Plans for Residential Development Around Schlitterbahn Beach Country Resort Revealed

The first one came in over the Wild Horse Prairie at 9:17 on Monday evening and by 9:28 it was gone -justlikethat. Then just after 3 a.m. Tuesday morning the second spun in dark and menacing like a tax appraiser who missed his lunch hour. Some Night-Owl Islanders were still awake, others heard the clatter and ran to their decks to see what was the matter. Over on Cutlass Mark walked outside and by the light of the lightening flash saw a dark line of clouds with a shadow dipping menacingly down, while a few blocks away Randy saw the same scene from another angle. They and many others saw the tornado as it whipped silently across the backside of The Island and headed toward the Gulf looking for trees to uproot and houses to splinter. It found neither. The two separate twisters took roughly the same path and soared above the Padre Isles Country Club and headed for Mustang Island State Park where apparently they heard there were trailer houses to be had. But in the end it was much sturm and drang signifying nothing as neither touched down. Many Islanders said they believed they had managed to get a photograph of the storms by the light of the lightening bolts, but so far no one, us included, has been able to produce one. So if anyone was able to catch a fleeting shot of the Angry Tax Appraiser please send it along. It is said there are 7 billion people in the world and 6 billion cell phones but in this case it may be that none were handy.

By Dale Rankin The first drawings of the design for residential development around the Schlitterbahn Beach County Resort on the west side of SPID have been released. Here is the first look at preliminary design; what the portion of the planned residential development south of the waterpark would look like if it were built today. These plans are the first step in the process of reaching a comprehensive and approved development plan. The plan represents the first section of resort residential development affiliated with the Schlitterbahn Beach Country Resort which is scheduled to open in the spring of 2014 at the current location of Padre Isles Country Club.

The design calls for a mix of residential and other overnight lodging accommodations. Included are single-family units, multi-family units, waterfront and greenbelt products in addition the IslandWalk Village will contain retail, restaurants, and entertainment venues that will be supported by hotel sites and marinas for those who choose to arrive by boat. The resort’s initial phase will provide waterpark elements, golf, tennis, marina facilities, and other recreational amenities.

It started quietly as the sign went up unannounced at the Walmart in Flour Bluff. Gas for $2.78. It didn’t take long for word to get out and pretty soon a traffic cop was needed. Over the next few days the price at the HEB down the street fell to match the competition and the Flour Bluff Gas War was on. By sunup Tuesday the skies were clear and down at the beach the water was Chamber of Commerce Blue. Beach crews had cleaned the beach of seaweed and created wide hard-packed driving lanes which created some of the best beach going conditions and prettiest water we have seen in years. Out on the Packery jetties Redfish were racing each other to the bait offered by anglers and surfers were taking advantage of the breakers to harness the energy of Mother Nature to hitch their rides to shore. The weather was so good it lured Andre back all the way from his new digs in Daytona and Tuesday found him back with the Beach Bums holding down the SoPac beach. All in all it’s one of those weeks where we dig our toes in the sand and wonder what the poor folks are doing.

So long George We bid a fond farewell this week to two cultural icons: Lumpy Rutherford from Leave It to Beaver who passed away. In the real world Lumpy was Frank Bank who always referred to his father as Daddy. Lumpy had great plans but alas, Lumpy always had a great fall. So long Lumpy we hardly knew ye. Over in Nashville the King of Country George Jones went to that great honky tonk in the sky. As a young reporter this Moon Monkey was once dispatched to the Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum for a riot during the San Antonio Rodeo and Livestock Show. It seems old No Show Jones had done it again and the beerfueled crowed wanted their money back. While speeding eastbound on Houston Street he spied a Harley Davidson with a sidecar making good speed headed westbound toward downtown. As the two passed there was No Show, helmet-less and wearing shades in the dark with a blonde lady in the sidecar swigging from a bottle of tequila. “I wanna be that guy,” he told his editor, and after covering the riot he repaired to a downtown watering hole where he and others helped No Show polish off that bottle of tequila.

Some of our younger readers are probably not familiar with that term. As word began to spread the arms race began to cool and price began inching upward and as of this writing is at $2.90; still not bad in our $4 per gallon era.

