Tough Act to Follow
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon This is not as much about baseball as it is about his life. What a great example of a man’s man. I once wrote that for some, the pitcher’s mound is the loneliest place in the ballpark, but that was before I discovered Mariano Rivera.
“I’m going to miss the competition; being on that mound,” said Rivera. What is it about this man that made his opponents plan on how to celebrate his leaving? All the adjectives have been used these past several weeks as Rivera winds down a 19-year Hall-ofFame career in Major League baseball: Dignified, spiritual, respect, caring, revered class act, signified excellence, and competitor, quiet, resolved, and human. His make-up made him special. We draw strength from people like Rivera. He was able to be emotional, yet remain the very definition of a man. As a closer, he was called in during the storm and calmed everything down. “I get more than I give,” said Rivera.
him and began to cry. It would be the last time he would ever pitch at Yankee Stadium. Then he hugged Jeter and more tears flowed. It may have been Mo’s toughest out. Mo later said, “Thank God they came out. I needed them there.”
Handful of dirt Somewhat lost in the night was his teammate Andy Pettitte, who had also announced his retirement. The Yankee fans honored Pettitte by calling him out for a well deserved curtain call. After the game, Mo made his way out to the mound, a place where he had spent a lot of time. He then bent over and gathered some dirt in his right hand. Of all the gifts Mo received this year, that handful of dirt may have been the best. The New York Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-0. Baseball lost Andy Pettitte and Mo Rivera. Don’t make us wait five years to see Rivera in Cooperstown. Remove the five-year waiting period. I want to be around when he is inducted. Mo has pitched in 96 post season games with only one loss. The inclination to rank him with all other pitchers, including starters, is strong; but the fact remains, he was a closer, “THE CLOSER,” the best that ever was.
“I don’t hear the music, but I do hear the crowd. I’m thinking of how many outs I need to get,” said Rivera. “To me, entering a game is my opportunity to give back.” His eyes would calm you down. His voice was reassuring. His presence in the clubhouse spoke volumes without his having to say a word. Bob Melvin once said, “No pitcher has the impact on the opposing team like ‘Mo’ when he starts warming up in the bullpen. It’s not the ‘cutter,’ it’s the way he stays away from the hitter’s power. Mo is simply smarter than most other pitchers.” During the post game comments, Yankee Manager Joe Girardi said, “He made my job fun, he made my job easier; but more importantly than that, he made all our lives better. I will miss him.”
Legendary announcer Vince Scully may have said it best. “God bless you and Clara and the three boys. Don’t be a stranger to baseball.”
It will be written on the night of September 27, 2013; Mariano Rivera pitched for the last time at Yankee Stadium. I’m not going to bore you with the numbers. In the middle of the ninth inning, teammates and childhood friends, Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte, were sent in by Joe Girardi to take Mo out for the last time. As they approached Rivera, Jeter said to Mo, “Hey, it’s time to go.” Pettitte signaled to the pen for a right-hander. Mo realizing now what was happening handed Pettitte the ball, hugged
I’ve been blessed to have seen some of the greats compete. The names ring down for me like thunder from the heavens: Ali, Mantle, Koufax, Mays, Unitas, “Sweetness,” “Wilt,” Jordan, Staubach, and Snider. What a gift he has been to all of us as an example of a fine, decent human being. Mo will be a tough act to follow. To me, it was the perfect game. Andy Purvis is a local author. I enjoy your writing in the Moon Is there still a 1 yard neutral zone at the line of scrimmage? If so, why is it not enforced? Is there still a rule against face guarding receivers? If so, why is it not enforced?
The NFHS Football Rules do have what they refer to as “an expanded neutral zone.” I met annually with the NFHS football rules committee when I was the NCAA representative to the NFHS, and I remember it being discussed from time to time.
