ORO DRESSAGE BY THE LAKE TO MAKE A COMEBACK Young talent - Ben Weir NZ DRESSAGE SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENTS Keeping motivated during winter TOP 10 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
EDITORIAL
FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME TO ISSUE FIFTY TWO OF THE DRESSAGE NZ BULLETIN
T
he dreariness of winter just worsened as our muchawaited Dressage Awards Dinner and ESNZ Hall of Fame befell victims of Covid. At the first indication of potential trouble in Wellington, it seemed like it was just going to be more of the same – just another boring, inconvenient lockdown. But as the days went by, I realized the emotional impact – the flat feeling - the lack of enthusiasm. And then I had to remind myself how fortunate we are in New Zealand, on many levels, compared with many other countries. My mind meandered back to a fascinating journey to Myanmar (Burma) nearly two years ago. A country of huge rich and poor contrasts, but beautiful and abundant with history. Now savaged by both political violence and Covid 19.

So I needed to remind myself of our own good fortune and to keep taking the Vitamins we need to get us through these times when we can become more isolated from our friends, both human and horse, and our families. Vitamin A for Action, Vitamin B for Belief, Vitamin C for Confidence, Vitamin D for Discipline, Vitamin E for Enthusiasm and of course Vitamin H for Humour. On the humour front, my Netflix savvy friends are still chuckling over the theme I first decided for the Awards Dinner – l had thought we were emerging nicely from the Covid darkness and wanted the evening to be a bright occasion. No black to be worn. Purple is the new black seemed a bit old hat, blue is the new black sounded a bit bruised, so orange it was. Orange is the New Black. Netflix fans, of which clearly I am not one, will understand why the theme became Colour Our World… Until August, keep warm, keep motivated – see you on the other side of winter…

summer BY THE L AKE ‒ DEC 2021
LET'S DO IT ALL AGAIN AT BEAUTIFUL TAKAPOTO Dressage NZ is excited to announce there will be Summer Edition of Oro Dressage by the Lake at Takapoto Estate from 3-5 December 2021.
W
ith commitments to the Land Rover Horse of the Year Show in mid -March and the vote from riders to hold the Bates National Championships following that event, Dressage NZ concluded that a major event earlier in the season to mirror the success of the Bates November Nationals in 2020 was a logical choice. The key team of Debra Cowen, Lisa Marcroft and Kara Lockhart are at the helm again – this time with full three day schedule planned from Friday through Sunday. The three day schedule will facilitate the use of three competition arenas setting aside additional warm up space as desired by riders in the May post event survey. Owing to the restriction in arena numbers, the event is planned to be open to combinations at Novice level and above, including ponies. Should entries need to be restricted, details of balloting or priority entry will be noted in the schedule. The event will also incorporate Zilco Freestyle to Music qualifiers for all grades. Two Australian international judges have been secured – FEI 5* Maria Schwennesen and FEI 4* Ricky McMillan, as long as Covid

allows international travel. These two experienced judges will add a definite international flavour to the show and their presence also makes it possible for the event to be classified as a World Championships 2022 qualifier even though it will not have CDI status. This is really exciting for our Grand Prix competitors who will have three classes on offer. South Island riders will also benefit as both judges will then move south to officiate at Canterbury Championships the following weekend and Ricky McMillan has been appointed foreign judge for the Livamol FEI Dressage World Challenge. Running a show of this calibre requires considerable support and
resources and the team looks forward to the support of a large number of sponsors to make the show yet another outstanding success. Anyone wanting more information on the how they can support the event through advertising and/or sponsorship can contact the Debra Cowen - Event Manager, Lisa Marcroft Sponsorship or Wendy Hamerton - Dressage NZ Sport Manager or private message the Oro Dressage by the Lake Facebook page with your query. We are sure you all agree that the scheduling of another event at the magnificent Takapoto Estate is a positive move for promoting Dressage as both a spectator and performance sport in New Zealand.

