Seashore News Seashore Learning Center students celebrated the holiday season at the annual Winter Tea and art auction last Friday. Each group sang carols with the theme of “Holiday Wishes,” and an art piece created by each classroom was auctioned. The live auction brought in $23,000, and a silent auction of individual art pieces garnered an additional $4,400. SLC Director Maria Thompson and kindergarten teacher Marcie Morris react in surprise as the bidding skyrockets on Morris’ class “kinder Van Gogh” sunflower. Thompson painted her hair pink for the event as part of a challenge to the students to reach the school’s Scholastic book fair goal of $8,000.

It’s Always about the Money-3 By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon Gambling in general has become allconsuming in this country, an addiction like smoking or drinking. Wagering our hard-earned money has replaced hard work, dedication and the American Way. The American Dream now hangs on the side of a one-armed bandit, lies in the wheel of a roulette table, or is hidden under the silver square of a scratch-off lottery ticket. One roll of the dice can buy a new car or erase a year’s worth of income. Sports’ gambling is far worse, yet overpaid athletes brag on their ability to win or lose large amounts of money as if it were a rite of passage. High-stakes poker games from members of the Olympic Dream Team made more news than the scores of their basketball games. Some teams now prohibit their players from playing cards for money on long distance flights; seems that the losers took their fleecing personally. And now we have illegal poker games being held literally underground; just ask A-Rod. Billions of dollars are wagered each year on sporting events by the general public. Heck, Pete Rose never had to leave the clubhouse to place his bets. Fans bet on events in which they have absolutely no control over the outcome. It is literally a 50-50 chance, a crap shoot. Most bet to create the thrill that is missing in their personal lives. Even though the public is aware that Vegas keeps 10 percent of every dollar wagered, win or lose, still they place a bet on a team using foolish things like the color of the team’s uniforms or whether they are playing at home or away. It has become a scientific way to lose money, yet they are willing to take that chance in order to feel like a winner. Real winners don’t wager, they save and invest. Remember, it’s always about the money! Or is it?
If it feels good and makes it on the highlight reel, then why not show up the other guy. It may just get you another endorsement. You know a dunk is still only worth two points, regardless of how it goes in the basket, and touchdowns count as six points whether they hand the ball to the official or spike it in the end zone. Home runs count as one run regardless of how far it travels, as long as it clears the fence while in fair territory. Of course if there are others on base, they get to count those runs too. If there were style points involved, then I might

pay more attention. It’s all about the feeling now, instead of the results. If it feels good and makes it on the highlight reel, then why not show up the other guy. It may just get you another endorsement.

Finish Strong! Just when it looked like there was going to be a party at Lincoln Financial Field (Home of the Philadelphia Eagles) Sunday Night, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo came through when few thought he could. Romo threw a game-winning touchdown with just over a minute to go on Sunday, giving the Cowboys a crucial 24-23 victory over the Washington Redskins. The win meant that the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the Chicago Bears game Sunday night was irrelevant in deciding the NFC East Champion. The Eagles have to win in Dallas to win the division and make the playoffs. The win by the Eagles did give them the tiebreaker over every team in the NFC North, and could be the difference between the 3rd and 4th seed should they win in Dallas next week. The Philadelphia Eagles’ visit to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 will determine the NFC East winner — loser goes home — and serve as the capstone of the NFL’s regular-season schedule Dec. 29. The Cowboys played “win-and-in” regular season finales the past two seasons against the New York Giants and Washington Redskins but lost both times. NBC will televise the contest as the final installment of Sunday Night Football in 2013.

As we near the end of 2013, celebrating Christmas and the holiday season, there is no doubt that scores of sports-themed stories are swirling in the winter air waiting to be told. In “Sports Talk” we are always on the lookout for the transformative and thought-provoking tale that helps us add character and purpose to everyday living. But in the genuine spirit of the season, allow us the privilege to simply stand back with all of you and appreciate that gift that unites us. Nowhere is it better expressed than in the lyrics to Barbra Streisand’s “Here’s to Life”, written by Phyllis Molinary, Arthur Butler, and Artie Butler. Please take a moment to absorb them and reflect on the deep value of that gift, life itself.

