Doolittle Raiders fly into the sunset

box-office hit, and the phrase became part of the national lexicon. In the movie-theater previews for the film, MGM proclaimed that it was presenting the story “with supreme pride.”

Annual reunion Beginning in 1946, the surviving Raiders held a reunion each April, to commemorate the mission. It was held in al different city each year. In 1959, the city of Tucson, Arizona, as a gesture of respect and gratitude, presented the Doolittle Raiders with a set of 80 silver The final four, Dick Cole, Robert Hite, Edward Saylor goblets. Each goblet was engraved with the name of a Raider. There were 80 of the Raiders in April 1942, when they carried out one of the most courageous and heart-stirring military operations in this nation’s history. Now only four survive.

Retaliation After Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, with the United States reeling and wounded, something dramatic was needed to turn the war effort around. Even though there were no friendly airfields close enough to Japan for the United States to launch retaliation, a daring plan was devised. Sixteen B-25s were modified so that they could take off from the deck of an aircraft carrier. This had never before been tried -- sending such big, heavy bombers from a carrier. The 16 five-man crews, under the command of Lt. Col. James Doolittle, who himself flew the lead plane off the USS Hornet, knew that they would not be able to return to the carrier. They would have to hit Japan and then hope to make it to China for a safe landing.

Also in the wooden case is a bottle of 1896 Hennessy Very Special cognac. The year is not happenstance: 1896 was when Jimmy Doolittle was born. There had always been a plan: When there are only two surviving Raiders, they would open the bottle, at last drink from it, and toast their comrades who preceded them in death. As 2013 began, there were five living Raiders; then, in February, Tom Griffin passed away at age 96. After bailing out of his plane over a mountainous Chinese forest after the Tokyo raid, Griffin became ill with malaria, and almost died. When he recovered, he was sent to Europe to fly more combat missions. He was shot down, captured, and spent 22 months in a German prisoner of war camp.

Doolittle’s Raiders at the time of t heir raid on Tokyo They bombed Tokyo, then flew as far as they could. Four planes crash-landed; eleven more crews bailed out, and three of the Raiders died. Eight more were captured; three were executed. Another died of starvation in a Japanese prison camp. One crew made it to Russia. The Doolittle Raid sent a message from the United States to its enemies, and to the rest of the world: We will fight. And, no matter what it takes, we will win. Of the 80 Raiders, 62 survived the war. They were celebrated as national heroes, models of bravery. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced a motion picture based on the raid; “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo,” starring Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson, was a patriotic and emotional

So now, out of the original 80, only four Raiders remain: Dick Cole (Doolittle’s co-pilot on the Tokyo raid), Robert Hite, Edward Saylor and David Thatcher. All are in their 90s. They have decided that there are too few of them for the public reunions to continue. The events in Fort Walton Beach last month marked the end. It has come full circle; Florida’s nearby Eglin Field was where the Raiders trained in secrecy for the Tokyo mission. The town is threw a six-day celebration of their valor, including luncheons, a dinner and a parade. The men have decided that after this final public reunion they will wait until a later date -some time this year -- to get together once more, informally and in absolute privacy. That is when they will open the bottle of brandy. The years are flowing by too swiftly now; they are not going to wait until there are only two of them. They will fill the four remaining upturned goblets. And raise them in a toast to those who are gone.

But on the day of the raid, the Japanese military caught wind of the plan. The Raiders were told that they would have to take off from much farther out in the Pacific Ocean than they had counted on. They were told that because of this they would not have enough fuel to make it to safety. They went anyway.

Island Moon

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon

He had already doubled in the first inning and scored a run, but he did not think about that now. A loud roar rolled down from out of the stands as he approached home plate. With his right hand, he tipped his batting helmet to the fans and then stepped in. It was 3:02 p.m. A few minutes later he would repeat the gesture. Finally, he collected himself and focused as he had done 10,000-plus times before. For twenty years, he had taken his turn in the batting order and always while wearing an Astros jersey. Never again!

Frozen rope It’s gonna’ be tough to take that jersey off for the last time. He knows it, knows that it will be the hardest thing he has ever done in this game. The 3,060 hits and the 668 doubles were a piece of cake compared to this. I wonder how long he will sit in front of his locker before taking it off. At 3:04 p.m., a sharp ground ball to Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones and a frozen rope to first base, for Biggio’s final out, will be long remembered. It will be scored a simple 5-3 on your scorecard, but can you ever imagine how much work and sacrifice went into getting to that last at-bat? I can’t. On this day, the record will show that the Houston Astros beat the Atlanta Braves 3-0; but this day was really all about Craig Biggio and the fans of Houston.

