When the Design Finds You
By Jennifer Wither The front door was wide open; so I entered the old fossil stone home with peeked curiosity. I was greeted with a timeless Rococo fireplace mantle, high arched entry ways and antique Chrystal chandeliers, all of French persuasion. The owners, Seth and Tatianna Saenz, who had hired me to make suggestions for their dining room walls were operating a 4”grinder; sanding off a bright mustard color heavy trial texture on the walls. Underneath, was a raw plaster and a most complimentary color of robin egg blue. Design TIP… Sometimes the best laid plans in design…. are not best. I have found that, “When you think you have it all figured out; that is the moment you remove art from your options.” Good design is art. Art evolves…it is not predestined. Good design leaves room for the canvass to evolve and the unexpected to find you…. These dining room walls were a perfect example of the design finding you. When I saw this combination of the timeless plaster and colors, it became very clear to me the direction the walls were begging to be found…. FRESCO!!! Fresco was found in ancient Roman homes, it is artwork created with different pigments on

wet plaster. Sometimes fresco art was painted over plaster that was chipped or cracked to hide the imperfections. Plaster was also an ancient application. Today it adds instant character and patina to any room or surface. The earliest
The grand opening at the new MikelMays on Bob Hall Pier was a hit. The cool breeze and cool view were a hit with the crowd.
Fresco art on plaster walls plaster was usually made of lime, sand, animal hair and water. These fading Fresco colors and the distressed plaster slowly being revealed were art in the making. Unaware of evolving…. design their own efforts the homeowners were creating a timeless patina and a personal masterpiece for the dining room walls they had summoned me to “fix.” If you have any questions you can message, Jennifer Wither at Dream It, Build It, Love It on Facebook.

the third time in recent months a For driver failed to negotiate the curve on the Aquarius Extension and took out the light pole. This time it didn’t knock off the power immediately but on Sunday morning portions of The Island went dark as work crews cut the power to repair the pole. The pole in question is on the portion of Aquarius where it takes a left curve. Slow down you guys and save our poles!

Strike Three, Yer Out
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon Someone once said, “Baseball is the key to life—if we just understood baseball better, all other questions would be answered by the baseball gods.” If baseball really is the key, then numbers and the word “out” make up the metal of that key. I can’t imagine baseball without numbers. Numbers not only tell the story of a game, they also reflect the results. Numbers even allow us to measure greatness and mediocrity. They are used to substantiate a Hall-of-Fame induction or determine which player has picked the wrong career. Numbers signify reward, as in payment, and are even used to support the game within the game, by the umpire’s count on a batter.

try their best to outsmart or outmaneuver their opponent, to tip the outcome of the game in their favor. Some teams are simply outclassed in the field of play, while others appear to be outplayed. If you’re counting, how many times did I just use some form of the word “out” in this article. It appears that the word “out” could be just as important to baseball as the use of numbers. Maybe the key to life really does lie in the understanding of numbers and the use of the word “out” in baseball. All I know is that when it’s over for me, I never want to hear, “Strike
Numbers Everywhere Numbers are also used to measure one team against another, both today and yesterday. Numbers are even found on the back and fronts of some player’s jerseys, to identify them from other players. There was a time when no numbers or only numbers with no names were worn on the uniform. Your seats at the ballpark are numbered and match the numbers on your ticket stub. Your food and drinks come with a perceived numbered value, as do programs and parking. The bases are numbered, and outfield fences are labeled with numbers used to measure distance. Players’ positions are given numbers to transcribe the game onto scorecards. Scorecards are used to store these numbers, and box scores reflect this process. Baseball stories are told using numbers, as TV and radio announcers relay the numbers of the game to the fans. As you can see, baseball and numbers could be one and the same. Without one, there is no other. It’s impossible to even talk baseball without using numbers.
By Dotson Lewis Special to the Island Moon “A-Rod” has been getting all of the headlines, but this is the inside story on baseball’s PED (Performance Enhancing Drugs) problem. In January 2004, Major League Baseball announced a new drug policy which included random, off-season testing and 10-day suspensions for first-time offenders, 30-days for second-time offenders, 60-days for thirdtime offenders, and one year for fourth-time offenders, all without pay, in an effort to curtail performance-enhancing drug use in professional baseball. This policy strengthened baseball’s pre-existing ban on controlled substances, including steroids, which was in effect since 1991.
Of the 67 players suspended, 29 were from the United States, 20 from the Dominican Republic, 11 from Venezuela, three from Cuba, two each from Puerto Rico, and Mexico, and one each from Australia, Colombia, Japan, and Spain. In December 2009, Sports Illustrated named Baseball’s steroid scandal of performanceenhancing drugs as the number one sports story of the decade of the 2000s Dotson’s Note: The following is an article by my good friend Jim Tunney (Retired NFL Refererr .

