PREMIER OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
CEO AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE
DREAMBIG CREATIVE PRODUCER
MANAGER, ARTS PROJECTS – DECD
With a new name in 2016, DreamBIG Children’s Festival will engage with children and their families from across South Australia, and I am looking forward to a successful event.
It was an honour for Adelaide Festival Centre to produce South Australia’s beloved Come Out Children’s Festival in 2015. The highly successful nine day festival engaged with over 100,000 children and their communities and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from schools and families.
Welcome to DreamBIG, SA’s festival for schools and families that is amongst the biggest, brightest and boldest of its kind in the world. The name might have changed but DreamBIG continues its proud history.
Learning in the Arts leads to improved achievement in maths, reading, writing, creative problem solving, critical thinking, speaking skills, concentration, confidence, teamwork, motivation and attendance at school. The research continues to show us this and arts teachers will have witnessed it. What better way to celebrate these findings than with a festival dedicated to children and young people?
Some shows will be taken to schools in regional areas, allowing students greater access to the Festival. Some shows are already scheduled to visit Coober Pedy, Renmark, Goolwa, Lameroo and Mt Gambier. In partnership with the Children’s Literature Festival in Pakistan, students in South Australia and Pakistan will exchange stories, photographs and drawings about their lives and the books they read. Their correspondence will feature in Hello Pakistan. Engaging with the arts brings great joy to our children, and it contributes to their intellectual development and wellbeing. The opportunities for creativity and artistic expression that stem from a festival such as DreamBIG cannot be overestimated.
In 2017, we are pleased to continue the tradition of the festival with its new name and we look forward to bringing DreamBIG Children’s Festival to children and families across South Australia. Adelaide Festival Centre’s suite of festivals bring people together through art and culture and DreamBIG Children’s Festival is a wonderful accompaniment, encouraging young peoples’ participation in the arts and inspiring children of all ages to think creatively and dream big.
The theme this time is Feed the Mind. Feeding the hungry minds of children with a multiplicity of arts experiences is vital to their development. It’s a proven fact - an arts rich education benefits children now and into their futures. This festival is a celebration of how creativity can nourish, challenge and burst open the minds of students with new ideas, questions, wonder and fun. I hope you enjoy looking through the program which is packed with performances and workshops of all kinds. I’m sure you will find something your students will enjoy, grow and benefit from. In the words of Clementine, the 8 year old responsible for our new name, ‘you need to dream to create... you need to DreamBIG to create something AMAZING’.
Young people can ‘feed their minds’ with a broad variety of arts experiences and all kinds of things vital to creativity and critical thinking. Access the regional touring program, statewide projects, learn the new DreamBIG song, see a show, indulge in a workshop, be absorbed in an exhibition, – there’s something for everyone! Perfectly timed, DreamBIG Children’s Festival will coincide with UNESCO’s International Arts Education week too. How will your school share in the global recognition of the importance and value of our Arts?

DreamBIG Singing opening event
In an event that is fast becoming a festival tradition, 2000 school children from primary schools around Adelaide will create the Mighty Choir of Small Voices and sing a newly composed song – DREAM BIG by Robyn Habel – to celebrate the re-naming of Come Out Children’s Festival as DreamBIG Children’s Festival. This year’s theme is Feed the Mind and we are transforming Adelaide’s footbridge into one big neural pathway. Gathering at Adelaide Oval for the song, the children will then chant, dance and walk their way across the footbridge towards Adelaide Festival Centre beneath 20 large parachutes designed and decorated by 20 regional schools (during Term 1) with images describing all the wonderful things that can feed our minds. These parachutes – our giant pathway of inspiration – will be held aloft by 100 retired teachers as a guard of honour, acknowledging their instrumental role in feeding the minds of our children. This joyful event will meld metro and regional schools in a cross-generational and symbolic celebration of the way arts feed our minds for a lifetime.
STATEWIDE
Schools across SA can choose to perform the song at their school assembly and register it as an event in the festival for ‘Over to You’. See page 43

