The design principles of space, balance, proportion, and scale are the basis for all of my designs. I find that going back to the basics ensures that a design will be thoughtfully executed, with a solid foundation upon which to build. With these basic principles to guide my schemes and concepts, it is then crucial to ensure that the space created is functional and practical for the intended purpose and final use. My responsibility as a designer is to create an environment in which the client’s needs, taste and lifestyle are expressed through the materials, furniture, colors and fabrics chosen for a space. The contextual surroundings of an environment also play a critical role, whether it be appreciating an architectural style, using native materials to a region, or optimizing a view. While paying homage to a traditional past and blending that past with unexpected modern elements, I bring a freshness to any space. It’s those unexpected surprises that make a design memorable and attribute to the personality of the space.
Main Lodge Floor Plan

Serenity Resort and Refuge is a destination for couples interested in a romantic getaway. Being an automobile free resort, it is ideal for experiencing the pristine wilderness that surrounds the grounds. This project is unique in that our client was a professor in the Culinary Arts department at the Art Institute of TNNashville. He provided me with the initial concept, and we met bi-weekly so that he could have input in all stages of the design process. I learned a lot about restaurant design and space planning by designing the restaurant in the main lodge building. The entire floor plan is designed from the inside out, assuring that all spaces were designed with their function in mind. Being able to create the exterior shell of the buildings was a refreshing challenge.

This bedroom perspective is from my visual presentations class. In this class, I experimented with using different mediums for rendering. I specified all of the colors and furnishings in this perspective, and used maker and colored pencil to render them.

This wall section detail is from my interior detailing class. Along with learning construction methods, I also learned how to properly create a detail. I generated details such as floor transitions, cabinetry, tile installation, acoustical drop ceilings, and more. These were mostly done in AutoCAD, but this detail was done by hand to sharpen my technical drafting skills.

HON, or Hands On Nashville, is a non-profit organization that connects volunteers with diverse volunteering opportunities throughout the Nashville and greater Tennessee area. HON relocated their home office to a historic 1940s trolley barn, situated in a new mixed use development near downtown Nashville. This gave me the chance to design within a building in which the historical integrity must be respected and accentuated; bowed steel trusses, original metal frame windows, and decorative brick detailing were all details left in place. The use of natural light was optimized throughout the space in order to help with employee productivity and overall satisfaction. In this project, I explored the use of Google SketchUp for 3d modeling and rendering.

The Lancaster residence is a repurposed turn-of-the-century boat house that sits along the San Antonio River. The design for the refurbishment transforms the existing matured structure into the Lancaster’s dream home. The interior was comletely gutted, allowing me to design a totally new floor plan. It incorporates antique architectural elements with eclectic furnishings, while incorporating the Southwestern aesthetic that is characteristic of the region. The past meets the present in this uniquely distinct salvaged boat house. I took this project as an opportunity to refine my AutoCAD skills with detailed elevations and sections that showcase the distinctive Southwestern style.

Space Planning class was the first time I created a project from beginning to end, including a criteria matrix, bubble and block diagrams, and final floor plan. This small law firm of three partners is ADA accessible due to the fact that one of the partners was handicapped. I did not know CAD at this point, so the final floor plan is hand drafted.

Taylor residence
The Taylor Residence project is from my first Interior Detailing class. It is a kitchen, dining room and living room renovation of a 1950s ranch home. In this class, I learned about cabinet and countertop construction, wall partitions, and custom details. I have included this to show an example of my presentation boards.
Traveller’s Club, London Every week during my History of Interior Design class, each student presented a different style of architecture and interiors. One of the assignments for the class was to complete a ‘hands-on’ project that corresponded to one of our assigned styles. I chose to do the Italianate style. This building facade is of the Traveller’s Club in London by the architect Sir Charles Barry. It is a great example of Italianate, or Renaissance Revival architecture with its wide overhanging eaves with brackets and cornices, richly ornamented windows and doorways, flat roof, rectangular shape and symmetry. I enjoyed working with balsa wood to construct a 3d representation of the architectural detail for the Italianate style.

The re-design of the Operations Building at the Cracker Barrel headquarters in Lebanon, TN was unique because we had the opportunity to partner with Cracker Barrel employees and executives. I worked with a team of two other students on this design. In beginning this project, we researched corporate culture and branding to help us understand the identity of a corporation. Working with their current efforts, we proposed two phases of a re-design for them. The first was a ‘facelift’ with a budget of $1 million that primarily focused on cosmetic changes. For the second phase, a larger budget allowed us to renovate the entire existing building and seek LEED certification. The 25,000+ square foot building is divided between two floors and several departments. It was imperative that we focus on the criteria matrix and space planning at the beginning in order to design a creative and logical floor plan that satisfied the needs of the employees. During this project I realized just how important and crucial the programming phase can be, specifically for large scale jobs. Not to mention, organization and communication among a design team. This project helped me strengthen my Revit Architecture skills, and to develop my corporate office space planning abilities.

boardroom Because the boardroom is one of the most prominent spaces where important guests visit, I wanted it to set the mood for the rest of the building. The blending of natural woods and metals help to pay respect to the traditional roots of Cracker Barrel, while sleek and clean-lined furniture modernizes the space. The artwork chosen is meant to be a conversation piece and maybe even spark some laughter.

Along with designing the Boardroom, my other responsibilities for this project were the private offices and open workstations. For the private offices, I used Haworth LifeSPACE ERA moveable walls. By using these, the design could gain points for LEED certification. The open office areas are systems furniture from Haworth that have low partitions to contribute to an open feel. This helped to create a modified open floor plan, as requested by the client.

This project, from my 3D class, is a small scale model of the men’s restroom at the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville, TN. I chose the beautiful and vibrant space because it inspires me. This historical and famous bathroom, which has been voted one of the world’s best bathrooms, is art-deco style with gleaming green and black leaded glass tiles, green fixtures, terrazzo floor and a two-seat shoe shine station. In my model, the walls and floor are made of sheets of glass with acrylic paint on the back, and the urinals are carved from bars of Irish Spring soap. The working lights in the ceiling help to create reflections on the materials, as they do in the real bathroom.

Subway Tile Backsplash Inspiration Image Vanity Wall Elevation Traditional meets modern in this Green Hills master bathroom and dressing area renovation. Inspired by handsome gentlemen’s saloons and libraries with wood-planked walls, the materials chosen create a union between differing elements to craft an elegant and sophisticated space. The bathroom is an open plan design, with custom vanities and a concave glass wall shower. This project was very enjoyable because I was able to design it as if I were the client, so it expresses my own personal style. It was also an opportunity to learn about closet design and organization, as I had particular garments to create spaces forincluding 70 pairs of shoes for the Mrs. The existing windows could not be moved, so the plan is designed around them, allowing for natural light to wash throughout both the bathroom and dressing/closet area.