“For its one, two, three strikes, you’re out,” is the most important line in the song, “Take Me out to the Ballgame.” There’s that word “out” again. Players are punched out, put out, thrown out, or struck out, at every turn. Fly-outs, popped out or lined out are used to describe the results of hitters. “Fouled out,” “out of play” and “out of bounds” can also be used by announcers to describe the game. The biggest explosion of the usage of the word “out” has paralleled the frequency of home runs hit. “Its outa’ here,” “He hit it out of the park” or “This one’s hit out of sight” are all used to describe the long ball. Players sit in a dugout when they are not in the outfield. A good pitcher will have an out pitch and will occasionally pitch out, to stop the running game. Managers are sometimes thrown out of a game by the umpires, and pitchers are sometimes yanked out of a game by managers. Three outs signify the inning is over, and twenty-seven outs per side ends the game. Pitches are sometimes thrown outside the strike zone for balls, while umps throw baseballs out of play when damaged. Rain-outs are part of the game except in a dome stadium, and the most exciting play may be the tag out at home plate. Fans will cry out when a call goes against their team. Outbursts from players sometimes occur in the heat of the battle, when a player is hit by a pitch. Managers

“After further review...Much has been written about various athletes (and teams) who have cheated to win! Biogenesis of Americais is the name of the defunct Florida lab that supplied the fourteen players (including 2011 NL MVP Ryan Braun) recently suspended by Major League Baseball for using performanceenhancing drugs (PEDs). “Genesis” is defined as “the origin or the beginning of something”. Hopefully, it will designate the beginning of the end of PED use by athletes. Unfortunately, the opinion here is that it won’t. Players will continue to cheat to win. However,
Evasion has consistently stayed one step ahead of detection. All the currently suspended athletes took and passed scheduled drug tests; they have been disciplined because they were named in records supplied to MLB by lab owner Anthony Bosch. New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, the highest-paid player implicated, is the only one appealing his suspension. A-Rod’s suspension is for 211 games, which covers the remainder of the 2013 MLB season and all of 2014. 211? The number might well have been 9-11, given the ardor with which Rodriquez tried to cover his tracks. The implication of “emergency” should not be overlooked here. This expose is almost as rotten as the 1919 Black Sox scandal that shook baseball’s integrity to the core. There needs to be a warning to all athletes that cheating to win betrays the sport. Especially when, as in A-Rod’s case, there was genuine God-given talent to begin with. Rodriquez possesses the right of appeal according to the MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players’ union and the league. A CBA is a necessary element in any union/league mutual understanding. But to insist on, and be granted, the privilege of playing while under suspension seems farcical. Perhaps money is a concern to A-Rod. Huh? He signed a 10-year contract worth $275 million in 2013. Surely, he has banked some of that! The Yankees will owe him millions no matter how the situation is resolved. Hopefully he can get by till then. Will the 211 become a 9-1-1 wake-up call to other athletes?” Your thoughts/comments/concerns will be appreciated. Please Email or call. dlewis1@stx.rr.com Land Line: 361-949-7681 Cell: 530-748-8475

and happily, many MLB players have become outspoken opponents of chemical cheating. Hooray, for them! Are they a strong enough voice to hold sway with the players’ union? Will we ever arrive at a status quo governed by an athletic code of conduct that flatly rejects PEDs?

The complete story on baseball’s biggest headache since the Black Sox Scandal.
The policy was to be reviewed in 2008, but under pressure from the U.S. Congress, on November 15, 2005, players and owners agreed to tougher penalties; a 50-game suspension for a first offense, a 100-game suspension for a second, and a lifetime ban for a third.
Now for the other part of that key; the word “out” is used far more than its opposite, “safe,” in baseball. How difficult would it be to describe the game if the word “out” had never been invented? The word “out” can be used as an adverb, adjective, or even a noun, in the game of baseball. Let’s start with the umpires. “Yer out,” is probably the most often heard phrase in the game. “He’s out,” “It’s an out,” or “He’s called out” are all forms of the umpire’s jargon.

