By Dale Rankin editor@islandmoon.com We all breathed a sign of relief on Monday afternoon as we bade farewell to the 2013 Tourist Season. It was a big one and we have started gathering all the numbers to see just how big and hope to have those in the next issue once they are all compiled by the people who compile such things. We think it is safe to say that after this year’s record-busting tourism year we all had a bit of Tourist Fatigue. Judging by the turnout for Edwin’s Post Tourist Season Let Your Hair Down Party at Giggity’s last Monday night it looks like the folks in the service industry, while appreciative of the seasonal business the visitors bring, were ready to push in the clutch for a few months and coast on The Coast. One of the new ways we locals judge the crowd on weekends is by trying to get online on our cell phones. It’s a sociological fact that as passengers in vehicles approach the Packery Bridge heading OTB, everyone including the driver, will be on their phone, sending texts to the folks back home, or trying to get directions to someplace. When they hit the road they use up all the space on the cell towers and provide a snapshot of how bad the traffic is. It’s the New Island Traffic Gauge. If you can get online and stay online for more than about ten minutes at a time then the traffic is about a 4 on a 10 Scale and you can get to the store if you take the back route. If it takes more than ten minutes then it’s best to ride your bike. If you can’t get online at all just go sit by the pool because if you get out on the street you’re just going to be sitting in your car or dodging traffic on your bike.

La Posada Logo Contest

In a related matter, we’re told that the backups on northbound SPID between Whitecap and Commodores on recent weekend afternoon were caused by a faulty timed light at the Commodores/SPID intersection. It was fixed and then vandalized all in the same weekend and finally is now fixed, hopefully for good; so we got that going for us. We have our Island back and now we get two months of Chamber of Commerce Weather.

Reef on the way The new reef planned for water 73 deep off Packery Channel is close to becoming a reality. Current plans call for the SEA organization to begin bringing the reef out next Tuesday. A crane will begin loading the cement and other material and then begin hauling it to the spot about ten miles northeast of the Packery to deposit on the bottom. We Moon Monkeys are on hot standby waiting for word on when to go. Jay has a ride lined up for us so we can get pictures of the big event. There are two more similar reefs permitted and planned for the near future. These will add new attractions for fisherpersons and divers to enjoy. We send a Moon Attaboy out to the folks at SEA for making this happen.

South Beach Style The good folks over at Port Royal opened their new $4 million pool last week with a party that showed off a little South Beach style right here in South Texas. The pool features outdoor lounges and a newly enlarged swim-up bar. Go check it out.

Paddle for Parkinson’s Fills the Canal

It will be here before you know it! By Brent Rourk The Padre Island Yacht Club is sponsoring a contest to design the official logo for the 2013 La Posada Lighted Boat Parade and events. The winning logo will be used on both the official La Posada T-shirt and the new La Posada Flag as well as other La Posada sponsored events. The winning design must include the Island Symbol (the fish sculpture welcome sign you see when you come to the Island over the JFK). It should also include the words ‘La Posada’ and ‘Toys for Tots’ in the design. Other considerations include lighted boats, houses decorated in festive holiday lights and whatever else your own great imagination can create. The winner of the contest will be awarded a ride for 2 on a boat in the Saturday Night La Posada Lighted Boat Parade. The winner will also be included in all parties where your boat stops during the parade and be recognized in The Island Moon Newspaper as the Logo Contest winner for La Posada 2013. Logo designs must be submitted by October 15, 2013. Please email all designs to the La Posada Committee at 3rdcoastfred@att.net. Last year over 4200 toys were donated by those attending and contributing to La Posada events. Those toys, distributed by The United States Marine Corps, found welcome homes in Texas. I stood in the surf shop today and ran my fingers over the hand carved boards, imagining just how each one would slide over the sea. I was like a young boy, my eyes moving from one board to another. Each style and length made for a certain style of surfing, and types of waves. The most difficult decision is which one matches your soul. Problem number one is my soul could fall in love with any of them. We must have eight or more at our house but there is always room for one more. From the other side of the store I could hear Frank Floyd and his son Nathan talking to a couple about kayaks. These people were not grossly experienced by far, and I listened as Nathan asked them questions about what kind of uses and experiences they had envisioned themselves using the boat for. The 1916 Storm Wipes Out Island Houses

By Greg Smith Ninety four years ago on September 2 a tropical storm formed far out in the Atlantic that would change the Corpus Christi Pass and Corpus Christi forever. When Pat Dunn arrived on the Island after the 1916 storm he found nothing remained of his headquarters house on the Corpus Pass (now known as the Packery Channel) save a few pilings from the wooden foundation. The Island from The Sky The Island Moon Air Force took to the sky this week to get a bird’s eye view of the Island. So here you go…maybe you can see your house from up there.