Why is it that some kid from “podunk,” any state, is hailed as the next greatest player at the age of 11? Just read where some kid, age 7, signed a professional contract with the Spanish soccer club, Real Madrid. They wanted to make sure he didn’t sign with some other team. Why don’t we let him grow up a bit first, he may become a better scientist than a midfielder. Because, it’s always about the money! Or is it? Why do the media describe some players’ accomplishments as the biggest thing to happen since 1967, or 1980, as if there were no history before then; anything that happened ten or more years ago, most players know nothing about anyway. Don’t misunderstand, there are times when great moments in sports really do happen, extraordinary events that make us pause or gasp out loud, but all that is really needed is for us to enjoy the moment, perhaps discuss with friends, and then move on. We can hold onto the memories; we don’t need to have a five-day discussion, on three different networks, by ten different talking heads, and write two books about the event. If you live long enough, it will more than likely happen again, and this time it may be even more spectacular than before. When a player has a great game or two or three great games, why do the media feel this need to compare him to all the players that came before him? Yes, the Cubs will win another World Series, just ask the Red Sox. So, let’s allow some time to go by. It’s always about the money! Or is it?

Here’s to life Funny how the time just flies How love can go from hellos to sad goodbyes And leave you with the memories you’ve memorized To keep your winters warm. But there’s no yes in yesterday And who knows what tomorrow brings, or takes away As long as I’m still in the game, I want to play For laughs, for life, for love, So here’s to life and every joy it bringsHere’s to Life! It’s the story of a woman chasing her dream of becoming an investigative reporter in San Francisco, Holly Rivera Berry has to return to her hometown of Bonafides on the Texas Coastal Bend to settle her recently deceased father’s estate. She discovers that just before he died her father researched the possibility that via an old Mexican land grant the Rivera family owns The Gap, a natural channel to the Gulf of Mexico. Land speculators plan to erect luxury homes, resorts, hotels, and a casino along The Gap and Holly comes to doubt that her father died of natural causes. The more she investigates, the more things don’t add up. One by one her allies fall victim to fatal accidents and it looks like Holly might be next.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Happy Holidays from the Moon Monkeys…
John Hogan on sound at Sam’s Burger Joint
The Moon Monkeys annual Christmas portrait.
Merry Christmas everybody and Happy New Year!!! I hope Santa was as good to you as he was to me… I got a new mandolin for Christmas this year. That’s right. My buddy Rockin’ Dale Rankin gave me a brand spanking new mandolin. I’ve already mastered D and G chords and A is on the way. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a bit partial to three chords. I love the sound of a mandolin and can’t think of a finer gift. We Moon Monkeys had our annual get together at Dale and Jan’s new house last week and took our annual Christmas portrait. That’s when I got my mandolin. This year Brent Rourk joined our ranks and got in on the portrait… he’s earned it and does a fine job with his features. I want to tell you, we all really love what we do and have a great time putting out our little rag week to week. It may not look like it, but we put a lot of love into every issue and appreciate every single one of our readers and advertisers. Thank you!
Toni Price, Bobby Blue Bland, Gatemouth Brown, Buckwheat Zydeco, C.J. Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, Zachary Richard, etc, etc.). As it turned out, my old sound man, John Hogan, is still running sound there. He has one of the best ears in the business and has worked shows for darn near everybody. I had seen both Zack Walthers and Tom Gilliam perform in Corpus and Port A and was familiar with them. Gilliam had my old pal, David Spencer, with him on lead guitar. David is married to Lisa Morales and is nothing short of a genius when it comes to guitar. I especially enjoy Zack Walthers voice… it’s beyond soulful. I had never been to Sam’s Burger Joint and was really impressed with the place. It looked, felt and sounded like a first class live music venue. There’s a lot of history in that place and I’m very proud that the Sam’s regime has kept the torch alive. If you are ever looking for a good live music joint in San Antonio, you can’t do better than Sam’s. They put on first class shows! I’m told the burgers are pretty good too.
Sam’s Burger Joint…
when it comes to soul singers… she’s simply the best. I may be a little prejudice being that managed her career for a number of years. The Black Ties were a total blast though, complete with doo-wop singers and a horn section who did dance steps ala’ Temptations. Scarlett Olsen The place was totally packed and everyone played the Continental Gallery in there had their soul last Saturday night shake on.
The Continental Club…
Guitar wiz David Spencer played with Tom Gilliam last Friday at Sam’s Burger Joint
I went to visit friends and family last weekend and spent Friday in San Antonio and Saturday and Sunday in Austin. My buddies, Tucker Tuesch II and Tucker Tuesch 3.0 were in S.A. from Talent, Oregon and I hadn’t seen either of them in quite some time. Tucker II is Joe King Carrasco’s brother and was introduced to me by Doug Sahm back in the early 90’s. They have a beautiful ranch up in Oregon which I love visiting. Tucker III and I went out looking for music on Friday and ended up at Sam’s Burger Joint to hear Zack Walthers and Tom Gilliam. I have a lot of history in that building back in an earlier incantation when it was Billy Blues circa: 1992. Back in the day we brought in some great shows (Buddy Guy, Jimmy Rogers, Junior Wells, Johnny Clyde Copeland, Marcia Ball, Joe Ely, James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin, Lou Ann Barton, Angela Strehli, Lavelle White,
On Saturday, I headed to Bastrop to see my family and later hooked up with my pal, Preacher Keen, to go out and hear some music in Austin. We started out on South Congress at the Continental Gallery next to the Continental Club and saw a young blues singer named Scarlett Olsen. She was an infant compared to some of the blues masters that have graced the stages of Austin, but showed a lot of poise and heart. Her song selection was tasty and her voice and delivery showed real promise. This young lady is on the right path. Next, we went next door to the legendary Continental Club which has certainly seen it’s share of musical giants through the years. The place only holds 125 people so they often put on three or four shows a night and clear the room after each act. The show we caught was an old school ten piece soul/ R&B band by the name of Latasha Lee and the Black Ties. Lee was a lady in perhaps her mid 30’s who led this big band with authority and precision. He voice was in the vein of Gladys Knight or Etta James but not as refined. I kept thinking, as good as this lady was, she still couldn’t hold a light to Miss Lavelle White. Miss Lavelle is my standard

