STATE Hurricane Preparedness Put Your Plan In Place By Todd Hunter, District 32

The hurricane season is now beginning in South Texas, and it is important to get your plan in place. Being prepared for hurricane season can help keep your family stay safe. The season officially began on June 1 and will end on November 30th. It is during this time that most of the tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic Basin. Among these are the ones that tend to pose a threat to the United States.

an emergency. It is also important to have a good first aid kit with medicines and prescription drugs ready and organized.

Nueces County is included among the fourteen Tier One, Texas coastal counties along the Gulf of Mexico. This means that these counties are most likely to be affected if a hurricane makes landfall. It is important that our area, as well as all Texans, prepare for hurricanes by staying informed, creating a disaster plan and following necessary steps to keep their families safe and secure.

In addition to getting your family, pets and homes safe and prepared, there are various state websites for hurricane preparedness and evacuation, as well as telephone hotlines. The National Flood Insurance is a pre-disaster flood program designed to reduce flood disasters. The National Flood Insurance program can be called at 1-888-379-9531. Some important contacts include Statewide Road Conditions which can be called at 1-800-452-9292 and going to Texas Online - The Official Portal of Texas at www. texasonline.com.

When hurricanes make landfall or get close to land, they can affect the lives of thousands of Texans along the coast, as well as across the state of Texas. There are many helpful steps on being prepared in case of a hurricane. Some of these tips include putting together and establishing a family disaster response plan. A family disaster response plan includes planning for the hazards and complications that can originate from a tropical event. Depending on your geographical proximity to the ocean, your vulnerability to storm surges, flooding and wind related actions should be reviewed. You should locate places in your house that can function as potential safe rooms, and also determine where to store items if a hurricane-related hazard develops. It is important that families determine evacuation and escape routes from your home along with places to meet in case of an emergency. Don’t forget to plan for taking care of your pets in case of evacuation. In addition, it is important that families create a disaster supply kit. A disaster supply kit can include blankets, pillows, seasonal clothing and special items for infants and the elderly. Other important items like flashlights, batteries, telephones, radios and sufficient tools in case of

Living along the coastline also means preparing for hurricanes by retrofitting your home. It is important to strengthen the outside of your home so that wind and objects are less likely to tear openings in your roof or walls. Some people may want to find out about flood insurance.

You can also go to my website, which will provide you links, websites to various sources for hurricane preparedness, planning for an evacuation, tips on hurricane preparedness as well as state and federal government resources. Also, if you are elderly or disabled and need hurricane evacuation assistance, you can call 2-1-1. This service will assist you in hurricane evacuation. If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. Please always feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or issues regarding a Texas state agency, or if you would like to contact my office regarding constituent services. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603). Rep. Hunter represents Nueces County (Part). He can be contacted at todd.hunter@house. state.tx.us or at 512-463-0672.

AARP Texas Director Says 2015 Legislative Session a Success for Older Texans The near-completed 2015 Texas legislative session is poised to deliver the most significant gains for the health and financial security of older Texans than have been realized in more than a decade, AARP Texas Director Bob Jackson said today. Citing expected passage of nursing home quality reforms, significant new state spending for home- and community-based care programs, consumer protections against surprise medical billing, and progress on a host of pocketbook issues for middle class Texans, Jackson characterized the Legislature’s work as an unequivocal success for the state’s age-50-plus population. “We’ve climbed the ladder toward making Texas a far safer place to grow older,” said Jackson. “While there is much more to do, Texas is going to be safer for seniors and the Legislature is spending resources more wisely.” The 140-day biennial legislative session is set to conclude Monday. This year, AARP, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with more than 2.2 million members over 50 in Texas and 38 million nationally, advocated for numerous bills and budget requests in the health and human services arena. AARP volunteers and staff also worked to protect consumers, and is still fighting in the final days of the session against harmful measures, such as ones backed by the powerful insurance and payday lending industries. Jackson credited the policy achievements, in part, on the public input that legislative leaders allowed. “We reached out to our members and they spoke to the Legislature,” he said. “When you create an open, honest discourse, you get much better results.” The session’s outcomes can’t be fully tallied until sine die and Gov. Greg Abbott acts on legislation. However, Jackson said he’s proud of the work AARP Texas put forth on issues like the following: • Surprise medical billing. The Legislature sent Governor Abbott SB 481 to keep

