Camaro Update
ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY DUSTIN TROYAN
This car. Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Well, it starts, it moves, it needs a lot, but...it starts. I had some pretty good momentum but I got a bit busy, so things slowed down. If you have been following the “saga” of this 1968 Camaro, you are probably thinking, “when is this guy going to get this thing done?” Yeah, I am thinking the same thing. This is the first “old car” I bought. It was and is truly a basket case. I have gone forward so many times to only step backward. It is what it is. The good news is that I don’t have to push it. I have taillights that work and I have wired half the gauges. Well, I have run the wires, they still need a bit of connecting. I put the back window in as I could not find someone to do it, so...how hard could it be? Buy some tubes of “goo” spread it around and place it in. Messy but not rocket science. When I pulled the front window out from storage, it was

broken, so I now have to buy the front window for the third time I think. This car...if it could talk it would probably just start laughing. So, where is it currently at? The car starts using a flathead screwdriver since I have to re buy the ignition keys (actually all the keys and locks (again)), the brakes work, taillights work and I can move it without pushing it. I have resolved myself that it will stay in primer, unfortunately when it was sprayed after media blasting they did not use self-etching primer so there is a small amount of surface rust I saw today. I hate rust. I need to get the front window in, the gauges, all of the door latches, exhaust, tires and tune it. The Camaro will stay gutted, for now and later on I will end up minitubbing it. The never ending project I suppose. You have to have a sense of humor when you work on old cars and hopefully you have a lot of nice friends that can help. So many have
along the way, it has just be a bit of a long journey. I pulled the car out of the garage today to get some pictures and I just needed to hear it, steer it and I wouldn’t say I drove it, but, listen to that nice cam and watch the blower turn. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is this car. It has a lot of really good parts on it, should be over 700 horsepower with a conservative tune, there is a lot there and there is a lot it needs. I will get it done as I always see things through, it is in my nature I suppose, but this car, man I am so close to driving it, so close. At the end of July I will be forty-four. For my birthday I will drive the car to Malibu for lunch. There, goal set. It will have no paint, no interior, no niceties, it will be raw and fast. Just how I wanted her...(windows would be nice). Happy motoring and remember, never give up.
SWEET SUPRA PROFILE Automotive & Owner Profile: Matt B. ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN @guyintheorangehat
Matt, Tell us about when your passion for cars began... My interest for the automotive world began when I was 18 and lived in Austria. I founded a company “Overseas Performance Imports” that dealt mostly with the import of car-parts for Japanese cars. Back in the day we were one of the first authorized distributors for Apexi, Greddy, HKS, Injen, etc. The company is still running today and has involved in a one-stop solution from “simple” imports to fully fledged engine design. What cars have you owned? The only cars I’ve ever owned were Supras – up until today a total of four. What cars do you currently own? Since I don’t want to add unnecessary decision to my life, e.g. “What car to drive today?” I am sticking with one properly build car that can be used to get groceries or go 0-200 in 15 seconds: One very hard to find Toyota Supra MKIV Hardtop original 6 Speed (one of 326 ever built). What made you decide on the Supra? How long have you owned it? The MKIV platform has always been my favorite car due to design and potential. Something about the lines of the car and the cockpitdesign interior that gets me every time. I have not see any other car that could compete. The current Supra I own for 7 years now.
Did you buy the Supra stock? After you bought the car, what mods have you done? The car was purchased completely stock and build from ground up. As a matter of fact the car was stripped down to bare bones within 3 days of purchase and went directly to the paint-shop. The modslist is endless. I would say everything you can do, is done. The goal was to not go extreme with the looks of the car but add a touch of sportiness. Electronics were modernized, for example: Addition of an OEM-style RFID keyless entry system with startbutton and GPS enable alarm/ tracking system. Replacement of stock analog fuel/ water temp gauge with a digital cluster for coolant/oil-temp, oil/ fuel-pressure and EGT. Replacement of 1998 steering wheel with a modern F-Sport wheel that can control audio as well as boost-settings. Update of the OEM plastic dashpanels to real carbon fiber in matte finish. Fenders, Hood, Trunk, rearbumper were also replaced with carbon-fiber. For safety reasons we left the doors OEM. Is this your dream car? If not, what is and why? Yes, no doubt about it. The only other car I’d consider buying would be an Aston Martin DBS as an alternative. Tell us about the performance of the Supra, how fast is it... horsepower and torque specs? Since the transmission is fully
built but still has the OEM gear ratio the maximum speed would be 303MPH and it certainly has enough power to get there. The maximum speed I had her up to was about 180MPH due to quality of streets. Both HP and TQ are 4 digits. Since peak-HP and TQ are irrelevant, everything has been done to start the power-band as low as possible. From building a high-
compression, ultra-lightweight engine to utilization of a spoolvalve and hundreds of hours of tuning, rest assured, once the rpm hit 3500, your chances of keeping up are minimal. Do you drive it daily or just to shows and the track? Do you track drive it? Daily driver. No track use. If you build a car, drive it!
What have you sacrificed to build your vehicle? Did you build the car yourself or with friends and with shops? Obviously a lot of time and a good amount of money. I did everything myself aside from paint with occasional help from friends of course. Quick, but BIG thanks to Dave & Wakita San! Are you done with the car? If
not, what are your next steps? Yes, the car is in its final and ultimate stage. Obviously things come up, but I don’t have any plans of changing anything. If you could share any advice about building cars, what would it be? If you do something, do it right or don’t do it at all. If you think you save time or
money by doing it cheap, you’ll get to pay later to fix what you didn’t do right the first time so ultimately there are no savings. If you had one statement that defined you, what is that statement? I don’t think one statement can define me. Parting thought....what motivational advice do you have for our readers?
Build the car you want to build but do listen to advice from experienced people. If you try something new, don’t lose motivation when things don’t work out immediately.

