Island on the Move! It was a banner week for concrete pouring as crews continue work on the wave pool at the Schlitterbahn Beach Country Resort. The river around the site is now cut and the ticket booths are in place at what will be the park entrance next to the Padre Isles Country Club which is in the process of being fitted with a second story. The wet weather of late has not slowed down progress and the park is on schedule for its opening next summer. Meanwhile, over on Nemo Court crews were also busy this week pouring cement on the 24unit townhome development due to be open for overnight stay by next summer. We may have to change the official Island Bird to the Concrete Crane before long. Its mating call can be the pounding of hammers as they drive nails on the flood of new houses under construction.

The ticket booths are in place at Schlitterbahn.

The Island is booming friends.

Crews were also pouring concrete at the site of the new townhouse development on Nemo Court.

Five days later, during batting practice in Philly, Ruth managed to get hold of several pitches which sailed far out into the daylight with home-run distance. He hit three balls so far out of the Baker Bowl over the right field fence, you could pick them up on your way home. Now, to be fair, the Baker Bowl was a small park by today’s standards, seating only 18,800. It had been built in 1887 in an urban area which only provided 280 feet down the right-field line and 300 feet to the right centerfield fence. In order to make it more challenging, a 60 foot high wall was built. Using the same thought process as Boston’s Fenway Park “Green Monster,” this wall became known as the “Baker Wall.” A large sign for the Lifebuoy Soap Company proclaiming “The Phillies use Lifebuoy,” hung on this wall. A story told by Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Joe Garagiola, tells that one day someone placed a smaller homemade sign on the same wall that said, “But the Phillies still stink.” The Phillies stopped using the Baker Bowl in 1938, but it survived another twelve years before being destroyed in 1950. Ruth had wanted to quit baseball earlier. He was tired, hurting and wanted to manage a ball club. The Braves had only won 9 out of 32 games and Ruth’s skills were fading fast. The Braves would finish with a 38-115 record, one of the worst in the history of Major League baseball. Not only did Ruth’s hitting stink, but his fielding was unacceptable. Ruth was supposed to be paid $35,000 for the year and promised a chance to manage the club in 1936,

“I’m Through For Keeps”

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon It was Memorial Day, a Thursday, and May 30, 1935. The Baker Bowl, home of the Philadelphia Phillies, was packed with fans and the excitement of a doubleheader against the Boston Braves. There was also one other reason. A tall, overweight magician with a bat was taking his hacks in the batting cage before game time. At the age of 40, he was only hitting .183 and never seemed to look happy in a Boston Braves uniform, but batting average was not this fellow’s forte. The fans came to see him hit long and high, gargantuan home runs. That’s what made him different from the rest. He had started the 1935 season off with a bang by getting four hits in his first two games, including a home run. In fact, he was batting .400 after his first five games. Then it happened. He struggled with only two hits over the next month and was hitting .153 when he arrived in Pittsburgh with the team on May 25, 1935. That day would be an incredible day for the “Babe.” That’s right, George Herman Ruth, also called the “Sultan of Swat,” would go 4-for-4 with three monster home runs and six RBI’s. Just like in the movies, that would have been the day to retire; but he didn’t.

but owner Eddie Fuchs actually wanted Ruth to invest his salary in the team and had no intentions of promoting Ruth to manager. Fuchs was broke and had misled Ruth to increase attendance. After that glorious day in Pittsburgh, Ruth never recorded another hit. Ruth struck out three times in Cincinnati before heading to Philadelphia. In what would be his final game, Ruth trotted to left field after hitting a weak grounder to first base in the first inning, for an out. With the bases loaded with Phillies, Lou Chiozza hit a soft liner to left. Ruth tried to make a shoestring catch, but failed. The ball rolled all the way to the wall. Three runs scored for the Phillies and, at the end of the first inning, Ruth tucked his glove into his back pocket and walked to the visitor’s clubhouse in centerfield. He was done. Ruth later told writer Bob Considine he had pulled a “charley horse” on the missed catch. The fans stood and applauded as he left the field. Only Ruth knew his time was over. Hal Lee replaced him in leftfield. Three days later, Ruth returned to Boston with the team. Before Ruth could meet with Fuchs to tell him “I’m through for keeps,” a reporter told the Babe he had been fired. And so, it was over. A baseball god in flannel was through. Ruth never got to do the one thing he really wanted, to manage a baseball team. The question everyone asked was “How can Ruth manage a team when he can’t even manage himself?” Babe Ruth never played baseball again, but he will be remembered forever. Eddie Fuchs, a forgotten owner, lost control of the Braves when he was forced to sell the team to his partner, Charlie Adams, on July 31, 1935. In the world of baseball, Fuchs would never be heard from again. Andy Purvis is a local author. A Latitude With an Attitude