By Bob Algeo Islander Bill Fintel has a Bucket List and for years flying around in one of these contraptions was on it, but no more. Sunday morning, August 18 Bill did his Wright brothers imitation and soared skyward in his Powered Chute from Aquarius Park. It was his second flight taking off from Aquarius Park and he said it was a little harder this second time, because of some wind turbulence. But he made the circuit and landed safely even though he bounced the nose on touchdown. Bill says his Powered Chute is built on a lightweight frame of aircraft aluminum, has a 60 horsepower Rotax engine with a four bladed propeller, it seats two and weighs about 500 pounds empty. He controls it with left and right steering cables, and the throttle controls the altitude and speed. Its gotta be a beautiful view, flying around like a bird over Padre Island!

Friday, Sept. 13, 7-9 pm, she will entertain her with country, rock and hip hop at this free concert. Melissa has performed as opening act for Josh Abbott Band, Pear Ratz, Pat Green, Cody Johnson, Turnpike Troubadours and more. She was nominated for “2013 New Female Vocalist of the Year” by the Texas Regional Radio Association. It will be held in the Patsy Jones Amphitheater in Roberts Point Park.

The Greenes were hit by a car on the 4th of July and have been recovering since. Both received trauma to their right leg/foot as they were on their motorcycle. Pam had one surgery; Pappy has had two. Both are healing much faster than expected, but have been out of work since the accident. Medical bills and no income have created a big problem for the couple. Pam has graduated to a walker and a boot; Pappy will be in a wheelchair for some time. Since he is the owner and sole operator of Pappy Motive Services, he has not had any income for more than two months.

Bring a chair, friends, food, and drink and enjoy an evening of musical entertainment as the sun sets over the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Yoga on the Beach

Both consider themselves extremely lucky as the prognosis after first [and immediate] surgeries was multiple surgeries and slower recovery. They attribute it to all the prayers of friends and family, the wonderful well wishing, care and help from the community and their constant looking on the bright side. They are grateful to everyone who has and continue to help them through this difficult time.

Cooler water will make it more fun to do the monthly Yoga on the Beach. Saturday, Sept. 14, meet yoga expert Nancy Myers for a free class courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department. Meet her at 8 am, next to Horace Caldwell Pier at end of Beach St. This event is held the second Saturday of each month.

Nevertheless, all the back-to-school excitement and the Labor Day weekend tend to put me in an end-of-summer frame of mind and I find myself looking forward to Fall. The autumn months are busy ones in Port Aransas with a calendar full of events. One of my favorites is the PA ArtAbout, the Port Aransas Art Walk. The 7th Annual ArtAbout is scheduled for October 19th, 2103, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sponsored by the Port Aransas Art Center, a 501 (C) (3) Non-Profit Corp. and The Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce the ArtAbout is held “to encourage and promote art and culture and let everyone know Port A is Port Arty!” Starting in Old Town and winding out the Island Road, aka Highway 361, this is a self-guided tour of these arty locations. Art-walkers can start the tour at any point and follow the map which will be available at all locations. Artists aren’t the only stops on a tour which this year includes boutiques, a museum and a cafe. It’s one open house after another with signature refreshments and gracious hospitality. The whole city seems to turn out for this making it a blocks-long celebration. Mid October is several weeks away but I got a chance to preview the ArtAbout. Australia. She had a stoneware pottery studio in Illinois for 25 years before coming to Port Aransas and opening Potters on Cotter. Until recently her expertise has been finishing and glazing. Achieving the soft, pastel “beachy” colors for which Potters on Cotter are known isn’t easy. As if making those unique glazes come out right isn’t enough Brenda has charged herself with learning to “throw” — building up roundly-symmetrical works on the revolving potter’s wheel. It’s something she’s finding to be a challenge but she’s excited about being able to create an entire work herself from start to finish.

