jazz Live + Work + Learn Fall 2013 Arch 403 Kawneer Frozen Music Competition Finalist In Collaboration with Greg Steinberg The San Francisco Jazz Conservatory is the collaboration between the SF Jazz music center and the Jazz Heritage Center of San Francisco, to create a mixed use program of residency for 5 developing jazz musicians, an education facility for classes taught to local high school students and masters students, as well as a fully functioning performance hall. Our goal is to create a building that becomes a manifestation of jazz. By separating the major programmatic element of the performance hall, from the rest of the program, we call attention to it and express it as the major focal point of the building, or the “soloist, while visually tying it to the musicians residencies.

pool house residential renovation Summer 2014 Private Client Des Moines, IA Crose & Lemke Construction This renovation began with a small 25’ x 45’ building, used by the previous owner as a dog kennel and storage building. The building was very traditional in its aesthetic, and delapidated. The owner of the property is planning on an entire re-design of the outdoor space including a pool and landscaping. My job was to convert the small building into a modern style useable pool house for the owners family and their guests. by deleting the attic area I was able to create a vaulted ceiling dramatically opening up the space. The program was then layed out in a linear fashion starting with the most private, that being the twin bathrooms, and lofted sleeping quarters. The program gradually becomes more public with the kitchen area, followed by the dining area, family room and finally culminating in a grand outdoor public space with a double sided fireplace.

community KC River Market Community Center Fall 2012 Arch 301 Inter-disciplinary Studio In Collaboration with Zach Zimay, Devon Clark, and Mason Howar The overall site goal was to connect the community center building to the site topography in a manor that was successful for both aspects of building and landscape. The idea of a hinge within the community and historical paths transfered over to the hinge between topography and building. The topography becomes a result of the hinge movement within and also pulls outward from the community center. The layout of trees and prairie plantings solidify the swing motion, strengthening the tie between building and landform. The 12,000 square foot community center is situated longitudinally North and South. The building pivots along an axis point respective the existing shape of Grand Avenue, the earliest route used by settlers. This new shape gestures towards the Riverfront Park to the north and the Museum Plaza to the south. Furthermore, the buildings roof planes become angled, thus strengthening the gesture towards Riverfront Park and Museum Plaza, while also creating a gesture to the adjacent neighborhood of Columbus Park.

hotel Miami Hotel Spring 2014 Arch 528 Hospitality Studio In collaboration with Adam Thilges The Miami Hotel project was a project heavily focusing on Interior Design and branding. I collaborated with an Interior Design student to create Veil Miami. The Goal was to create an environment completely separated from the rest of Miami. We raised the entire site to give the user the increased feeling of exclusivity. We then split the site into 3 parallel portions, Guest rooms, Outdoor deck, and Private bungalows. We used the Guest room and Private bungalow portions of the site to “Veil the outdoor deck area curious non-guests. However, we left the east and west ends of the site open to create a sense enticement and or envy from voyeurs not on the property while also allowing views and access to the beach. We had striven to carry this theme throughout the hotel in various scale. This veiling strategy can be seen all the way down to our guest room layouts.

library Ta k e O n e L e a v e O n e Summer 2014 Private Client Des Moines, IA The Little Lending Library is a “take a book, return a book gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. You can, too! The Inspiration behind its design came from rural Iowan barns and sheds. Most of its components were recycled or reused, specifically the barn wood structure along with the hinges and fixtures. A custom Metal roof was designed specifically to keep water from entering the interior, and was designed to resemble corrugated steel siding.

photo Ballard Highschool Fall 2013 Architecture Photography Huxley, IA The process of carefully documenting architecture through photography has allowed me to gain great insight into Architectural design, including everything from tectonics to lighting, to user interaction. Throughout the process I have gained skills in DSLR technology, techniques for capturing meaningful shots, and extensive knowledge in post processing. I have gained immense appreciation for Architecture documentation and photography, while also acquiring a lifelong skill I will be able to take with me into future projects.

sketch Study Abroad Rome Italy Spring 2013 Study Abroad Rome Italy Personal Sketchbook The process of documenting and clearly conveying architecture through physical sketching, in my belief, is one of the most important skills a designer must have. Not only does it allow me to clearly express my thoughts and ideas on design but it gives me time to reflect and understand what it is i am truly seeing or wanting to see. During my Semester living in Rome Italy I made it a point to, whenever I could, capture some of the most inspiring places i visited. I have curated a collection of sketches from my time there where each space allowed me to sit, study, and meditate on not only the design, but the history of the architecture and the sense of place each has made in their own respective urban fabric.