by Devorah Fox By Maybeth Christiansen

WARNING! This column may contain information you do not want to here! Island tipping point There has been an increase in mailboxes being knocked down and the port-a-potties at construction sites being tipped over. Parents, it is time to talk to your teenagers! Destroying other people’s property is never acceptable. Obviously, some young people have not been taught acceptable behavior or parents are not aware of what their teenagers are doing but it would be a good idea to have this discussion around the dinner table.

Traffic jamming Another area which needs to be talked about is the drop-off time at Seashore Learning Center on Encantada. Parents be aware of what you are doing! That area is especially congested with young children riding their bikes to school, dog walkers, people just out for their morning walk, people going to work and then add in your getting out of your car to walk your child into school! I know Seashore provided you with a traffic plan before school started. Take another look at it and follow the suggestions. We do not want to see any child or parent get hit.

Dial back to Island Time There are several more traffic issues. SLOW DOWN! All of the streets except for Whitecap which are west of Park Road 22 have a posted

Harte Public Library will offer a special program for families on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 6:15 p.m. Families are invited to celebrate Halloween, autumn, and “International Observe the Moon Night” with music, crafts, face painting, and a view of the moon through telescopes. speed limit of 30 miles per hour. Whitecap is 35 miles per hour. That doesn’t mean just because there is open road in front of you that you can go as fast as you want to. Please obey the speed limit signs! When backing out of driveways or even pulling out, look both ways before going into the street. Watch for bike riders and children. I’ve heard of a bike rider who has had several close calls from (I hate to say it because I’m in that age category) older women backing out of their driveways and not looking before they backed out.

Weed whacking The office, the City and the mowing companies are all well aware that the weeds are high! The rain was wonderful, but all of the vacant lots are way overgrown. The mowers are out there doing their best to get the lots cut. We have about 1000 vacant lots so it only stands to reason that they are not all going to be cut the same day. Patience, please.

“Lattitude with An Attitude.” Doesn’t that describe Port Aransas perfectly? It’s also the theme for the fourth annual “Wings Over Port Aransas” weekend long party hosted by the Parrot Heads of Port Aransas. The PHOPA is one of 200-plus clubs in the international Parrot Heads In Paradise, Inc. “Parrot Heads” are fans of the singer/songwriter/author Jimmy Buffett whose music and books celebrate the life of tropical island leisure. You’ve probably spotted PHOPA members around town: grown men and women in Hawaiian shirts or coconut–shell bras, board shorts or grass skirts, funny hats, sunglasses and flip flops with a Landshark beer or margarita in hand. You may have seen them tossing beads from a Port Aransas Mardi Gras pirate ship float or caroling on a flamingo-festooned vessel in the holiday Lighted Boat Parade. These high-spirited folks in their bright colored beachwear look like just a bunch of non-stop party animals with nothing more on

Gutless canals Fisher people, please, quit throwing your fish carcasses into the canal! Our canals have a problem with water quality and there just aren’t enough critters in the canals to eat that stuff. It takes years for the stuff to decay all the while making the area fertile for the organisms which cause brown tide. It is a cycle and you do not need to contribute the “fertilizer” for the cycle.