It all starts when Chloe, just about the loneliest girl in the world, makes friends with Mr Stink, the local tramp. Sure he smells a bit, but he’s the only person who’s ever been nice to her. So, when Mr Stink needs a place to stay, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed. Now Chloe’s got to make sure no one finds out her secret, but she’s about to learn that some secrets have a way of leading to disaster. Jump first, ask later
directed By Byron Perry
Urban dance meets parkour in this true story about how young people can achieve great things through different creative pathways. Jump First, Ask Later embodies the spirit of Parkour. This powerful work tells the collective stories of six young champions of Parkour – stories of first and second-generation Australians overcoming social isolation and stigma through movement. It may be an adrenaline-pumping extreme sport, but at the heart of Parkour is a mindset of creativity. Scrambling, jumping and tumbling through the urban landscape; Parkour sets up a notion that the obstacles you encounter shouldn’t be avoided but rather deliberately engaged with in order to find your path – ‘jump first, ask later’. Responding to the environment through Parkour has changed a community and the young people in it. This show is real life for students; it is their weekend, their backyard, their streets. To engage the disengaged, inspire the uninspired and give students the opportunity to consider issues that belong to their world, this show is a must-see. Image: Peter Plozza

HART
HART shares the silenced stories of our country in a way which is both meaningful and accessible. “I was always like, like a magnet with my Dad, like everywhere he went I was right next to him… He never got rid of me…” Between the years 1900-1970, an unknown number of Indigenous Australian children were forcibly removed from their families. Parents driven mad, grandparents heartbroken, siblings torn apart, language lost, and culture stripped away. Using testimonials from survivors of the Stolen Generations, Noongar man Ian Michael shares the silenced stories of this country in a multi award winning performance that is matterof-fact, heartfelt and accessible. Your students will be drawn into a moving performance which gives a voice to members of our community who have often been silenced. THE CHILDREN'S REPUBLIC OF ADELAIDE
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE
The children of Adelaide unite to create their own country. If the children of Adelaide joined together and made their own country, what would it be like? The Children’s Republic of Adelaide starts from exactly that idea. Your students will engage in critical and creative thinking as they discuss the foundation of an ideal nation. What will the rules be? Which values are important? Participants will decide the laws of South Australia’s first micro-state and design its national flag, constitution and coat of arms. Artist Ben Landau encourages student autonomy during the workshop, empowering them to make decisions. Adults are framed as assistants, and will pose questions rather than lead the interaction.

Calling all twoyear old children and their adults!
Rain is an interactive performance installation for babies and their carers. Grownups and their littlest ones are immersed in an installation space full of surprise, delight and opportunities for connection through music, touch and performance. Two performers and a cellist create a space that welcomes babies, drawing them in and allowing them to relax and take in the sights and sounds. Parents, caregivers and babies will wonder and wander together in the rhythm of the rain. By Drop Bear Theatre, The Seam & Edwina Cordingley
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Touch & Go is a dancing game of cause and effect, dedicated to the mighty two-year old. Touch & Go entices, dares and entertains children in a playful environment. 2 year olds are invited to enter a playful world of shapes and pathways, stepping stones and lines, with two friendly dancers and a live guitarist. The children become part of the performance themselves or observe from a safe distance, touching and going - just as they need to.
*PLEASE NOTE: pre walkers only. Walking babies are not suited to some elements of the installation.

paper planet Let your imagination go wild in a world made of paper.
Paper Planet allows for theatre and play to merge as children discover an imaginative world of adventures in this forest of their own making, enabling an experience that students and teachers alike find inspiring and utterly blissful. An interactive 'Play Space' work, Paper Planet places children at the heart of their art, supporting a future where they are powerful: artistically, socially and culturally.
Image: Martin Reddy
Paper Planet is an environment installation created by children from the simplest of materials. Imaginations go wild as students make creatures, vines, flowers, costumes and other seemingly impossible constructions, adding to the world of paper that surrounds them.

