Miles Merwin found this mermaid during the storm surge from Ingrid. He took a couple of shots for the Moon. Rememberif you see a mermaid, approach with cautionThis one appears to have just eaten. Much like snakes, mermaids eat their prey whole, and can often be seen with a large lump in their midsection after a large meal.
Ingrid turned the beach into canals this week.
Whoa there pardner... somebody turned the Sea Pines sign into abstract art over the weekend. Maybe a comment on our topsy-turvy world.
The restaurant at Padre Isles Country Club is open but you will have to walk from the parking lot to get there.

We Are Family
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon The year 1941 was an unforgettable season in Major League baseball. The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers four games to one to win the World Series, and Joe DiMaggio won the American League Most-Valuable-Player Award over Boston Red Sox outfielder, Ted Williams. Both of these stars accomplished incredible feats that year. Most baseball fans will remember that New York Yankees centerfielder, Joe DiMaggio’s 56 consecutive games hitting-streak, as well as Ted Williams’ .406 batting average would dominate the sports pages.
Crash Davis As Minor League catcher “Crash” Davis, played by actor Kevin Costner, said in the movie, Bull Durham, “They count everything in baseball.” It’s true. It’s almost like baseball code. Just say .406 or 56 game hitting-streak and most hardball fans will remember 1941. It has also been written that no one has come close to duplicating this hitting-streak or recorded a .400 or better batting average for an entire season since then..
A 13
my opinion, he was not the last professional baseball player to bat over .400. It was Aaron Pointer.
Corpus Christi Animal Care Services-Vector, Spraying For Mosquitoes Due to Rain.
On to the NFL Aaron Pointer spent the majority of his 12 years playing baseball in the Minor Leagues and Japan. He did have a cup of coffee with the Houston club on three different occasions, 1963, 1966, and 1967. While in the big leagues he hit two home runs, off pitchers Joe Nuxhall and Sammy Ellis.
Corpus Christi Animal Care Services – Vector, has recorded an increase in mosquitos due to the heavy rain. The hatching of mosquito larvae is more active during times of heavy rain. While the mosquito count has increased, there are no cases signs of West Nile virus at this time.
After putting down his glove for good, Aaron Pointer began officiating recreation league football games. There he worked his way up through high school and college ball, where he became the first African-American to officiate football in the Pac-10 Conference. He eventually joined the National Football League in 1987 as a head lineman, where he officiated for over a decade. He retired from the NFL in 2003.
Vector is unable to spray during actual rain and must wait for clear skies. Weather permitting; Vector will be spraying the Botanical area, the Lakes area, and the King’s crossing area tonight starting at 8:00pm. Vector technicians are also looking to the upcoming cool front forecasted for Friday to move many of these mosquitos out of the area.
We are family Aaron Pointer was talented and could do it all on a baseball diamond. All except sing that is. You see, Aaron Pointer had four sisters who could sing and did so very well, thank you. When the Pointer Sisters recorded their hit record “We Are Family,” they were not only talking about just themselves but also their brother Aaron.
But, there is a small glitch in one of the numbers, a “snafu” if you will. You see Minor League players are also paid athletes and therefore are listed Crash Davis as professional baseball The 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates players. So, here’s adopted the Pointer Sisters the story; you decide. Twenty years later, in 1961, a 19-year-old song and helped make it famous during their named Aaron Pointer was living in California. championship run against the favored Baltimore He had been born in Little Rock, Arkansas. This combination of talent overwhelmed the fans and the league. The results left Aaron Pointer with a .402 batting average at the end of the year. That season, 1961, still stands as the last year in which any professional baseball player hit .400 or better for a full season, not 1941. No disrespect is intended towards Ted Williams who was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history and yes he did accomplish his feat against Major League pitching, but in
Animal Care Services would like to remind pet owners that mosquitos can also cause heartworms in pets. Heartworms are transmitted from animal to animal by mosquitoes that are infected with a specific parasite (Dirofilaria immitis.) Please contact your local veterinarian to have your dog tested for heartworms and placed on heartworm preventative.

