Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

of ghosts. I want to encourage everyone to give Russell some love this Friday at Shorty’s. After last Saturday’s three hour performance to not one single person, he could sure use a little ego boost… Kimberly the bartender too.

Week of the costume… This has been the week of the costume. been to enough costume parties this week to kill a normal man. Between the Halloween parties last Saturday week, Halloween-proper parties on Thursday

Life’s a Song…

I’ve past prethe and

the Fall Back Fest this past Saturday, I took enough pictures of otherwise normal people in costumes to fill several photo albums. I must say though, the costumes were very creative… even the doggie costumes. Riley P. Dog as a mosquito truck, now that’s classic. But, I’ve had my fill of pirates, zombies, witches and naughty schoolgirls for at least another year. I went as an “Aloha Zombie” but didn’t win any prizes… it may have been a little too creepy. Thanks to my pal Julie Caraker for painting my face (twice). I thought it looked awesome. The award for best party this year goes to Giggity’s on the real Halloween night (Oct. 31). The place was packed and 90% of the crowd was in full blown regalia. It was definitely a world class party and a real indicator that Giggity’s has arrived. It was locals on parade. Lyrical Bynge did a great job on the bandstand that night. So did Cruise Control over at the Back Porch. By the time the Fall Back Festival rolled around at Giggity’s on Saturday, seeing a One Eyed One Horned Purple People Eater seemed pretty normal. Hat’s off to Ernie Garibay and Cats Don’t Sleep for the phenomenal show they put on that night… same to Full Body Puppets who took the late night duties. I’m worn out. It was a really fun week. And BTW, I want to give a nod to both Leslie Willey and Russell Edge last weekend, who brought up the rear with their shows at Shorty’s. All the excitement was down the street but they hung in there like champs even though their crowd was mostly made up

Ernie Garibay and Cats Don’t Sleep played the Fall Back Festival at Giggity’s last Saturday.

My old pals, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines, were back in town last weekend, but not in their usual roles. They were conducting their annual “Life’s a Song Workshop” at the Third Coast Studios/ Theater in Port A. The Grammy award winning Hendrix Terri Hendrix talking about the lives by the motto, art of songwriting “own your own at the Life’s a Song universe” and has Workshop in Port A recorded for her own record label this weekend. for more than two decades with over a dozen CD’s to her credit. This workshop is only offered to a limited number of aspiring musicians and is mostly comprised of repeat customers, so the public wouldn’t really know it’s going on. I got a surprise call from my old friend of 30 years, Jim Beal, who you may remember as the veteran music writer at the San Antonio Express-News and bandleader of Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra from San Antonio. Seems he was asked to speak at the event and he and his wife Neesie decided to participate and invited me to observe. When I stopped by that afternoon, Lloyd was on the back porch helping a student write her song and Terri was inside extrapolating on the creative process. You could have cut the creativity with a knife in there. They address all parts of the process of professional musicianship, including songwriting, performing and also the business end…“the part that ain’t art” in which such topics as how to write a bio, how to get booked into venues, how to get the attention of the press, how to grow a fan base, how to make a good recording, and how to deal with copywriting and publishing your songs, etc. are addressed. Beal was to speak on the promotional end of the business, something he could easily write a book on. This informative workshop looks like it’s a lot of fun and ends with a performance from everyone involved who gets to perform their freshly written songs to the rest of the class. I stuck my head in the door for just a minute during the class performance that night and got to see Grammy winning producer, Lloyd Maines, at work on the recording and production end of the show. That in itself was worth the price of admission.

November 7, 2013

I really like these Thursday shows that Brewster Street Ice House has been doing. I got to see Uncle Lucius and Folk Family Revival a couple of weeks ago. Tonight, Thursday, November 7th, they’ll have Bart Crow and Josh Grider and on following Thursdays they will have more excellent bands such as Sons of Fathers, Turnpike Troubadours, Bob Schneider, Micky and the Motorcars, Rich Lockhart will Wade Bowen, play Giggity’s this Saturday. Brian Keane, Kyle Park and Curtis Grimes… that’s good stuff and well worth a trip into town. As for this weekend on the island, all I’m seeing is local, local and more local acts… it’s that time of year. On Friday, November 8th, Bushbullit will be at Giggity’s, Russell Edge will be at Shorty’s and Stevie Start will play the Back Porch. On Saturday, November 9th, The Daze will be at Mikel Mays, Uel Jackson will be at Shorty’s, Ruben and the Rolling Jays will play the Back Porch and Richard Lockhart will be at Giggity’s. Also on Saturday, Triggerfish will reunite to play a fundraiser for the ARK at the Port Aransas Civic Center… truly a good cause. If there was ever a weekend to get out there and support local music, this is it.

On the horizon… Next Thursday, November 14th, the House of Rock will have a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan with performances by a couple guitar slingers who more than know their way around a Stevie song or two: Ray T and the City Crew and John Cortez. I’ve heard both of these guys shred SRV many times and best believe they both consider Stevie “the best there ever was”. On Friday, November 15th, it’s boot scootin’

Ray T and the City Crew will play the SRV Tribute at the House of Rock on Nov 14th. with Three Way Street at Giggity’s. I hear they are getting some local radio play with a newly recorded single. Also on the 15th, John Eric will be at the Back Porch, Ruben Limas will be at Shorty’s and the House of Rock will put on a big reggae show with Flatbroke, HighBred Roots, Bad Chords and Green Party. On Saturday, November 16th, Lyrical Bynge will be at Giggity’s, Fabian Rivera will be at Mikel Mays, The Independent Thieves will be at Shorty’s, Out of Bounds will be at the Back Porch, Buster Jiggs will be at the Executive Surf Club and Vallejo will play the House of Rock. Buster Jiggs and Vallejo are the stand-outs

Richard Leigh will play the Island Presbyterian Church on Nov. 16th. there. Also on the 16th, Nashville songwriter and recording artist extraordinaire, Richard Leigh, will be playing a show at the Island Presbyterian Church on Padre Island. I’ve seen Leigh perform several times and can attest that he’s the real deal. He’s written a suitcase full of number one hit songs including the Crystal Gale hit, Don’t It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue. The first time I met him, we sat down at Shorty’s for a beer and he went over to the juke box and played six of his songs. It was pretty impressive. More on Richard Leigh next time.

And that’s the truth!