their minds than holding down a lounge chair. Don’t get the wrong idea. All that merrymaking is “party with a purpose.” Around the world, Parrot Head clubs hold numerous fundraisers that benefit a multitude of charities such as cancer or Alzheimer’s research, environmental causes or the March of Dimes. The PHoPA is no exception. One of the club’s charities is the Animal Rehabilitation Keep, otherwise known as the ARK, which rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured sea animals and shorebirds. The PHoPA also donates to the Helping Hands Food Pantry. Wings 2013, “Latitude with an Attitude,” will be October 4 through 6, 2013. The Sandcastle Condominiums will serve as “party central” and rooms are available at a discount for Wings guests. The weekend-long party will start with a Friday evening sunset bay cruise followed by a beach bonfire and cookout. Weather permitting, on Saturday at 10 a.m. ARK director Tony Amos will release one or more rehabilitated turtles ready to be returned back into the ocean. Saturday afternoon entertainment includes a pub crawl in the aforementioned land-based pirate ships and features a shopping poker run. Shoppers with a Wings 2013 badge who visit participating merchants like Gratitude, Fish on the Line, Fish Tales and Cypress Tree will receive a special discount and a poker chip. The chip can be redeemed at the Wings headquarters for a playing card. The top three winning poker hands earn prizes. Jerry Diaz and Hannah’s Reef will provide the live music for the Saturday night dance and banquet. At the Saturday night party, guests will have a chance to buy raffle tickets and can bid on a variety of unique items in the silent auction. Drinks are available at evening events for a donation or Wings guests may bring their own beverage. The weekend ends with a continental brunch on Sunday. The $55 “Wings Over Port A: Latitude with an Attitude” registration fee includes an event t-shirt, personalized name tag and admission to all the events. Add an additional $15 to attend the Friday sunset cruise which is limited to the first 90 who sign up. Checks should be made out to PHOPA and mailed to Parrot Heads of Port Aransas, P. O. Box 914, Port Aransas, Texas, 78373.

The “Winds Over Port Aransas” fundraisers wouldn’t be half the success they are if not for the sponsors that help put on the party. At this writing, 42 generous sponsors are participating, one of which is the Island Queen II bay cruiser boat, the site of the Friday evening sunset cruise.

running cars between Port Aransas and Aransas Pass. When the ferry service got larger 20car boats, the older smaller boats went up for auction. Billy’s father got word about the auction from his friend Melvin Littleton, then the supervisor of ferry operations. The Gaskins bought two vessels. One is no longer in service but the other became the Island Queen II.

With 2,000 square feet of deck space the 33-foot-wide boat is definitely big enough to live on but Gaskins converted it for fishing trips and parties by closing off the ends and adding the upper deck, rail and seating. The vessel is Coast-Guard certified. It’s inspected every year and every other year is “hauled out,” taken out of the water for an inspection. Sometimes ultrasound is used to test the thickness of the metal. A program of making repairs indicated by the inspections helps to keep the boat ship-shape.

The captain knows all the hot spots where fish are likely to be found. The crew which usually consists of three members but can be as large as four or five assists anglers with bating hooks and netting the catch and are ready with fishing tips and instructions so even novices can have a successful outing.

If fishing sounds like too much work, passengers can simply relax and enjoy the cruise. The Island Queen II is available for private charters, is licensed for up to 99 passengers and catering is available.

The Island Queen II departs from Woody’s Sports Center three times daily. Children 12 & under are half price! For reservations or more information, call (361) 749-6969.

Yours truly is also contributing to “Wings Over Port Aransas.” I’m auctioning off a character from my latest fiction work-in-progress. “Naked Came the Sharks,” is a contemporary thriller about murder and mayhem in the Texas Coastal Bend. The highest bidder at the “Wings Over Port Aransas” silent auction will get to give his or her name to a character in the book which is slated for a December, 2013 release. So when you come to party at the “Latitude with an Attitude,” be sure to stop by the silent auction and place your bid to be a character. (Only bids placed at the Wings 2013 will be eligible.) I’ll see you there.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Independent Thieves…

Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel and Dale Watson, and is the first woman to hold the prestigious position. Shelley seems to have taken a shine to the little stage at Shorty’s and really appears to feel right at home. All I heard after her show was how much everyone really loved her. She’s the real deal and will most certainly be back soon.