Little engine that could On September 30, 2007, the city of Houston, Texas, said goodbye to Craig Biggio the only way they knew how. They stood, cheered,

whistled, cried, and pointed to their hometown hero. They held their children up in the air, over their heads, so they could later tell them that they had seen Craig Biggio play baseball. They held up signs confessing their affection for this little engine that could. All the while, their hearts beat faster. They knew that never again would they see him play the game he loves. They didn’t want to leave the ballpark, didn’t want him to leave. He had always been there, there for them, the fans. Three million of them turned out this season to say goodbye to # 7. His number will soon hang next to his pal; Jeff Bagwell’s # 5, high up on the wall in left field, with the other Astro legends. It’s where they belong, together.

Twenty minute disco ball Baseball is built on memories and records. There is no doubt that Biggio has certainly given us a lifetime’s worth to remember. As the game ended, he moved onto the field to shake hands with his teammates and coaches. He waved and tipped his hat to the fans for what seemed like twenty minutes, and still they stood and applauded. He ran around the inside of the ballpark, touching hands with as many fans as possible, Cal Ripken style. He stood as camera flashes went off at an alarming rate. It was as if a disco ball hung from the ceiling at Minute Maid Park. Then it was time, time for him to leave the field.

Bound for Cooperstown? His two boys Conor and Cavan, waited for their dad in the dugout as they had for years. They had waited many times for him to come home from a five-day road trip, waited for him to return from spring training, and waited for him to get home late at night after an extrainning game. He was all theirs now, along with his wife Patty, of course. “It’s hard to put into words some of the things that are going through my mind right now,” Biggio said. “I know I’m a very lucky man to have this many people come out. The reason I play the game the way I do is because they expect it. That’s the truth.” Now the clock starts for the year he and his fans will celebrate again. I will miss Craig Biggio. “Never Again” Yes, I watched, watched even though it was football season. I watched him step into the batter’s box for the last time. It was the seventh inning, and you could tell he was emotional while standing there in the on-deck circle, and that he knew it would be his last at-bat.

Photo by Brud Jones Three weeks after a Honda Ridgerunner got stuck on the sand on private property near Sea Pines it was removed this week. The owner of the vehicle, who drove it onto the property, has been fined for littering after leaving the truck’s burned out carcass behind. The fire has touched off a move on The Island to restrict access to private property from public rights of way. Property owners and city officials are now in discussion to increase enforcement of trespassing laws on The Island. Fines of $500 and up will be levied against people on private property along Packery Channel, Lake Padre, and land south of Sea Pines. Game wardens have told city officials they will soon place cameras on the land near Sea Pines to catch trespassers and the city officials are contemplating the placing of concrete barriers on the roadway at the end of Sea Pines to restrict access.

With an initial nervous twitch they picked up a ukulele and the historic first meeting of the Padre Island Uke Club was underway. If you were not there, then you were missing out. After some introductions, Joe confidently and enthusiastically led the group into the first night’s agenda.

PIDOG. PI Dog Group (PIDOG). A group of Islanders is working on setting up a dog park for our 4-legged friends and in the process have started a dog group so dog owners can find more opportunities to play with their pups. If you’re interested in joining the dog group you can call Bev Hoffman at 949-7551 or sign up on the website. Speaking of the website, you can learn more about the park as well just head over to: www.PadreIslandDogPark.com.

Repetition. That large, novice group strummed away at their soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone ukes and then played their first song that included two chords. Pretty soon they were finding chords without looking (a geat feat for the first evening) and then quickly learning a few more chords. Then came a gradual succession of easy songs where the group also sang (helped them keep rhythm). They were following along easier with every song and by the end of the first hour, the large group sang and played their way through about five songs. During the second hour the more experienced group played another five songs. Tremendous success for a first outing!

Ukeing it up Smiles and laughs were the rule as was real learning. The mixed group of adults flashed a smile of confidence once they were able to properly finger one chord and then easily transition to the next chord. They did it!

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between February 1 and April 30, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch tall trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge.

Sexton then announced to the group, “We have our first gig already lined up on Valentine’s Day. We will play in front of an audience of about 75 people”. That plug drew a few ‘oohs and ahhs’ from the beginning strummers.

Members will also receive a subscription to the Foundation’s colorful bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book, which includes information about tree planting and care. To receive the free trees, send a $10 membership contribution to 5 CRAPEMYRTLES, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by January 31, 2014. Texas residents can also join online at arborday.org/january.