Thank you in advance for your reply. Clayton Hubbard Clayton,
By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com Dotson’s Note: With thunderstorms again forecast in our area this weekend, we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. If you are going to a high school game this Friday, suggest you carry a poncho and park your car as close to your stadium seats as possible. Ponchos are much drier and much easier to handle in wind driven rain than umbrellas. (Umbrellas block others’ view, and can be dangerous; metal ones have even been struck by lightning) We had a very interesting night of football Friday evening, September 29th due to the many thunderstorms in the area. I have received many questions as to how the officials handle this kind of situation at a high school game. Of the 19 games scheduled by our area teams, 4 were played to completion, 15 were postponed, suspended and/or declared “No Contest.” The referee is the final authority as to if and when the game will be suspended, for how long, and if the game will or will not be played later that same day. Of course, the referee discusses the matter with the coaches and school administrators before making his decisions. Here’s an excerpt from the NCAA Football Rules Book and our instructions to the Referees: The following specific lightning safety guidelines have been developed with the
1. The neutral zone is as wide as the football is long (10 7/8” to 11 7/16”). 2. In College and Texas High School football, “Face Guarding” has never been a foul. It is a foul by National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) football playing rules. NFHS Football PLaying Rules are used in all states except Texas and Massachusetts.

assistance of lightning safety experts. Design your lightning safety plan to consider local safety needs, weather patterns and thunderstorm types. a. As a minimum, lightning safety experts strongly recommend that by the time the monitor observes 30 seconds between seeing the lightning flash and hearing its associated thunder, all individuals should have left the athletics site and reached a safer structure or location.
b. Please note that thunder may be hard to hear if there is an athletic event going on, particularly in stadiums with large crowds. Implement your lightning safety plan accordingly. After a game is suspended, it will be suspended for no less than 30 minutes and after that play shall not be resumed until there is no sound of thunder. If lightning detectors are available they will be used to assist the Referee in making his determinations.
Referees’ Note: If you suspend your game and it is not resumed that day, you are to file an incident report with the Corpus Christi Football Chapter, the Texas Association of Sports Officials and the University Interscholastic League. The incident report form is available on the websites of the associations listed above. We wish for you to have a lightning free game.

Our rules, Texas High School/NCAA: “The neutral zone is the space between the two lines of scrimmage extended to the sideline and is the length of the ball. The neutral is established when the ball is ready for play and is resting on the ground with its long axis at right angles to the scrimmage line and parallel to the sidelines. The neutral zone exists until there is a change of team possession, until a scrimmage kick crosses the neutral zone or until the ball is declared dead.”

It has been said that the true measure of a man is how he acts when things don’t go his way. The great ones don’t quit, don’t take a step back, but go forward. Rivera understood the history of the game and the uniform he wore. He was always at his best in life’s biggest moments. His single-minded focus on the job at hand was incredible.

October is Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and that means it’s time to pay tribute to all things canine and get more homeless pups into forever homes. To get the party started, CCACS has reduced dog adoption fees for the entire month of October to $10. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip and city registration. The observation of Adopt-a-ShelterDog Month brings attention to the plight of homeless animals in every community and the unfortunate fact that only 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescue groups. There are 3 to 4 million dogs living in shelters nationwide who dream of being a valued addition to someone’s family, all they need is a second chance. CCACS encourages the community to adopt a pet or sponsor the adoption fees of a homeless animal. When you sponsor a pet, we will place a card on the animal’s kennel with the sponsor’s name on it. For additional information contact Corpus Christi Animal Care Services at 361-8264602.