privately insured consumers from being charged expensive, out-of-network fees for medical care they receive at in-network facilities. (Medicare recipients already enjoy such protections.) SB 481 tames surprise medical billing (balance billing) by, among other steps, allowing charges of $500 or higher to be eligible for mediation. • $31 million in new spending for Homeand Community-Based Assistance. Pending final budget approval, lawmakers will wipe out a waiting list for an array of services that allow low-income seniors to get care at home rather than in nursing facilities. • Nursing Home Quality Reforms. New protections are likely for those who reside in nursing homes or get care from home health or assisted living providers. Lawmakers approved a “three-strikes” proposal by state Sen. Charles Schwertner that removes operating licenses of nursing facilities that incur three or more of the most serious violations over a 24-month period. The Legislature also is finalizing reforms that make it harder for deficient nursing homes to avoid financial penalties and strengthens state oversight of these facilities. • Medicaid Network Adequacy. Under SB 760, Texans of all ages in Medicaid managed care will enjoy greater access to medical specialists. The bill improves access to primary care and medical specialists, and it assigns financial penalties when HMOs fail to meet network standards. • Homeowners Insurance. Thousands of AARP members voiced opposition to SB 1628, an insurance bill that would have made it harder for homeowners to file claims when their property is damaged or destroyed. • Payday and auto title lending. AARP fought hard to ensure that local government ordinances that rein in high-interest charges by these lenders are not disrupted. AARP supports statewide expansion of these and other consumer protections.

84th Legislative Session in Review The Texas Senate ended the 84th Legislative session Monday, its first in 12 years under new leadership and a term that saw nine new members take office. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, newly elected last year, told members from the dais that this may have been the Senate’s finest hour. “I think we had one of the most successful, if not the most successful, Senate sessions in modern history,” he said. The Senate passed a budget, legislation doubling funding to border security, early education, and tax cuts over the past 140 days. Here’s a look at some of the key bills that will become law if signed by Governor Greg Abbott. • A $209 billion budget for 2016 and 2017 It includes more money for public education, women’s and mental health, and border security funding. It also ended diversions from the state highway fund, increasing funding to road and bridge construction and maintenance. • Tax Cuts - One bill would raise the homestead exemption from $15,000 to $25,000. Another cuts the state franchise tax by a quarter. Added up, the measures will bring nearly $5 billion in tax relief over the next two years. • Border Security - The omnibus border security bill spends $800 million for new DPS troopers, new technology and new facilities to help guard the border with Mexico. It also includes enough money to keep Texas National Guard forces on the border until DPS can take over for them. • Early education - One of Abbott’s top priorities for the session, the Governor has already signed into law a bill that will offer incentives to pre-kindergarten programs that implement accountability measures to ensure high quality. • Gun Rights - Licensed gun owners will be allowed to carry openly on their belts or in a shoulder holster. They will also be able to carry concealed handguns on public college campuses. That measure was changed to allow college presidents to designate certain areas on campus as gun free, but colleges cannot make blanket bans. • Right to Try - This bill will give people with terminal diagnoses access to experimental treatments under certain circumstances. • Fracking ordinances - Another bill already signed into law by Abbott, this bill makes

the state the ultimate authority on setting oil and gas policies in Texas. Municipalities will still exercise limited control on above ground activities with respect to noise and other nuisance abatement. • Transportation funding - Passed in the form of a resolution, this proposed law will bypass the Governor and go to voters in November. Texans will decide whether to earmark a portion of sales tax revenue to highway funding every biennium. Governor Abbott has ten days to sign or veto the laws. One question is bandied around the Capitol at the end of every session, and this year was no different: will the governor call a special session? Governor Rick Perry called 12 extra sessions in his decade as governor, but this time around lawmakers could be out of Austin all interim for the first time since 2007. One issue that could bring them back is a lawsuit on school finance currently before the state Supreme Court. Oral arguments are expected to begin this fall, and the timing and nature of the ruling will determine whether the Legislature will be back in session to deal with the issue next year or if it will wait until they meet in regular session again in January 2017.

