Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

R.I.P. Smokin’ Joe Kubek… An old friend passed away last Sunday. Smokin’ Joe Kubek (Dallas, TX) died unexpectedly from a heart attack at the age of 58. He played his next to last gig at Rockit’s Whiskey Bar in Corpus last Thursday. I’ve known Joe since the early 90’s when he and his partner Bnois King played the Billy Blues clubs that I booked and managed in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Denver. Joe was a dedicated bluesman and a monster guitarist. I was humbled that he thanked me on one of his earlier CD’s. He was a veteran of the Dallas Blues scene and kicked around with likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pat Boyack, Doyle

Mandy, Ruben, Mark & Stewart…

the fabulous South Texas Grassroots Band will provide some top notched bluegrass. They have held court on Sundays at the Island Italian for many a moon. I really want to emphasize that these shows are FAMILY FRIENDLY. It’s not a bar environment and the show times are plenty early. The grub’s pretty darn scrumptious too.

DO NOT MISS LIST Mark Monaco and Strayhearts played the Back Porck last Friday already fat sound and is nothing but a win-win in my eyes. The Back Porch had an outstanding weekend. Mark Monaco scaled his band down to a three piece but that’s all he needed. Those guys have a rich folk meets country meets blues sound that really works. I’ve seen these guys three times now and grow fonder of them every time. Monaco may very well be the sleeper on our regional circuit. The BIG show this weekend was, without a doubt, Statesboro Revue at the Porch. These boys have got it going on. They are charting at a hot number 6 on the Texas Music Charts with their latest release Undone. Plus they have been sharing the stage with such heavyweights as the Marshall Tucker

Radney Foster & Mark McKinney to play Cinnamon Shore…

Radney Foster will play at Cinnamon Shores this Saturday.

Stewart Mann and Statesboro Revue played the Back Porch last Saturday Band and songwriting stalwart Dean Dillon. They stay busy on the roads all over Texas and Europe and put on one heck of show. They are as much at home singing original country-rock songs as they are knocking out their own spin on Jumping Jack Flash. I’d say Mr. Mann and his traveling troubadours are bound for glory.

Kid friendly shows at Island Italian…

Mark McKinney will play Cinnamon Shore this Saturday.

Mandy Rowden played Shorty’s last Saturday I caught some really great shows last weekend. The standouts were Mandy Rowden (Austin, TX) at Shorty’s, Ruben Limas and the Rolling J’s (Corpus Christi, TX) at Giggity’s and two shows at the Back Porch with Mark Monaco and Strayhearts (San Antonio, TX) and Stewart Mann and Statesboro Revue (Austin, TX). Mandy put on her usual upbeat performance but played a few more covers on this trip. She is always a delight. Mr. Limas has added a new member to his group by way of Charlie Rouzer on Hammond B-3. That silky layer really puts a fat toping on Ruben’s

Ruben Limas will start playing every Thursday (6-9) at Island Italian. One of our long time advertisers, Tony Tag over at Island Italian on Padre asked us to be sure to mention that he will start having live music again in his kid friendly restaurant. On Thursdays they will feature the great Ruben Limas playing solo from 6-9. Ruben knocks it out of the park every time. On Fridays and Saturdays from 6:30-9:30 Brian Winfrey performs. Brian loves to get the kids involved at his sing-along shows. And on Sundays from 6-9

Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang will play the Pig Party on Saturday. Miss Rose would be proud. Every year since 1982 the oldest and friendliest bar in Port A, Shorty’s Place has celebrated her birthday. Each year friends and patrons would flock to Shorty’s to present the proprietor, Miss Rose, with something that had a pig on it. She collected stuffed pigs, ceramic pigs, salt and pepper shakers, pig signs (“We Don’t Rent Pigs”), really all things imaginable with a pig theme. Her fondness for pigs turned into a free feral hog barbecue, and eventually grew into a “hog rally’’ of upward of 500 motorcycle riders from around the southwest part of the United States and all over the world who helped celebrate Miss Rose’s birthday. Since her death in September 2011, the bar has changed hands and the new owner, Edwin Myers has kept the flame alive. Grandson of Miss Rose, J.W. George weighed in with a quote, “I’m proud to be a part of most of the history of the last 25 years of this great party, and homage of my grandmother, Miss Rose. I think that Edwin and Amy and their cast and crew are doing a remarkable job with Pig Party, and I can’t wait for the year I make a triumphant return. God Bless Miss Rose, Shorty’s Place, and the patrons that make it AWESOME every year.” There will be food and music this Saturday starting at noon with Stevie Start, then Ruben and the Rolling J’s at 4:00 then Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang at 8:30-12:30.

Smokin’ Joe Kubek dead at 58 Bramhall, Freddie King and Jim Suhler. He was to play a blues festival in Wilmington, North Carolina the next day in which Dr. John was the headliner.