RIDER PROFILE
Ben Weir and NPE Del Rico.
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS WITH BEN WEIR Photos by Libby Law Photography Article by Alyssa Harrison
18-year-old, multi-disciplined Ben Weir is making his mark on Equestrian Sports in New Zealand. A full-time rider, trainer, and coach, based from his home in North Auckland and Vaughn Jefferis yard in Cambridge. With placings in multiple Young Rider Show-jumping classes throughout the season, as well as Reserve Champion FEI Young Rider at the U25 Dressage Championships, there is no questioning that he is here to stay. Alyssa caught up with Ben to chat about his plans for next season and for his future. 6 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | JULY 2021
RIDER PROFILE WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? I have had so many achievements, and prizes won across both disciplines, but one of the things
Ben Weir and Cinzana.
I am most proud of is producing well educated and happy horses that enjoy their work. It is something I am really passionate about, as I think this is where the success starts for the horse and rider, they have to have a good relationship to be able to work together.
WHO WILL BE YOUR TEAM FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON?
WHAT ARE YOUR SHORTAND LONG-TERM GOALS?
For the upcoming season I will have three horses on the show jumping circuit and just the one, Rico, for dressage.
Short term, I would love to keep learning as much as I can, so that I can improve my riding and work towards bigger and better things with all of my horses. I have many goals I would love to achieve across both disciplines, so for the meantime my main focus is working towards these.
My main showjumper will be Lanice van de Heffinck (by Plot Blue x Hades van de Heffinck), a bay mare from Belgium, owned by Vaughn Jefferis. She is only a small horse, 156cm, but has a heart of gold. I will also have Cinzana (Cassiano x Snow Fire), a grey mare owned by Jeff Graham and Dominique Visini, and Don Perignon II (Don Quattro x JK Good Looking), a grey gelding owned by Dominique and myself. For dressage, I’ll have NPE Del Rico (Doringcourt x Pandora), a bay gelding owned by Melissa Steed.
Long term my main goal is to be based overseas, where I hope to compete at the top of the sport. For me, giving back to the sport is super important as well, I have received a lot as a Young Rider and I find it incredibly inspiring, so I would love to pay this forward and help other riders achieve their dreams.
However, in the way of results I would have to say that being named as the FEI Young Rider Reserve Champion at the Equestrian Entries U25 Youth Dressage Festival this year was an incredibly proud moment as Rico and I have progressed together over the past few years from Elementary to Small Tour under the watchful eye of long-term coach and owner Melissa. Another proud moment was jumping a double clear to come second 2nd in the Young Rider Show-jumping class on Lanice after only riding her 3 times, as well as placing in the majority of other Young Rider and Grand Prix Super Series this season, plus jumping my young horse clear around her first ever 1.05m round. I started riding around the age of ten when my sister, Emma, received her first pony. I ended up taking over the ride all the time, so when I was twelve I got my own pony. Showjumping was always something that appealed to me, hence how I have gone down that path. My dressage career started seven years