D-Day June 6, 1944 By Dotson Lewis Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s Note: In June 1944, I was 15 years old and working at my first job (except for paper routes) away from the home place. I was a “soda jerk” in a drug store working between 50 and 60 hours a week for a whopping 10 bucks a week. I had my eye on a “Victory Bicycle,” so I could ride to work instead of walking 2 ½ miles (uphill) to work every day. We kept the radio on all of the time listening to the war news, mostly at that time it was about the invasion of Europe. My thanks to Michael Evans, Jeffrey Grey, Peter Jennings, John Besemeres, Nic Stuart and Rod Lyon for their contributions to this article.

The critical decision The single most important decision of WWII was announced on 29 March 1941, almost eight months before the United States actually entered the war. Secret discussions had been proceeding between American and British staff officers since January. Although the imminent invasion threat to the United Kingdom had passed, London was suffering nightly bombing raids, Rommel had just begun his offensive in North Africa, and Yugoslavia and Greece would fall within a month. Adolf Hitler was triumphant everywhere. Winston Churchill’s policy of resolute defiance was appearing increasingly pointless. Facing political attack at home and military defeat in the field, pressure for a political settlement mounted. The British leader needed a reason to believe he might be eventually victorious. The outcome of the staff talks gave the PM a reason to hold on.

The two brothers were transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS. The younger brother was being treated for minor injuries. The older brother was last reported in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. Alberto Martinez (09/23/1969) was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault. Officers also recovered the knife used in the attack. came down rather closer to the English Channel than the inner-German border. Few days in any century can match the strategic significance of 6 June 1944.

The historical significance of D-Day We look at D-Day rather differently now than was the case even 30 or 40 years ago. The end of the Cold War and several decades of research in the former Soviet archives have rectified the tendency in the 1950s and 1960s to accord battles like Alamein and Normandy a primacy and pivotal status that they didn’t and don’t deserve. We now recognize what was always true: the German Army was destroyed on the Eastern Front by the Soviets who incurred unimaginable casualties in the process. The bulk of the German Army fought in the east and the bulk of German casualties were incurred there. That correction shouldn’t diminish the importance of the return of the Western allies to the European continent. It was vital that the Allies take a full part in the defeat of the Nazis on land, and the ensuing 12 months would involve much hard and sometimes desperate fighting and relatively heavy casualties. Films like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers have reduced the scale on which we imagine D-Day and have tended to focus on it as an individual or small-group experience. It was both of those things, but it was also an enormous, complex and high-risk operation where the outcome was by no means certain. Its importance symbolically, strategically and operationally shouldn’t be underestimated.

D-Day 70 years on

What made D-Day important wasn’t what happened on 6 June—far more crucial was the decision that it would, eventually, occur. That was the only action that held any hope of an Allied return to the continent and, in turn, the eventual prospect of victory. It was the prospect of D-Day that convinced Churchill he would, eventually, win and thus kept the Empire in the war. And later, although the possibility that Hitler and Joseph Stalin could ever have brokered a separate peace was always remote, the pledge of eventual invasion helped bolster Russian resolve, ensuring it would keep fighting. D-Day was vital. Not simply because of what it meant militarily but something far more important— a promise to keep the grand alliance together.

The strategic meaning of D-Day Seventy years on, we tend to think of 6 June as the anniversary of an especially important event in WWII. For those of us who weren’t there on the actual day in 1944, the opening minutes of Saving Private Ryan give some sense of what it might’ve been like. First, by early 1944 two authoritarian great powers—Germany and the Soviet Union— were locked in a titanic struggle on the Eurasian continent. Democracy had been largely eradicated from Western Europe, and so from the continent that had been described as the World Island. D-Day was about more than defeating fascism; it was about the reseeding of democratic regimes on the Eurasian landmass. Second, in terms of the war itself, D-Day should be seen as a roll of the dice on a global scale. Given the allies’ strategy was to win the war in Europe before turning their attention to Japan, the future course of the war in two theatres rested on its outcome. A setback at Normandy would’ve had echoes in Australia’s own region. And third, we should see D-Day in its broader historical setting. True, if the D-Day landings had failed, the allies could’ve regrouped and tried again. The continental United States was still largely free of war’s damage. But a D-Day that failed in 1944 might’ve seen nuclear weapons used in a second attempt. And Eurasia in the meantime might’ve fallen more extensively under the control of the other authoritarian great power—an Iron Curtain that

