend, which should be larger than normal due to the split vacations.
Speaking of birds, Bizzy called me this morning and told me about the flock of frigate birds hanging around the causeway on the way in to work this morning. Cody and Central Scrutinizer also made note of the amount of frigates around. It always happens when there’s a storm in the gulf; they head in closer to land. I’m wondering if other pelagic birds such as brown noddy’s or jaegers came in with the weather. If Jacob's drone shot of Twin Palms you saw one of these specialty birds, or got government! Jacob even mentioned that they some photos, shoot me an email at jaygardner@ are considering requiring having a trained scientist.com and let’s see them. medic with the pilot while flying a quad copter. In addition, the fishing should be awesome I mean, how crazy can they get?! But, for the sake of his business, Jacob is starting his pilot’s once conditions get back to normal. The high license. Good luck buddy! And Thanks for tides scatter the fish, and the weather and hosting at the cabin Mike Henry and Charlie clouds keep them from feeding as much as they Mader! Good times and can’t wait to get down normally would. They will be hungry when the clouds break. Hopefully work and chores will there again. let me go play at some point. Say hi if you see The highest tides I saw on the TCOON site at me out there On the Rocks giving those tarpon Packery were +2.2 feet, which is a BUNCH of a shot.

SPORTS Sports Talk
By Dotson Lewis
Retired Numbers
Two Sports Super-Stars Who Are Making Waves
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon
Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s Note: Here you are again, two articles for the price of one. There are many items of interest going on in the wide, wide world of sports.
either tied the game or given the Yankees the lead. He's hitting them when they count. That matters quite a bit, because we weren't sure he'd hit any at all.
Back in the 70’s when Alex Rodriquez was playing for Seattle, I had the opportunity to watch him play shortstop in many games against the Texas Rangers; and I watched him perform in many more games after being traded to the Rangers. At that time I was convinced that he was the best defensive shortstop and the best hitting shortstop that I had ever seen play. (I had the privilege of watching some of the greats including Marty Marion, Lou Boudreau, Pee Wee Reese, Phil Rizzuto; and if I were to choose just the best fielding shortstop of all time, it would be Marty (Slats) Marion.)
Saturday's blast temporarily tied New York's game in Baltimore in the top half of the sixth. The Orioles turned right around and scored three in the bottom half and two more in the seventh to win 9-4. The Yankees look to avoid a 3-game weekend sweep in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. If A-Rod can inch a little closer to 3,000 hits, that will set up an interesting scenario. On Monday, the Yankees will begin a 4-game split series with the Miami Marlins, with the first 2 games being played in Miami, A-Rod's home town.
In the days of old, uniform numbers were usually retired by sports teams if one of their more prominent players was dying prematurely or had their career cut short by some tragedy. Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees comes to mind. “Babe” Ruth’s #3 was not retired until June 13, 1948, 14 years after he quit playing for the Yankees. Ruth was dying and could hardly stand during the ceremony. In fact, several players by the names of Cliff Mapes, George Selkirk, Allie Clark and Roy “Stormy”
As it's a National League park, A-Rod may just ride the bench and serve as a pinch hitter, but it's at least plausible that's where the milestone will happen. Otherwise, it should definitely happen on the Yankees 8-game home stand that follows.
Hope Solo's Husband Comes To Her Defense: 'It Is A Witch Hunt'
A-Rod Sitting Out His One Year Suspension-The 2014 Season
Hope Solo hasn't spoken much to the media since the World Cup has been underway, but her husband, former NFL player Jerramy Stevens, did some talking for her in an interview Saturday with USA Today Sports. "It is a witch hunt, you can put that in the paper," Stevens said of the ongoing domestic violence controversy
And although I usually don’t pay much attention to soccer, the story of Hope Solo is very intriguing. In spite of all of the head line generating hullabaloo about “Domestic Violence,” in studying her history, I find it difficult to put her in the same category with spousal and child abusers. You be the judge.
File This Under Things That Are Only Possible With Alex Rodriguez On Saturday night in Baltimore, the New York Yankees designated hitter became only the second player on record to reach 2,000 career RBIs, and he did so by connecting for career home run No. 666. Talk about a series of numbers and set of circumstances that are strange. Clearly, this has to be confirmation that A-Rod sold his soul to the devil somewhere along the line. Well, that, or it's simply one of the more interesting, frightening and oh-so-fitting coincidences we've seen in a game that's never short on such things.
surrounding the U.S. women's goalkeeper. Stevens spoke to USA Today-Sports at Winnipeg's International Airport, where he was about to board a plane to Vancouver for the United States' final World Cup group match on Tuesday. "It's not hard for me because I know Hope can handle it," Stevens said. "I think that what's hard is that she's the victim of something that was really scary and a really unfortunate incident. [She] being classified even remotely close to Ray Rice and these other domestic violence incidents is ridiculous and outright wrong."
The smallest Yankee number to yet be retired is the #11 which is now being worn by Brett Gardner. The #11 was also worn by “Lefty” Gomez, #12 by Ron Blomberg (first MLB DH), #13 by Jose Vizcaino and currently Alex Rodriquez. The #14 was worn by Bobby Cox and Lou Piniella. Number 17 was worn by Mickey Rivers, #18 by Don Larsen, #19 by Aaron Boone and #21 by Dion Sanders. Are you beginning to get the idea? Number 24 was worn by Tino Martinez, #25 by Jason Giambi and #26 by Darryl Strawberry. Mike Stanton wore # 29, Willie Randolph #30, Dave Winfield #31 and David Wells #33. If that’s not enough, imagine #34 Tony Kubek, #35 Phil Niekro, and #36 David Cone. Ok, I’ve made my point. As of this writing there are a total of 174 retired numbers in all of Major League Baseball, including the #42 of Jackie Robinson that has been retired by all 30 teams. It wasn’t until 1944, when the New York Giants’ baseball team retired Carl Hubbell’s #11 as the first true nontragedy uniform number retired. Now retiring numbers is being used as a marketing tool. And it’s hard to believe that in 1960 only eight numbers had been retired in all of baseball. There were only five numbers retired in the NFL and none in the NBA.
Bernie Williams' number 51 was retired recently Hope & Jerramy
could conceivably retire numbers all the way up to the #43 or so.
Weatherly to name a few, wore the #3 before the Yankees decided to retire this number. With Bernie Williams #51 being retired recently and Jorge Posada (#20) and Derek Jeter (#2) up next, the question becomes, when will the Yankees run out of numbers? They currently have 19 retired numbers and a case can be made that the Yankees have had so many great players and so much success that they