Our final stop was the Mustang Island Art Gallery at 2222 Highway 361. It’s owned by Flint and Jill Reed and the gallery is also their studio, so Flint’s paintings and Jill’s pottery are well in evidence. Their art has taken them all over the world. They’ve lived Europe and on a boat in the Caribbean, as evidenced by the scenes in Flint’s paintings. However, since they opened the Port Aransas gallery in 2006 they don’t travel as much and Flint paints more local subjects. In addition to Flint’s oil and acrylic paintings, there’s paintings by Graydon Foulger, Sherry Wooley, Dalhart Windberg and others as well as watercolors. The gallery exhibits sculptures by Kent Ullberg, Jill Reed’s pottery, multi-media creations by Kathy Sayre, wood carvings, and photographs by Tony Amos. The gallery itself is just a pleasure to stroll through. The ArtAbout at the Mustang Island Art Gallery is always a delightful and well-attended party.

Next we visited Island Made Art in Suite G at 722 Tarpon Street. This gallery/studio is shared by Jan Dineen, Jane Gillette, Patti Yoachum and Debra Greenway who work in a variety of media. Jan and Patti gave us a preview of their latest creative enterprise: printed pillows. The artists begin by creating a painting. Patti likes to paint marlins while Jan is painting redfish. The women could paint directly onto fabric but would have to price the end result out of most buyers’ reach. Instead, they’ve discovered a technology that faithfully reproduces their paintings on various fabrics with all the true color and detail of the original. They can then fashion affordable decorative pillows and other items from the printed fabric. The Island Made Artists will be showcasing their latest creations during ArtAbout.

Last Christmas, one of the Marlin Academy kids asked her parent for Ms Pam for Christmas. She didn’t find out in time to do it, but was honored by the request. After the accident, her friends were trying to think of ways to help the couple and this idea came to mind, as Pam has a unique laugh. Pool Supervisor Bonney Maurer knew a place to order recording devise to use and the project began.

In nine months this site will be a waterpark. The new canals at the Schlitterbahn Beach Country project continue to push their way south (top left) where they will eventually connect with the existing canal system near the Cruiser Bridge.

Aquarius Wrong for Dog Park

As a longtime homeowner on the island---I would hope I qualify as a dog and pet lover. Both our dog and cats were strays and rescue animals. We give yearly to both Pewees and the Gulf Coast Humane society. Also---a huuuggge fan of Dr. Kresser---here on the island. I would love to see a dog park-------but not where it is proposed at Aquarius park.

When one reads about any successful dog park----on line---or better still go visit one, 2 things are in the forefront.

If you put a dog park here---on this very busy street, you will have all the folks that come to use this----especially those who do not live on the island-----PARK IN THE STREET…

1. The park should be away from any residence…It should not back up to 30 yards of one’s back fence.

The money could be better spent on a few cameras that would provide excellent evidence of wake breakers to TPW who could issue a ticket and video for the cops in case of theft. One important thing is getting the culverts open on Encantada so when the water exchange bridge is built, much better flushing (and fishing)in the canals would happen.One to two shifts a week split between Flour Bluff and the Island means four to eight hours of patrol time.How much is the Bluff kicking in?Two beers and your B.W.I.. Aquarius now has a walking/bike lane one each side…with it’s full completion. This now gets used a ton---as it should be. I see all kind of kids riding their bikes in these lanes---as well as parents walking with their kids---and then the joggers and folks just walking their dogs.

That is a guarantee…. It will happen….. When this happens---all the above folks who now use Aquarius …..listed above…will be forced to go out into a very busy Aquarius to go around the parked cars, you will have a child on a bike----hit by a car. It will not be the drivers fault----even if speeding. It will not be 100% of the child’s fault----as that child was just trying to go for a bike ride. It will be the fault---of putting a dog park---in a location----that should never have been… I am for a dog park—and it the right spot---will even help contribute financially to that….. But in the right spot---and Aquarius---is not the right spot. Thanks for listening….. Doug Snyder

Bali Better for Dog Park To our representatives: As a resident near Aquarius Park, I urge you to use Bali Park for a dog park location and not any of the parks located near homes. A dog park brings many disturbances including smell, noise, high traffic, and the frightening behaviors of dogs fighting for dominance when together. Locating a dog park away from homes and neighborhoods minimizes the number of people who are forced to put up with this. Further, parking for the dog park would have to be in the walking and biking lanes on Aquarius or on the sharp curves of Schooner Drive, neither of which is a safe option. We ask you instead to develop the Aquarius Park with paths and playing fields that all of our neighbors can use and enjoy. rocent@aol.com