Remnants of prefabricated docks installed at Normandy Beach after the invasion. If any single day can credibly be presented as the defining moment of a century, it’s 6 June 1944, the day of the allied landings at Normandy. In a strategic sense Germany was well on the way to defeat at this stage of the war. The Wehrmacht had been broken in the east and was retreating, overwhelmed by Russian numbers and weather; German cities had been smashed by constant allied bombing and the Luftwaffe reduced to tiny pockets of resistance. What remained of German military power in France was significant but not of a scale that defeat could be resisted for long. But Normandy wasn’t a side show. Had the invasion been blunted the Soviet Union might well have been able to extend its control over much of Western Europe. As it was the successful allied landings announced America’s arrival as the world’s leading power, created the basis for Europe’s future wealth and stability, and established the claim that democracy and international collaboration would ultimately overcome totalitarianism. On the 70th anniversary of the landings we’re sure to mark those strategic achievements as the founding moment of all that came after in terms of the global balance of power and the western model of organizing societies. But even the largest wars are no more than the sum of individual experiences. The millions of individuals who survived the war were scarred but stronger. The world is a poorer place for the passing of this tough-minded, softly-spoken generation. Dotson’s Other Note: I have many friends, some of whom have since passed, who were involved in the Normandy Landing. Where you or any of your friends involved? If so I would love to hear from you. Study of Injuries Suffered During Catch & Release of Red Snapper Boosted by Fisheries Innovation Grant

Show us your Snappers!

A 15

The Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation (CSSC) at the Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has been awarded a federal Fisheries Innovation Grant totaling $209,326 to study pressure-related injuries often suffered by Red Snapper during catch and release fishing. The funding also will continue research to examine devices that could help ensure a better survival rate for released fish. “This research funding will allow us to refine our understanding of the fate of released fish in the Red Snapper fishery, and help improve the chances of survival for these fish,” said Dr. Greg Stunz, HRI Endowed Chair for Fisheries and Ocean Health and CSSC Director. Red Snapper is one of the most valuable fish in the Gulf of Mexico, highly sought after by commercial fishermen and sport fishermen alike. Considered overfished in recent decades, the species has been subject to drastic reductions in the length of the fishing season and bag limits. The 2015 Red Snapper season, beginning in June, will last 44 days for charter captains and just 10 days for recreational fishermen. “Red Snapper are typically found on reefs and near the sea floor,” said Dr. Judd Curtis, a CSSC Post-Doctoral Research Associate who is leading the project. “Because of the depth at which they’re caught, as the angler reels the fish in, the rapid ascent to the surface causes gas to expand in its swim bladder and other body parts. This causes injuries known as ‘barotrauma.’ These injured fish may exhibit symptoms like an expanded abdomen, stomach protruding through the mouth and bulging eyes.” Though many hooked Red Snapper are released back into the Gulf to aid in conservation efforts, they may not survive these pressurerelated injuries. In addition to causing injury, barotrauma may make it difficult for the fish to return to deeper waters due to increased buoyancy, making the fish an easy meal for dolphins or other predators. Getting fish back under water quickly can help mitigate barotrauma injuries. In addition to studying these pressure-related injuries, this

yearlong project will assess tools known as descender devices that attach to fishing gear “These descender devices operate by quickly returning fish to depth and reversing the debilitating effects of barotrauma, greatly increases the chance of survival after catch-andrelease,” Curtis said. The study will assess the effectiveness of these devices and evaluate their compatibility with charter fishing operations. Ensuring the survival of released Red Snapper is one of many steps scientists can take to ensure the recovery and better management of this important and iconic Gulf fishery, Stunz said. “A high discard rate can greatly reduce that amount of fish that are available to catch or days in the season. Improved survival mean faster recovery of this overfished fishery, and will ultimately improve access and secure more days on the water for all anglers,” Stunz said.

