The Month Of May Serves As National Stroke Awareness Month

Letters to the Editor

By Todd Hunter, District 32

In this week’s article, I want to feature National Stroke Awareness month. It is designated during the month of May. This month works to help educate the public about the important stroke signs that people can identify and understand in their own lives. There are a number of simple warning signs that can help be an early warning indicator. These key indicators make a significant difference in the early diagnosis of various heart related illnesses. There are many basic things that relate to heart health that people do not often realize. The American Heart Association is an advocacy organization that has helped to develop a program known as the F.A.S.T. program. F.A.S.T. is an acronym that stands for: Face dropping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call 9-1-1. These are four simple signs that can be identified to help recognize these early warning signs. The American Heart Association’s joint website with the American Stroke Association provides a brief breakdown of these four identifiable symptoms/warning signs: • Face Dropping – Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven? • Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the Person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? • Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? • Time to call 9-1-1 – If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get the person to the hospital immediately. Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared. The American Heart Association (AHA) is an organization that works to help bring leadership and resources to all levels of government. Whether it is the federal, state or local level, the AHA identifies ways of educating the public and develops systems of care that work to help acute conditions, which will result in helping to improve the patient’s outcomes. Many of these systems work to coordinate

those impacted to help them recover while also improving the cost-effectiveness of their care. These systems of care generally are tailored by more localized methods such as certain regions of the nation and also individual states. A lot of the criteria they use is from localized data that they have collected and works to create a seamless transition from each stage of care. It is with these types of awareness and outreach that they hope will save lives. If you would like to learn more information about healthy tips on cardiovascular health, you can visit the American Heart Association’s website at www. heart.org and the American Stroke Association’s website at www.strokeassociation.org If you would like to follow the Texas House and learn more information on news, committees or other aspects of the legislative body, you can access its website at http://www.house. state.tx.us/. The site features live streaming from the House floor, committee hearings as well as access to a number of other resources. You can also follow the Texas Senate at http:// www.senate.state.tx.us/. The Texas Governor’s official website can be found at http://governor. state.tx.us/. For important information regarding transportation in the state, feel free to visit the Texas Department of Transportation’s website at http://www.txdot.gov/. The Texas General Land Office’s website can be found at http:// www.glo.texas.gov/, while the Texas Railroad Commission’s website is located at http://www. rrc.state.tx.us/. As a reminder, the 84th Texas Legislative Session is currently underway. As always, I want to hear your ideas and suggestion. Your ideas and information are important forms of feedback and I hope that you will not hesitate to contact my office. If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. Please always feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or issues regarding a Texas state agency, or if you would like to contact my office regarding constituent services. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603). Rep. Hunter represents Nueces (Part) County. He can be contacted at todd.hunter@house. state.tx.us or at 512-463-0672.

Insurance Bill in Senate Coastal property owners - both residential and commercial - face a one-two punch if Senate Bill 1628 becomes law. The bill, pending in Chairman Todd Hunter's (R-Corpus Christi) schedule-setting House Calendars committee, is a giveaway to insurance companies at the expense of homeowners and businesses. Coupled with restrictions placed on TWIA policyholders enacted in 2011, SB 1628 removes the last line of defense for homeowners and businesses with valid property damage claims. “Coastal property owners can’t take another hit,” said Alex Winslow, executive director of the statewide policyholder advocacy group Texas Watch. “First came TWIA. Now comes all insurance companies grabbing with both hands." In 2011, lawmakers erected a series of barriers that severely curtail important legal protections when coastal communities are devastated by windstorms, eviscerating the legal rights of coastal property owners insured through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. Now, lawmakers are expanding TWIA-style restrictions to all Texas property insurance policies. This move will make it easier for insurance companies to cheat their customers. The bill impacts claims by both residential and commercial policyholders and is not limited to just wind or hail claims. In fact, the bill undermines decades of policyholder protections for claims involving theft, fire, vandalism, water damage, and any other peril covered by a property damage policy.

“All Texans - and coastal homeowners and businesses in particular - need and deserve real protections that force insurance companies to pay valid claims in full and on time,” said Winslow. “SB 1628 is a knock out blow to coastal property owners. It gives to insurance companies by taking from hard working families and businesses.”