Little Yellow Bug I saw a sad story in the paper about a little yellow ‘Bug’ being hit by the garbage truck. While I think it’s wrong and sad, I will say that I think these garbage truck drivers have a VERY TOUGH job here on the Island. There are so many cars and trucks parked on very narrow streets with little room to make tight turns. Also, many people will put out their cans tightly together so that the truck driver can’t get the ‘claw’ thing easily around the can. No easy solution. I’m just saying I do have a bit of sympathy for the driver as well. I doubt it was done maliciously. Jodie Scales

I used to have family members in Aransas Pass, and think your paper represents the relaxed, friendly life that many people aspire to have. But for me September is the month when I missed my chance to be on Late Night With David Letterman. I was working at the CBS station in San Antonio and Letterman’s producer sent out a fax – it was a while ago – asking for any dog stories that came along. Letterman was doing his Stupid Pet Tricks shtick and was looking for material. I kept an eye out for such opportunities because I had recently made $500 by answering a similar plea from the Oprah Winfrey Show looking for medical mistakes. The former City Manager of San Antonio went in for a hip replacement and they replaced the wrong hip.

Dog’s name is Lucky It was the last week of September and a cold front blew through. Any police reporter knows to listen carefully to the Fire Department scanner during the first cold snap because everyone in town with a gas heater turns it on at the same time. At least one exhaust vent somewhere in town will be stopped up by a bird’s nest or a squirrel or some critter and the carbon monoxide will find its way into the house while they are asleep and there will be some kind of a story; either multiple deaths or a hero story. I know it’s cynical but that’s life in the Big City. So when the call came in I dispatched a crew. Five people down. Crew calls back. Everybody okay. Saved by a dog. Yea Baby! Letterman money here I come. It got even better. The dog was a rescue dog that the family, couple with three kids, had decided they couldn’t keep and were looking for a new home. Dog’s name is Lucky.

My sisters names are Missy and Princess. They are Stoopid Cats. Stoopid even by cat standards. They are both fifteen years old and one of them is the mother of the other but they are albinos and I can’t tell them apart except the daughter sleeps on my bed and I have to sleep on the floor. I am completely confused about this. How can the mother and the daughter be the same age? It doesn’t make any sense. Cats are crazy. For a while I could tell which one was the daughter because she had claw marks on her back where the giant owl tried to carry her away and eat her. But it turned out that even Great Horned Owls don’t like my cats. I don’t understand why humans let cats in the house. When dogs take over cats will stay outside where they belong Paxton. Stoopid Cats. My favorite chew toy is a hotdog Paxton. A hotdog or catfood but I can’t get either anymore because Dr. Christi put me on a diet. And I don’t understand why cats get the mushy stuff and we dogs get the hard stuff. How did that happen? It just doesn’t make any sense. What tipe of dog am I Paxton? I’m a hungry dog. I’m on a diet and my humans are starving me. I’m withering away here Paxton. Can you help? Send one hotdog

I live on The Island. All we have are condos. Condos I say. Even our manchins are condos Paxton. Condos. Do I chase cats? Does a wild Pope live in the woods Paxton? Or a bear, or something. Of course I chase cats. I’m a dog. I don’t trust those little yappy dogs who think they are too good to chase cats. I see a cat I’m chasing it. Birds too. Not cars though. I almost caught a cat once but he was a fast mover and he outsmarted me and I fell into the canal. Stoopid cats. And after I lost some weight I snatched two tail feathers out of a heron who waited too long to fly. I never caught a car but that’s okay because I don’t drive anymore. I can’t see at night. And when my feet reach the pedals I can’t see over the dashboard. My humans said no more driving. Now I ride my bike. My favorite food? Whatever you can send to the Save The Riley P. Foundation in International Falls, Minnesota Paxton. They route it to me through Canada in a box with a plane brown wrapper that says “This is not Viagra” on the outside. Don’t send me Viagra Paxton. Stuff I Heard on the Island

September is a bittersweet time of the year for me. We don’t really have a fall season here on our sandbar; we just have two seasons – Hot and Not As Hot.

