THE FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say, or do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to ALL concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to ALL concerned?

OBJECT OF ROTARY

…is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, and, in particular to encourage and foster; FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect Use my professional skills through Rotary to: mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians Help maintain a harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment

MESSAGE

July 2022

Jennifer Jones

Rotary International President 2022-23 Every month since I joined Rotary, I’ve looked forward to

reading this magazine, especially the opening essay from our Rotary president. I’ll admit that as much as I appreciate a

digital copy, I still revel in the tactile sensation of sitting down and leafing through the glossy pages. They are a treasure trove of photos and memorable stories about our great organization — the one we all know and love. I have learned so much over the years about service projects and lives that each of you have transformed.

As a communications professional, I have longed for the day that our stories were a regular part of mainstream

media and that our flagship magazine might populate doctor’s offices, coffee shops, or anywhere else people sit, wait, and browse. It’s great that Rotary members are better informed about all we do, and wouldn’t it be that much better if more people knew our stories.

All this was top of mind as I thought about our plans for promoting Rotary worldwide in the upcoming year. Over the next 12 months, we are going to shine a light on projects that put Rotary service on display to the world, and

we are going to do it strategically. Nick and I will focus on some of the highest impact, sustainable, and scalable Rotary projects from our areas of focus in what we call the Imagine Impact Tour.

We are inviting top-tier journalists, thought leaders, and influencers to use their channels to help us raise

awareness by reaching people who want to serve but have not yet realized they can do it through Rotary. But there was another important issue to consider — our carbon footprint. I take seriously Rotary’s emerging

leadership position on environmental issues. The example set by our members during the pandemic is fundamental to how we carve out our future.

That means we will harness digital technology to tell these stories — we will be tweeting, posting, and “going live” to anyone who will listen. We must consider our environment, and part of that means not always traveling but continuing to connect in meaningful ways as we have for the past two years.

Of course, we are social people, and we still need to be together. We simply need to be more mindful of our

decisions and think about how we get together just a little bit differently. For example, if we travel to visit a project, we will plan successive visits in neighboring areas.

So, what are your stories and who can help tell them? I hope you might consider your own Imagine Impact efforts — your story might be something you can promote just as easily on social media or during a Zoom call. Think about ways to showcase notable projects in your clubs and districts.

We all feel the impact that Rotary service and values have on us. Now it’s our opportunity to share that feeling with others.