The bill does the following: - Incentivizes low and slow pay tactics by insurance companies by reducing penalties for insurance companies that fail to pay claims promptly - Effectively immunizes insurance adjusters, agents, and employees for misconduct and misrepresentations - Creates new “gotcha” provisions that criminalize innocent mistakes by homeowners and businesses while immunizing industry misconduct

- Severely restricts the time homeowners and businesses have to file a claim

The bill is facing growing opposition within the business community. Dozens of businesses and churches, as well as school, trade, and citizen groups have added their voices in opposition to SB 1628. N. Alex Winslow Executive Director Texas Watch

Insurance Bill The Texas House of Representatives will likely consider legislation that eviscerates key protections for property insurance policyholders this week. The bill - Senate Bill 1628 - is being rushed through the House without public input. It does the following: - Incentivizes low and slow pay tactics by insurance companies by reducing penalties for insurance companies that fail to pay claims promptly - Effectively immunizes insurance adjusters, agents, and employees for misconduct and misrepresentations - Creates new “gotcha” provisions that criminalize innocent mistakes by homeowners and businesses while immunizing industry misconduct - Severely restricts the time homeowners and businesses have to file a claim

“Senate Bill 1628 protects deny, delay, underpay insurance industry tactics, making it easier for insurance companies to cheat their customers. The effect of this legislation – if passed by the House – would be to undermine crucial policyholder protections designed to ensure fair, timely payments to Texas families and businesses with valid insurance claims,” said Alex Winslow, executive director of policyholder advocacy group Texas Watch. "This bill is fundamentally flawed. It is facing growing opposition within the business community and a groundswell of grassroots opposition from Texans across the state.” Dozens of business leaders from across the state have written letters raising concerns about the impact the bill will have on their businesses. Alex Winslow

AARP: Property insurance bill excessive, harmful to consumers Consumers are being squeezed out in the battle between the insurance industry and trial lawyers over the payment of claims dealing with haildamaged roofs and other storm-related losses, and AARP Texas officials said today the organization will alert its members about the potentially costly consequences at stake.

to ensure insurers pay claims on time and in full. Currently, an insurer must acknowledge a claim, investigate, request information, accept or reject and pay, or be subject to an 18% penalty on the entire amount. The proposed measure would limit the 18% penalty to the "unpaid" amount of the claim.

"It's wrong to punish honest people who've already been victimized by weather-related catastrophes... again," said Bob Jackson, AARP Texas state director. "This is not how you deal with any excesses in the system or bad apples in the bunch."

So for example, in the case of a hail-damaged roof in which the insurer only offers to pay 60% of the repair costs, the 18% penalty would apply only to the 40% unpaid portion of the claim. "This is problematic because if a carrier offers 60 cents on the dollar, you cannot put on 60% of a roof, Jackson noted. “Either the policyholder has enough money to make full repairs or the roof will go unrepaired."

At issue is SB 1628, by Rep. Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood, which includes several provisions that would make it devastatingly difficult for homeowners with legitimate insurance claims to pursue those claims. Without public testimony, the bill sailed out of the House Insurance Committee Friday on a 6-3 vote and could be called up by the full House at any moment. It passed the Senate by a 21-10 vote on April 29. "The insurance industry, already enjoying record profits in Texas, has its fingerprints all over this bill and would now want you to believe that it is designed to protect policyholders," Jackson said. "That's disingenuous, and we all know better." One of SB 1628's most egregious provisions eliminates a long-standing Texas law designed

Moreover, SB 1628 would negate the 18% penalty if the insurer chooses an appraisal even if it's long after the proper time has passed to investigate the claim. So basically, an insurer could ignore every deadline for processing the claim, then play the appraisal card and not have to pay any penalty. This would be true even if the appraisal is over a small, unrelated part of the claim. "Insurance companies have taken Texas' allergy season to new heights," Jackson said. "They are good at collecting premiums but quite allergic to paying claims." AARP Texas

The victim would not cooperate with officers and refused to say what had happened. A witness told officers that the victim was walking behind the apartment complex with two men when he was punched in the head numerous times with a fist of one of the other men. The witness believed the assault was over drugs. The victim was transported to Bay Area Hospital by CCFD EMS. Two hours later, the victim was transferred to Spohn Memorial Hospital due to his injuries not improving. When the victim took a turn for the worst, police detectives were notified. While investigating this case, a suspect was identified and located at the apartment complex.