The grant was one of 15 awards totaling $1.6 million made by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation through its Fisheries Innovation Fund. The grants help NOAA Fisheries meet its mission of sustainable fisheries by supporting new ideas in fisheries management. The Fisheries Innovation Fund is a publicprivate partnership launched in 2010 with funding from NOAA Fisheries, the Walton Family Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Over the past five years, the Fisheries Innovation Fund has provided approximately $8 million to fund 77 projects throughout the country.

TPW Commission Adopts Changes to Commercial Shrimp and Oyster Rules Commercial bay shrimpers will no longer have to cull small shrimp during the fall season, thanks to regulation changes adopted Thursday by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

returned to the reef at the time of harvest and be counted as an undersized oyster, and amended the definition of “sack of oysters” to include dead oyster shell greater than ¾”.

The elimination of a 50 heads on shrimp per pound count/size requirement for commercial bay shrimpers in inside waters during the fall season (Aug. 15-Oct. 31) should help reduce resource waste that occurs from undersized shrimp mortality during the culling process.

Many of the state’s oyster reefs have been depleted and hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of cultch (material, such as oyster shell, that furnishes a place for larval oysters to attach and grow to maturity) have been removed from the state’s public oyster reefs as a consequence of oyster dredging. The majority of the cultch removed from public reefs is not recovered. The continuing removal of shell from oyster habitat poses a threat to the viability of the state’s oyster fishery, because a reduction in the cultch juvenile oysters depend on for growth results in less recruitment and, potentially, fewer legalsized oysters.

The commission also clarified reference to the effective date of federal rules stipulating turtle excluder device (TEDs) requirements and corrected an outdated statement regarding the waters in which TEDs are required. In addition, the commission approved changes to commercial oyster fishing regulations requiring dead oyster shell greater than ¾” to be

Kemp’s Ridley Nesting And Hatchling Release Update By Donna J. Shaver, Ph.D. Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery, National Park Service, Padre Island National Seashore, e-mail: Donna_Shaver@nps.gov

Padre Island Real Estate Activity May 16- May 31

Through May 30, 127 Kemp’s ridley nests have been located in Texas so far this year. Eighty-eight of the 127 nests were found in the local area, including 83 at Padre Island National Seashore, 4 on North Padre Island north of the National Seashore, and 1 on Mustang Island. The 127 exceeds the 119 nests found in Texas during all of 2014. It is the peak of the Kemp’s ridley nesting season so hopefully more nests will be found soon.

Please report nesting Although turtle patrollers discovered most of these nests, some were found by beachgoers and others working on the beach. Please watch for nesting Kemp’s ridley turtles while you are on the beach. Immediately report nesting turtles to a passing turtle patroller or by calling 361-949-8173, ext. 226 (North Padre Island) or 1-866-TURTLE5 (elsewhere in Texas).

If you see a nesting turtle, please do not rush up her or you could frighten her back into the water without nesting. To learn more about what to do if you see a nesting turtle and to obtain the latest information on the number of nests found this year, visit the Padre Island National Seashore website at www.nps.gov/pais (click on the “Protecting Sea Turtles” link) or our Facebook page titled Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery.

When eggs are placed into our incubation facility, we list the projected release dates for the hatchlings that will emerge from those eggs on our website at www.nps.gov/pais. The projected release dates encompass this 6-day-long window for each clutch of eggs in the facility. Each year, the public is invited to attend about 2025 of our hatchling releases. These public releases are held in front of the Visitor Center on Malaquite Beach at Padre Island National Seashore, starting at 6:45 am. No fee is charged to watch these releases and thousands of people attend each year.