Building A Wooden Boat at Farley Boat Works
By Joe Calvey, Sr. Editor’s note: This is the second part of the series. As summer 2013 arrived and our boat building adventure at Farley Boat Works in Port Aransas drew closer I grew more and more apprehensive. In wood shop as a high school student I had the most difficult time building a simple three piece book holder. When the guidance counselor
parts, refitted the gunwales as we held them with all of our hand strength as the stainless steel screws were drilled into place. We had arrived. With a shared experience my son and I were now officially one step closer to building and launching our very own Farley boat. We had shown up a few days early to assist on other boat projects to acclimate ourselves and to be a part of the process of helping other boat builders achieve their dream as well.
Joey Calvey poses with the three transoms he built during his first three days boat building. reviewed my vocational evaluation test results I do not recall being pointed in the direction of any of the skilled crafts. In spite of this as an adult I would wander the aisles of the home improvement stores buying tools I hoped someday to use a second time. My favorite websites usually have something to do with wooden boats though.
Farley Boat Works The Farley Boat Works of Port Aransas, an offshoot of the Port Aransas Museum, was established in 2011 and I wandered in a few months later. There I discovered local men engaged in the fine art of wooden boat building. Certain I would be totally out of place I steeled myself for the disappointment that was surely in my immediate future. Instead I found a group of helpful friendly
Darrell Lynn is from UP… or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He had recently attended a wooden boat building program to continue his own growth in the craft. A former body builder who still carries himself with the quiet machismo of someone who has spent long hours lifting weights and running his own gym, Darrell’s easygoing manner makes him a great shop master. He can also yell out instructions louder than any shop machine that happens to be running while he is talking.
Sun Tzu and the art of boat building One of my favorite quotations from the Art of War by Sun Tzu, a Chinese general who died more than 1000 years ago is “In the midst of chaos there is also opportunity.” I took that opportunity to go help Joey and Pat.
Joey Calvey and shop manager Darrell Lynn inspect front stem.
Pat is a descendant of the original Farley brothers who built tarpon boats and Texas coastal skiffs for decades right there in the very shop in which I stood. He is committed to the concept of the Farley Boat Works goal of establishing the shop as a respected non-profit center of wooden boat building. So as Joey and Pat finished milling the boards the three of us

Pat Farley, a board member of the Port Aransas Historical Association and owner of a local jewelry shop, The Silver King, smiled as we appeared to be taken back by the direction. “Let’s take this over there.” he nodded to the radial arm saw. With the nearest tape measure in hand and my son closely watching I marked three sections to cut from a piece of timber that surely cost a pretty penny. A few moments later after a quick lesson on how to adjust the angle of the saw blade I grabbed the handle, depressed the trigger, said a little prayer and cut the lumber. It was at that moment a voice inside my head reminded me to measure twice and cut once. “Ah, that was a little late.” I said out loud. Pat and Joey just looked at me.
Having managed to successfully chop our first three boards Pat Joey Calvey sands parts to build a transom. and Joey headed over to the planer to run them through. people. So with confidence I do not normally The planner takes the roughness off the board have when approaching the simplest of home making them easier to work with and giving repairs I signed up my then 16 year old son, them a nice smooth finish. I would mention how we would be building a boat there. The questions were always the same. “Do you know how to build a boat?” My answer was

his instructions were then I would have followed them and been able to write them down now. But after his words buzzed through the air along with the sound of Joey and Pat operating the planer I just looked at Darrell and nodded.
“OK, Joey, we are going to grab some of these boards here and start getting some transoms built.” Darrell called out as Burt and Beverly began sanding their project. Before we could react Darrell began pulling out a huge 20 foot long mahogany board that took several of us to lift up. “OK, get me three pieces 36” inches long” he continued before heading off to check on something in one Joey Calvey (L) Burt Moorehouse (C) Darrel Lynn of the storage units.

walked over to the work benches where Pat set us on the first step of Darrell’s instructions.
Over the next three days we continued to work Burt and Beverly’s boat, construct three front stems and three transoms for our boat and two future boat builds. We learned how to mix epoxy, spread it on a boat’s keel and cover it with fiberglass. We were sanding, gluing and screwing boards together with more confidence as we went along. We remembered to measure twice, cut once and pre-fit before gluing. We learned to scarff. What is scarffing? Scarffing plywood is sanding back the layers from one edge 6-8 inches exposing the underlying layers at an angle so two pieces can be glued together to create one long sheet of plywood.
We would start at 9 a.m., break for lunch - oh, scarffing is also a term for eating pizza fast but our lunches were relaxed and talk centered around building boats after which we would return, break for a siesta, return and finish about 9 p.m. and head for dinner where we drew a few looks for being covered in wood stains and probably stinking. Loving it.

