hen SARAH* was rescued from traffickers, she was rejected by her family because of her perceived bad karma for getting trafficked in the first place. She had nowhere to live or work but Elegantees’ safe house and sewing center. In time, Sarah began to have hope for her future and did radical things such as send her family money even though they rejected her. This act from Sarah was so powerful that her family started to change. It is rare for a woman in Nepal to be able to take care of her family financially. Today, Sarah's family no longer believes in karma; they believe in grace and that a fresh beginning is possible. Sarah is living a new life, has a stronger relationship with her family than ever, and is a mentor to new faces in the sewing center. Sarah is one of the amazing 12 women who autographed the hang tag of each of the dresses. She is one of the artists behind the 2016 Dressember Dress Collection.

hen I created Dressember in 2009, it was just a personal style challenge-- never something I intended to do year after year, or invite others into. There were no plans to turn it into a fundraising campaign; in fact, the first time a friend posed the idea of doing so, I thought out loud, “That would never work-- we’re just wearing dresses!” Turns out I was wrong. Since 2013, the year I took the leap and turned Dressember into a campaign to end modern day slavery and promote the dignity of all women, thousands of women have raised over $1.5 million. Dressember has created a community of advocates that spans 6 continents and 38 countries! It’s amazing to see so many women and men who have been ready and waiting for an easy way to engage in the fight.
Ever since Dressember began exceeding my expectations (which was when we hit my initial fundraising goal of $25,000 on the third day of the first campaign month in 2013), it’s been incredible to see the opportunity for advocacy Dressember creates. I will leave you with an invitation to consider that every decision you make-- the things you wear, the things you buy, the things you say-is an opportunity to advocate for the dignity of others. There are a thousand tiny ways you can be an advocate every day. Dressember has shown me that because of the woman wearing it, even a dress can change the world. From the bottom of my freedom-loving heart,