Island Moon ArtWalk Set for May 11-12 Free to vendors and the public The next Island Moon Newspaper ArtWalk and Beach Market will hit the Michael J. Ellis seawall Saturday-Sunday, May 11-12. KIII Television and The Shark 106.5 radio will again sponsor guaranteeing plenty of exposure for the event across the city. The event is free both to vendors and the public. Kats-Dog Will Party Together… The annual Kat-Dog Mixer over at the Animal Hospital of Padre Island is on for Saturday. This marks the first year it has been held in May to avoid the summer heat.

The Life and Times of the S.S. Mary She lies forever at the bottom of the Aransas Channel By Dale Rankin Anyone that has been to the town of Fulton has undoubtedly seen the magnificent Victorianera Italianate Villa style mansion of George W. Fulton. Built between 1874 and 1877 the home is now a state park. The home’s owner George Fulton junior was a restless man of twenty-six years when he needed to “divert” his mind from the dull life he found in the area - the railroads were still a decade away - so wrote a diary; while it may have been a mere diversion for Mr. Fulton it provides a detailed look at a relic that since November 30, 1876 has resided at the bottom of the Aransas Channel where, buried in the sand, her remnants still lie today. To escape the tediousness of coastal life in the summer of 1873 Mr. Fulton set out from his home for Cincinnati and traveled the leg of his trip from Rockport to Brashears, Louisiana on the SS Mary, an iron-hulled 234foot sidewheel steamer built in Wilmington, Delaware in 1866 for the Morgan shipping line which for most of her ten-year career at sea would ply the waters from Brashears to

Rockport and other Texas ports.

At What Age Do You Fit Children with Contacts? My pat answer is age ten with exceptions. The parent’s major concern is “I don’t know if he/ she is responsible enough to take care of their contacts.” Nowadays that is no longer a concern because there is no care involved. For young kids I recommend the lenses you toss daily. There is no cleaning, disinfecting or contact lens case involved. The other concern is will they be able to insert the lenses. Usually the whole issue is brought about by the child so they are obviously motivated. Trust me, they will learn the unnatural prospect of putting something in their eye.

by Dale Rankin It’s been only six months since our city held its first November election and already the Corpus Christi City Council is dipping onto the partisan waters of national politics. It remains to be seen what the timeline will be but it seems inevitable that our city hall politics are headed for a twoparty split. To see how this partisan system of self governance works reference our Nation’s Capital and the Sequester which in effect is a decision by a politically hamstrung legislative process to put a gun to its own head and say, “don’t make me pull the trigger,” then do it.

Wearing contacts is ideal for children involved in sports especially those with more contact like soccer and basketball. For pre-teen girls I especially recommend contacts because, I know that for most, the glasses are in their backpack or purse during the school day. Those girls love me for convincing their parents they should have them. Of course, they are not the only ones that are known to not wear their glasses at school. In fact, often the teacher does not even know the student has glasses.

As of this writing it is uncertain if the Corpus Christi City Council at its next scheduled meeting on May 14 will vote on whether to vote to back a move to pass a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court Ruling in Citizens United, which effectively gave corporations the same rights as individuals when it comes to political contributions.

Contacts at age 8?!! I fit children at around age eight if they have very high prescriptions. Those thick glasses cause a stigma for the child especially at that age when kids can be brutal. Again the child is motivated and I will only fit them if they are the ones requesting not the parent. Besides appearance, with thicker prescriptions the patient actually sees better with contacts because it gives them more natural vision being right on the eye.

because that is how the world has always looked to them so do not wait for them to tell you they have an issue. Well, heck, I get adults every day who tell me they just cannot see up close but they also need a prescription for distance. It is because the near is so blurry after age 40ish they think their distance vision is still good.

Long story short All of you out there, get an eye exam. It’s alot cheaper than buying a bigger TV. That reminds me, I don’t hear anymore “I can’t see the TV.”