City Responds to Recent Mosquito Outbreak Due to the recent heavy rains, City of Corpus Christi Vector Control personnel are being inundated with requests from throughout the city for pest mosquito adulticide spraying. Vector employees are responsible for a number of other key tasks besides mosquito spraying: from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM they are responsible for pesticide treatment of all city buildings, collecting and processing mosquitoes from the various traps throughout the city, and swarming bee eradication. Vector Control can only spray for mosquitoes when it is not raining and the wind speed is low. The pesticide dissipates quickly when it comes in contact with the ground, especially if there is any dew. Even then, the fogger only kills the mosquitoes that are airborne at the time of the spraying, so it is not effective for any great period of time. Since the fog only kills the airborne mosquitoes, spraying only occurs during evening hours, usually between 7:00 PM and Midnight. It is estimated that the fog only kills one third of the total mosquito population. The three Vector employees have been working 12 to 14 hour days seven days a week for over the past two weeks to try to keep up with this demand. The areas of the city to be sprayed are determined by the number of mosquitoes found in any of eight traps spread throughout the city. Vector Control Officers will spray the routes surrounding any trap that exceeds 50 mosquitoes. The routes to be sprayed are determined by the number of mosquitoes caught in traps, not by the number of complaints coming into the city call center. Currently all traps in the city are exceeding the 50 mosquito threshold, so Vector Officers are conducting a patterned approach to spraying across the entire city. The routes to be sprayed are posted on the City Website daily under the Health Department Vector Control page: http://archive.cctexas.com/Health/ MosquitoSchedule/MosquitoSchedSearch. cfm Vector Control is asking for the public’s patience as they work to reduce the recent increase in pest mosquitoes. As always, citizens are encouraged to take the following precautions to avoid being bitten: • Use an approved insect repellent every time you go outside and follow the instructions on the label. Approved repellents are those that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Wreck on the JFK Monday, September 30 2:24 a.m. 11905 South Padre Island Drive Corpus Christi Police are investigating a single vehicle crash at the 11900 block of South Padre Island Drive that happened Monday morning. Corpus Christi Police responded to the crash at 2:24am and found a black 2012 Ford Mustang operated by a 20-year-old man had struck the concrete divider between the eastbound and westbound lanes. The Mustang spun and came to rest in the center of the eastbound lanes. The 20-yearold man did wear his seatbelt and was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment for non life-threatening injuries. No other person was in the vehicle and no other injuries were reported. Corpus Christi Police initiated an investigation for Driving While Intoxicated because of evidence that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. The 20-year-old man was not arrested. Changes In Police Response Went Into Effect October 1 The Corpus Christi Police Department begins the alternative response to minor vehicle crashes, barking dogs, and unruly children calls for service on October 1, 2013. Corpus Christi Police will have an alternate response to vehicle crashes in which there is no injury that requires ambulance transport and were involved vehicles can be driven away from the scene. Officers will respond to the accident to determine severity of the crash. Drivers will be responsible to complete and submit a Texas Department of Transportation Form CR2 (Official State Form). The form can be accessed online at http://www.txdot. gov/driver/laws/crash-reports.html. Citations will be written for regulatory violations, such as, no driver’s license, expired registration, expired inspection. The Corpus Christi Police encourages discussion among neighbors about problems with barking dogs. Talk to your neighbors about the problem. If that doesn’t work then document the incident, video tape it, speak to your neighbors about assisting you in making the complaints. Anyone can fill out a “Nuisance Complaint” form found on the City website http://www.cctexas.com/ government/city-attorney/prosecutors-office/ forms/index. The City Prosecutor’s Office will send out a letter of notice to explain the nuisance on the first offense. A person who would like to file criminal charges for a second offense must make a formal complaint at the City Prosecutor’s Office. Corpus Christi Police Officers will no longer respond to calls for “unruly children.” Parents should call their respective schools’ attendance officers to respond to children who refuse to attend school. For more information please contact CCISD 361-695-7242, Tuloso Midway 361-241-3554, Calallen 361-2425626, Flour Bluff 361-694-9100, West Oso 361-806-5960. These changes took effect Tuesday, October 1, 2013. The Corpus Christi Police Department will no longer respond to unpermitted alarms after November 1, 2013. Those with an alarm permit there will be no change. There is a 30 day grace period to allow everyone to obtain an alarm permit. Officers will not respond to any alarm notification from an alarm site that does not have a valid permit after November 1, unless the alarm notification was a duress alarm, a hold-up alarm, a panic alarm, or reported to a 9-1-1 emergency telephone number by a person other than an alarm company. The Corpus Christi City Ordinance Sec. 3½-2 states that an alarm permit is required. Annual alarm fees are $35 dollars for a residential alarm and $60 dollars for a commercial property. The alarm program contact number is 1-877-413-8308.