Hatchling Releases Eggs from all nests found on the Texas coast are retrieved from the beach for protected incubation to help keep them and the resulting hatchlings safe from predators, high tides, human disturbance, and other factors that could harm or kill them. Eggs from most nests found at Padre Island National Seashore and northward on the Texas coast are brought to our incubation facility at the National Seashore for

Hatchlings must be released when they enter an active state called the “frenzy”. Typically our releases are scheduled when multiple clutches are hatching at once and we advise people interested in attending a public release to target a time when several clutches are due to hatch at the same time. The more clutches hatching at a given time, the better chance that some hatchlings will frenzy at the time of a scheduled public release. This provides “insurance” so if some of the hatchlings become active and must immediately be released in the middle of the night, others are potentially still available for the early morning scheduled public release. If you are interested in attending a release you should first check the website at www.nps.gov/pais for those projected release dates for clutches that we are incubating. As the date that you are interested in approaches, start calling the Hatchling Hotline (tel. 361-949-7163) for the latest information on the next upcoming release. We will announce public hatchling releases on the Hatchling Hotline and on our Facebook

Hatchlings from the first nests found this year will be ready for release sometime between about June 13 and 18, and we hope to hold our first public release of the year then. However, only 4 clutches will hatch then and they will likely hatch at different times, so it may be difficult to hold a public release for them.

15005 Dasmarinas

For the eggs that have already been found and are incubating in our facility, there are multiple promising release dates between about June 20 and July 19. Note that releases will not be held on every day of that month, but the overall chances of seeing a release will be much greater on several of these days when multiple clutches are due to hatch at once. The Kemp’s ridley nesting season extends through mid-July, so more nests will likely be found this year. As nests are found and the eggs are placed into our facility we will add information about them to our webstie. Depending upon when more nests are found, public releases could continue through mid to late August this year.

Three Chords and the Truth

June 4, 2015

Island Moon

By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Another killer week… Schools out! Schools out! Teacher let the fools out. We’re officially on the summer side of Memorial Day and it appears that the rain has gone away, at least for the moment. So break out the sun block and get ready for… a lot of

Tessie Lou Williams and the Shotgun Stars will play the Back Porch tonight. Clay McClinton will play the Back Porch on Friday, June 12.

Coming this week…

DO NOT MISS LIST

The adorable Tessie Lou Williams and her Shotgun Gang will return to the Back Porch tonight, Thursday the 4th. This cowgirl has a beautiful, traditional country voice that is nothing short of delightful. She’s all hooked up in Gary P. Nunn’s camp and stays pretty close to the authentic side of country. Except for the rockin’ Patrice Pike show, this weekend is pretty much all country. On Friday, Cody Johnson, John Slaughter and Sam Riggs play Brewster Street and our old pal, Davin James (Spring, TX) will play the Porch. One break in the country overload is the Jimmy Buffettish band Aloha Dave and the Tourists show at Giggity’s. And speaking of Jimmy Buffett, Joe Duckworth called from the Bahamas to report that he and Tiffany Tuesday were hanging our with Mr. Margaritaville himself. Also on Friday, blues belter Hilda Lamas will play the House of Rock. On Saturday the 6th, I’ve already told you about Patrice Pike and Walt Wilkins… add Houston Marchman at the Back Porch to the list of hard decisions you’ll need to make tonight. And if you’re in the mood to knock some rust off the old pipes, try Pinata Protest (San Antonio, TX) at the House of Rock. You’ll never be the same.

Patrice Pike…

John Boyd and Passing Strangers played the Back Porch on Friday traffic. There are many great shows on our horizon. I saw some killer music last weekend. My old pal from San Antonio, John Boyd and Passing Strangers played a rocking show at the Back Porch last Friday. His drummer Chris Dodds, formerly with Two Tons of Steel, is a bonified hoot. I really dig those guys. I also caught shows by Ty Dietz, Mike Milligan, Mike Blakely and Hold Fast Fables. The Hold Fast show at Shorty’s was a keeper. They played inside the little bar and destroyed it. I didn’t know that place could hold that many people. The Monday night jam at Giggity’s looks like it has caught some thread. We’re seeing a lot of new faces over there. When you add players like Tony Saracene to a super dynamic Selfie host band, then it’s only natural that good musicians will follow.