Explore issues around individual, cultural and collective identity in this exclusive workshop.
Sometimes it is easy to become distracted by the shiny and new, forgetting more traditional mediums. In its 2000+ year history, paper has been used for everything from writing poetry to building sculptures. No matter where you are in South Australia, we invite your students to get creative with this flexible medium - building or creating amazing artworks with paper.
This is an opportunity for a class to work with artist and poet Elyas Alavi. Elyas will visit the school for two weeks in Term 1, 2017 to work with students to create a visual artwork that will be exhibited at the Adelaide Festival Centre during DreamBIG Children’s Festival.
get involved
Elyas Alavi is an emerging artist and renowned poet based in Australia. He was born in Afghanistan, and moved to Iran as a child. Following the intensification of war in his homeland in late 2007 he moved to Australia as a refugee. Elyas will work with students using paper as the main medium as they reflect on and explore issues around their own individual, cultural and collective identity.
Send photos or a short video of your school’s paper artworks by 16 June 2017 to dreambig@adelaidefestivalcentre.com.au with the subject line ‘My Paper World – At Your School’. We will place participant submissions on our website and one lucky participating school will win $500 worth of art supplies thanks to DreamBIG Children’s Festival! Teacher professional learning workshops to support this statewide project will be advertised later through the DECD Arts Ambassadors e-news.
how to apply for this offer This offer is available to year 3 - 7 students in IoD Cat 1 - 4 schools and would suit a school with a diverse range of cultures. To register your interest please send a ½ page proposal describing why your class would benefit and relish this experience to dreambig@adelaidefestivalcentre. com.au with the subject line ‘ My Paper World’.

a taste of unity
AGES: 6 - 12
A programming workshop designed to inspire all! The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) is Australia's most awarded 3D animation, game design and visual FX educator. Created as a non-profit organisation to grow the creative digital sector, AIE pioneered the development of specialist game qualifications and continues to innovate through industry partnerships and dynamic teaching. Come and get a taste of Unity, the main program used by gamers around the world. This interactive workshop will introduce basic programming. By Academy of Interactive Entertainment
Use Makers Empire 3D design software to create the most amazing creature your students’ minds can imagine! One of these creative creatures will then be exchanged with another participating class. When your class receives a creature design from another class you will 3D print it (or Makers Empire can print it for you) and then produce a series of photographs to tell the story of ‘a day in the life of the creature in its new environment’. The photo story is then exchanged with the original class.
This is a special one-off for a group of students from an equity school.

CubbyTOWN Dancing and Gallery Deportment The ever-evolving CubbyTown returns!
Image: Cath Leo
A unique opportunity to step over the threshold at Ayers House and back in time.
A hit at 2015’s Come Out Children’s Festival, CubbyTOWN has been given a paper white makeover for 2017!
Walk in, turn right at the chandelier and find yourselves under the painted ceiling.
Students will visit CubbyTOWN in its new home at the State Library where they will have the opportunity to work with a professional artist to create their own artwork to add to the gallery.
The year is 1876, and despite the unsealed roads and flies Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Peters are keen to maintain standards.
CubbyTOWN Gallery is a living, ever-changing gallery where everyone gets to make their mark.
Take your students back in time by visiting the home of a 19th century upper middle class family. This visit will be made all the more true to the era, as they take part in a Dancing and Deportment class they will never forget.

Hello Pakistan
An interdisciplinary exhibition that addresses the impact of human activity on Australia’s natural and marine environments
Image: Georgia Wallace (Still from The Earth and the Elements)
Exchange the joy of reading, self-expression and critical thinking with students in Pakistan. We have developed a wonderful partnership with the Children’s Literature Festival in Pakistan whose goal we greatly admire as it aims “to expand the culture of reading for creativity, imagination and multi-sensory stimulation beyond textbooks and tests… it provides a unique platform that drives the interest of children towards the joy of reading, self-expression and critical thinking.”
Troubled Waters provides a unique platform for dialogue between artists and scientists. The key installation, River Journey, is inspired by world-renowned research into the changing ecology of the Murray River. Led by high-profile environmental scientist Richard Kingsford, a team of scientists has worked with artists Janet Laurence (environmental installation artist) and Andrew Belletty (founding member of Yothu Yindi and Bollywood sound designer) to bring a precious river ecosystem to life within the gallery. Presented by Samstag Museum of Art, University of South Australia.