Profile of PDG Virgilio G. Farcon, Jr. Endowment and Major Gifts Adviser for Zone 10A for RY2022-25, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator Zone 10A for RY2019-22, Past Chairman of the Philippine Rotary Magazine Foundation, Inc. for RY 2015-16 and Past Chair and CEO of the Philippine College of Rotary Governors for RY 2014-15 are just some of the recent rotary positions of PDG Virgilio Farcon, Jr. or “Jun” as he is fondly called. He is a dedicated and committed and servant leader of our beloved organization. He proudly calls himself a “Rotary baby” because he spent more than three fourths of his life pursuing his journey in Rotary service starting as early as 1975 when he was still in high school as an Interactor. He crossed over the Rotaract movement where he served as Charter President of the Rotaract Club of Marikina North in 1976. He served as the District Rotaract Representative in 1982 at the age of 23 in what used to be District 380 whose territory covers from Aparri, Cagayan all the way to Quezon City. He accepted the call of service and became a Rotarian at the young age of 26. He became the President of his club, RC Marikina, during RY 1996-97 at the age of 36 and was adjudged as the Most Outstanding Rotary Club President of District 3800. It was also during the same year where he served as the PETS Chairman of his own batch of presidents and the District Chair for New Generation and Vice Chair for Urban Peace. He was selected as the official delegate of the Philippines in the Urban Peace Conference PDG Jun Farcon’s passion and love for Rotary did not stop there as he went on to serve in higher positions and important committees at the district level. He practically served all District Governors year in and year out until he was elected to the highest position and served as District Governor during RY 2010-2011. He was one of four district governors around the world who came from Rotaract and the first district governor in the Philippines who came from the ranks of Interact and Rotaract, thus earning him the title as the first New Generation Governor of the Philippines. His major accomplishments as District Governor include among others the organization of the first Eclub in the Philippines, the Rotary eclub of San Juan; record breaking TRF Contributions of his district amounting to $355,000.00, the highest in Zone 7A; a per capita of $149, the highest in Zone 7A, thus earning his district the recognition of TRF Foundation Cup champion for garnering the highest per capita in the Philippines and Indonesia. District 3800 was also recognized as the first 100% all clubs giving district in the Philippines by RRFC Roberto Viray and the first district which received 49 EREY Club Awards in a single year with 75% of the active Rotarians in the district giving to the foundation. On membership, his district emerged as the highest growth rate in the Philippines. During the 2011 New Orleans International Convention, Past RI President Ray Klinginsmith personally requested for the playing of the District 3800 Global Music Video during a jampacked plenary session on the third day of the convention whose main speaker at that time was Bill Gates of Microsoft. It was a day to remember as Rotarians from the Philippines stood very tall in the eyes of the Rotarian delegates coming from different countries who attended the convention when the District 3800 Global Music Video was played to the delight and warm applause of the more than 20,000 delegates who attended the plenary session. At present, PDG Jun Farcon is serving as Endowment and Major Gifts Adviser until June 20, 2025. He is currently a Major Donor Level 3. He served as RRFC from RY2019 to 2022 and ARRFC from RY 2016 to 2019. He was part of the Rotary Coordinator Team for four consecutive years (RY 2013-16). He was adjudged as the Most Outstanding DGR-PRM in RY 2012-13 where District 3800 was awarded seven out of the eight major PRM awards. He also served as Chairman of the Board and Treasurer of the Philippine Rotary Magazine Foundation, Inc., the publisher of the Philippine Rotary magazine. He served as the first Chair of the Philippine Rotary Open, a golf fellowship among the ten districts in the Philippines which was started in 2013. He was the charter president of the Philippine Rotary Friendship and Golfing Fellowship, Inc., a Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees and is now serving as Adviser of the nationwide association of golfing Rotarians from the ten districts of the Philippines. His love for the sport of golf paved the way for his continuous hosting of the annual Jun Farcon Birthday Golf Tournament now on its 26th year. The proceeds of the golf tournament are given to his favorite charities and service projects. Just recently, he was accorded by Rotary International the highest award that can be given to an individual rotarian, the Service Above Self Award and the Citation for Meritorious Service by the Rotary Foundation. PDG Jun Farcon is happily married to the President of International Inner Wheel International and Past National President of the Inner Wheel Clubs of the Philippines, Zenaida “Zeny” Farcon. She will serve as International President for IW Year 2022-23. She also served as Chair of the Spouses Participation of D3800 for five times, under PDGs Arsenio Tanco, Santos Chua, Jose Peralta, Efren De Guzman and her own husband, PDG Jun Farcon. They are blessed with three (3) children, Jayjay, the eldest who is a Certified Public Accountant and graduate of De La Salle College Antipolo. He worked as Senior Auditor at the Sycip Gorres Velayo and Company for four years and graduated with the Juris Doctor Degree at the FEU College of Law. He recently passed the Philippine Bar; Jojo, a Juris Doctor graduate of Ateneo School of Law is a practicing lawyer married to another lawyer, Macri from the UP College of Law. The youngest is Zarah, a Communication Arts graduate of Ateneo De Manila and who is presently into creative writing and a free-lance writer. Zarah is a Juris Doctor graduate of the Ateneo Law School and just passed the Philippine Bar. While it would seem that PDG Jun Farcon is very busy and preoccupied with the practice of his profession as a CPA-Lawyer, Rotary, Knights of Columbus, Couples for Christ and others, he makes it a point that his family comes first. He makes it a point to continue with the family tradition of sharing Rotary to the family as

5

what his late parents, PP Ver Farcon of RC Marikina and PP Ludy Farcon of RC San Juan did to him and his siblings. He also shared Rotary to his eldest son, Jayjay (36 years old), Jojo (34 years old) and youngest daughter, Zarah (31 years old) who are all Paul Harris Fellows and charter members of the Rotary e-Club of Marikina.

Club History

DECADES OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF

It started when Attorney Paul Harris desired for camaraderie among business associates brought together of four men in downtown Chicago. After practice of subsequent rotating meeting location, they decided to call it as Rotary Club of which eventually led to an international organization of service and fellowship. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self. As Rotary grew, members pooled their

resources and used their talents to serve their

communities. There are 34,282 member clubs worldwide, 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders called Rotarians have

joined these clubs to create positive, lasting

change in the communities around the globe. The Rotary Club of Koronadal then, was the

only Rotary Club in the municipality of Marbel (now City of Koronadal). The committee on Club Extension headed by Past President (PP) Tolosa came up to the idea of forming one additional club in the growing City of Koronadal. In mid-1979, they searched for young, dynamic and well-respected professionals who will compose the new club.

It was June 30, 1980 when the Rotary Club of Marbel (Koronadal) has been approved by Rotary International (RI). The late PP Gerardo Calaliman was the Charter President who led the club its birth pains,

surviving the odds and establishing a name worthy of respect and prestige that every Rotary Club brings. As years sped fast, new blood was brought in regardless of religion, gender, or political preference.

The club’s flagship projects includes medical, dental, and surgical mission; literacy and feeding; career

orientation to graduating high school students; anti-bullying and I love English campaign; Adopt-a-Day Care Centers; support the school for the deaf at Koronadal Pilot Elementary School; annual December

gift-giving and feeding; breast cancer awareness activities; environmental projects such as tree planting in the mountain areas of Lake Sebu and City of Koronadal, coastal clean-up in the shores of Sarangani

Bay and General Santos City as well as B’lok Creek together with different national line agencies. All One Rota ry, One District activities were also participated.