Rusty Brothers… Melissa Brooke will play Giggity’s on Saturday.. feeling very old. But when they started to play, I found myself really digging their sound. The teens knew all the words and sang along. I just wandered back to the “parent’s table” with the other old folks to let the kids play. The whole thing was over by 8:30 or 9:00. It was very wholesome.

The Independent Thieves played Shorty’s last Friday night. I have come to adore the Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX)… I really do. They have stolen my heart. I guess I’ve seen them play a half dozen times or more now and think they just get better and better every time. In case you don’t know, the “Thieves” are a megatalented young string band with an impressive line-up of multi-instrumentalists that just happen to have an excellent taste in music (in my humble opinion). I mean, they play the obligatory Wagon Wheel and Copperhead Road but they also dig deep into the history of folk music and play stuff that gives me hope for the younger generation. When’s the last time you heard a group of twenty-something’s play Wayfaring Stranger… I rest my case. They also have an arsenal of originals plus a bunch of crowd pleasers in their bag of tricks such as Dylan, Petty, The Band, Van the Man but with the sweet, sweet accompaniment of fiddle, mandolin and acoustic guitar and amazing vocal harmonies. And, they’ve expanded. They now have a female thief on stand-up bass and back-up vocals by the name of Savannah Johnson (daughter of local country artist Tyler McCumber). Good choice guys! They’ll be back at Shorty’s on October 26 … which by the way, couldn’t be a more perfect room for them. Trust me. The Independent Thieves: Owen Fitzsimmons (fiddle/ vocals), Garrett Wieland (acoustic guitar/mandolin/vocals), David King (mandolin/acoustic guitar/vocals) and the new gal, Savannah Johnson, (stand-up bass/vocals) is a band well worth exploring. I’m pretty sure they will steal your heart, too!

The Rusty Brothers played the Back Porch last Friday. I saw a couple of new acts at the Back Porch this weekend. On Friday, the Rusty Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) played a big open party for Corpus Christi’s King High School’s 40th reunion. The place was packed and I’m guessing there was some connection between the band and this class, because, although the majority of the patrons were much older, they sure seemed to dig these guys. I’d never seen (or heard) of the Rusty Brothers before, but they put on a good show… very country and danceable.

Alpha Rev…

Alpha Rev played Brewster Street last Monday.

Shelley King… One of the purest voices this planet has ever known, Shelley King (Austin, TX), played Shorty’s on Saturday night. I’ve been privy to Miss King’s extraordinary talents for a good many years now and can’t emphasize enough Shelley King played Shorty’s how strong this lady is. last Saturday Like I said, she can sing the phone book and make night. Aretha blush… that’s no exaggeration. Shelley waltzed into this gig on the hills of a 7,000 mile tour which she did alone. She knocked ‘em dead from the top to the bottom and showed up on our doorsteps looking like a fresh new penny. This lady is a born entertainer. She combines a blend of blues, soul, R&B, gospel, bluegrass, country and rock which has won this Austin darling an array of accolades, including the 2008 title of Texas State Musician. She shares the honor with such acts as Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver,

An incredibly polite crowd of teens at the Alpha Rev concert. On Monday, I jumped in with my pals Woody Lawson and his lovely wife Susan and headed into Corpus to see the alternative band, Alpha Rev (Austin, TX) at Brewster Street. This was a four piece group: acoustic and electric guitars, keyboard and hand drums (the apparent new trend in minimal percussion). I’d say there were maybe 200 people at this show and the majority of them were in the 13-17 age range with lots of parents standing around. As soon as the band took the stage, about 50 teenagers marched to the front of the stage (in an incredibly organized and polite manner) and sat on the floor directly in front of the band. It was adorable… a kind of anti-mosh pit. I was standing right in front of this group trying to get my photos and

Green Light Pistol looks pretty interesting. They get my PICK OF THE WEEK.
