By Shae Campion We were hoping you might be able to help us out. Our 50cc scooter (my husband’s main mode of transportation) was stolen from the Beach Club Condos parking lot Monday or Tuesday. We parked it in the side parking lot where all residents are instructed to park their boats and recreational vehicles. If anyone has seen it (it is very easy to spot with large Source Mage decals on the sides), please notify the police as we have a report filled with them. Thank you for your help.

Those Monstrosities
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon The baseball glove or “mitt,” as they say in the East consists of twelve pieces of leather cut from a pattern, like a dress. The fingers, palm, and thumb are attached wrong side out, with welted seams. The mitt is then turned right side out, and the lining, padding and heel are inserted into the mitt. Cowhide or rawhide is used for lacing the outer pieces together by hand. The trademark, name of player and stock number are then stamped on the shell and web. Next, the glove is placed over a hot forming iron and pounded into shape. Gloves are made in both the United States and in the Far East. Only smooth, flexible hides are chosen for durability, feel, and performance. The life of a glove depends on the character of its hide and the care it receives from its owner.

wear what he called “those monstrosities,” in 1894. He claimed that it spoiled the game and diminished the hand skills of the players. He barely stopped short of using the word “coward” and suggested that players using gloves collect only a portion of their salaries instead of full pay. By the early 1900’s, gloves were being used by all players, and many innovative changes began to occur. Size and color of the gloves changed, as different companies began to compete for the glove business. Babe Ruth wore his famous white glove, while playing outfield for the Boston Red Sox. Ken-Wel, MacGregor, J.C. Higgins, Spalding, Rawlings, Nokona, and the Draper & Maynard Company are a few of the early glove manufacturers. Now companies like Wilson and Mizuno have joined the fray.
Rawlings production chief, William P. Whitley, was approached in 1919 by a right-handed “spitballer” from the Cardinals, with an idea to create a naturally-formed, deep pocket with an oiled palm. The Bill Doak glove made its debut in 1920 and stayed in the Rawlings line until 1953. Other innovations took on strange names but were a hit with the players. The Trapper Mitt, Deep Well pockets, V-anchored webs, and the Edge-U-Cated heel were designed between 1922 The first so-called mitts can and 1959. By 1886, gloves with fingers were line drive back to the box without a glove, or being sold, and players were using one glove Mike Trout going over the fence for a fly ball more often than two. barehanded? How about Jose Reyes going Gloves have changed in many ways since the first patent was issued for the “Base Ball Catcher,” on March 22, 1904. This invention was made of wood and wire. It was designed to be worn by a catcher on his front and had hinged doors that opened inward when hit by a ball. The catcher then retrieved the ball by reaching into the side of the wire box. Needless to say, this invention was not used very long.
Outfielder and infielder gloves came into general use understandability much later than the catcher’s mitt, and pitchers were the last as a group to wear gloves during the game. The first larger pillow-type mitts were used by catchers William “Buck” Ewing of the New York Giants and Lave Cross of the Philadelphia Athletics. A bit of trickery was also used by catchers with large gloves. In an attempt to intimidate enemy hitters, catcher Ossie Schreckengost soaked his mitt in water before catching fastball pitcher, Rube Waddell. When the ball hit his mitt, a loud crack could be heard all over the park.
Those monstrosities With the expansion of U.S. territory out West, in the late 1890’s, and the explosion of the game’s popularity, only then did the use of gloves come under fire from the old guard. It had now become apparent that young baseball players could catch and field with gloves as well as, if not better than, the veterans could, barehanded. Boston’s Harry Schafer blasted the game of baseball for allowing players to
into the hole with no leather, or Buster Posey squatting behind home plate with two empty hands, waiting for an Aroldis Chapman fastball? Thank goodness for those monstrosities. Tim Tebow Offered 3-Year Contract by Arena Football League’s LA KISS By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com Dotson’s Note: I couldn’t pass on this one last story about Tim Tebow. It very well may be the last new football story about this young man who should soon be finding a career outside of football. Since being released by the New England Patriots prior to the 2013 NFL regular season, there has been plenty of speculation about where quarterback Tim Tebow could land. Well, if rock-and-roll legends Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have it their way, he will be joining their new Arena Football League team. According to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, the L.A. KISS have offered Tebow a three-year contract: The L.A. KISS -- yes, KISS bought an AFL team -- has offered Tim Tebow a three-year deal. KISS wouldn’t pull a publicity stunt, would they?

Based on how poorly Tebow performed during the preseason, though, playing a year in another league may be a viable option. After all, there is little doubt that the KISS would start Tebow and give him every opportunity to succeed.
Tebow all but confirmed that notion upon being cut loose by the Patriots, making it abundantly clear on Twitter that he is not done chasing his dream of being an NFL quarterback.