Potholes or Stealth Bombers? This is not to take a side in the Citizens United debate. There is plenty of information to be had in other venues for those interested in informing themselves on the pros and cons of that issue. The root of the debate is whether money equals speech in the political arena and if a corporation puts its money where its mouth is does it have to make that public? The fact is that after the ruling unprecedented amounts of corporate money have poured into political races across the country – for Presidential and legislative campaigns in particular. The advisability of that can be argued round or flat.

The debate pretty much comes down to this: The Mayor and the pro side of council action says to do nothing is to abrogate the greater public trust. The anti-side says why are we wasting our time on this when we can’t figure out how to pay for street repair and our opinion is not going to sway the nationwide argument in either direction. Further, this debate will generate more heat than light and produce rancor with no upside.

Mayor Nelda Martinez has been pushing for several weeks to put an item on the council agenda to vote on whether to back a resolution for a constitutional amendment to go behind the Supreme Court ruling. It is unknown at this writing if it will be there when the gavel comes down on the May 14 meeting. What we do know is that our mayor would like for it to be there and under our city charter it is the Mayor who sets the council agenda; if it isn’t there it’s because she knows she doesn’t have the votes to pass it.

The salient question here is whether our City Council has enough empty space on its plate to be spending time debating this issue; and if so, is this the best way to make use of that empty space and what are the implications for our city’s future governance?

The Democrat platform reads: “Our political system is under assault by those who believe that special interests should be able to buy whatever they want in our society, including our government. Our opponents have applauded the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United and welcomed the new flow of special interest money with open arms. In stark contrast, we believe we must take immediate action to curb the influence of lobbyists and special interests on our political institutions” One party is for the status quo the other is for reversing the status quo. What could possibly be more partisan than that? Last July in their annual conference in Orlando The United Conference of Mayors weighed in calling for an overturning of the court’s ruling and since then just over 250 cities have followed suit – 77 in Massachusetts, 64 in Vermont, 44 in California, 20 in Maine, 15 in Washington, 14 in New York, 14 in Illinois – 248 of the total are in six states. Fine states all, but states where city politics and partisan politics are interwoven to the point of being inextricable. The only city in Texas which so far has passed a resolution backing the Democratic position… wait for it…Austin; no surprise there. That’s what they do in Austin. In most cases the debate has rightfully been in state legislative bodies which are partisan by nature and through which the push for an amendment must constitutionally flow.

Guns or butter? The question for us is whether this is the road we want city governance in Corpus Christi to go down? I can’t say I remember any of the candidates in the council/mayoral races last November taking a stand on how federal political races should be funded. What I recall are promises to fix the streets, keep local taxes low, help small business, and try to grow the local economy. We elected them solely on the basis of their positions on city issues, with only a few exceptions we didn’t ask them who they favored in the Presidential race simply because it didn’t matter once they got to City Hall. When our current mayor spearheaded the move to push the city races to November my thoughts in these pages were that is was the first step toward political parties running slates of candidates on party tickets in city races. It seems to me this is the second, possibly inevitable, major step in that direction. So in 2014 when the next round of city elections comes around will the questioning go like this: “How do you intend to keep our street maintenance fees down? How will you grow the city’s economy? Will you legalize marijuana? Gun Control? Do you believe we should send air support to Syria? In the 2000 census our state grew at 14% while the Coastal Bend grew at just under 4%, in 2010 statewide population grew by almost 25% while we grew at…just under 4%. So much of the new prosperity in Texas has passed us by, until recently. All of a sudden we have found ourselves the prettiest girl at the ball; things are starting to roll our way. It seems that if there was ever a time to present a united front to the rest of the state, country, and even the world it is now. If our city politics become partisan the effect will be to bring Austin politics into the most mundane of city decisions which will in effect add another layer of bureaucracy to our decision making process and as a result, offer a divided face to the outside world. It is hard to see how that will help us more than it will hurt us. What happens – or doesn’t happen - at the May 14 council meeting will go a long way towards answering that question.