Casino Night Pays Off By Brent Rourk The gambling was hot and heavy as folks quickly and sometimes carefully pondered their cards or the numbers on the roulette wheel before ambitiously sliding a handful of chips out on the table. Some bets paid off and others did not. Occasional gambler yells and screams punctuated the evening while in the main theater area of the Port Aransas Community Theater a line-up of colorful and capable Las Vegas style entertainers crooned and danced their way into the hearts of those who wanted to rest or simply to enjoy the night without the rigors of gambling. Poker, blackjack and roulette devotees proudly carried their buckets of chips from one gambling hall to another, stopping to listen to songs, to put their tickets in the dozens of raffle cups or to have a drink and bite to eat. All wore smiles and flashed a little hitch in their step, in sync to the tune being performed at that moment. One blackjack player defied odds as dealer Ken dealt her 5 straight aces. A roulette player quickly amassed an admirable pot and then took a break. The purpose of the evening was to entertain locals while at the same time raising money for scholarships. As a joint venture between PACT and the Port Aransas Kiwanis Club, Casino
Night allowed both groups the opportunity to increase their scholarship accounts.
The entertainment featured a young and local ‘Rat Pack’ that sang Come Fly With Me and later assisted in the final song while wearing daring and brilliant red Elvis style costumes. Local belly dancers performed a few times, showing more moves than the card dealers and enticing audience eyes to lock on stage. A melodic solo rendition of Can’t Help Falling in Love with You was performed by Amanda Tipps while all of the entertainers helped singer Rick Adams deliver an old favorite in Luck Be A Lady. The finale was also a team approach as different soloists and groups charged through a lively performance of Viva Las Vegas.
Entertainment director and PACT Board Member Ashley Knotts assessed the evening’s entertainment as, “…so much fun for everybody on stage as well as those in attendance. The goal was to bring a glitzy Las Vegas atmosphere to the event. I believe we succeeded.”
The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the gambling, food, drink, and entertainment. PACT Board Member Darlene beamed as she summed up the evening, “The theater looked like Las Vegas for sure and the show on stage was above any show I have seen in Las Vegas.” It is a must see next year, so mark your calendars for Casino Night 2014.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Free Beer Band…
dig these guys tasty song selection. Billy has a unique ability to slow a song down and make it his. That’s especially apparent on Townes’ songs. There’s a strong chemistry going on and ain’t nobody getting in a hurry here. These are two delightful souls.
A blues weekend in Port A…
The Free Beer Band plays the Tarpon Ice House every Thursday. I finally made it over to spend some time at my old hang, The Tarpon Ice House, last week. It had been a while since I’d seen my pals and I wanted to check in on the Free Beer Band (Corpus Christi, TX) who has played there every Thursday since the creation of man. I’m glad to report that all is alive and well in both camps. This band takes on slight variances in personnel from time to time and I was curious who the present incantation might hold. As expected, Steve Goldstein (vocals, guitar and mandolin) and Crawford Brown (vocals and stand-up bass) were ever present, as was Daddy Dale West (electric guitar and vocals) who lives in Austin but has played with this ensemble on a semi-regular basis since its inception. But to my surprise, our old pal Arnold Govella has joined the band and brother, that’s a good thing. Arnie adds a kind of classic rock dimension to this string band. In the hour or so that I was there, they ran through the Free Beer songbook with such sing-along gems as Far Away Eyes, Dead Skunk, Dead Flowers and The Weight. I look forward to these Thursday shows even more in the winter when our seasonal residents and members of the PA Rockers (Bob Reed, Mark Munson, Val Synenko and John Boeler) appear from the frozen north and lend their ample talents. Also with these fellows we get a whole other cheering section with “the women of Free Beer”, who are a whole other entity to be reckoned with.
Also last weekend, it was blues central. Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys (Austin, TX) played the Back Porch, J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX) played Giggity’s on Saturday and Rich Lockhart played there on Friday. Not to mention Ray T and City Crew (Aransas Pass, TX) played the Flat’s and Raeanne and the Ride (Port A, TX) played Shorty’s. That’s a lot of blues there, boys and girls. At the Mike Milligan show, we were treated to a couple of songs by visiting blues dignitary, Preacher Keen (Austin, TX) who was in town visiting friends. Coldfire was also on fire and the crowd loved it at Giggity’s. You’ll never hear me complain about too much blues. Never.
Open Jam at the Ice House…