As incredible as Tebow playing for the KISS would be for sports media, it just doesn’t seem very likely. Back in May, Mike Garafolo of USA Today reported that Tebow was not prepared to accept an offer from an AFL team—or even a Canadian Football League team, for that matter.

Phyllis wanted not only to write the story but illustrate it herself so that put her on the road to selfpublishing. She was somewhat familiar with self-publishing as her son, Britt of the Britt Lloyd band, had put out his own CDs through CD Baby, an online independent music store. In 2011, CD Baby launched Book Baby to focus on independent book authors and distribute their work digitally using a model similar to CD Baby. That made Phyllis’s decision easy; she would publish using Book Baby.
by Devorah Fox Most kids have vivid dreams. Some are pleasant and some are scary. Some are even so intense that they haunt the dreamer into adulthood. Interior designer Phyllis Sayre had one such dream as a child. In it she was being threatened by a wolf. In the dream, a friendly rabbit protected her by singing which would cause the little girl’s bed to fly away and carry her out of danger. Fast forward a few decades. Phyllis is now a grandmother and reading children’s books to her little ones. She’s finding herself underwhelmed by what’s available. It seemed to her that the artwork in many of them had “too much going on” which took away from the story. Further, as a designer she found the layout disappointing. Her desire to provide her grandchildren with something that measured up to her standards merged with a lifelong ambition to write and illustrate a children’s book. Add the childhood dream of the flying bed which she could still recall and the idea for a book was born. The window of opportunity opened last summer when her design business hit a seasonal slow period. She ran the idea past her granddaughter who liked the basic concept. Once Phyllis started writing she found she couldn’t wait to finish the book. Phyllis was encouraged when little Callie picked up on the heart motif used throughout the illustrations. Callie suggested that Phyllis change the name of the heroine but Phyllis was wedded to “Glitter” and overruled that objection. Phyllis’s first exploration of the children’s book business revealed an unfortunate truth. Most children’s books publishers have a stable of artists who do the illustrations. The publisher may take on a story but will assign illustrating it to an artist they’ve worked with or with whom they’re familiar.
Wanting to make her book available not only in print but as an ebook made even more decisions for her. In order to ensure that it would appear the way she envisioned it she would have to use a fixed layout and work within Book Baby’s production guidelines. She further learned that the best length for picture books intended for 2to 6-year-olds was 30 pages. The print edition of Glitter’s Flying Bed (ISBN 978-1619274648) became available on amazon. com in August, 2013. It’s 11 inches by 8 inches with a soft cover and in full color and sells for $14.99. You can also find copies at the Port Aransas Art Center and the Rockport Art Center. The ebook is due out in September, 2013. Summer’s over, the fall redecorating and remodeling season is heating up and Phyllis is hanging up her author hat to turn her attentions to interior design... but not for long. She has in mind to do a second book. She may make a series out of Glitter’s Flying Bed and write further adventures, or start something entirely new. To learn more about the book visit the Web site at glittersflyingbed.com, send an email to psidesignedint@ yahoo.com or call 361-7299030. Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
You heard it here first… Coast Club proprietor, Joe Webb, is blowing this pop stand. Color him out of here. The new owner, Rick Nelson, took control of the popular island watering hole last Friday. Webb, a San Antonio native, opened the Coast Club eight years ago and after 18 Joe Webb years in Port A, will welcomes Rick return to the Alamo City where he plans to Nelson, the new be playing a lot of golf owner of the and not worrying about orders. Rick Coast Club in liquor Nelson and his wife Port A. Sherri moved to Port A from Dallas where Rick was a VP in the corporate world. They plan to open a kitchen in their new digs and develop the smoking patio into a bigger, nicer space. Oh… and most importantly, they do plan to keep live music going at the club. Congratulations Crazy Joe… we’re going to miss you and don’t be a stranger! And welcome to the island Rick and Sherri… you’ve bought yourselves a mighty fine club, there.
Who’s up for a road trip? I whine and whine and I whine about the tourists and as soon as they leave, I miss them… well, sort of. It’s been nice not having to fight the traffic and the crowds on the beach, but the grim reality for me is it’s the massive number of seasonal visitors that ultimately finance the higher profile acts I cover all summer long. If you look at the music calendar at the bottom of this page, you’ll notice the live music line-up on the islands are now dominated by local bands and repeat regional acts. We’re at the time of year where I’m forced to get off my lazy duff and go looking for interesting shows to tell you about… and that’s a good thing. So, now it’s time to stretch out and go into Corpus more often as well as taking some road trips to Austin and San Antonio to see what’s new. It should be fun to see what the rest of the world is up to. I tend to get tunnel vision here on the island.
Mikel Mays opens on Padre Island… There’s a new live music venue on Padre Island which is the pier house at Bob Hall Pier. Enter Mikel Mays Beachside Bar and Grill, formerly known as Barnacle Bills. The county spent a ton of money (like a couple of mil or there abouts) to add on an adjacent building next to the old pier house and move the kitchen and renovate the place and it’s great. They have “garage door” type doors all around the building that open up to a panoramic view of the dunes, the

