Client Gasunie made considerable investments in the construction of the ‘Gas Hub’. An integrated gas infrastructure utilized for the production, transport, storage and transit of gas for the European market. One of the final large projects of this major operation is the construction of a new gas transport pipeline between Dutch towns Beverwijk and Wijngaarden. A.Hak Leidingbouw and A.Hak Drillcon were granted two of the three lots of this trajectory and thus became responsible for the construction of 60 kilometers of this 48" gas transport pipeline. A challenging project, partially due to soil conditions and water management requirements. In crossing the abundance of (rail)roads and waterways in a varying landscape, it was up to A.Hak Drillcon to select the ideal drilling methods for every location.

The right drilling method for every crossing
HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
For the long crossings, Horizontal Directional Drillings were carried out. These HDD’s were completed with the 330 tons mega rig and the 500 tons mega rig, the latter of which being christened during this project. Due to the pressure of the groundwater, the rigs were deployed on mounds for various drillings. Special return pipelines for drilling fluid were constructed both above and under the surface. For the underground pipelines, the drilling rods were used as mud return lines, allowing for optimum usage of this substance. In addition to roads and waterways, the ‘Polderbaan’ runway of Schiphol International Airport was also crossed. This crossing was especially unique because the runway remained fully operational during the entire process. A large press delegation and even a film crew witnessed the process of the 1.269 meters long pipeline carefully being put in place. MICROTUNNELING

Almost all Microtunneling operations on this route were completed with medium-carrying steel gas pipelines. Only when a railroad crossing was encountered, concrete case tubes were used. A.Hak Drillcon was challenged time and time again to find innovative solutions for managing the pressured groundwater levels. This was especially important while constructing dry and safe pits, for which underwater concrete and specially designed sleeves were applied.

DIRECT PIPE DRILLING
Adjacent to Highway A4 near Hoofddorp, close to Schiphol International Airport, the local N201 road and its neighboring business park were crossed using the Direct pipe method. This method was selected as the available space was limited and this drilling method allows for working with short pipeline sections. An extra benefit of this innovative technology is the possibility to retract pipelines back into the ground. On the receiving end of the drilling, the bend was welded to the pipeline above the groundwater level. Once this step was completed, the pipeline was retracted so that the welded bend was maneuvered at the correct depth, the very first time such a solution was deployed.