ago when I had a lesson with Melissa (Steed), who offered me th ride on her pony, which eventually led on to riding Rico! I now coach and ride ten plus horses a day, which is hectic, but I enjoy it and I am so grateful for all of the opportunities that have come my way.
HOW DO YOU THINK DOING DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES BENEFITS YOU? I find that although they have to go in a slightly different way between the two, they both complement each other. Without dressage I would not have the tools on the flat to help educate the horses on using themselves correctly, as well as balance when doing the tighter turns. Show jumping also helps to give them something else to do, keeping them fresh mentally, as well as balanced.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNGER RIDERS? I think the most valuable thing I can say is to work hard, never stop learning, thank your horse, have fun, and believe in yourself.
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
Ben was just eleven when he first became captivated by dressage. I was coaching his sister and he came to watch – he ended up watching all day. The following week he bought his own horse and even though jumping was his primary interest he wanted to do some flat work. He was just a natural on horseback, supple and balanced. I had a young feisty pony and asked Ben him if he wanted to jump him. From there our seven partnership has prospered. He has become a member of our family.
Lots of people inspire me, my coaches, owners, peers, because they push me to be better and believe in my ability. But my role models are definitely Scott Brash and McLain Ward for Show jumping, and for Dressage Catherine Dufour and Carl Hester.
Ben transitioned to Rico after I broke my leg (an off-horse accident!) Rico isn’t the easiest ride and Ben rode him beautifully. He rides him better than I do. As time moved on it seemed natural for Ben to compete him and things just developed from there.
HOW DO YOU STAY CALM AND AT THE TOP OF YOUR GAME?
Ben has freakish adaptability and natural feel. Horses love Ben. He doesn’t over control them, and they all seem to want to work for him. I think it’s great for dressage to have this young show jumper who pops up now and again in the arena! And Ben is also showing the jumpers how well his schooled horses jump! They are starting to come for lessons as well.
companies, Stirling Collection, Equine America, and Equine Performance Therapy, which keep myself and my horses happy and at the top of our game. Aswell as this, I am so thankful to have a bunch of awesome owners on my team, who believe in me as a rider, as well as my family for being so supportive.
I always make sure I have a plan prepared, as well as surrounding myself with the right people. There is no point in having negative people in your circle, they do not help you. And as basic as it sounds, to stay calm just breathe! It is so important.
WHO IS YOUR SUPPORT CREW?
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE ON THE YOUNG RIDERS TV SHOW?
I am very lucky to have access to such amazing coaches, Melissa Steed, Wendi Williamson, Vanessa Way and Vaughn Jefferis, all of whom are incredibly supportive. I am also supported by some top-notch
It was super fun. If I was given the chance, I would do it again! To me, it was awesome to be able to see what goes on behind the scenes, as well as all of the ups and downs that come with the sport.
8 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | JULY 2021
Ben is one of the most resilient, hardworking and kindest riders I have come across; it’s an absolute pleasure to work with him and Rico. His attitude draws people to him. He has a wonderful sense of humour to add – he’s just fun to hang out with.

PREMIUM ARENA MIX The recycling process takes used tyres which would otherwise be disposed of in landfill, stockpiled, illegally dumped or shipped offshore to be burnt. At our plant in Cambridge our triple treated refinery process uses a series of shredders and magnets to produce a consistent evenly sized material that is 99.9% metal free. Why use Treadlite arena mix: • Less wear and tear on horses hooves • Reduced concussion on joints through better impact absorption • Lively surface allows horses to get more air above the ground and better take off for jumping • Maintains a more even spread than traditional sand surface • Less affected by rain • Reduced dust means less respiratory issues • Can be used alone over base-coarse or spread on top and mixed with existing sand

