(3")".4508/ 2014 is a special year to be at the National Arts Festival: Grahamstown is celebrating its 40th anniversary and promises to pull out all the stops! NAF has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1974, when it was one of the only places in South Africa not abiding by its’ apartheid policies and one of the only places artists could truly express themselves without fear of government censorship. Now, over 400 shows come to perform in what has become the third largest fringe festivals in the world, with over 1,800 performances held over “11 Days of Amaz!ng,” attracting over 200,000 theatremakers and festivalgoers from around the world! During the Festival, the town literally doubles in size as performances take place everywhere, from traditional theatres to converted venues in church halls, gyms, libraries and more! The small college town of Grahamstown is located in the heart of settler’s country. A frontier town 130 km northeast of the coastal port city of Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown was founded by John Graham as a British outpost in 1812. The Monument (and the subsequent Monument Theatre where your show will have a chance to market in its Sundowner Series) was built in his honor.

While you’ll discover that Simba, Pumbaa and Timon do live in South Africa, they do so in game reserves and don’t sing Swahili, but Xhosa or Zulu! We’ll charter a private van from the Grahamstown to your first encounter of wild animals at Addo Elephant National Park. Here, wild African elephants roam free over hundreds of acres of open bush. Keep your eyes peeled: you may be lucky enough to spot a lion! We’ll spend the morning in the park finding elephants and have lunch in the enclosed picnic area ... but that’s just the start of our safari into the African wild! We’ll continue down the Garden Route to beautiful Mossel Bay and the home of Nyaru Game Lodge! This three star reserve will be the perfect “breather” for your trip. In between our dining and enjoying the recovery time, we’ll go on open Jeep-back safaris. You’ll also have the option for a quad and walking safari as well! Here, scouts will help you find Giraffe, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Waterbuck, Nyala, Kudu, Bontebok, Red and Black Impala, Duiker, Steenbuck, Bushbuck, Vaalribbok, Ostrich and even wild White Rhino and Leopard. Remember that everything we see is wild and we’ll be sure to make sure you get back in one piece!

4*45&3 4$)00The heart and vision behind the International High School Theatre Exchange is using theatre to facilite dialogue, learn and grow through cross-cultural immersion. Every school that joins for the IHSTE will have a special sister school theatre program assigned to them from Cape Town. Your director will be given contact information and the conversation can start as early as September 2013! Each school is assigned only once and is the beginning of a potential exchange from SA to your hometown! These theatre programs often face the same difficulties as the programs in the States and this is a great chance to inspire each other and to build a lifelong connection. We’ll have a special bonding night lined up to meet your fellow drama teacher and students and we’ll join together for one incredible day of giving back. These connections don’t end on your flight home. We’d love to see lifelong friendships formed and the beginnings of your new friendships from South Africa. *5 4 " '"$5

0653&"$) While most of Cape Town feels very “first world,” under it’s glossy exterior lies a very present “third world”: communities starved of resources, homes and hope. We believe in the importance of giving back and bringing hope to kids in communities that live a very hard reality. Khayelitsha is isiXhosa for “New Home,” and it’s the largest and fastest growing township in South Africa. It’s located in the Cape Flats on the outskirts of Cape Town, a sad creation of the Apartheid government, who moved all black families out of desirable areas and into state controlled areas. Because of Cape Town’s growing place in the world scene, many people have moved from all parts of Africa to townships to find a better life. Here many workers live a hard existence in the “shanty” homes, commuting into Cape Town for work. Partnering up with your sister school, we’ll spend the day playing theatre games with kids as well making and giving away around 150 lunches. Through theatre, you’ll inspire kids to see beyond their means and be part of giving these kids hope. Safety is a priority and Theatre Adventures will take all necessary precautions to make sure your team is comfortable at all times.

The first stop is Table Mountain and a trip up on the Aerial Cableway to the top of one of the largest flat-top mountains in the world some of the most beautiful panoramic vistas in Africa! We’ll continue our journey around Cape Town in the Red Busthrough glamorous Camps Bay into the heart of Cape Town CBD. The day ends with dinner in the historic V&A Waterfront and a sunset harbor cruise! Also included in your trip is a tour of the Southern Peninsula. Here we’ll stop at world-famous Boulders Beach, the home of a colony of African penguins, and a beach where you can stand in the sand next to them! From there, we’ll continue our journey south to where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic: the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point National Park. South Africans are some of the friendlist people you’ll ever meet. In a recent survey, it was found that South Africa ranked as one of the welcoming places in the world to foreigners, even surpassing the US and most of Europe. It’s also one of the only places in the world that constitutionally guarantees rights to all of her citizens - black, white, even gay or straight. So say “Hi! Chances are you’ll make a friend!

4065) "'3*$" South Africa’s history has all the makings of a blockbuster movie. First, a setting unrivaled anywhere else in the world: nowhere else can you find the breathtaking rugged landscapes, mountains, coasts, plants and incredible wildlife that make up South Africa. Add the flavor of not one but eleven national languages, each bringing their own rich histories and a cast of characters to cheer and hiss at, and it’s a hit!
The story begins first with two tribes living peacefully side-byside, raising animals and sowing the land. Europeans explorers first claiming South Africa in 1488. First a remote outpost for ships to resupply and to drop mail, it begins receiving a large stream of Dutch begin laying claim to the Cape. Cape Town becomes an outpost for slavery, bringing men and women from central Africa and sending them to the New World to face a horrific future. After 150 years, slavery finally ends in 1808. Ghandi arrived in 1893 to begin stirring up the resistance against discrimination, planting the first seeds of a free South Africa. The English lay claim to the land and the bloody Boer War began. In 1910, the Union of South Africa is formed in 1910, blacks denied the vote. In 1912, the ANC is formed for black rights and finally achieves freedom in 1913, but only within reserves. 1927 begins the Immorality Act, prohibiting any bi-racial relationships. Women received the right to vote in 1930, but a dark cloud was descending.

1948 introduced the National Party and their plan to reclaim South Africa by means of separation: Apartheid had begun. Families were uprooted, opponents jailed or killed. 1950 began the Resistance: the people began the song of freedom. The Freedom Charter was adopted by the Congress of the People in 1955 and 20,000 women march to the union buildings. In Sharpeville 1960, things turn ugly against pass laws. Prime Minister Verwoerd, the archi tect of Apartheid, is assassinated in 1966, and in 1976, the youth make a stand against the cumpolsorary teaching of Afrikaans in black schools and win! 1986 saw the end of blacks carrying passbooks. By 1990 because of international outcry, Mandela is released from prison. In 1992, nearly 70% of whites vote in favor of ending white minority rule. Finally: FREEDOM! The world watched as South Africa, the Hope of Africa, raised it’s united flag for the first time - South Africa, a free people, united and celebrated. Today, South Africa has overcome its’ brutal and bloody past and has turned a new page, looking bravely into the future. Now, fashion weeks, the opera, symphonies, ballets, huge musicals, rugby, football (soccer), lacrosse and more continue to unite a people that a government once tried so hard to separate. The movie industry flourishes here and brands worldwide come to South Africa to find both the perfect face and location to represent their brands. South Africans have gone on to top both the iTunes charts and to Broadway marquees, truly victorious from its past. And 2014 marks one final event: The World Design Capital of 2014, designers worldwide look to Cape Town and celebrate! Today, more than any other time, South Africa is a people united by the braai and a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