Three Chords and the Truth Billy Snipes…
By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Grace Askew… It’s been kind of an exciting week. That hard rain on Sunday was glorious. I was at the Back Porch watching Grace Askew (Memphis, TN) when it hit. We all huddled under the palapa bar and Grace just kept on playing. Her bluesy/ boozie voice went perfect with the thunder. Everything and everybody got Grace Askew from a little wet but we didn’t melt. Grace Memphis played the Back Porch last Askew is a different kind of soul. She Sunday. spends months at a time crisscrossing the nation, going from gig to gig all by herself. She said that’s how she does her best writing. He songs are pretty deep and dark but you can’t take your eyes off of her. The comparisons to Tom Waits have merit. At only 26, she’s an impressive gal.
I want to give a shout out to my pal Billy Snipes. I hadn’t seen Billy in a while and stopped by the Tarpon Ice House last weekend when I was passing by and saw his name on the marquee. I’m glad I did. He’s written a new crop of songs and added Billy Snipes played the some impressive Tarpon Ice House last sounds to his bag Friday night. of tricks. I really like the direction he’s headed lately. It’s a blend of reggae, folk and country and I think he’s found a unique sound. Let’s hear it for one of the good guys. Billy Snipes is a one man band that sure fills a room up. Have fun in Terlingua Billy, and tell Al Barlow and all the guys “Howdy” for us.
Melissa Brooke…
Green Light Pistol…
The Melissa Brooke Band played Giggity’s last Saturday night.
The family band, Green Light Pistol, played the Back Porch last Friday. I also saw another impressive show this weekend… Green Light Pistol (Burleson, TX) played the Porch on Friday. This is the Wallace family band with four sisters (Brooke on fiddle, Bethany on keys, Sally on mandolin and Madalyn on percussion), a brother (Caleb on stand-up bass), a father (didn’t catch his name but he plays a pretty mean trumpet) and a fiancé (Chad Fincher on guitar). All five of the siblings sing and sing well. Fincher takes the songwriting credits. When the four girls are up front on the mics, a harmony emerges that only sisters can produce. I was reminded of the beautiful Morales Sisters: Lisa and Roberta. Green Light’s sound is a kind of an up tempo blend of alt rock and roots/folk. I especially liked the original song dedicated to our armed forces; Hup, Two, Three, Four… really strong. These kids are special and it’s going to be a joy watching them mature. I see big things ahead. They are tight, driven and show-stopping good with songs so compelling I had a goofy smile on my face the whole time they were on stage. Throw adorable in there, too. With some more wood shedding, I’d put them in the same league with Della Mae, Dirty River Boys, Folk Family Revival and blacktopGYPSY.
Another local talent that’s been making some big waves lately is our own Melissa Brooke (Port Aransas, TX). She played Giggity’s last Saturday and really had the joint jumping. Her band, with guitarist Jason Ealey, bassist Sam Allred and drummer Larry Lee Hayes are excellent and with Mellissa up front, I think they have a winner. She’s just released a new single, You Could Have Heard a Teardrop, and continues to stay on the country music charts and open for such stars as Kevin Fowler and Rick Trevino. Stay the course young lady… you really got it going on and the fans really seem to love you! She’ll be back at Giggity’s on the 12th.
DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend… Tonight, Thursday, October 3rd, the fabulous Dirty River Boys (El Paso, TX) will play Brewster Street. I happen to think these guys hung the moon. They are about the best thing