Dallas Cowboys among NFL teams paid by DOD to spotlight service members By Dotson Lewis Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s Note: I wrote last week, “as taxpayers, you are concerned with how the government spends your money, & even if you don’t care for sports, I’m willing to wager you a dram of your/my favorite adult beverage that you have seen at least one NFL pre-game show a year.” The lead-in to last week’s story was: “The price of supporting the troops is paid to the NFL; the Department of Defense paid NFL teams more than $5 million over four years to buy moments that honored troops. It’s disingenuous -- and also par for the course for the NFL’s operations. The scene is familiar at any sporting event. The PA announces, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, please turn your attention to our Hometown Hero,’ and the JumboTron shows some soldier waving humbly, flanked by cheerleaders. The moment is touching; it is a fleeting opportunity to connect to whatever we feel toward the troops -- memories of friends lost, of family members’ service, of the people we might have been.” I did not realize that while I was writing this on Sunday, May 10th, that the pot was already being stirred. I heard last Thursday that the Cowboys were saying that they had donated the money ($62,500) to a worthy cause such as Army/Navy Emergency Relief. I cannot find any factual evidence to support this claim. The only statement from the Cowboys is by their spokesman Rich Dalrymple’s Email which is contained in the article below. I’ve emailed the Cowboys to get more details about Dallas’ deal. I am still willing to make the wager as stated above. The Dallas Cowboys finish near the top on many NFL money lists. But they made only a small splash when the military was doling out marketing contracts. The Department of Defense spent $5.4 million to prominently feature members of the military at NFL team events between 2011 and 2014, according to documents obtained by NJ.com. The Cowboys received $62,500. Most of the military contracts – only recently made public – have been in-game salutes to the military that were criticized by at least one member of Congress. U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., called the deals “egregious

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., called the military contracts with the NFL “egregious and unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars.” of the National Guard Bureau Gen. Frank Grass requesting detailed information on marketing, advertising, and promotion contracts between branches of the Department of Defense and professional sports and collegiate sports teams. Flake requested additional information on taxpayer-funded payments to sports teams for honoring U.S. military service members, a practice he brought to national attention on April 30 by highlighting a $115,000 payment from the New Jersey Army National Guard to the New York Jets for advertising services that included recognizing soldiers as “Hometown Heroes” at games. Flake noted a subsequent investigation by his office uncovered a number of marketing, advertising and promotions contracts between branches of the Department of Defense and professional sports teams in the National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National

Members of the U.S. military lead the New England Patriots onto the field ahead of the start of the NFL Super Bowl XLIX football game against the Seattle Seahawks in Glendale, Arizona. and unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars,” although he focused mainly on the New York Jets. He said fans would have easily mistaken the promotions – including recognized men and women as “Hometown Heroes” — as team sponsored rather than advertisements paid with federal taxes. “Those of us go to sporting events and see them honoring the heroes,” Flake told NJ.com. “You get a good feeling in your heart. Then to find out they’re doing it because they’re compensated for it, it leaves you underwhelmed. It seems a little unseemly.” Most of the promotions were contracted by the National Guard and also included more traditional advertising, such as video board commercials or promotions. NFL teams already have annual Veterans Day celebrations at November home games. Patrick Daugherty, a spokesman for the New Jersey National Guard, told NJ.com: “Promoting and increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation of military service in the New Jersey Army National Guard increases the propensity for service in our ranks and garners public support for our Hometown Team.” Only 14 of the NFL’s 32 teams received these contracts. The Cowboys were among the minority of teams that got paid, but the team’s lone contract in 2012 was among the smallest. The Atlanta Falcon’s $1 million plus was the highest with the Baltimore Ravens just behind at $884,500. Among the teams that signed these contracts, the Miami Dolphins’ $20,000 deal was the smallest.

Dalrymple said via email: “We have had marketing and sponsorship agreements with the military. We have also been long standing and proud supporters of the United States military through our own annual programs that have been funded by our organization for decades.” He said he didn’t have details of the contract.