Light winds have sent me to the Land Cut to hold some Monster Trout. to the gas rigs in Corpus and Aransas Bays with live shrimp and doing well on specks and sand trout. The redfish in the flats are numerous but mostly smaller slot reds but drifting inside the big islands will give you a good time with gold spoons. The Laguna Madre’ is beautiful, clear and full of fish. Concentrate on the slightly dirty water and look for fish and bait to move out into the clear flats at sunset and during the night. The high tides have spread fish out and pushed schools of bait high against the shorelines and islands. Go way shallow and way deep to stay on the bite. The Intracoastal canal is the best place to find consistent action. First light with soft plastics and top water baits is a lot of fun. Wade or drift the edges with a trolling motor for some great good-morning bites. The shoreline south of Bird Island has been lonely, no crowds and lots of fish. If you want to get your feet wet with wading this is the best spot to start off. The shoreline is hard sand and very shallow. You don’t need waders because you can stand

in shin deep water and cast out into three feet of mixed grass and sand. Take some top waters, a few soft plastics, and a Mauler Cork with a gulp and you will be set. Explore and find your own secret spot. I like climbing up onto the tall sand dunes there and looking out across the Lagoon, everything seems to pass you bye when you are up there. The Land Cut is still holding some good trout, reds, and drum. The big numbers of trout are not there but its quality. Rocky Slough is good right up against the bank, but it is very easy to get hung up in the rocks. Don’t let the dirty water of Baffin frighten you away. Anglers with live shrimp and corks can make a big box of mixed species along with some limits drifting the shorelines and major rock piles. The Badlands is full of big redfish up shallow and will let loose a monster trout on you sometimes. The fish are there but it’s a bit harder to be consistent with the dirty water. But I’ll say this, no body is fishing it. Coming home is great when you live in Paradise. We all closed our eyes and took in a big breath as we came over the bridge and back home. There are beaches around the world but no where can you find the opportunities for world class fishing, hunting, diving, good surfing, water sports, and most of all just relaxing. I Love The Mailman By Riley P. Dog Well, my mailbox filled up this week. I got fourteen letters from a second grade class in San Antonio and that’s a lot for a dog. Here’s the first one from Ava.

I like my owner most of the time but I think they may be trying to starve me. I like just about any kind of food but hotdogs and catfood are my favorites, except of course bacon because all dogs like bacon. My humans keep trying to get me to eat green beans but I spit them out behind the television. I only like them if they have been dipped in bacon. How much do I like hotdogs?…if they have been dipped in bacon I like them a lot. Hey Mia. Happy birthday. I went to the beach

Rockport appears like a panorama in the distance but confound the ship – shakes so that it is almost impossible to write.” Sidewheel paddle wheelers were notoriously unstable in any chop, having been designed primarily for river work in shallow water with light seas. They were notorious for rolling in shifting seas digging one paddle-wheel into the sea while the other spun free. They were already being replaced by propeller-driven vessels. The Mary was built on the East coast, in Wilmington, Delaware in 1866 but had been rebuilt prior to 1872 and registered in New Orleans. Despite her length the Mary drew only 9.3 feet of water making her a good fit for the shallow water off the Texas coast.

Off the bar in Aransas Pass It’s not easy writing without thumbs. My nose gets really sore from hitting the space bar. I used to chase squirrels but now I live on the island and our squirrels live underground. Sometimes I stand in the sticker patches that we call vacant lots and I can hear those squirrels under the ground digging. It makes me crazy and my tail twitches but digging in a sticker patch is hard until you get past the top part and I learned that if you chase them above the ground you can never catch one but you will get a lot of stickers. They’re fast little boogers and I don’t have much energy these days because I’m on a diet. My humans say it’s supposed to be good for me but humans aren’t as smart as they think. Last week at the Back Porch I scored a whole hamburger patty from a tourist and they didn’t even know. I don’t know if my cats have names. I call them Dumb and Dumber – stoopid cats. I do like to dig holes but my yard is a wooden deck and a bunch of rocks so the digging is prettypaopek sreoaspofk,as[dp’fkasdfpikawejkjpoaidfkasd;k f;askdof;lkkasd;flksorry about that the stoopid cat just ran across my keyboard. Stoopid cats.kj sdlfjasdfja09ewrfujkla;sdjfoiasdnow she came back! They don’t get names – they can’t even type.