Well, Paxton I didn’t get to all your questions last week so here goes.

You can’t make this stuff up. Dog’s down on the floor where the gas is not so thick. He senses something is wrong and starts barking but his Humans don’t respond. Dog, somehow, someway, for some reason goes over to the phone setting on the floor and starts jumping up and down on it. It was one of those phones with the big colored buttons for Fire, Police, and Ambulance. He knocks the receiver off the hook and somehow gets the Police. Dispatcher says, “Hello, what is your emergency? “Bow. Bow Wow.” “Sir this is not funny” “Bow Wow Wow.” (Little Timmy’s in the well!). After a while the dispatcher traced the call thinking it was a prank and the police were dispatched to file a complaint. When they got there they heard the dog barking and broke in the door to find the humans all unconscious but breathing and the dog talking on the phone. Fire Department shows up and hauls everybody out of the house. You can’t make this stuff up.

Network Money The best part was that there was a recording of the call through dispatch. This was Letterman Gold. I pulled the fax out of my desk and called the number. I knew that when it came to the entertainment side of the house at CBS money was of little concern; I was going for the Perk Trifecta – trip to New York, two rooms at the Essex House (rooms are bigger than the Plaza), $2500 travel money. I talked them into stretching the rooms into three days. CBGBs here I come. They went for the whole enchilada.

The TV Gods were shining on me.

Meet the Boz Letterman shot two shows on Thursdays; the Friday show was done right after the Thursday show. Call time was 4 p.m. for a 7 p.m. shoot. Four airplane tickets, one for me, one for a photographer, one for the father, one for the dog – after all he’s the star. We’d shoot video of the dog riding in his seat for the show. Then when we got to New York more video of the dog getting fitted for a sweater and dog booties. When chances like this present themselves you got to milk ‘em man. Kirk Douglas and Boz Scaggs were on one show and Springsteen was on the other. Meeting Kirk Douglas didn’t do much for me but Boz was just about the coolest Texan there was then and The Boss was The Boss. I was looking forward to hanging out in the Green Room – with all the free stuff and The Boz and The Boss. Things were swinging my way. This is the stuff newsroom legends are made of. I got to the house and talk to the father. He’s a cook – if that’s the right word – at a Taco Bell. The house is a dump. It’s a mess. After a few minutes it was clear that the dog was the brains of the outfit. I tell the guy I’ll meet him at the airport at 10 o’clock the next morning and we’ll go over everything else on the plane. Then as I’m walking out he says, “What are you going to say when you get on the show?” “I’m not going to say anything. I’m not going on the show. You are. The dog didn’t save my life, he saved yours.” He turned the color of a chicken enchirito. “Me, why I don’t know what to say. I thought you were going on the show.” “Don’t worry. Letterman will prompt you. It’s what he does. Just answer the questions.” Enchirito white. Next morning Jan and I are at the airport with the newly purchased dog carrier and $2500 cash. She’s going to fly up the next day. Comes 10:15 – 10:30 no Taco Bell. I’m calling the house and it rings. Producer in New York screaming on the phone. We’ll have to take a later flight. I call the Taco Bell headquarters, guy didn’t show up for work last night. We drive to the house. No dog, no family, no Taco Bell. District Manager shows up, we’re calling his co-workers, next of kin, knocking on neighbors’ doors. No Taco Bell. By now the producers in New York are scrambling. It’s Wednesday morning and they got a Thursday night show to fill. Letterman is angry. Producers smell a rat, think I made the whole thing up. “No, I’ve got copy of the dispatch call,” I say. “I’ve already sent it to you by satellite. You have it.” Finally the newsroom calls, “The guy called and he’s freaked out about going on the show. He’s not coming.” I call the producer, “I’ll come on the show with the dog.” “The dog didn’t save your life you dumb hick.” I still think I could have talked him down out of the trees if I could have talked to him. I found out later he was at a friend’s house in Pleasanton. I had to send back the cash, and they cancelled the tickets. I guess someone else got my rooms at the Essex House. I didn’t make it to CBGBs, didn’t meet The Boz or the Boss. All I got was a lousy dog carrier and a story to tell in the Island Moon thirteen years later. Turns out the dog was the brains of the outfit.