U.S. Senate Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, has also upped his criticism of parts of this program. He sent a letter to the secretary of defense and chief of the National Guard asking for more details.*

Dotson’s Other Note: Many thanks to Jeff Mosier, Dallas Morning News writer, for many of the facts contained in this article. It is great to hear from so many of you ‘Moon Monkeys’ who are concerned with a very big business (the NFL) “tapping the government till.” My take: Since the United States no longer has a military draft (which I favor), the armed forces are in competition with the civilian sector to recruit men and women to go to work for them. Thus the Department of Defense & the National Guard has a rather large recruiting budget. What are your thoughts on the expenditures? Your comments and/or questions are greatly appreciated. Veterans Health Care Summit May 27 The Veterans Health Care Administration will be the subject of a public summit on Wednesday, May 27, from 6-8:30 p.m. in room 106 of the Del Mar College Center for Economic Development, located at 3209 South Staples, across the street from Ray High School. There are currently about 30,000 veterans who live in Nueces County, however, only about 8000 are registered with the local VA Clinic; the failure of the majority of the veterans to register locally hampers local efforts to expand veterans’ health facilities and care in Nueces County. The meeting is being held by Concerned Veterans of America, a privately funded organization which includes former Congressmen, Senators, and Retired Generals. The group recently spent five days in Washington D.C. meeting with members of Congress to push reform of the Veterans Administration, and the Health Care System in particular. A complimentary dinner will be served. The public, retired and current military personnel, and their spouses are welcome.

SMA Spanish Class Haiku Poetry Students Try Poetic Hand in Spanish Elefante

By Brent Rourk Undoubtedly, poetry is not everybody’s bag, especially middle school students whose minds arguably tend to wander to more favorable topics like video games, sports, the opposite sex, and their favorite food and television program, among other topics. Poetry is an art and science rolled into one avenue of communication that takes practice, patience, and perseverance. Students in Spanish 1B recently tried their hand at writing poetry in Spanish, specifically in Haiku style. The trick, of course was to adhere to as many rules of Haiku as possible, a challenge for anybody let alone a second language learner. Another challenge was to either think in English first and then concert to Spanish (inevitably changing wording to conform to the traditional 5-7-5 syllable rule) or to think in Spanish initially and to make those thoughts and words conform. The poems were collected, corrected, and graded (meeting rules of Haiku) and then anonymously one poem from each student was placed in a table and all of the students selected their favorite three poems. Votes were tallied and the top poems were selected and announced.

current location, thereby expanding its seating and continuing a growth pattern that has brought 112 name plays to local audiences. In addition the PACT location has been home to countless musical events, guests, and shows. PACT has become financially solvent and has been able to maintain the theatre, while establishing productive artnerships with countless local businesses, including Sandfest. We hear at times about the immense value that one person can have on a group or organization and in Betty’s case, her value was incalculable as PACT grew, experienced growing pains, and found its new home. Betty has been the cog who has tirelessly devoted her expertise, energy, and effectiveness to the overall operation and growth of PACT. She will be missed, however, she will be available to assist PACT from time to time.

Betty too will miss her interaction with PACT. She confided, “What I will miss most is knowing what is going on and what is coming up. The board makes all of the big decisions – what we do and when and where we do it. Timing is important in this town. It is important to know when to put on what for our audiences.”

Thanking Others

Betty Crawford Arrives in Port Aransas Betty enthusiastically discussed her arrival in Port A, “George and I were lucky. We came 25 years ago and bought a condo. We were retired and when we came here we jumped into volunteer work. It was also the easiest way to meet other people.” Little did Port Aransas know that it would be lucky that Betty and George chose Port Aransas. So how did Betty start her theatre career here? She continued, “I saw an ad in a local newspaper 23 years ago seeking people to participate in a melodrama.” It caught Betty’s eye and thus began her long time association with PACT.

Early Port Aransas Theatre Entertainment Betty eagerly joined forces with a few other locals to provide regular entertainment on the Island. Reflecting back on old times and memories, Betty commented, “When Jane Bull was here and she choreographed everything. We came out to entertain. Singing was a big part of the theatre back then. I liked to sing more than act but I acted in many plays too.” Indeed she did, thoroughly enjoying acting in the early days. Betty confided, “I acted in Cemetery Club, Nunsense, Hartz in Harmony, and others. Most of them were in the early days when we all did everything. We had talent shows and cabarets. Anybody in town got involved too – it was a lot of fun.” But her contributions did not stop there.