On November 30, 1876 Mrs. S. G. Miller was onboard the SS Mary traveling from Morgan City to Rockport and the passage had been hard, with bad weather and rough seas all along the way. “We were traveling over a choppy sea with the wind shifting from one quarter to another and causing the waves to run back and forth,” she said, “which made hard going for the ship.” last weekend and saw the sand sculptures in Port Aransas, they were big but when I ran on one I got in trouble. I don’t know how many articles I’ve made. I can’t count. I’m a dog. But I know it’s more than the number of hotdogs I’ve had since I started my diet.

My favorite sea creature is a dead fish because I can roll around in them and it makes me smell so good. I like dolphins too.

When a pilot boat was late in arriving the Mary’s Captain Benson decided to cross the bar, hitting a buoy that gashed the hull. When the pilot boat did arrive it was too late for the SS Mary. The crew of thirty and its eight passengers were saved but some horses were trapped in the wreckage and drowned.

My favorite dog toy is a chew bone. I like beans and jelly beans but when I get beans they make me go outside. I like ladybugs but I don’t like bees or flies because they make sounds like little motorcycles that make me nervous. I once tasted a man who was riding a motorcycle. He lives in a lighthouse. His name is Rick and he’s my friend when he’s not on that motorcycle.

Najmeh Griffin A jury has decided that the former owner of a Flour Bluff adult day care facility who was found guilty of elderly abuse should spend the next four years in jail. Najmeh Griffin could have received up to 10 years in prison on the elderly abuse charge, and up to a year on an assault charge. However, jurors decided on a one-year sentence for the assault charge. Both sentences will be served concurrently. The daycare facility she ran has since been shut down by state authorities.