Used on hot rods and most popular in the 1950’s, “Necker Knobs” were attached to the steering wheel and swiveled. This allowed the driver to put one hand on the wheel and the other around his girlfriend, providing the opportunity for the driver to kiss his girl on the neck while driving! It was also known as a ”Suicide Knob”, “Granny Knob”, and a plain “Steering Wheel Spinner.” Perhaps the most common name, however was a “Brodie Knob,” named after the “bridge jumper” Steve Brodie. Mr. Brodie is best described as a daredevil of the late 1800’s. Drivers would use the knob to spin the steering wheel rapidly and, while spinning the rear tires, whip a 180° turn, or a half donut, and take off the other way. This is where we got the term, “Lay a Brodie”! Auto part stores sold a variety of these knobs in the 50’s and 60’s. They had everything on them; product logos, colors, and women! “Brodie Knobs” are more common today on commercial equipment like fork lifts, riding lawnmowers, and tractors. They allow sharp turns with one hand while working accessories or a shifter with the other. The advent of power steering really caused the demise of the “Brodie Knob”. An original “Brodie Knob” can be a fun find at a local swap meet. Keep your eyes out!

1st Annual
OC Festival of Speed
ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY STEVE ELLIS @GetBTW
Nearly every Exotic car, Supercar, and Hyper car manufacture were represented at the first annual Orange County Festival of Speed held January 12th-13th, at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Koenigsegg, Pagani, Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, Gunther Werks, Lamborghini, and Bugatti could all be found in the paddocks, AND on the track! That’s right, these cars, worth millions of dollars, were properly driven in the environment for which they were intended to dominate. The minds behind the OC Festival of Speed (OCFoS) wanted to get the cars drooled over in the parking lot out on the track, so they could be seen and heard at speed. I truly do not know where to start, as nearly all my dream cars were right there in front of me. How could this have been any better, simple, there event just needed a Ferrari F40, and a McLaren F1…if I were to be picky. Seeing the Koenigsegg Agera RS at full throttle, on the banked straight is what I’d imagine seeing a Unicorn playing lead guitar at a Rolling Stones concert. Then there is one of five Pagani Zonda Cinque roadsters, parked next to a Pagani Zonda Tricolore, which mind you these cars aren’t roped off, or behind displays where you can’t really see the cars, no, you were able to get up close and personal with each car, which made this ever more of a rare treat. This is the first event and I hope that the next one, and the one after only get better and better, allowing people to truly enjoy these works of art, and feats of engineering up close. Step onto luxury Luxury interior designers can often spice up a room by using unique, high-quality flooring. Expensive, yes, but as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Natural stone flooring comes in at number one as the most expensive flooring option. Quarrying for stone is time consuming! It’s also one of the most beautiful and lavish choices and nothing conveys
opulence more than a magnificent marble entryway. Mosaic tiles, designer Italian tiles, pebble mosaics, antique reclaimed glass tiles, handmade tiles, and ceramic floor tiles can be bright and fun additions to a room. Exotic hardwood, among the most original of options, is quite distinctive and hand scraped wood planks satisfy the current trend for vintage wood