Betty’s Legacy She has been at the helm of PACT as the theatre has grown. She stated, “ I hope that we can get more people involved in theatre because it is an experience that broadens people. It is a great experience in life. A lot of people did not grow up with theatre so that has been a challenge to get more people to participate.” With a handful of other loyal and determined theatre lovers, acting has been delivered to Port Aransas, infusing with a taste of big city theatre. Betty claimed, “We [PACT] have put on many published plays, usually 6 plays a season, while partnering with school systems and putting on a host of other events.” Along with big name plays, Port Aransas has a ‘real’ theatre thanks to Betty, donors, and a host of community volunteers and donors. She continued, “We had so many different people who have given us so much help it is hard to remember them all. [But she did] The Strohms helped a lot. Together they were our first large donors that got the funding for the theatre started. I just want to thank the people of Port Aransas for their help and support. All of the volunteers of the world should be blesses. Her biggest accomplishments was no doubt getting the new building. Betty stated, “I started in 1992. It was hard work back then, but it was fun. It was challenging in the old outdoor theatre. It was a completely different concept. We were outdoors for 9 years, then in the little theatre for 7 years. We needed another home.” The new theatre opened in 2006. Without exaggeration Betty has become an institution as far as theater and entertainment are concerned in Port Aransas. The gains made over her tenure have been monumental. Additionally, Betty has kept flawless records about the history of PACT, something that will continue to be important to PACT and the city over time.

Theatre Over the Years During her 23 year tenure, PACT has found its

It was easy for Betty to list names of people who she wished to thank for their contributions even though there are so many. It has been a team effort. She has been delighted with the growth of children’s theatre in Port Aransas and she also acknowledged Ken Yarbrough, “I thank Ken Yarbrough for his contributions in creating the summer plays. When he works with children he is fantastic. I don’t know how he does it but he gets the best out of the children.” No great accomplishments happen in a vacuum or even with just one person. Though Betty has been a central driving figure in the growth of theatre in Port Aransas, She readily admits that it has been a group effort, “It takes lots of people who do a handful of tasks. Theatre is a miracle. Theatre is a labor of love.” Betty also mentioned the Winter Texans, “The winter Texans have been great for the theatre. They loved the theatre. They needed an indoor theatre and were able to get one.” The Winter Texans have had the opportunity to enjoy theatre during their winter stays in Port Aransas.

Thanking Betty Several people have spoken about Betty’s impact on the theatre in Port Aransas, and at the annual meeting Betty was showered with gifts of appreciation for her dedication, determination, and labor of love. Her portrait will hang in the theatre soon and hopefully those entering the theatre will know about her efforts to make the theatre happen in Port Aransas. Katie Sikes, teacher and long-time PACT member and actress stated, “It has been an honor, pleasure, and joy working with and performing with Betty, She will always be my PACT ‘Mama’ and when you’re good to mama…” Ashley Knotts, PACT Board Member and local actress summed up her experience with Betty and PACT, “Betty has been instrumental in PACT for two decades and it has been an honor serving with her on the board for the past two years. I have learned a lot about being patient, thinking things through before making decisions, and having the community theatre as the primary interest at heart.” After the crawfish boil and annual meeting, where new board member Victoria Stiewig was introduced, Betty took the stage for a curtain call, effortlessly belting out Patsy Jone’s tune ‘This is My Island’ just like she did years ago. Smiles lit a few faces as a few tears trickled down some cheeks. An institution. She has more than a few songs left in her, so it will not be a surprise to see Betty in a musical down the line. A thank you to PACT for what it has done for Port Aransas and a special thank you to Betty for giving her labor of love to PACT. At once, it is the end of an era and a new beginning. Good luck to Betty and good luck to PACT as the baton is passed to others and as it sets new goals. In the meantime, let’s make sure that we continue to enjoy the plays and shows that PACT offers. Peak of the Kemp’s Ridley Nesting Season By Donna J. Shaver, Ph.D. Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery, National Park Service, Padre Island National Seashore, e-mail: Donna_Shaver@ nps.gov