ran the length of both sides of the structure, one side overlooking the Packery and the other side with a view down the vast pasture of Padre Island. After his son Burton’s harrowing ordeal of riding the ‘16 storm out on top of a sand dune a “storm house” was also built. This was a simple ten by ten foot windowless structure built of three inch thick wood planks. It was nestled in the dune complex near where the City water tanks are today on Sand Dollar. Little did Pat know that in just three short years the Island was going to be struck again Pat Dunn’s head of the Island camp house in the 1930’s. Will You Take Me Home? This kitten was born at the airport 9 weeks ago. He was born in a culvert with the rest of his litter mates. All the other mates fell prey to coyotes, and traffic. This kitten got under a dumpster and stayed put for three weeks. He would only dash out from under the dumpster when it was being emptied and dash right back under when the truck would leave. He would also hide up in engine blocks and we had a few instances of narrow escapes! He was finally captured ten days ago. Kitten now has his first set of shots done, he is very healthy. He loves to be around people, so far a gentle player and also does not mind being alone for extended periods of time. He has met a dog already and has done quite well. By Jay Gardner I had been hearing the juvenile cardinals for several days following around momma crying for food before I saw them. The cardinals had nested in my back 40 again this year, and I was anxious to see how many were in the brood this year. First one was a little male, and he’s a scraggly little guy, and I’m amazed that he even made it at all. I had heard something different moving around the family however. My fears came true when I saw the whole family come into my feeder the other day, the bright red male cardinal, the drab female, and the scraggly little guy followed by, what the heck?! A bronzed cowbird…. Cowbirds are brood parasites, which means that the female cowbird will find a nest of a different species of bird and lay an egg or two in it. This leaves the unsuspecting parents to raise someone else’s kids. To be sure, some birds figure it out fairly quickly and either get rid of the foreign egg, or go somewhere else and try nesting again. Cowbirds have a long reproductive period with a very short interval between clutches, so they can parasitize many nests in a season. So the cowbird was following my new buddy around, and both parents were feeding it my sunflower seeds, although you could tell they were favoring the young cardinal. One of the other adaptations that young cowbirds have is that they grow up a little quicker, and are much louder and aggressive than typical birds, which allows them to get more food. I was disappointed to see this occurring; however the cowbird will eventually migrate whereas the cardinals will mostly stick around. One thing I was not disappointed in the other day, however, was the mobilization of the contractor to get materials out to Lapp Reef (just off the shoreline of Goose Island State Park) and begin placing them. We got out on the Skimmer (a tour boat out of Rockport) and Capt Tommy and my good buddy Jay Tarkington took us out to see how the work was doing. The barge was headed out and finally began placing the materials. Dr. Jennifer Beseres Pollack was also along, and explained why they had a variety of materials to be placed. They had some smaller

boulders of crushed concrete to form the base so that the other materials wouldn’t sink into the mud and be covered. Then she had some river rock to spread over that to provide a cultch base. Some of the other reefs are also to receive a covering of recycled oyster shell on top of the crushed concrete. This will be an experimental reef with varying components that will be measured as time goes on to determine the best material to re-construct oyster reefs with. Kudos to you Jenni for getting this project going in the beginning, and I’m glad my CCA Committee could help out with some funding to make it a reality. Speaking of reef placement, next week should be the culmination of a project I’ve been involved with for several years. They finally are staging the concrete pyramids over there at Rincon in preparation for deployment here pretty quickly. There will be some concrete culverts deployed first, then 470 of those pyramids. I’m pretty excited to get some pictures, and that reminds me, I need to get the Donzi ready to get out there for the deployment too. Well, it looks like it’s going to be a pretty busy fall here folks, with a lot of great things going on, including Babes on Baffin and Blue Womens fishing tournament, the Poco Rojo Kidfish out at the hatchery in the Bluff, the Sharkathon fishing tournament, and a couple of other things that are currently slipping my mind. If you try to wedge in a few hunts for dove season, and maybe a couple trips down the Seashore, you’ll realize that your dance card is full, which doesn’t leave me much time On the Rocks. Hurricane Preparedness – Put Your Plan in Place By Todd Hunter, District 32 We are now in to the hurricane season and it is important to get your plan in place. Being prepared for hurricane season can help keep your family safe. The 2013 hurricane season officially began on June 1 and will end on November 30, 2013. It is during this time that most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic Basin pose a threat to the United States. Nueces is included among the 14 Tier One counties along the Texas coast. This means that these counties are most likely to be affected if a hurricane makes landfall. It is important that our area, as well as all Texans, prepare for hurricanes by staying informed, creating a disaster plan and following necessary steps to keep their families safe. When hurricanes make landfall or get close to land, they can affect the lives of thousands of Texans along the coast and across the State of Texas. There are various tips on being prepared in case of a hurricane. Some of the tips include the preparation of a family disaster plan. A family disaster plan includes planning for hazards that could affect your family as well as home. Vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind should be reviewed. You should locate safe rooms or places in your house to store items if a hurricane hazard develops. It is important that families determine evacuation and escape routes from your home and places to meet in case of an emergency. Also, have an out-of-state friend as a family contact so that all family members have a place of contact. Don’t forget to plan for taking care of your pets in case of evacuation. In addition, families need to create a disaster supply kit. A disaster supply kit includes gathering blankets, pillows, seasonal clothing and special items for infants and the elderly. Please have flashlights, batteries, telephones, radios and sufficient tools in case of an emergency. It is important to have a good first aid kit with medicines and prescription drugs ready and organized.

