Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Doug Sahm (Nov. 6, 1941- Nov. 18, 1999)… I want to mention that the anniversary of the death of Texas music pioneer, Doug Sahm, was this week. He died on November 18, 1999. Sahm is considered to be one of the main influences in the progression of Texas music. He was a child prodigy from San Antonio who was proficient with 30 instruments. The late great Doug Sahm founded the Sir Sahm, a Texas Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornadoes musical treasure. with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez. I was his booking agent from 1994 until his death. I remember that date in 1999 well. Jim Beal, music writer for the San Antonio Express-News, called me and gave me the bad news. Jim was also a fan and life long friend of Sahm’s and the news hit both of us hard. We met later at Cibilo Creek Country Club (I think Dave Alvin was playing that night) and toasted to the hero that Sahm was and then planned his wake at the nightclub I was managing (The Laboratory). The wake after Doug’s funeral turned into a virtual who’s who of music dignitary and we jammed all night long. Knowing Doug, I fully expected anyone from Paul McCartney to Bob Dylan to walk into the room at any minute. I still miss Doug Sahm every day. Rest in peace old friend.
Three Way Street…
Jimmy Simmons and Three Way Street played Giggity’s last Friday night. I had a lot of fun last weekend and got to see some new acts that I’d been wanting to catch for a long time and some repeat shows that I’m always glad to see. Jimmy Simmons and his band, Three Way Street, played over at Giggity’s on Friday night. Simmons tells me his band is in the process of beefing up their act some. They’ve been in the studio lately and have recorded a few songs that have caught the ear of a couple of radio stations around here. On Friday, they filmed the show and plan to start publishing their stuff on You Tube. This is good ole country music the way God wanted it to sound. Onward and upward, boys!
John Eric… And lastly on Friday, I finally got to see John Eric perform. I type his name in multiple gigs, week after week, but had never John Eric seen him perform. I was played the impressed. He didn’t look Back Porch last anything like I thought he

was going to. I had him pictured as a slick, Nashville clone with perfect hair and a starched shirt… man did I call that wrong. John is a big ole boy with a shaved head and as down to earth looking as it gets. And, he can really sing and play… and it’s not just covers. He writes and performs some really nice original songs. I can see why he’s so popular over on Padre Island and in Corpus. I like him. He’s good.
Smiles Layne/ Matt Hole & the Hot Rod Gang…
Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang played the Gaff’s Rockabilly Festival last Saturday. On Saturday afternoon, the Gaff (Port A’s premier pirate bar) hosted their first Rockabilly Festival. This show had Rae Drady (the promoter) written all over it. The term “festival” might be a little lenient, but I must say, it was a very entertaining show. Greg “Smiles” Layne (San Antonio, TX) got the ball rolling with a nice acoustic set. Smiles, formerly the front man for one of my favorite groups, Transistordale, is a man without a band these days. It seems he’s once again in search of a rhythm section. He is such a strong talent, I have no doubt that his search will be short. After Layne, Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang (Corpus Christi, TX) took the stage and flat gave us a lesson in proper rockabilly. I’d never see him perform before, but was well aware of his prowess, and I must say, his reputation is well deserved. All the girls started wiggling and energy in the place shot off the charts. Matt Hole and his little gang are top notch rockers. He’s got the spirit of the pioneers, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Elvis, Bill Haley…. Mr. Hole has it going on. I now think of him as a major party about to happen.
Independent Thieves…
The Independent Thieves played Shorty’s last Saturday night. On Saturday night I went by the Back Porch to hear Out of Bounds but they never showed up or even called… something about going to a ball game instead. So I headed over to Shorty’s and sat and listened to my favorite string band, Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX), the entire night. This is unusual for me, especially on a Saturday when I try to be in five places at one time. But the Thieves caught my attention and held it for three hours. They are that good. Their version of Steve Earle’s Galway Girl blows me away. These are old souls in young

Jammin’ at the Ice House… On Sunday, I went by the Tarpon Ice House for their weekly jam and I’m glad I did. Along with the regular host, Uel Jackson, Uel Jackson hosted the there was a weekly jam at the Tarpon charming array Ice House last Sunday. of musicians who showed up and played. Jackie Bales was there on his banjo and guitar, Uel’s daughter Sierra Jackson was in town from Concan and lent her amazing vocals to the mix, Bron Doyle had his congas going, Kit Gurtherz had declared the day Tuba Sunday, and a new guy named Eddie Dickerson was shredding on a fiddle. We’re going to see more of Mr. Dickerson since he was in town to rehearse with the Melissa Brooke Band. He’s just moved to Texas (Austin) from Virginia and is a breath of fresh air. I actually caught him in action again on Monday when he popped into Giggity’s with his guitar and gave us an impromptu show. This guy is really talented.
DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend… Tonight, Thursday, November 21st, the always amazing and usually irreverent Bob Schneider (Austin, TX) will play a show at Brewster Street Ice House with Micky and the Motorcars. Johnny Rodriguez I’ve seen Schneider will play at the grand perform many times through the years opening celebration of and he is a world Howard’s BBQ at its class act (although new location in Flour I’d definitely classify Bluff him as X-rated). AND THIS JUST IN… also on Thursday, country music legend Johnny Rodriquez
(San Antonio, TX) will be playing the Grand Opening of Howard’s BBQ on Waldron Lane in Flour Bluff. On Friday, November 22nd, Raeanne and the Ride is at Giggity’s, Billy Snipes is at Shorty’s, Uel Jackson is at the Back Porch and Ray T and the City Crew are at the Flats. On Friday, November 29th. Todd Dorn and the Sea Ashley Monical will play Drifters (San the Third Coast Theater Antonio, TX) will with Larry Joe Taylor on play Giggity’s, Jul November 30. and the Chrome Wheels (Austin, TX) will play two nights at Shorty’s, Larry Joe Taylor and Deryl Dodd will play Third Coast and Melissa Brooke will play the Back Porch. Also on Friday, there’s a big show at the American Bank Center with blues-rocker Joe Bonamassa. On Saturday, November 30th, Larry Joe Taylor and Ashley Monical will play Third Coast Theater, Melissa Brooke will play Giggity’s, Cruise Control will play the Porch and Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) will play Dr. Rockits. And on Sunday, December 1st, the Back Porch will close for the season with their annual TURKEY BOWLING competition. And since the only thing I get from being the TURKEY BOWLING CHAMPION of 2012 is bragging rites, I’m gonna brag. Last year I beat out over 70 turkey bowlers to win the title and I plan to take it again this year. The competition starts at 3:00 PM that Sunday and they will be selling all the beer for a buck to get rid of it. And that’s the truth!

men’s bodies. Just listen to them play Wayfaring Stranger and tell me they’re not channeling some ancient spirit. I can’t get enough of these guys. The sound they get with mandolin, fiddle and guitars (and sometimes stand up bass) is infectious. BTW, you can catch their lead singer, Garrett Wieland, hosting his weekly radio show on NPR called Some Call it Folk every Sunday. They’ll be back at Shorty’s on December 14th.