beach, the Gulf and the pier. It’s actually quite a spectacular sight, especially when you add the comforts of a full bar and live music. They’ve been having live music on Friday and Saturday nights and Saturday and Sunday afternoons by such local favorites as Ruben Limas, John Eric, The Daze, The Rockaholics, Now and Zen and Christian Colbert. The prices are geared towards locals and are quite reasonable. They plan to have a full service restaurant open by early October serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and will eventually offer a Sunday champagne brunch and sushi bar. Owner May Nardone had this to say, “My goal is to become the place for great food, cold drinks, local live entertainment while overlooking the beach from Bob Hall Pier and enjoying the best view of the Gulf. We want Mikel May’s to be where everyone wants to come and celebrate special occasions and create lasting memories.” Trust me, this is a very cool place right on the beach. Check it out!
Aloha Dave / Jul & the Chrome Wheels…
Jul and Brandon Jolley of the Chrome Wheels played Shorty’s this weekend. I did my duty last weekend and ran around town to catch a few shows. Aloha Dave and the Tourists (Corpus Christi, TX) played the Back Porch on Friday. That’s always a kick in the head to watch the animated antics of guitarist, Ray Summy. He wins the “best contorted face and rock and roll stance” award, hands down. When I was leaving, they were playing Wooly Bully… always a crowd pleaser. After the Porch I wandered over to Shorty’s to see Jul and the Chrome Wheels (Austin, TX). This band consists of the married couple of Brandon and Jul Jolley, an exceptionally soulful couple indeed. Brandon pretty much goes through life with an arsenal of harmonicas strung across his chest like an ammunition belt, ready for any musical encounter, any time. He also plays hand drums and Jul plays an impressive guitar… they both sing like there’s no tomorrow. The locals have embraced these guys and the porch at Shorty’s was packed both Friday and Saturday.
Dillon Stowe and Bron Doyle gave a great percussion demonstration at Shorty’s last Saturday.

On Saturday, they had local percussionists Dillon Stowe and Bron Doyle backing them. At one point, Dillon and Bron took a drum solo that sounded like a full African drum band… super rhythmic and fluid! I had no idea Bron had it in him. He’s a bad mammer-jammer on those congas. You might know Bron from his golf cart rental on Avenue G.
The Toman Brothers… Randy and Russell Toman (aka: The Toman Brothers) from San Antonio played Giggity’s last Saturday night. These guys were the late Gary Stewart’s road band for many years. Back a couple of lives ago, I used to manage honky-tonks in San Antonio and was very close with all these guys (circa 1984). Gary Stewart, in case you don’t know, was Time Magazine’s “King of Honky Tonka” and had a string of million selling hits in the 70’s (Taking Me a Whiskey Trip, She’s Acting Single, I’m Drinking Doubles,, Drinkin’ Thing). There was a point in time when I ran around the country with Stewart and the Tomans and found myself in quite a few interesting situations… make that hysterical. One such situation involved watching Gary throw little cartons of milk off the top balcony of the Omni Hotel on Shoreline Drive in Corpus and scrambling to hide when he hit a cop car and milk splattered everywhere. Their show at Giggity’s was a trip down memory lane for me. I hope they bring ‘em back some time soon.

On Thursday, September 19th, Texas gubernatorial candidate, Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jew Boys will play the Gaff at 8:00. There Mandy Rowden and will be a Pirate Parade in Billy Abel will play the streets of Port A from 5-7. Kinky’s show promises Shorty’s this Friday. to be one of the highlight shows of the year. Tickets are $30 and well worth it. Partial proceeds from this concert will be donated to Kinky’s Utopia Dog Shelter near Utopia, TX. On Friday, September 20th, the reggae band, Flat Broke (Corpus Christi, TX) will play Giggity’s, the great string Mike Milligan and the band, Independent Thieves Christi, TX) will Altar Boys will play (Corpus play Shorty’s and the Rusty the Back Porch on Brothers will play the Back Porch.