The club sponsored the Rotaract Club of Notre Dame of Marbel University (school-based) in 1988 and organized the Intera ct Club of

Koronadal National Comprehensive High

School (KNCHS) in 2014. The Rotaract Club of Korbel (school-based) and Interact Club of Korbel were also organized during the

inspiring Rotary year 2018-2019. During the pandemic era in 2021, the first communi-

ty-based – Rotaract Club of Marbel was born which composed of young professionals.

Club History

DECADES OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF

The club is a proud recipient of various TRF Matching Grants such as Adopt-a-Harelip Project with the Rotaract Club of Johor Bahru (Malaysia) of District 3310, Vitamin A supplementation, and cataract operation. The club has been also a recipient of World Community Service projects from RI District 2790 of Chiba, Japan on school building construction, feeding program, literacy, water supply and sanitation, cataract and harelip operation. In cooperation with international and national medical societies, the club hosted medical and dental missions for various indigent communities in South Cotabato. This project was awarded as the Most Outstanding by the District. The club itself is also a recipient of numerous “Most Outstanding Club awards” in recognition for its dedication and commitment to do fair share in making the community a better place to live. In 2005-2010, Koronadal City and Department of Education City Division awarded the club as one of the outstanding civic organization in Koronadal City during its Charter Day celebration. The club had garnered string of awards from Rotary International and District. The highly-esteemed name it had carved in the community is a clear sign that it had accomplished its goals. It is not a reason to complacent, however. Every Rotary Year president aims to equal, or even surpass, the outstanding achievement that their predecessors had consummated for the club. To widen our network, expand our collaborative work for the good of humanity, we forged sisterhood agreements with

Rotary Clubs of Japan, Singapore, Johor Bahru, Davao, and Alabang LAMPARA.

The club is not only well-known for the delivery of service projects but also its contributions to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). It produced the first Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary Year 1994-1995. From then onwards, annual contribution to TRF becomes usual thus, became a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) Club in 2018 and still consistently generous until today. Also, some club members doing great service as district and club officers. Apart from its zeal to extend help to the needy, members became popular in District 3860 with their unique innovations in folk and modern dances. The strength of the club lies in each member’s commitment to the motto ‘Service above Self’ and to a feeling of unity within the Rotary Club of Marbel family. Whether it is in the good times to work together on club projects or during the sad times having personal tragedies. Membership retention is vitally important to retain a solid core and membership development is important for the long-term future of the club. The club is proud to have among its members outstanding leaders in the community not only in their respective professions or businesses but also in their passionate involvement in the Rotary service. These may not be much crow about, but in humble way, the Rotary Club of Marbel during its 42 years of journey had shared time and resources with the least of the brethren in places and instances most appreciated. Through the years, it delivered myriads of projects benefitting the less fortunate members of the community. Our commitment of service never ends. The Rotary Club of Marbel will continue to serve the humanity to be an inspiration and help to change lives. Imagine Rotary!

The Outgoing Club President July 1, 2021, when my life changing journey began as the life changing president of the Rotary Club of Marbel (Koronadal). Still in the midst of pandemic, I need to embrace change and innovate things in order to continue our Service Above Self. It was not an easy journey, as we the life changing offi cers did not have the opportunity to have our President and Secretary-Elect Training Seminar (PETS-SETS and District Training Assembly (DISTAS) face-to-face. All trainings were done virtually, but salute to our District officers, headed by Life changing DG Anna Louisa A. Bumagat, that despite the challenges we have to hurdle, they gave us the best virtual training possible to prepare us to lead our respective clubs. Most if not all the club’s induction were done either virtually or hybrid. We really missed the fun of the induction night during the life changing year. Yet, everyone is still committed to serve and change lives and positively adapt the virtual meeting to keep our club vibrant. Everybody learned the new way of meeting-thru zoom. In fact, every meeting has a tutorial part, for others don’t know to mute, unmute or even set their cameras on. It was a fun learning experienced and we all gained the basic knowledge of the digital world. Indeed, there is an opportunity in every adversity. The budget allotted for our induction were donated to TRF and Polio as agreed by all members. Thus, as early as October of 2021, the club has already achieved the $100 Per Capita and Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) giving club. So much thankful for my RC Marbel Family for the generosity We have 365 days to serve and change lives, it’s a long journey and we know that we will have a bumpy road ahead due to Pandemic. But RC Marbel members were eager to be on the road, took the ride and just enjoy every opportunity along the way. In the end, the bumpy ride was all worth it for we had accomplished the following projects/activities; July 23, 2021 - “Pag-asa sa Gitna ng Pandemya” at Sitio

International Areas of Focus - Basic Education and Literacy; Disease Prevention and Treatment; Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene; Maternal and Child Health; Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention; Community Economic and Development; and Support to Environment.

With another Rotary Year 2022–2023, having a theme: “Imagine Rotary”, let us

continue to engage in Rotary, renew our commitment, inspire more people, and lighten up more lives. As the Rotary International President Jennifer Jones

wants us to imagine the possibilities in the change we can make to transform the world, together, let’s take every opportunity to transform our community into a better and brighter place to live in. We, South Cotabateños, known

as the dreamweavers, must help

in converting dreams into reality.