W
e arrived on Thursday midday to find Brisbane in the middle of a cold winter snap, which for us, was actually quite a pleasant temperature. Once we were at settled at our motel not far from the State Equestrian Centre (QSEC), our host Karen gave us a quick demo on how to use the iPad for judging. Seemed straight forward enough, though did cause a minor panic attack when I also remembered I had offered to do some writing when I wasn’t judging !
Nicole Magoffin and Salient Park Telynor.
Friday was a relatively quiet day at the grounds as there were only two preliminary classes running and the Young Dressage Horses in the third outdoor arena. https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/sport/other/meet-17-year-old-equestrian-no-kidneys-but-lot-determination
The first horse trotted into the arena, and the eight pen was already getting a workout. I remember asking my writer at some point, do they not have average horses over here? Almost every horse that came in was a super quality and so stylish, although a lot were quite hot that day. The other thing that struck me was the turnout, everyone looked immaculate, and despite the cold winter, all the horses looked sleek and shiny, and could have easily trotted off into the show ring and not looked out of place. Judging on the iPad was an interesting experience. It does away with the need for scorers and runners, and as soon as the last horse is finished the C judge can sign the class off, so most the riders were walking away from the arena already looking at their test paper and score. On Saturday Sue and I were both in the indoor arenas. Arena one was rather wet. Unfortunately a grounds person had over watered and it was now like sloppy soup, so it became a game of finding the driest route to the tables without getting stuck in the muck. As the warmup arena was in the middle of the two arenas, it was a bit like playing dodgems through the riders to get out to arena two. But the lovely Steward John lead us across to the arena like a father duck and his ducklings in a row behind him, must have looked an entertaining sight.
Again, there were some very classy horses in the higher grades, in a sea of blacks & bays, it was stretching our memories to recall which horse was which, they were all so leggy and elegant. Sue had a full day judging on the Saturday, but as I only was doing the Prix St Georges, I had offered to write and was put on the Medium 4C (NZ 5C). I think I was more nervous about writing using the iPad than judging. I was convinced I would push the wrong button and delete all the marks, which I was assured wasn’t possible, and I tried not to take that as a challenge. Before the class started, I had been watching this stunning black gelding warming up, and he was so elastic and light and balanced and I was instantly in love with him, hoping he would be coming into our arena, four hours later at the end of the class he came in to do his test, and I can tell you it is not easy to ogle and concentrate on writing. Sunday, I started the day writing for the Grand Prix, being very grateful of my four hours of practice the day before. Sue was judged Intermediate B, sitting at C. The arena was still quite wet in places, so the team of stewards were out between horses fluffing the arena with rakes in the patches it was packing down.
Sue and I both loved our time at the show, and everyone we encountered was so friendly and welcoming and made us feel totally at home. We then spent a couple of days sightseeing and getting lost, before travelling home again without getting caught up in any covid lockdowns. He is now ready to compete elementary and has been training the medium work at home. He was bred by Nicole along with Paula and John Mills. Her other ride was a pony... Salient Park Telynor was recently purchased by Jessica Weiss, Nicole been given the ride for the season. “He is a power package of pony stardom! Dressage Central Districts celebrated the end of the 2021 season with a very will supported two day show at Manfeild at the end of May followed by their Awards Dinner at the Orlando Country Club in June. The two day event at Manfeild attracted strong numbers in the unregistered classes which was very encouraging for the group to see the growth of new participants.

support teams. I need also at this moment to mention and give thanks to a partnership we as a club along with the general equine fraternity in our area have developed. That is Manfeild Park or more explicitly its management team. The Manfeild CEO has reached out to us and other equine users of the facility with the question, what do you want from us? Jos Gresham and myself have been involved in the planning from the start along with other equine user groups and while there has been a need for some compromise due to the park being a multi-use facility owned by the community I believe we are making considerable progress. Progress we will build on”.

NATIONAL NEWS Sophie Vercoe and Dreamtime Jazz.
VALE NEIL FOX Dressage NZ acknowledges with sympathy the passing of Neil Fox. Neil was not only a pioneer in the sport horse breeding industry in New Zealand but also much respected for his wider contribution to equestrian sport. His interest in equestrian sport came about when his daughter Marlene and son Lyndon started riding ponies. This then led Neil and his wife Rita to establish Te Peka Stud in Wyndham Southland. They first stood the pony stallions Iliad, Te Peka Sun Dancer and Te Peka Count Aladdin. In 1983 Neil, Rita and Marlene travelled to Germany and purchased the Hanoverian stallion Genius (Garibaldi/ Discus/Cypern.) Neil and Rita returned home and Marlene stayed on in Germany for a further six months. Genius arrived in New Zealand in 1984 after completing his stallion licensing testing. Neil then became a familiar sight at tournaments assisting Marlene with Genius. He was the founding Chairperson of the Wyndham Indoor Equestrian Centre and for several years was in charge of operating the sound system for the musical freestyles at Southland tournaments. Many a rider received his words of encouragement as the rode around the arena pre-test. His favourite soundtracks were undoubtedly Abba. When Neil was around people at events, it was always with an infectious grin and usually bit of cheek accompanied by a joke. Many people in our sport will remember Neil with a fondness for his huge contribution coupled with his sense of humour. Our thoughts are with Marlene and her family at this sad time.