The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nesting season in Texas extends from April through mid-July. Typically, most nests are found during May and June. Through May 19, 67 Kemp’s ridley nests have recorded on the Texas coast this year. Many people are working to find and protect these endangered turtles and their eggs in Texas, and we hope that many more nests will be found in the coming weeks. Of the 67 nests found in Texas, 44 were located on North Padre Island, including 43 at Padre Island National Seashore. Each year, more Kemp’s ridley nests are found at the National Seashore than at any other location in the U.S. Eighteen of the 67 nests were on South Padre Island, and the other five were on the upper Texas coast. Turtle patrollers from various organizations are searching Texas Gulf beaches daily to find nesting Kemp’s ridley turtles and their eggs so that we can document and protect them. Beachgoers and other people working on the beach also sometimes find nesting, especially in developed areas of the Texas coast. Please watch for nesting Kemp’s ridley turtles while you are on the beach. Immediately report nesting turtles to a passing turtle patroller or by calling 361-949-8173, ext. 226 (North Padre Island) or 1-866-TURTLE5 (elsewhere in Texas).

You can view the tracks of these turtles on www.seaturtle.org. Once on this page, go to the satellite tracking link and look for the Padre Island National Seashore Kemp’s Ridley Tracking Program 2015.

Hatchling Release Each year, the public is invited to attend about 20-25 releases of hatchlings at Padre Island National Seashore. No fee is charged to watch these releases and thousands of people attend each year.

Seashore Middle Academy Theatre 1 Class Delivers Two 1-Act Plays

Eggs are removed from all sea turtle nests found in Texas to protect them from human caused and natural threats on the beach. Relocating the eggs to protected incubation enables us to increase hatching success of the eggs and survival of the hatchlings as they crawl down the beach and enter the surf. Eggs from most nests found at the National Seashore and northward on the Texas coast are brought to our incubation facility at the National Seashore for protected care. Eggs are also cared for in protective screen enclosures called corrals located in the southern half of the National Seashore and on South Padre Island.

It only takes about 45 minutes for the nesting turtle to crawl out of the water, dig a hole and lay her eggs, cover the nest, and return into the surf. At about half the nests found each year, the nesting turtle has already returned to the water by the time that turtle patrollers arrive. When the turtle is present, biologists document her and protect her until she has returned to the Gulf of Mexico. When the turtle is not present, we look for signs of where the nest might be located by closely examining the tracks that the nester left in the sand. So, if you arrive at a nesting site before biologists, please carefully place a marker next to where the turtle nested and do not step on the tracks and nest.

May 1- May 15

So far this year, 71 nests have been confirmed on the Texas coast including (north to south in state):

Eggs

If you see a nesting turtle, please do not rush up her or you could frighten her and cause her to go back into the water without nesting. To learn more about what to do if you see a nesting turtle and to obtain the latest information on the number of nests found this year, visit the Padre Island National Seashore website at www.nps. gov/pais or our Facebook page titled Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery.

Lots of people have already asked us when our first release of the year will be held. The first eggs found this year will begin hatching in midJune. Those first hatchlings will be ready for release sometime between about June 13 and 18, and we hope to hold our first public release of the year on one of those mornings. However, since only four clutches will hatch then, timing could be tricky since the turtles must be released when they become active. Other releases will follow in June, July, and likely early August. Some eggs will hatch during the July 4 weekend and we hope that we will be able to hold a public release sometime during that weekend.

You can learn about when our hatchling releases will be held by checking our website, Facebook page, and Hatchling Hotline. As eggs are placed into our incubation facility, the projected hatchling release dates for the resulting hatchlings are listed on our website at www.nps.gov/pais. When the eggs begin to hatch we are able to more closely pinpoint when the release will occur. We then place the latest information about the releases on our recorded Hatchling Hotline (tel. 361-949-7163) and our Facebook page titled Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Release the hounds… Memorial Day is upon us. You may release the hounds. I took a short beach run yesterday and our beach is one sloppy mess. Only a short drive from Avenue G to the pier and my car looks like I’ve been four-wheeling in the mud for two days. But, to my amazement, the beach was still packed. They have “high water” signs up at the entrances to the beach but it didn’t seem to matter. With rain still in the National Weather Service’s five day forecast, all I can say is ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We need to dry out. We have outdoor shows to put on and merriment to make. This weather is getting on my last good nerve. The clubs have a ton of big shows programmed at places like Concrete Street, Shorty’s, The Back Porch and The Gaff, etc. And all this music is at the mercy of Mother Nature. Say a little prayer and cross your fingers. As they say, the show must go on, come hail or high water.

