Consumer Skills
Page 6 of 12 February 26, 2010
Sixth Graders take AD-vantage of Consumer Skills What is “hype”? What is a “must-have”? Sixth-grade students in Ms. Torre’s English language arts can tell you!! After an intense, 3-day mini-unit that explored the world of advertising, the students were able to create their own advertisements that focused on a particular target audience: busy moms, energetic, tenyear-old boys, and energetic, ten-year-old girls. Products ranged from a protective full-body suit and jetpack (25% off and a free Snoopy helmet for the first hundred buyers), to a department store that features coconuts as a theme. Music was a hands-down favorite for the ad technique of “sense appeal”. Students learned how to become smart consumers and to always, ALWAYS…read the fine print!!

Western Wishes

Western Wishes- Leaving a Legacy of Goodwill, the Cowboy Way! Since 1994, Western Wishes has turned dreams into lasting memories for kids faced with adversity and who love the western way of life. The award-winning program rewards the fighting spirit of these courageous kids and highlights their accomplishments. “The common thread with most Western Wish kids is that they posses a fierce competitive spirit which allows them to focus on their goals, rather than their affliction, giving them a positive outlook. As such, they are able to become "Ambassadors of Hope" to others who are about to enter the long road to recovery, or who are preparing to face the end of an already too-short life.” – Donnalyn Quintanna, Western Wishes founder/president
Western Wishes granted a wish (presented by Cassie Boatwright) for two Lackland children and their families- the Richters and the Mulumbas. They were VIP guests at the San Antonio Stock Show/Rodeo on February 18th! The kids and their families met multi-time world champion cowboys and cowgirls. The cowboys continuously voiced their admiration for the triumphs these children have achieved at regaining their lives. Autographs were given on all of the kids’ hats. The families were also treated to a backstage pass to meet country singer Toby Keith. He even dedicated a song during the concert to the two children. It was a night they won’t soon forget! If you see the kids- ask them about their experience and to see their hats! They’ll be glad to share.

HANDS-ON ART Students in Mrs. Allen’s second grade class work on creating their own Food and Object Faces at the San Antonio Museum of Art. The second grade classes have each visited the museum on different days and had the opportunity to make something special after a brief tour. The students in this picture have just finished learning about a late Renaissance artist, Arcimboldo.

On February 26 , 1919, two national parks were established. The Grand Canyon National Park, in northwest Arizona, covers 1,218,375 acres. Acadia National Park, on Mount Desert Island, near Bar Harbor, Maine, covers 27,871 acres.
Students Investigate… How far apart are these two national parks? How long do you think it would take to travel between the two?