FUTURE STAR SOPHIE VERCOE Article by Suzanne Inglis
In the summer of 2021 Nelson Dressage took the initiative to develop a scholarship for a young rider to assist them on their journey to graded dressage competitions.

certainly isn’t afraid to give her pony a good old fashioned pony club kick when required. Sadly, Sophie lost her darling pony Marty several months ago, but is now forming a lovely partnership with her new pony Dreamtime Jazz.
Nelson appointed a three-person selection team, who reviewed the scholarship applications and also observed applicant riders at the final competition before the announcement was made. Each selector chose their top two riders.
The morning after winning the scholarship, Sophie marched into her parent’s room at 7am to announce she was off outside to go practice her dressage.
The youngest rider to apply, nine year old Sophie Vercoe was selected as the scholarship winner. She was in each selectors top two, making the final decision an easy one. Sophie has been coming to dressage for four years, starting off in the lead rein classes at the winter series, and has progressed to preliminary this year, having won either Champion or Reserve at each level along the way. We couldn’t actually remember back to a time when Sophie hadn’t been at dressage. Sophie is a talented and determined young rider, who
It was important to the group that the scholarship wasn’t just about winning but about the rider’s improvement and progression, and that was one thing that stood out in Sophie’s answers in her application. The common theme was improving her riding skills, having fun with her pony and progressing up the grades. Nelson Dressage looks forward to following Sophie’s progress over the next year, and to wherever her dreams and goals take her. We are hoping that next year we can secure additional funding to have two scholarships on offer and send some more riders off onto their dressage journey.

NICKI TAKES THE ST GEORGES TROPHY
T
The magnificent St Georges Trophy was presented by the Friends of Dressage in 2000 as an encouragement to riders to make the step to the FEI levels.
he top three scores at Premier League shows are averaged for first time Prix St Georges level riders (including FEI Young Rider tests). The scores were very close this season with Napier’s Nicky Sunley coming out on top with her thirteen-year-old Hanoverian mare Limonit / Andiana / Anamour, bred by Ad Astra Hanoverians.
ABOUT NICKI SUNLEY In her life outside horses, Nicki is a super proud mother of two teenagers and a school sports coordinator in Napier.
ON FAMILY LIFE: I am the totally proud single mother of two wonderful, now teenage offspring. They grew up being dragged around the horses, parked in prams while mum rode, picked up and dropped off to school by the mum in gumboots, learning how to make a horse dinner before their own dinner, fitting in around mum’s work. And they are now the most amazing, talented, intelligent and creative young adults in their own right. They are incredibly supportive of everything I do with Laila, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.
like that, I love riding to find that perfect feeling of being totally with your horse, always trying to improve the balance and precision, just to make it a little bit better every time. And the beauty is that this is something anyone can always improve and chip away at, step by step, no matter what your level of experience is or the horsepower that you ride.
FUTURE GOALS? Dare I imagine Laila and I might one day have a go at Grand Prix? I would also love to bring on another young horse, hopefully now being able to apply a little more knowledge to the process.
THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE DEVELOPED IN DRESSAGE? Much more access and involvement for our younger riders right from grass roots level. We need to get them keen young, have them realise
that dressage will only improve them in whatever discipline they subsequently choose to follow, make it a fun and rewarding sport that is ‘cool’ to be involved in. I honestly wish I had started on this path 30 years ago, which would have opened up 30 years of better riding!!
FAVOURITE RIDER? I'm utterly in awe of our amazing line up of top NZ dressage riders, but if I had to name one, for her absolute dignity, class and inspiration Julie Brougham. It was a complete privilege to watch her final performance with Vom Feinsten at Takapoto Estate (Oro Dressage by the Lake) this year, not many dry eyes around...
FAVOURITE HORSE? Totilas. He really set the bar as the first to score over 90% in world competition... what a horse!!

