UNIVERSIDAD VIĂ‘A DEL MAR, through its Center of Spanish, has a long trajectory in teaching Spanish and it will be very soon one of the first Associate Centers in Chile of the Instituto Cervantes from Spain. UVM presents the new intensive Spanish programs directed to Brazilian students and professionals interested in taking an intensive program of Spanish associated to the attributes of the Chilean territory during the different study periods (January or June 2011)
These programs have been designed for students and professionals interested in improving their Spanish proficiency as a second language and for those who cannot study abroad for one semester. At the same time students will be able to carry out artistic activities, to learn about the Wine industry, or simply to enjoy a good time on the Chilean coast (January) or to ski in the Chilean Ski resorts (June). The Center of Spanish accredited by the Instituto Cervantes in Spain offers a certified program in which students will be able to improve their language skills, and learn Spanish in a unique and artistic atmosphere that includes wine tasting, cultural activities, and conferences on winemaking for a period of three weeks.

The Chilean wine and Spanish program give the students an introduction to the art of grape cultivation, processing and storing of the most well-known Chilean wines. The practical part consists of wine tasting which will allow the students to get to know the wines from the main regions of Chile.

The Influence of the Pacific Currents on Chile´s Climate Chile´s climate is highly influenced by the cooling effect of the Pacific Ocean and the Humboldt Current that begins in the icy waters near Antartica and flows up the western coast of South America. Curiously, when the effect of the Humboldt´s cold current hits Chile´s northern coastline it produces clouds and fog, but little or no precipitation, which then contributes to making the Atacama Desert the driest on Earth.

Chile´s Unique Geography The cool sea air is partially blocked by the coastal mountains, although it finds its way inland by following the course of the transversal river valleys. During the day, sea breezes carried by the cold Humboldt Current penetrate inland, and each night, cold air descends from the snow- covered peaks of the Andes.

460 years of Wine Heritage Religious Roots Wine grapes (Vitis vinifera) are not native to the Americas; they arrived in the 1500s with the Spanish missionaries who needed wine to celebrate the Catholic mass. Fray [Brother] Francisco de Carabantes is credited with bringing the first vines into Chile through the port of Concepción in 1548. This was the País (pa-EES) grape that is similar to California’s Mission grape. Such was the variety’s success in adapting to Chilean soils that vineyards were quickly planted throughout the country from the Limarí Valley in the north to the Bío-Bío Valley in the south. Uncannily, although quality wine production historically tended toward the center of the country, modern technology has once again extended the frontiers of Chile’s fine wine appellations (Denomination of Origin or D.O.) precisely to its original northern and southern extremes. The 16th century residents of the burgeoning capital city of Santiago - mostly sons and daughters of the earliest Spanish immigrants - clamored for more wine to quench their thirst and whet their appetites as well as to satisfy their spiritual needs. The surrounding Maipo Valley proved to be a tremendous source of red wine, and Chile’s first wine boom began in earnest.
With time improvements in maritime transportation made cross-Atlantic travel possible for the upper classes. Chile, freshly emancipated from Spain in 1810, yearned for knowledge of its wider European roots, and members of the country’s wealthy families embarked upon intercontinental pilgrimages that would profoundly change Chilean life, culture, and wine forever. France was a favorite destination, and soon French customs, from food to clothing to architecture and fine wine consumption, flourished in Santiago. It did not take long for the first new French-style wineries to appear on the outskirts of the city. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM | JUNE 2011 | 09
DESCRIPTION OF THE SPANISH PROGRAM The main objective of the program is to develop the student’s communicative competence providing them an appropriate integration in the Latin American society. Students will be able to use the language in a professional and personal context. The teaching material and activities used by the teachers in class are mainly based on everyday activities and different reading sources (newspapers, magazines, internet, and scientific articles, etc.) Depending on the number of participants, the Center of Spanish will offer 2 levels of Spanish:
Intermediate Advanced The program will be divided into two courses:
Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary (14 contact hours) Spanish for Communication (22 contact hours)
At the end of the program students will be given a certificate for the Spanish program.

Valparaíso and Viña del Mar City Tour Accompanied by an expert, the tour includes the main attractions of Valparaíso. They can walk by traditional hills that have given Valparaiso its name and world’s recognition. This city was designated in 1993 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Students can take a boat ride along the Valparaiso bay.

Enjoy a visit to Neruda´s eccentric home (now a museum) on Chile´s beautiful central coast; enjoy a seafood lunch and a recitation of Neruda´s poems on the beach that inspired the poet.

Day 3 Gourmet Horseback Riding Accompanied by a bilingual expert through 120 acres of the Altos de Santa Luisa country state located in the area of Las Gaviotas at the bottom of the Hill Mauco, 5 kilometer from Con-Con in the Quintero town. During the tour, students will learn about the flora and fauna of this area and historical contexts. Afterwards, students will enjoy a rural barbecue and a folkloric show specially prepared for them. Students may stay with local families. These families have hosted foreign students before and are from middle – upper income households. Overall, they are carefully selected. UVM will provide the host family confirmation prior to starting date. Private room is provided as well as three(3) meals daily. Bed linens are provided, and laundry service is also included weekly by the host-mother. Host families tend to be the “traditional family”: Mother, Father, and children. Living with a Chilean family allows UVM International Students to further enhance their Spanish language skills as well as experience the Chilean culture.
