International Artists. Spectacular Venues. A Singular Musical Experience. July 16 – 28, 2013 FestivalMozaic.com

My colleagues and I can’t wait to return to San Luis Obispo year after year to enjoy the warm hospitality of the Central Coast. This summer we invite you, our audience, to join us for 13 days of great music. We will be exploring a whole range of literature in a variety of settings — from the Baroque masters like Bach, through the Classical age of Mozart and a journey through the centuries up to the current day. I look forward to sharing these timeless and expressive works of art with you. Please join us.

Scott Yoo, Music Director Scott Yoo is generously sponsored by Lucia Cleveland and Paul Vanderheyden.

About the cover art: “Trio” by Drew Davis, was created specifically for Festival Mozaic in 2013. Drew Davis is an abstract painter in San Luis Obispo. Poster reproductions of this original work will be for sale during the Festival.

Chamber: Born from Struggle United Methodist Church — San Luis Obispo

monday

JULY 22 7:30 p.m.

Claude Debussy – Sonata for flute, viola and harp Ludwig Van Beethoven – String Quartet in F minor, op. 95 Béla Bartók – String Quartet No. 6, Sz. 114

Many great works of art are born from tragedy, strife and struggle. These three pieces, written in different parts of the world in different time periods, represent the struggles each composer faced. In 1915 France was in the midst of World War I, and Debussy struggled with the cancer that would take his life. In addition to Napoleon’s invasion of Vienna and his deteriorating relationships with family, Beethoven also had to contend with deafness while writing Op. 95, one of his most celebrated quartets. And the String Quartet No. 6 was the last piece of music Bartók wrote in his native Hungary, having to flee the Nazis in World War II. $29–$54 Generously sponsored by Ron and Ann Alers.