In 2019 the AMDG committee decided to consolidate their Regional Championship as an open event, as it was becoming too much to organise separate categories and the prizegiving became endlessly long.
rom this decision evolved their first Amateur, Pony and U25 Youth Championships in January 2020, and were considered a huge success. Competitors loved the relaxed atmosphere and competing against their peers. The formula was again successfully repeated in May 2021. In the early 1990s, the Auckland Young Rider Dressage Group was formed by a group of enthusiastic Auckland and Waitemata parents who wanted to run competitions to encourage an interest in dressage for children. As well as running a spring series, they also held an annual AYRDG Championship show, ran seminars and organised instruction from National Coaches. Young riders, then up to 21yrs, ranged from preliminary to advanced and if you look at some of the old programmes, you will see a who’s who of now

Unfortunately, soon after the 2011 event, a large number of riders turned 21yrs which meant a loss of a large number of committee parents that were instrumental in keeping the group going and so it was wound up. And so later in 2011, the young rider group became part of AMDG. ENGAGEMENT CORNER With Christine Weal - Dressage NZ Performance and Development Board Member
A
s we come to the end of the equestrian year and look forward to attending the AGM and catching up with the other disciplines. It gives us a small opportunity to reflect on what the sport has achieved as we write our reports for our roles, from my point of view it is just a beginning and with an ever-changing sport much to be done. But with being supported by good people on the performance committee I am hoping we can put more programs together to support the riders. The performance and development role is one that has significant scope looking after many parts of dressage development from grass roots through to young riders and developing performance riders to established senior and professional riders targeting Olympic and WEG events. The needs of Performance and Development for Dressage have also changed with time. When I was first competing there were the “professional riders” that rode many horses, usually owned by 18 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | JULY 2021
other people, and did coaching mostly from their home base, shows would return small profits that kept owners happy and enabled you to ride a variety of horses. Today I see only a few riders that make their ‘living’ from the sport, the requirement to make a ‘living’ now means ‘professional riders’ must establish their own stable of high quality horses and spend large amounts of time away from their home base coaching and competing. The dynamics have changed and the team needed to support a ‘high performance’ rider is now more complex. One of the challenges the Performance and Development committee is grappling with is how to support our High Performance Riders alongside our National Squads and how to make sure the connection of these two join up but separate programmes can be achieved to really leverage the value and the opportunities for both groups in the best interests of our sports future.
We need our High Performance riders to grow their performances, to be able to attend international competition and to support and promote dressage throughout their exciting journey to international success. While this is happening we also need to make sure we are growing a pipeline of riders, horses and coaches that grow the foundation of our sport so we are growing both future stars as well as growing our sport, our participation and the quality of our home competition environments. This means investing not just in horses and riders but also our volunteers that make our sport happen and the infrastructure, particularly the surfaces, that our sport happens on. This year Jock Paget has taken over the role of High Performance Manager at ESNZ with the support of Warrick Allan. High Performance Sport NZ has now changed the criteria for how funding will be allocated to developing performance sports introducing an new fund specifically for the purpose of investing in sports that aren’t yet on the ‘podium’ but have the potential to be. This provides an opportunity for Dressage to submit for support from this fund. ESNZ is working with a small sub-committee from Dressage to develop a programme and submit a funding application in October 2021. The aim will be to develop a programme that creates a rider centric pathway from talent identification to pinnacle event and then joint fund this with High Performance Sport NZ. This may require Dressage NZ to secure a private investor or sponsor but if successful will create real opportunity to support our High Performance riders and build a programme to grow our momentum to have riders ready for WEG and Olympic Games competition. This month we profile three talented riders from the 20/21 squad year. From August we will introduce the 21/22 squad combinations in more detail.