Joe Sexton, organizer of the Padre Island Uke Club was very pleased with the turnout commenting, “They all seemed to really enjoy themselves and they learned some chords and played some songs in the process”. Sexton polled the group after each session, asking what they learned. They all claimed that they learned something and left brimming with satisfaction. There is magic in a group playing and singing together and at times on Tuesday evening that magic surfaced.

Port Aransas Community Theatre Auditions Actors Needed for ‘Til Beth Do Us Part’ By Brent Rourk PACT is holding an audition on Sunday, January 12, @ 7:00 PM for two male actors for the comedy ‘Til Beth Do Us Part’. One of the characters is Gibby, who is in his 50’s and Suzannah’s husband. He has been married 27 years and marriage has slipped a bit on his priority list, which will change when Beth comes into their lives. The other character is Hank (40-50), Margo’s husband who is going through his own mid-life crisis.

Another living room group getting ready to try their hand at a few chords

These two characters, best friends, then try to stop Beth from ruining their comfortable lives. It gets wild and wacky from there. If you have been in a play, then come and audition. If this is something new for you, then give acting a try. Start your new year off with a new adventure.

All hopeful uke players (and it IS an easy instrument to learn) should consider coming out and joining the fun. Beginners and any other levels play from 6-7 PM on Tuesdays. More advanced players or beginners who catch on quicker play from 7-8 PM. The club is seeking a larger island venue to use for practice. Contact Joe Sexton at 608-305-1955 or check out his webpage at http:// www.padreislandukeclub.com/. This is guaranteed fun and now is the time to join. Do something different, get out of the rut, put another check mark on your bucket list, go have fun and get out of the house. You will meet some fun people and you begin to play within minutes a fun instrument.

The Port Aransas Community Theatre is located at 2327 Highway 361 in Port Aransas, Texas. Their phone number is 361-749-6036. The play will run from February 29th until March 16th.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Lighthouse Rick to retire… Before I get started on my Winter Texan live music recommendations, I have some breaking news to tell you about. First of all, our friendly neighborhood lighthouse keeper, Rick Reichenbach, has announced his retirement and will no longer be in charge of flipping the switch (on at night, off in the day) as of May 1. Rick plans to give away all of his belongings and move to Nicaragua. Actually, I’m only half kidding here. He told me that he plans to throw all of his winter coats on the tarmac as he’s flying off to his new jungle home. Rick has taken several trips to Nicaragua in the past couple of years and is convinced that it has the amenities needed to sustain his happiness: pristine beaches, cheap rum and good cigars. There’s no word yet as to who his replacement might be, but suffice it say, it’s quite the coveted position. Between Reichenbach and his predecessor, Rick Pratt, they can claim the last 30 years at that job. Good luck in Nicaragua, Lighthouse Rick and can I have your stereo?

Riptide plays Giggity’s every Tuesday

The Medicare Band plays Sharkey’s every Friday. The Medicare Band is one of the most recognizable and long standing “Winter Texan” bands that Port A has to offer. This nine piece ensemble, complete with a horn section (Cheo Reyes on trumpet, Jack Trowbridge on tenor sax and the band leader, Wayne Lindstad on trombone) and banjo/violin player, Don Lewis, has been around for nearly 13 years. Each winter they take up residence at Sharkey’s Beach Club every Friday (6-9) in January and February. The band plays jewels from the Big Band era of the 30’s and 40’s and enlists the talents from local songbirds, Betty Crawford and Pam Dowdy. The Reverend Tom Dowdy plays bass, Lori Roussel plays keyboards and Walt Roussel plays drums. This band is a huge hit with couples who love to dance and Sharkey’s big dance floor is more than accommodating for some fun ballroom dancing. They even play a little country here and there.

Colorado Bob Reed, Paul Fain and Ronnie Narmour harmonizing at the Tarpon Ice House

Welcome Winter Texans!!! Welcome to all our Winter Texans who choose to make the Gulf Coast home in the winter months. Who could blame you given the beautiful weather and all the great activities we have to offer, not to mention the friendly atmosphere that our islands extend. I want to tell you about some great live music around town that is directed toward Winter Texans.

Berry and Little Richard. One cool thing about these guys… they don’t take breaks. They will play and play for three hours straight. Riptide plays every Tuesday at Giggity’s from 6:30- 10. They kicked off their string of Tuesdays this week to a nice response of Winter Texans who gave the dance floor a solid work-out. I think this thing is going to get huge.