Still visible in the 1880s According to an archaeological report by Charles E. Pearson of Coastal Environments, Inc. the wreck of the SS Mary was still visible in the 1880s but then storms and jetty construction removed it from view and a report by Steven Hoyt of the staff of Espey, Huston, & Associates in 1990 the SS Mary now rests “quietly on (the) edge of the channel slowly falling victim to corrosion, erosion, and dredging. As part of a channel improvement project, permitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, data recovery was conducted on the vessel in 1993. In 1995 a Coastal Environmental report found that the Mary’s proximity to turbulence of vessels makes her wreck somewhat perilous to explore. Divers have found that the wreckage is slowly sliding down the side of the channel and that the stern of the vessel is demolished and the rest of the wreckage is in very poor condition. However, according to the book From Sail to Steam published in 1998 by the University of Texas Press from which much of the information for this story is taken, approximately 170 feet of the hull remains at the bottom and more wreckage may be present under the clay bottom of the site. The recovery of a portion of the walkingbeam mechanism of the ship has enabled archaeologists to reconstruct her appearance. A total of 43 artifacts have been recovered from the site that include brass shells (casings), nails, and gunpowder and are on display at the Corpus Christi Museum. The Mary is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens say they detained 46-year-old James Vannoy last week at the Billings Dock near the JFK Causeway as he returned with a load of fish. Game wardens say he was using an illegal gill net to catch the fish. That type of net is similar to a volleyball net. The diamond shaped openings are designed to make a fish get stuck on their gills. The fish are unable to breathe and die in the net. This is Vannoy’s second arrest for illegal fishing in Nueces County. Back in 2007 he was sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Letters to the Editor Dead Birds Dear Island Moon, There were dead birds washing up onto shore at SoPac towards Padre Bali. We thought it might have had to do with the migration that flew in last week during the cool snap. Any idea as to what kind of birds they may be? House Fire Dear Moon and Fellow Islanders, On April 20th we suffered a significant loss due to a fire at our home on Gunwale Drive. We want to express our heart felt thanks to our fellow Islanders and friends for their support and good will during this time. We are okay and picking up the pieces and appreciate all of your good thoughts and wishes. We are overwhelmingly grateful to our fire department and first responders who performed exceptionally. They saved a lot of our stuff and it means more than they can know. We’ve been told if the new Aquarius extension was not there we would have burned to the ground. So ALOT of thanks for that. A couple with a six month old baby drove across the grass land of the GLO property just 2 miles south of Sea Pines on Friday April 19. They told me after fishing they returned to their vehicle and after starting the 4 wheeler a fire erupted underneath. They bailed and were picked up by Eric in his 4 wheel drive CC Police Department cruiser. They were about a mile west off Park Rd 22. The fire department responded later but by that time the fire had grown to several acres. This is the second time a vehicle has started a fire in the last 4 months in the grass lands south of us. Island Moon, I would like to just give the people who live on Aquarius and have children the heads up. The other day I was traveling down Aquarius towards Whitecap at 30 mph, the legal speed limit. There was a Pizza Hut delivery car behind me. It was a gray sedan which I am guessing was in a big hurry to deliver the pizza. On a residential street, in a no passing zone, where families live and children play, this idiot proceeded to pass me. I was really shocked as I was going the speed limit. Like I mentioned earlier it was a gray sedan and going too fast to get the entire license number but I believe the first three letters were CC7. I would like the Corporate Headquarters of Pizza Hut to know that if CC7 proceeds to drive like an idiot in a residential area, there is a big probability that one of those residents on Aquarius will be owning your franchise should someone be injured. Editor’s note: Last issue we ran a story about the television show Route 66 shooting in Corpus Christi in 1963. Moon, Mr. Rankin, as per our conversation on Mon AM, here’s a small narrative of the ‘Route 66” episode filmed in Corpus Christi in Jan. 1963. It was a cool, wet afternoon on a Friday in January. As a young 16 year old and Junior at the now closed Corpus Christi Academy on Lantana Road, we had an early release after a spiritual retreat which closed the Fall Semester 1963. Several classmates and I went to the HEB Tennis Center on Shely St to watch my cousin participate in a Tennis tournament. To our surprise, a person approached us and asked if we’d be interested in becoming “stars” on a national TV series. Totally unaware that the film crew from Route 66 was present, we hesitantly acknowledged approval. Five students portrayed members of a “tennis club” who pursued a young runaway after purloining a box containing the club treasury. This chase scene started at the Tennis Center. As expected early darkness in January extended the chase to the next morning and the directors admonished us to wear the same clothes and to meet at Corpus Christi Cathedral at a designated time. The chase involved running down the hill in front of the Cathedral and down a street towards the seawall. Since I had to work to attend the local Catholic High School, my employer graciously allowed my return to work later that Saturday afternoon. After several “takes”, we “extras” socialized with Martin Milner and the guest star, who was “Packy” on a Saturday AM program called “FURY”. We ate and conversed with the crews, and they graciously showed us the several Corvettes kept in safe storage in 18 wheelers. For a young 16 year old, the $25 paycheck was a welcome sight and afforded me to buy a pair of “Hush Puppies” shoes since I then worked as a “sack boy” at a local grocery store. The experience of appearing as an extra was gratifying then and the memories still remain. Dear Readers of the Island Moon, Thanks to the roughly 100 Dog Park Forum attendees, we were able to hear a wide variety of strong opinions and collect some good information to follow up on in the process. On one side there were those with serious concerns about the recommended location being too close to homes and how noise, smell and traffic might impact them now and if/when they should ever decide to sell their homes. On the other side were proponents who shared their first hand knowledge of how dogs are actually quieter in parks than their own backyards because they aren’t defending their territory, of how park goers are actually more responsible about picking up poop, and how one woman from Colorado saw her property increase in value after a dog park came to the area. Clearly there’s quite a divide. The good news is that both sides seemed to agree on one thing: that a dog park would be a wonderful addition to our community. The location was really the only sticking point, so our working group has set up time with the city’s Parks & Recreation Department to better understand some of the points brought up about the limitations set forth

in the city’s Master Plan for parks. We’re also actively seeking feedback from residents who have used dog parks in the past to share their experiences (good, bad or indifferent) so we can vett our research findings. Sunday I just couldn’t muster the will to get it together and head out there. I heard it was a big time with lots of people. Sorry I missed you again this year Capt. Steve if you still happen to be around. The offshore and nearshore fishing season will also kick off here this weekend. We’re looking at some flat seas this weekend, and everyone I know that has a boat will be headed out. Hopefully if plans don’t fall through I’ll be out there skidding the blue chasing pelagics myself. Wish us luck. I can’t believe it’s May already. Where did