Review: Songwriter Showcase…

May 21, 2015

Island Moon

to play with the island institution, Triggerfish, was joined on stage by Russell Edge, Preecher Williams and Woodie Lawson. One of the greatest moments of the Showcase was when Brodhag took the stage. I really think he is one of the best songwriters I’ve heard. He was accompanied by Jamie Smith on harmonica. When local songbird Carol Elliott took the stage she actually brought the crowd to a complete hush with her self penned Sergeant York sang in a capella. She also sang a stirring song dedicated to the memory of the late Dan Winship, a long time supporter of island arts and music and board member at the Port Aransas Art Center. Carol was followed by Todd Dorn, Ty Dietz & Tony Saracene, L. Leon Sands and Ruben Limas… all diverse artists ranging from country to blues to rock to folk. The Independent Thieves (Garrett Wieland and David King) were big crowd pleasers as was Marc Borde and his island/reggae band Hold Fast Fables. Other treats were local songwriters Guy LeRoux, Billy Snipes, Hamp Brockman, Janet Drew and Tyler McCumber. Woodie Lawson’s new band, the Bad Bouys, which features Ron Baker on guitar, Rusty Hicks on drums and Steve Goldstein on anything with strings, polished off the night with four very rocking songs written by Lawson. I think this new band is on to something. All of the artists volunteered their time and talents for this much loved island event as all proceeds go to benefit the Port A Art Center.

The great Charlie Robison will play the Black Marlin this Saturday

was up tempo and cooler than the other side of the pillow. Then on Saturday, my old pal, the great honky tonkin’ Jesse Dayton (Austin, TX) rolled into town for a gig at the Back Porch. I used to bounce his little boy on my knee and that kid’s in college now. I got a call from Jesse that went something like this, “Hey Ronnie, I go on in 8 minutes. You know where I can get an acoustic guitar?” It seems his was in the shop and he didn’t like the one he had rented. I told him he could use my Martin and come on over. So I jumped in with his crew and it turned out to be one rocking night. Shocker! BTW, my guitar never sounded better.

residency at Shorty’s. On Friday the 22nd, Austrian born Ulrich Ellison & Tribe (Austin, TX) will bring there dynamic blues rock to Shorty’s…. that’s a definite DO NOT MISS. Also on Friday, cosmic cowboy pioneer Gary P. Nunn will play the Porch, 90 Proof will play Giggity’s and Mark Wilks will the The Gaff. On Saturday the 23rd, Americana superstar, Charlie Robison will kick off the summer music series at the Black Marlin. Can’t say enough good things about Charlie Robison… super talented writer and performer. Also on Saturday, the rockabilly rockers Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang will play Giggity’s, island timer Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) will play the Porch. On Sunday the 24th, the impressive Beau Walker will play Shorty’s, none other than the great Max Stalling (Dallas, TX) will play the Back Porch and my hillbilly gospel band The Sandy Bottom Boys will play a gospel mass at Trinity by the Sea. The big Memorial Day show on Sunday is at Concrete Street with

The week in review…

James Derkits at the Songwriter’s Showcase in Port A last Sunday The 32nd Annual Songwriter’s Showcase, held last Sunday, was a rousing success despite the fact that it had to be moved to the pavilion at Roberts Point Park due to recent flooding in Port A. It’s been held on the big field at the end of the park in past years, but that just wasn’t an option this year. That field was wet. So the pavilion it was, bad acoustics and all. The powers that be, Elvin “Preecher” Williams, Woodie Ray Lawson and Mary Rose are to be commended for their efforts. It was a musically pleasing and diverse array of artists that played this year and I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from everyone involved. Newcomer Simon Jay got the ball rolling around 4:00 with some rowdy strumming, followed by James Derkits, Mark Wilks, Perry Wing and Dan Brodhag. Derkits, make that Father James, sang a song called No Room at the Inn, which he wrote after visiting the Texas border and organized relief efforts for Central American immigrants. Wilks, who used

Mandy Rowden played Shorty’s last Friday Also last week, our favorite bad girl Mandy Rowden played another excellent show at Shorty’s. Mandy is fresh off a month on the road supporting her latest CD, Bad Habits. I was surprised, in a good way, at the Bellfuries (Austin, TX) show at the Back Porch last Friday. I had no idea what they were about going in, but I’m sure glad I went. In a nutshell, they were a group of fairly young men with a penchant for the old school country style. It