marylou@baxterbrooks.com In working on the article about Real Estate transactions that have occurred in the first six months of 2013, it became apparent that a large percentage of sales involved homes built in 2012/2013, on Padre Island. 28% of the 163 detached, single family residences were newly built homes. This is a natural progression, based on the number of lots that were sold, on Padre Island, in the first half of 2012. Why is that significant? The answer to me, means it represents new growth. One owner did not leave, to be replaced by another owner, of the property. These homes represent a new entity entirely. In trying to research the impact of new home construction, it is difficult to find accurate and concrete information.
Jobs According to the National Association of Homebuilders, Each new single-family home built, creates three new jobs. Those are jobs in actual construction, but also in manufacturing components such as light fixtures, H/A units, producing construction materials such as lumber and concrete and service jobs from delivery drivers to real estate agents, lawyers, closing and insurance agents and home builders, themselves. If you combine the construction surge on The Island, with the ongoing Port Construction, Schlitterbahn Construction and Eagle Ford Shale Construction, it is not a miracle that Texas and the Coastal Bend are growing at a phenomenal rate. Now we enter the “chicken and egg” cycle. More jobs create the demand for more housing and more housing creates more jobs…….
Tax Revenue The increase in tax revenue can be seen at all levels of government. Income withholdings from wages flows directly to the Federal coffers in Washington, D. C. and helps to fund Social Security, unemployment, Medicare and Medicaid. Profits generated by business owners also represent taxable income. Sales tax collections benefit the State of Texas, the City of Corpus Christi and all levels of government in between. Fees for Building Permits and Utility taps also benefit the City. Of course, the obvious plus is additional revenue generated by Property Taxes. To be fair, that is not all surplus dollars. Growth does increase the city budget. Education, Police and Fire Protection must be provided to all new residents, along with water, sewer, trash and perhaps, gas service. The NAHB estimates that each new single-family home generates $90,000 in government revenue - $67, 000 in Federal taxes and $23,000 in state and local taxes.
Future Growth I have attended three economic seminars presented by the Stewart Title economist and two Research Economists from the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. In every instance, the population projections for Texas are staggering. One article provided by the Real Estate Center, stated there were 1,457 foreign firms in Texas, in 2010, employing 5% of the total private workforce. Texas ranks third in the nation in number or foreign firms. California and New York are number one and two. The new companies investing in the Coastal Bend contribute new capital and technology that can lead to higher wages and productivity. However, that does leave us vulnerable to foreign

There seems to be some confusion on just how many times the City picks up brush. They reduced the number of times for collecting brush to only 5 times for the year – not every month.
Set-out times were also reduced to only 9 days. The next set out starts August 31 and pickup will be September 9. This time it will include heavy brush so you can set out more than just brush clippings.
exchange rates that fluctuate, especially the Euro, Yen and Yuan. Texas sends manufactured goods to 222 countries. Mexico is our largest trading partner, but Brazil, the Netherlands and China are steadily increasing. Petroleum and coal products make up the largest export category, followed by basic chemicals, resin and synthetic rubber/fiber exports. All of the favorable qualities, border location, sea access, natural oil and gas resources and relatively low labor costs, can be found in the Coastal Bend area. It is predicted that Texas will continue to lead in population diversity and growth, with half of future growth coming from foreign and domestic immigrants moving to Texas. People require housing….do the math. Being informed is a good thing….
Early setouts mean the City will most likely issue a citation and along with that comes a fine to the property owner. It is especially upsetting for a lot owner who does not live here to receive a fine when they don’t have any trees on their vacant lot. The City Code Enforcement person tries to locate the offending homeowner by checking to try to identify where the cuttings have come from. But, we could really use some cooperation! We are receiving more complaints about houses with high weeds. Again, City Code Enforcement is able to issue citations for these, but we are finding some of these properties are vacant and lending institutions have started foreclosure. The City does contact the lenders and starts the process, but it takes time to get these cleaned up.

We also keep after the builders to clean up their job sites. Most of them are good about keeping things picked up, but we still have a few who need constant reminding. The point of this article is to try to once again educate our residents. I think we all want to have our Island look better and these types of issues make the place look bad. If we all work on these things together, we will have a much nicer looking Island.

I’m dying… If it gets any hotter, I think my head will explode. I’ve come to think it’s the Winter Texans who’ve got it figured out. It was in the 70’s in Minnesota last week. Thank the good Lord for frosty beverages!
Brennen Leigh and Noel McKay will play Shorty’s on Saturday.
Stewart Mann and Statesboro Revue played Giggity’s last Saturday.
Pick of the week… Dust Devils … My PICK OF THE WEEK goes to Noel of course, the big, big show Joe Ely was McKay and Brennen Leigh (Austin, TX) out at Sharkey’s for another installment who will be playing Shorty’s on Saturday of the Port Aransas Summer Fest concert night. They play all original tunes and their Ruben V will play the Back Porch on series. I got to Sharkey’s in time to catch songwriting is clever and engaging. Both Friday. most of the opening act, Larry Joe of them play amazingly fluid guitars and Taylor (Stephenville, TX) and all of Ely’s their harmonies blend perfectly.