are a sort of Central Texas all-star band. All of the bands performing every Saturday through Labor Day are in the Texas Music/Americana ilk and will feature Thom Shepherd & Coley McCabe, Thieving Birds, Bruce Robison & Kelly Willis, JOE ELY, Aaron Einhouse, Rob Baird, Zane Williams, Tyler & the Tribe, Bri Bagwell, Two Tons of Steel and Mark McKinney. That’s a tow sack full of talent there, folks. In case you haven’t been out to the Black Marlin yet, the restaurant offers an array of steak and seafood entrée’s with tons of cool appetizers, sandwiches and salads. The stage is outside the restaurant in a comfortable courtyard where you’ll also find another eagle’s nest bar perched 40 feet high overlooking the golf course. Pound for pound, this is one great place for live music. Go check out Walt Wilkins and see what I mean.

Delbert McClinton) will play the Porch. This will be Clay’s first appearance back in Port A since his automobile accident which very nearly cost him his life and resulted in some pretty serious head injuries. It’s great to see him back in the saddle and I know this will be a great show. Also on Friday the 12th, expat Melissa Brooke will grace the stage at the Patsy Jones Amphitheater (6-9) for another installment of the Port Aransas Parks and Rec summer music series, Sunset Sounds. This island tradition is way cool. It’s in Roberts Point Park next to the ferry landing and is free to the public. Bring your lawn chairs and ice chests. Pack up the kids and dogs and listen to some great music with a beautiful sunset back drop. Melissa’s music is in the rockin’ country vein. She claimed Port A as home until fairly recently moving back to her hometown of Ft. Worth. On Saturday the 13th, Americana studs Mark McKinney will play the Back Porch and Thom Shepherd & Coley McCabe will play the Black Marlin. Also, our little dumpling with a big girl attitude, Mandy Rowden (Austin, TX) will play Shorty’s. Mandy has been hard at work with benefit shows in Austin, helping out flood victims in Wimberley and San Marcos. And finally on the 13th, don’t miss the Belt Sander Races at the Gaff with Uncle Willie and Russell Edge. It’s truly Port Aransas at it’s finest.

On the horizon… And briefly, on the near horizon watch for shows by Jerry Diaz and Hanna’s Reef, The Toadies, Everclear, American Hi-Fi, Austin Heat, The Independent Thieves, Shelley King, Thieving Birds, Gary P. Nunn, Green Light Pistol, American Aquarium, Pete Benz, Ulrich Ellison, Joe King Carrasco, Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis, Todd Dorn, Larry Joe Taylor, Statesboro Revue and the great Joe Ely. That ought to keep you busy for a while. Stay safe.

Ray Summy, Tony Saracene, Cody Strong, Simon Jay and Chris Jordan perform at the weekly jam at Giggity’s Next week on Thursday the 11th,the party rock band, Naked Maja (Austin, TX) will play the Back Porch. On Friday the 12th, the great Clay McClinton (son of Texas Roadhouse legend

Hold Fast Fables played Shorty’s last Saturday Black Marlin Music Series… The Black Marlin Bar and Grill at the Palmilla Golf Resort in Port Aransas has announced this year’s live music series and it’s a goodern. They got the ball rolling last week with the great Charlie Robison and will have one of the most talented singer-songwriters on the circuit today, Walt Wilkins and the Mytiqueros (Austin, TX), this Saturday. The Mytiqueros

Walt Wilkins and the Mistiqueros will play the Black Marlin on June 6th.

Patrice Pike will play Giggity’s this Saturday night Patrice Pike (Austin, TX) will play Giggity’s this Saturday night. Billboard Magazine proclaimed the 43 year old singer-songwriter, “one of the finest up and coming contemporary rock singers in America.” She recorded with her band Sister 7 for the major label, Arista Records and, in short, is one perfect example of rock and roll at it’s finest. This lady exudes energy. I used to book Sister 7 at the Lab in S.A. some 14-15 years ago and will always remember the mark she left on those young frenzied crowds. I hadn’t seen her in all those years until her performance at the Gaff last year and I’m proud to report I was once again blown away. This is definitely a DO NOT MISS show. Trust me.