and pretended to shoot me with his guitar as if it was a rifle… it got a big laugh from the crowd and he made his point. In this day an age when absolutely everyone has a camera, it has become increasingly annoying when anyone and everyone can walk up and stick it in your face and damn your performance. I learned a lesson.
DO NOT MISS LIST
Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys will play Giggitys on New Year’s Eve Mike Milligan & the Altar Boys… After the Continental, we headed down to 6th Street to catch the Mike Milligan and the Altar Boy’s last set at B.D. Riley’s Irish Pub. These guys are old friends and play Port A often. They will be here at Giggity’s on New Year’s Eve. No matter where they are, this band gets the place hopping. Milligan plays a rowdy jump harmonica and every song is up tempo and driving. He’s somewhere between Junior Medlow and Charlie Musslewhite… I can’t think of a better show for New Year’s Eve.
Armadillo Christmas Bizarre…
Latasha Lee and the Black Ties played the Continental Club last Saturday night
December 26, 2013
On Sunday, I went back into Austin to go to the Armadillo Christmas Bizarre. This perennial event is held in the Palmer Events Center and is a huge deal with over 160 artists selling their wares. They always have the crème of Austin’s live music scene playing. I know this year Marcia Ball, Shelley King, Carolyn Wonderland, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Terri Hendrix, Band of Heathens, Jimmy LaFave, Elysa Gilkyson and Shinyribs (and much more) played. I saw Sons of Fathers while I was there. When I walked up to take their picture, the guitarist squared off at me
Tonight, Thursday the 26th, Robert Earl Keen will perform his annual Christmas show at Brewster Street Ice House. The always adorable Terri Hendrix will open the show. I did a fairly large preview in last week’s column but suffice it to say, you will be able to hear the crowd’s sing-along to Merry Christmas From the Family from at least a mile away. On Friday, the 27th, Lyrical Bynge will at Giggity’s, Stevie Start will be at Shorty’s and Mike Williams and Rocky Arnold featuring Eddie Olivares on saxophone will bring their long awaited jazz show to the Tarpon Ice House. Also on Friday, Ruben V will bring his guitar magic to Doctor Rockits and Scarecrow People will be at the Executive Surf Club. This will be an early show at 4:00 PM. On Saturday the 28th, the incomparable Shelley King (Austin, TX) will be at Shorty’s. This is the show to catch people… don’t miss this one. Also on Saturday, the Melissa Brooke Band will be at Giggity’s, JB and the Moonshine Band will be at Brewster Street and Chris Sanz will be at Scuttlebutt’s. On New Year’s Eve (Tuesday) the show to catch will be Mike Milligan at Giggity’s. Also, Ray T will be at the Flats, the nerd-rock band, the Spazmatics will be at Brewster, Green Party will be at Rockits and the great rockabilly party band,Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang, will be at the Executive Surf Club.
Be safe out there and either call a cab or have Betty Bail Bond on speed dial. Happy New Year!!!
And that’s the truth!