Speaking of oranges, there was a run of oranges in Port A due to all the birds. Evidently everyone got wind that there were orioles around and wiped out the entire supply at the IGA. (I’m sure it wasn’t because anyone reads my article, but more along the lines of the coconut telegraph, LOL). HEB has them 5 for a dollar, and both Baxter and I fed more than 10 oranges each per day, and the birds continue to mow them down into the week here. Here’s a partial list of what we’ve seen IN MY BACKYARD the past few days; Rose breasted grosbeaks, Hooded warblers, Chestnut sided warblers, Orchard orioles, Baltimore orioles, Black chinned and ruby throat hummingbirds by the dozen, (watch out if you’re on my porch! Aerial dogfights are brutal and may involve innocent by standers!) Indigo buntings, Painted buntings, Hermit thrushes by the handful, Gray catbirds by the dozen, Several species of kingbirds (need to work on those), Tropical and northern parulas both, Yellow warblers, Common yellowthroats, summer tanagers, scarlet tanagers (picture by yours truly) Cerulean warbler, American redstart, black and white warblers, plus all the locals (cardinals, nesting kiskadees, doves, blah blah, etc etc)….and plus a couple of “what was THAT?” The cool fronts have been stacking up and actually giving us some rain too, which is great, we need it bad. As I write this early in the week, there is yet another front expected to be in by the time this hits press on Thursday. I expect yet another fallout to occur this Friday and Saturday, maybe even into Sunday, so if you weren’t able to take part in the excellent birding that occurred in the area this past week, you’ll have another shot at the title. I have to imagine places like Paradise Pond in Port A were elbowto-elbow with both birders and bird alike, so be patient (and quiet!) when you go. I missed Sandfest for the second year in a row. I was hosting our company’s yearly fishing tournament at my place on Saturday, and

By Jay Gardner I don’t know where to even begin folks, this weather lately has caused one of the best migration fallouts in recent memory. The entire town is buzzing about all the birds. I received no less than 4 phone calls last week with “come over, these orange and black birds are all over the yard, you gotta see this!” Indeed, there was (and still is as I write this) a large amount of Baltimore orioles in the area. In addition, the smaller, darker versions are the Orchard orioles. All you have to do is put oranges out somewhere you can see them from inside, and the birds will find them, I promise.

Accidents involving older drivers often call attention to the issue of older adults and driving safety. The facts alone may seem confusing. Statistics actually indicate that older adults are safe drivers, with high safety belt use and few citations for speeding, reckless driving or alcohol-related charges. However, medical conditions, medication usage and reduce physical function can increase the risk of accidents and injury among older adults. Factor in the sense of independence that driving represents for older adults, and you can understand why driving safety for older adults is an emotionally charged topic. CRAFTING CARING CONVERSATIONSWhen families discuss driving issues, they must assess the personality of the older driver, driving record, availability of transportation resources, geographic proximity, and long-term family relationships. The following topics can help you assess your family situation and have meaningful conversations about older safety.

However older drivers, especially after age 75, have a higher risk of being involved in a collision for every mile they drive. The rate of risk is nearly equal to the risk of younger drivers age 16 up to 24. The rate of fatalities increases slightly after age 65 and significantly after age 75. This higher rate is due to the increase inability to withstand the physical trauma that often accrues with age. Although older persons with health issues can be satisfactory drivers, they have a higher risk of injury or death in an accident, regardless of fault.

Take a 4 hour class Driver Safety class and qualify for an Automobile Insurance discount which is good for three years. These classes are taught by highly qualified volunteer instructors and are open to all licensed drivers. The cost of the class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for those who are not AARP members. ARE OLDER DRIVERS AT RISK?-As a group, older drivers are typically safe. The actual number of accidents involving older drivers decreases as age increases. Experts attribute this decline to self-impose limitations, such as driving fewer miles and avoiding night driving, rush-hour traffic and other difficult conditions. Therefore sharing the roadways with older drivers poses a relatively low risk to other drivers.