HOW DO YOU PUT BACK INTO DRESSAGE? With a full-time job,
chestnut Hanoverian gelding by Bonifatius / Welkantje/ Weltmeyer bred by Matthews Hanoverians
raising children and riding, time is sparce. I give back wherever I can by sponsoring at dressage shows through our business and supporting young riders that work for me and those who ask for help to develop their riding. I am currently giving them young horses to ride and providing opportunities on my upper-level horses to feel what the top-level movements feel like and hopefully ignite a passion to achieve that themselves.
SQUAD HORSE 2 DON VITO MH 8yr old 165cm chestnut Hanoverian gelding by Don Frederico/ Adelheid/ Anamour bred by Matthews Hanoverians
HOW DID YOU GET INTO DRESSAGE? I took up dressage after having children as I felt eventing was too much of a risk and I just wasn’t cut out for riding fast across country!. I always excelled and enjoyed the dressage part of eventing so decided to take that further.
PERSON THAT INSPIRES YOU? I admire people in all walks of life who work hard to achieve their goals.
HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR DRESSAGE CAREER? I work full time as a contaminated land and environmental consultant.
YOUR FUTURE GOALS? I want to keep training horses to Grand Prix as long as I am physically able and would like to compete
WHAT IS ONE WORD THAT DESCRIBES YOU? Determined.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY FOUR PEOPLE FOR DINNER WHO WOULD THEY BE? My family, especially Dad and my Mum who passed away last year.
STRESSED OR RELAXED? I’m probably not the most relaxed person in the world…
FAVORITE SHOW - ANYWHERE IN WORLD? Windsor Horse Show (GBR) and Oro Dressage by the Lake would be right up there.
WHICH WAS YOU FIRST HORSE THAT YOU FOUND SUCCESS ON AND WHAT MADE THEM SPECIAL? Watergate who I competed at Small Tour level with success, and later my very special Dejavu MH, the first horse to be competitive at international Grand Prix.

HOW DO YOU PUT BACK INTO DRESSAGE? I would like to do more in the future but I help where I can by coaching Auckland young rider teams but also try to get involved with our local pony and adult ride clubs.
HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR DRESSAGE CAREER? I run a dressage stable and training yard (Waterview Park Equestrian) where I teach and take horses in for training,

CHAIR OF SELECTORS MARGS CARLINE SAID The selection panel of Karen Anderson, newly appointed Barbara Chalmers and myself have been presented a challenging mission naming the Squads for the coming season. The percentages to be achieved along with consistency, work ethic and potential, set strong parameters for being selected onto a squad. We welcome some new combinations, these riders showing their merit with competent and consistent performances. For others who have retained their positions, our congratulations and we look forward to assisting you to achieve your goals. The Performance Committee is working hard to provide the best possible value add to combination’s performances within a limited budget. There are some interesting
ideas for the achievement of this, especially with respect to overseas trainers and coaches. Looking into the future at the next World Dressage Championships in 2022, and even the Olympics which will follow, it is aspirational to aim at producing a team to qualify to represent New Zealand. Closer to home it would be exciting to have New Zealand horses and riders competing against our Australian neighbours.
Debbie Barke and RM Suzie Q.
Baldeep Dhillon and GF Jay Jelle Fan E’SAN.
With percentages continuing to improve it is hoped that some of these aims are achievable. New Zealand is breeding some wonderful dressage horses and combined with determined and dedicated riders the scores being posted are bringing our dreams ever closer. The selectors team wish you every success for the coming season and look forward with anticipation to watching the performances you are able to produce.

