Hippie James passes…
The island lost a good friend this week and so did I, “Hippie” James Hayes lost his fight to cancer. He was 49. James was a familiar face around Port A and a man with many, many friends. James was a soft Hippie James Hayes spoken soul with much love in his passed away this heart and only week.. good to say about everyone who crossed his path. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed.
Russell Edge/Aloha Dave/ Independent Thieves…
I was down for the count last week… as in sick as a dog. Thank goodness for antibiotics and homemade chicken soup. I can personally attest that I had, without a doubt, the snottiest nose in South Texas for five days straight. I was fortunate that my good friend nursed me back to the land of the living and did some running around town for me. She got some pictures and filled me in on what I was missing. She was able to stick her head in on a few shows and give me the lowdown. Russell Edge played Shorty’s last Friday and apparently it was pretty dull. I’m guessing the cold snap kept most people in.
The Independent Thieves played Shorty’s last Saturday.
Melissa Brooke/Carol Elliott/Riptide…
Melissa Brooke hosts an Open Mic every Monday at Giggity’s.
Russell Edge played Shorty’s last Friday.
once they get going and play for three and four hours straight. They have a repertoire that is high energy dance right out of a high school sock hop. They play a variety of rock-n-roll, surf, swing, honky-tonk, rock-a-billy and blues that covers Elvis, The Everly Brothers, The Safaris, Buddy Holly and on and on. You can only imagine how deep their set list goes when they play for hours and hours on end. There’s a nice big dance floor at Giggity’s and I think the Winter Texans and going to really embrace this Tuesday night deal. You can catch a sneak peek of Riptide this Saturday at Giggity’s. I really think Riptide will be a hit. They’re actually very good.
Robert Earl Keen/ Terri Hendrix & Lloyd Maines…
On Saturday, the pace picked up considerably. Giggity’s had Aloha Dave and the Tourists with rock star Ray Summy on electric guitar, and reportedly, the trop-rock show filled the room. So did my favorite string band, Independent Thieves over at Shorty’s. The Thieves have been on a roll since competing in the Battle of the Bands competition to play Ziegfest last October. They’ve secured a weekly gig at Doctor Rockits every Thursday and I see where they’re playing the House of Rock in January. Good on ‘em. That’s a great band. They’ll be back at Shorty’s on January 24th.
The brand new Open Mic hosted by Melissa Brooke every Monday also fell prey to a relentlessly dead island this week. Melissa did a good job of filling in the blanks and pretty much covered the evening by herself playing for two hours straight. It was nice to see local songbird, Carol Elliott, in attendance and favor us with a few songs. She’ll be back playing some regular Friday shows at the Tarpon Ice House in January, I’m told. Elliott is quite a hit with the Winter Texan crowd. And speaking of Winter Texans, Giggity’s will also be reaching out to our northern friends every Tuesday in January and February with some early shows (6:3010) and the non-stop 50’s and 60’s rocking of Riptide (Portland, TX). These guys don’t stop
Robert Earl Keen will play his annual Christmas show at Brewster Street on Jan. 26th. Robert Earl Keen, the undisputed musical ambassador of Texas, will play his annual Christmas show at Brewster Street Ice House on Thursday, December 26th. For the second year in a row, the remarkable Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines will open the show. Keen, a Houston native transplanted to Bandera/Kerrville, came on the scene in 1984 and has recorded 18 fulllength albums for both independent and major record labels. His songs have also been covered by artists from country, folk and Texas country music scenes (including George Strait, Joe Ely, Lyle Lovett, The Highwaymen, Nanci Griffith, and the Dixie Chicks). Keen was the first “Americana” artist to appear on the cover of Gavin Magazine when the style was officially recognized as its own genre in 1998. He was inducted into the Texas Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2012 along with Lyle Lovett and Townes Van Zandt. Keen’s band consists of guitar wizard, Rich Brotherton, Bill Whitbeck on bass, Tom Van Schaik on drums and Marty Muse on steel guitar. I’ve been to his Christmas shows at Brewster for the past several years. He plays all the sing-along anthems and doses the banter with enough Aggie rhetoric to kill a normal man, but last year the band showed up in costumes, dressed as their favorite Christmas characters. Brotherton came as Bing Crosby, complete with sweater and pipe, Whitbeck

showed up as Charles Dickens and Keen came as one of the three kings, complete with a crown and staff. Somehow it seemed amply fitting. Not to be outdone, Terri and Lloyd showed up in the world’s ugliest Christmas sweaters. I’m really wondering what they’ll do to top last year. One quick note, also last year one of the lovelier treats was when Keen’s band performed a handful of instrumental Christmas songs. All of these musicians are quite accomplished and I thought this segment of the performance was arguably the best part.
On the near horizon …
On the near horizon, look for shows on Friday the 27th by Lyrical Bynge at Giggity’s, Billy Snipes at Shorty’s, Ray T and the City Crew at the Flat’s, Ruben V at Doctor Rockits, Scarecrow People at the Executive Surf Club and Five Card Draw at Brewster Street. On Saturday the 28th, Shelley King the Melissa Brooke Band will be at Giggity’s and the will play Shorty’s on phenomenal Shelley King will perform at Shorty’s. You Saturday, do not want to miss Shelley Dec. 28th. King. I have been following her for over ten years and she has one of the most powerful and pure blues/ gospel voices in the free world. King plays internationally and continuously, recently coming off a national tour with a group of ladies who call themselves Girls With Bad Intentions (Lisa Morales and Robyn Ludwick). King also roams the planet on occasion with Carolyn Wonderland and recently recorded a new CD with members of the Subdudes. Shelley seems to have taken a liking to Shorty’s and puts on a heart felt performance every time she’s here. Trust me. She is a wonder to behold. ♪ ♫ And that’s the truth! ♫ ♪
