PROJECT SUMMARY This Wellness Center is located on the intersection of University Ave SE, and 14th Ave SE. It is designed for addressing the growing mental health illnesses for not only the students at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, but also for staff, and local occupants of the Twin Cities. To promote mental wellness in both an individual and community level, this building allows different levels of integration for each visitor to find where they feel comfortable to improve their mental wellbeing. This unique design on the University of Minnesota campus is for new participants to investigate and integrate themselves into the form and program of the building. In their discovery, they experience different expressions of wood and architectural form, that drive the occupants to enter into the open assembly space and leave behind the chaos of the world behind them. The fluid form of the assembly is surrounded by flexible support spaces to direct each unique individual into their own comfortable space for education, physical activity, cooking, or counseling. With the use of natural finish materials, it creates a biophilic environment that doesn’t derive from the traditional harsh stone architecture common to college universities. Radiant heating and cooled floors allow for comfortable ambient temperatures and soft cork flooring that drives calming tactile engagement for occupants using the space. While different natural lighting strategies are situated through each program, creating a unique environment to wind down mental stressors and create safe comfortable spaces for everyone.

SUSTAINABLE APPROACH Through different strategies of natural daylighting, spaces have the natural environment for diverting away from harshly lit interior lighting. Solar sun shades are used on the south operable glazing to bring ambient lighting into the classrooms. While large skylights are located in the tessellated roof of the assembly space to create a warm and inviting interior. With the form of the building being formed of the basis of utilizing heat convection of the space to carry warm air out of the occupied space through stack effect. Radiant cooling and heating floors can adequately adjust the ambient air within the occupied space to reduce the energy load of conditioning the building. Through iterations of assembly and energy consumption of equipment, the overall EUI of the Wellness Center was brought to 19 EUI, with an energy consumption of 49,379 KwH per year.