KEEPING MOTIVATED DURING WINTER Article by Alicia Cameron
Cold weather, rain and shorter days can make it hard to stay motivated during the winter months. But the challenges brought on by winter are not insurmountable. Here are some tips and suggestions from our riders on how they stay motivated, and riding fit during the colder winter months.
26 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | JULY 2021
NATIONAL NEWS
BE EFFICIENT • Use a rug with neck rug, to minimize the amount of dirt you’ll have to brush off before you take up. • Pre-make feeds up for the week ahead where appropriate to give yourself extra time in the evenings. • Where possible, be flexible with your work hours. Starting earlier to finish earlier is a great way to fit riding into the daylight hours. “Talk to your work about a flexible workday. I work from home 3 days a week, so on those days I ride over lunch time or in the afternoon and then work a little bit longer at the other end of the day” Emmy
MIX UP YOUR RIDING ROUTINE • Use winter to get out and about. Try a new arena, head out on a trail rider or head down to the beach. Winter is a great time to spice up your riding routine. • Lunging and long-reining can be a great alternative to riding if you are short on time during winter. “I use winter to change up my normal training. For example this week I have set up new pole work patterns in my arena” Kimberley
ALLOW FOR EXTRA TIME BEFORE AND AFTER YOUR RIDE • With the colder weather, cooling down can take much longer and chilled muscles can take longer to warm up. Ensure you take the time for a proper warm up and cool down to prevent any muscle injuries. • Don’t put a sweating horse out in the cold, wind or damp. After you ride, use a wick away or wool rug to wick the moisture away from your horse’s coat. When your horse is dry to the skin, you can put on his paddock rug and turn him out. “In winter it’s important to spend a bit more time warming up the muscles and cooling them down at the end of each session. I like to use a fleece over my horses’ quarters during warm up and cool down” Blackjack Stables Laine Cameron braves the weather to give Avani a canter day for his wife Alicia.

SET GOALS TO KEEP MOTIVATED Nicole Sweney and Flute Noir Photo: Debbie Stevens Photography
• At the beginning of winter assess your previous season to help you set SMART goals for the following season. Winter is a great time to start working towards these goals and set yourself up for success for the coming season. • Discuss your goals with your instructor or a friend. Saying your goals out loud can often help keep you accountable and motivated during the colder months. “I like to use a habit trackers app, so I can set mini goals that I would like to achieve each week” Nicole
USE WINTER TO PREPARE FOR NEXT SEASON • Plan in your lessons and winter shows. Not only will this help keep you motivated to ride during the week, but it will help you stick to your goals you set for your winter. • Wanting to move up a level next season? Winter is the ideal time to train towards the next level and introduce new movements. “Winter is the time you get into the nitty gritty stuff that you put off teaching/ practicing during the season, cos you don’t want to ruin your tests by teaching new movements. Eg introducing flying changes” Karla
KEEPING YOURSELF HAPPY Michelle Zielazlo and Sangria RE competing on a foggy morning. Photo: Dannie Armstrong Photography
• It can be really hard to stay motivated when it’s cold and raining, but even fitting in a quick 20-minute walk up the road can do wonders for your mental health. “Knowing the positive effect that my daily ride has on my mental health helps keep me motivated to turn up each day” Shelly
BE PREPARED FOR THE WEATHER • Heading out into the rain can be hard to get your head around but being prepared and investing in some quality wet weather gear will make all the difference. “My routine doesn’t change much between summer and winter, except winter involved a quality pair of fleece riding tights and my handy head lamp for working in the dark” Rhiannon 28 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | JULY 2021

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH KAREN SHIELDS Sponsored by Big Barrel
K
aren has been the Auckland Manukau area dressage group president for six years.
During that time she has brought many improvements to the group through her outstanding personal skills and ability to mediate difficult situations.
She coped with severe flooding rendering the Clevedon venue surfaces unusable, but thanks to her leadership, the main surface is now high quality, and the second surface is about to be upgraded. The renewal of the council venue lease is being finalized soon. This
has been a very time-consuming and complex task. Fortunately, Karen is a great liaison with the local A & P, Pony Club and Council. During the COVID period, three AMDG shows were cancelled and the very popular Pony, Young Rider & Amateur show moved to another date to avoid a clash of date with Oro Dressage by the Lake at Takapoto. Alongside her volunteer work, Karen is also a judge and steward Thank you Karen - AMDG can’t think of anyone more deserving to win a volunteer award for all you do - not only for our group but for dressage nationally and eventing. Karen is the recipient of this month’s Big Barrel volunteer prize. For mates rates, exclusive offers and all your party needs visit your nearest Big Barrel and join their Mates Club.