Carol Elliott… Local folk singer extraordinaire, Carol Elliott, has several gigs coming up at the Tarpon Ice House and Shorty’s. Carol is a big hit with Winter Texans. Her music is a nice mixture Carol Elliott will of originals and familiar play the Tarpon Ice covers from such House on January artists as Patsy Cline, 10th and 24th. Roger Miller, Hank Williams, Joan Baez and Willie Nelson. Carol moved to Port A from Nashville where she was a professional performer and songwriter for many years. She has toured internationally and has five studio recordings to her credit. One of her songs, Corn, Water and Wood, was recorded by Michael Martin Murphy and won the coveted Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. She has performed before millions of people on television in Europe and was one of the regular performers at

The PA Rockers play every Wednesday at Bernies. The PA Rockers are an oldies rock band that originally was a group of Winter Texans who met in Port A. The group has had some personnel changes this season due to health concerns. The band’s founder and drummer, Mark Munson from Minnesota, will be replaced by local drummer Deb Dault this season and bassist Tommy Huff moved away and has been replaced by local bassist, Woodie Ray Lawson. Original members, Colorado Bob Reed (guitar, vocals, keys and harmonica) and John Boeckler (guitar and vocals) are returning this year as is local musician Steve Goldstein (guitar, vocals & mandolin). Everyone got all that? The band plays every Wednesday (6:30-9:30) at Bernies, usually to big, rabid crowds. This one has the feel of a 40 year high school reunion and is a must see on the Winter Texan social agenda. Colorado Bob tells me that this year they plan to play a lot more British invasion stuff since it’s the 50th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America. I’m sure they’ll still play their share of Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and The Kingsmen too.

Riptide… Riptide is another oldies rock band who plays hits from the 50’s and 60’s. This band plays everything from Elvis to surf music to country to the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Chuck

the Kerrville Folk Festival for years. Originally from Atlanta, Elliott started out as a street singer in San Francisco and has many heartfelt songs from her life’s experiences. She will be at the Tarpon Ice House (5:30-7:30) tomorrow, Friday the 10th and again on Friday, January 24. Plus, she will play Shorty’s on Saturday, February 1st (6-9) with some of her friends that will include Father James Derkits and Tiffany Duckworth.

These shows are all early, starting in the 5:30 to 7:00 range and are artists that retired folks can relate to. There is no cover charge for any of these shows.

PA Rockers…

And, there is more earth shattering news in my arena… long time islander and close friend, Paul Fain, has announced that he has put the Tarpon Ice House on the market and will shut his doors on February 3rd. Paul opened the Ice House about six years ago and has been a mainstay in the local live music scene. One of the highlights of the year has been the annual Tarpon Music Bash held the weekend before Memorial Day each year. The “Bash”, as we’ve come to call it, hosted dozens of Hill Country, as well as Gulf Coast, musicians who descended on us with three days of non-stop music. Folks such as Al Barlow, Billy Snipes, Scott & Smiley, Collin Creel and Ashley Monical came to call the Ice House home, year after year. Fain originally opened the business as a glass blowing studio but that somehow morphed into the Tarpon Ice House, which became a reality largely due to a close friendship with the late Jim Winn, owner of the original Port A Ice House. After Winn shut down his Ice House, Fain felt there was a void in the community without it and eventually developed his concept from there. I will certainly feel the void again come February 3rd. Good luck to you, Paul and DeDe, in whatever the next chapter chooses to throw at you. You are a couple of the good guys!

Williams plays old torch songs from the 40’s and beyond by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Cole Porter. His voice is as smooth as velvet. Taylor accompanies on piano and also sings great blues and soulful songs by artists such as Ray Charles and Nat King Cole. This combination is a delightful show that bears resemblances to the movie Casablanca. They could easily be playing the lobby bar at a grand hotel in Morocco. Also, Giggity’s has great food and runs an All You Can Eat Southern Fried Catfish special ($11.95) on Mondays and the kitchen stays open until 1:00 AM.

Free Beer Band… The Free Beer Band is a string band who has been playing at the Tarpon Ice House for a couple of years now. The nucleus of the group has always been Steve Goldstein (guitar, mandolin and vocals) and Crawford Brown (stand-up bass and vocals) with a revolving personnel that includes Arnie Govella, Daddy Dale West, Bob Reed and John Boeckler, among others. These guys know how to have a good time and usually get all the wives involved in the show at one point or the other. It’s not unusual to see ten or twelve people on stage singing background to The Weight or any number of standard sing-alongs. Since the Ice House is closing, it’s a fair bet that they’ll be moving the show over to Shorty’s or Giggity’s in February.