It is important to strengthen the outside of your home so wind and objects do not tear openings in your roof or walls. Some people may want to find out about flood insurance. The National Flood Insurance is a pre-disaster flood program designed to reduce flood disasters. The National Flood Insurance program can be called at 1-888-CALL-FLOOD, Extension 445. In addition to getting your family, pets and homes safe and prepared, there are various state websites for hurricane preparedness and evacuation, including telephone numbers. Effort to reopen Cedar Bayou gets $1 million boost

Natural fish pass closed during 1979 oil spill to get money from offshore drilling The decades-long effort by fishermen and coastal experts to reopen a natural fish pass near Rockport is getting a $1 million boost from the Texas General Land Office. Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson today announced he will award $1,071,032 in funding derived from offshore drilling in federal waters toward the effort to reopen Cedar Bayou. “Reopening this natural fish pass will restore the connection between the bay system and Gulf,” Patterson said. “It will be good for the whooping cranes and good for fishermen.” Cedar Bayou and nearby Vinson Slough connect the Aransas and Mesquite bay systems to the Gulf of Mexico. That connection was closed in 1979 to protect the bays from a massive oil spill caused by the Mexican state oil monopoly Pemex. Since then, coastal experts, activists and fishermen have worked to restore the natural connection. The partnership to reopen Cedar Bayou, led by Aransas County, includes the Coastal Conservation Association, the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s

Here’s a look at some of the new laws that take effect today: Boating: As we wrote in the last issue it is now illegal to uproot seagrass with a motor boat propeller. Switchblades: A new law ends a decades-long prohibition on the knives. Since the 1950s, it had been a Class A misdemeanor to have, make, repair, sell or transport a switchblade in Texas. See HB1862 for details. Indoor tanning: Texans under 18 may no longer use indoor tanning beds — even if their parents say it’s OK. Before now the age limit was 16. So there will be a lot of pale 17 yearolds. Drones: It is now a crime to use an “unmanned vehicle or aircraft” to take photos or videos of people or private property — with the goal of monitoring or conducting surveillance — without permission. This new law makes it a Class C misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $500, to photograph or video private property without the owner’s or occupant’s consent. Drug tests: Some Texans seeking unemployment benefits must take drug tests. Texas Workforce Commission staffers will create a system that will lead to drug tests if answers to a questionnaire show potential drug use. People who refuse or fail the test won’t receive benefits until they pass it SB21. Farmers markets: The next time you visit a farmers market, you may find samples, cooking demonstrations and more. The $1 million Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act funding Patterson awarded will bring Cedar Bayou backers to within $1.3 million of their final goal. The General Land Office has contributed nearly $1.4 million to the cause, cumulatively. Bays and estuaries serve as nurseries for the Gulf of Mexico’s juvenile shrimp, redfish and many other marine species. Restoring the hydraulic connection between the Aransas and Mesquite bay systems with the Gulf of Mexico will re-establish their life-cycle migration route. It will also bring nutrients to thousands of acres of tidal wetlands and allow mature blue crabs — the favorite diet of the endangered whooping crane — to return to the bays to spawn. The effort to reopen Cedar Bayou enjoys support from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Aransas County.