Earlier in the week, reports surfaced that Solo was combative with officers after her arrest last year on accusations that she assaulted her half-sister and her teenage nephew, an incident during which authorities described Solo as the "primary aggressor.'' Solo initially faced two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence in the altercation at her half-sister's house last June, although those charges were dismissed on procedural grounds earlier this year. Solo pleaded not guilty and portrayed herself as a victim in interviews after the dismissal of the case.
A-Rod with Ex-wife & Daughters The timing could not have been scripted or planned any better, given most of the public's general view of A-Rod, and the reactions to this milestone are sure to be glorious. The only thing that could have topped it would be A-Rod lining up his 3,000th career hit for the ultimate trifecta. As it is, he's sitting on 2,995 hits, meaning that milestone should fall in the next week. The home run itself was a 2-run shot off Orioles starter Bud Norris, which actually gives Rodriguez 2,001 RBIs for his career. Hank Aaron is the only other player on record with at least 2,000 RBIs; he remains comfortably ahead of the pack with 2,297. Major League Baseball's official statistician is the Elias Sports Bureau. They only started keeping track of RBIs as a statistic in 1920; otherwise Babe Ruth (2,214) and Cap Anson (2,075) would also officially be in the 2,000 club, though you're free to count them if you like. Here's another thing we must acknowledge about A-Rod: 7 of his 12 HR this year have

"Outside the Lines," citing police records, two sworn depositions and interviews with one of Solo's accusers, reported Solo had been drinking when she arrived at the home of her half-sister, Teresa Obert, and was the aggressor in the altercation, including slamming the teenager's head into the floor. OTL also reported Solo was so combative after her arrest that she had to be forced to the ground by police and that she insulted officers. Solo said she was "perfectly focused" after the U.S. beat Australia in the team's opener last Monday, but otherwise has not publicly commented on the report, which Stevens referred to as "low class" and "nothing less than unpatriotic." "She doesn't need to defend herself," Stevens told USA Today Sports. "She's in the right. I think that gives her strength because she doesn't feel like she's done anything wrong and it's just unfortunate because they've made an issue out of something and there was no new information presented. None whatsoever. All of those [details] were available.” "[People] put females in a box and want them to stay there and look pretty. Hope refuses to be put in that box. She wants to be treated as an equal. That's not the case as we can see." U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati Friday said that it viewed the case as "he said, she said" and was waiting for the resolution of the criminal charges against Solo before issuing any discipline. Although the charges were dismissed in January, the prosecutor is appealing. In January, Solo was suspended 30 days by U.S. Soccer after Stevens was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence while operating a team vehicle. Solo was a passenger in the vehicle. Stevens and Solo have been married since November 2012. They got married a day after Stevens was arrested for fourth-degree domestic violence assault stemming from an altercation with Solo. He was not charged. Dotson’s Other Note: My thanks to writer Mark Fainaru-Wada for many of the facts contained in the ‘Hope Solo’ article. For all Moon Monkeys, who are sports gurus, disregarding all of A-Rod’s alleged transgressions, where does he rank on your list of all-time best shortstops? And in the matter of Hope Solo, should she be punished by U.S. Soccer and FIFA for her alleged misbehavior?