Mandy Rowden & Billy Abel…
Kinky Friedman…
Billy Abel and Mandy Rowden played Shortys last Friday. Last weekend produced an entire wave of repeat artists who play Port A with regularity. I saw Mandy Rowden and Billy Abel (Austin, TX) at Shorty’s and loved it. I loved it even more when Mandy broke out her fiddle. She plays a pretty mean guitar and mandolin, but when she plays the fiddle, hearts melt. Plus I really
Tonight, Thursday, September 19th, the inimitable Kinky Friedman (Utopia, TX) will bring his Texas Jew Boys to the Gaff for an 8 pm performance. Tickets are $30. Chicago born, Richard Samet Friedman is an American Texas Country singer, songwriter, novelist, humorist, politician and former columnist for Texas Monthly who styles himself in the mold of popular American satirists Will Rogers and Mark Twain. He was one of two independent candidates in the 2006 election for the office of Governor of Texas and received 12.6% of the vote, placing fourth in the six-person race. Among his campaign slogans were “How Hard Could It Be?”, “Why The Hell Not?”, “My Governor is a Jewish Cowboy” and “He ain’t Kinky, he’s my Governor”. Friedman lives at Echo Hill Ranch, his family’s summer camp near Kerrville. He founded the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, also located near Kerrville, whose mission is to care for stray, abused and aging animals; more than 1,000 dogs have been saved from animal euthanasia. Friedman has released 13 albums since 1973.

This weekend… This weekend will bring a few new names plus some old friends back to our area. On Friday, September 20th, the reggae band, Flat Broke (Corpus Christi, TX) will make their Shelley King will play Giggity’s debut, Shorty’s this Saturday our favorite string night. band, Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX) will return to Shorty’s and the Rusty Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) will bring their straight shootin’ country show to the Back Porch. On Saturday, September 21st, Will Owen Gage (San Antonio, TX) will return to Giggity’s and blues belter extraordinaire, Shelley King (Austin, TX) will play Shorty’s. King was the 2008 “Official Texas State Musician” which says that the state of Texas is mighty proud of her. They should be, she can sing the phone book and make Aretha Franklin blush. This show gets my PICK OF THE WEEK… DO NOT MISS Shelley King. It doesn’t get any better. Trust me! Also on Saturday, Tyler Rogers (Dallas, TX) will play the Back Porch. I’m unfamiliar with Tyler but his website says he sounds like John Mayer, Adam Hood, William Clark Green, Matchbox 20 and Corey Smith.
Locals Jackie Bales, Raeanne Reed, Billy Snipes and Uel Jackson performed at the Tarpon Ice House last Sunday. On Sunday, I went back over to the Ice House to check out the weekly jam hosted by Uel Jackson. I was delighted to see the wealth of local talent on hand (Billy Snipes, Paul Taylor, Jackie Bales, Raeanne Reed, Sky Malone and Sean Hunter) plus a few out of towners. Uel’s daughter, Sierra Jackson, was in town from Concan and sang a few for us. She’s got a remarkably strong voice that works well with her daddy. Paul Taylor is pretty much a monster on piano. He definitely keeps the beat jumping hard and plays a lot of 50’s style rock and roll (Jerry Lee Lewis, etc). BTW, Paul tells me that he is now hosting his own Open Jam at the V.F.W. in Ingleside on Sundays at 2:00 pm.

The Rusty Brothers will play the Back Porch on Friday. On the horizon… On the near horizon, watch for shows on Friday, September 27th by Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters (Corpus Christi, TX) at Giggity’s, Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays (N. Padre Island, TX) at Shorty’s and Green Light Pistol (Burleson, TX) at the Back Porch. Green Light Pistol sounds interesting. Their website gave this insight, “Four sisters, a brother, and a boyfriend playing homegrown music with playful harmonies, interesting melodies,
Green Light Pistol will play the Back Porch on September 27th.
unpredictable song directions, and a charismatic stage presence is a tough act to beat. Their sound is like…hmmm…imagine if Mumford & Sons, Telegraph Canyon, and Sarah Jaffee had a drunken tryst and sent the resulting love child to be raised by a sweet grandmother in the

sticks of Burleson.” A majority sibling band, the group delivers up to four part harmonies and five different lead vocalists with mandolin, fiddle, upright bass, piano, trumpet, guitar, and a built in driving rhythm section. On Saturday, September 28th, local C&W star Melissa Brooke will play Giggity’s, guitar master Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) will play the Back Porch and Americana standout Max Stalling (Ft. Worth, TX) will play the Third Coast Theater. On Sunday, September 29th, the Porch again keeps it interesting with a show by national touring artist, Grace Askew (Memphis, TN). Sing Out Magazine describes her as “If Tom Waits had a singer/writer daughter in Memphis, it would be Askew with her gallery of lost souls on the graveyard shift. Gutsy, bluesy, and a bit boozy, she quietly sings with jagged languor and a skewed spirituality. Discreet percussion, guitar and, on occasion, wistful lap steel notes sagely frame her rough-hewn sophistication.” She has opened or toured with such artists as Marty Stuart, Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry, Band of Heathens, and Jesse Winchester. Her cover of Springsteen’s I’m On Fire is haunting.
And that’s the truth!