flooring. If you prefer to stay green with your design palate, reclaimed hardwood flooring is an excellent choice as It combines the uniqueness of hand scrapped flooring with the rareness of exotic wood flooring. Luxury vinyl tile and luxury linoleum flooring are making huge comebacks, linoleum most especially because it is eco-friendly . Want a distinctive, contemporary look? De-

signer carpet tiles are trend setters. Chic and stylish, luxury interior designers have no problem paying high prices to obtain this in vogue result. Lastly, save some money for installation. Top dollar flooring will likely require intensive manpower to lay down. Then, when it’s all finished, remember to take a step back and enjoy the view!

THE 2018 HURST HERITAGE BY GSS 50t
Stunning! That’s the word that comes to mind when I laid eyes on another one of Larry Weiner’s Special Edition Vehicles. I remember the feeling of watching him unload the very first Hurst Heritage Edition Kenne Bell R-Code Mustang at the Television Motion Picture Car Club’s Annual Car Show at CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California on July 4, 2016... Just Stunning! If you’re wondering what the TMPCC is, they are an entertainment industry car club that not only has some very recognizable television and motion picture personalities in their club, but they also have a strong pool of talented car designers and builders who have appeared on television or built vehicles for motion pictures. With members like Chip Foose from “Overhaulin”, Rick Dore from “Lords of the Car Hoards”, Steve Strope from “Hand Built Hot Rods”, Troy Ladd from the upcom-
ing television show “The Ride That Got Away” and many more, it truly is a privilege to have Larry and his wife Debbie in the TMPCC family. Not only because they are wonderful and talented people, but because it allows them to display their rides at TMPCC events. And Larry has even appeared on another TMPCC members show, Stacey David’s “Gearz”. The rich heritage of world-class muscle cars that Larry designs, builds and offers through GSS Supercars is impressive. This November I had a chance to speak with Larry about his latest creation, the 2018 Hurst Heritage by GSS 50th Anniversary Dodge Challenger, which was unveiled at the 2018 SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Larry has found success in so many ways over the years. He recently moved from Southern California to a beautiful home on five acres in Oregon; he’s built hundreds of cus-
tom super muscle cars for exclusive clients; he works with a world-class talent team; has a personal collection of some very special classics; and he also has a wonderful wife who has been with him through thick and thin for the last 40 years. Building new generation Mr. Norm’s Mopars (which was a legendary MOPAR performance dealership in Chicago during the muscle car era of the 1960’s and early ‘70’s) and spearheading the exclusive recreations of Hurst limited edition modern muscle was not Larry’s first career. But the car community is all the better for his decision to get involved in the custom car manufacturing world. Supported every step of the way by his best friend and wife Debbie, Larry has been designing and building custom cars professionally for more than 25 years. This includes designing and building dozens of rides that have been on display at
SEMA. So what drives Larry Weiner’s passion to create his finely crafted modern classics? Like most car guys, it began in his early teen years watching the car scene develop on the southwest side of Chicago. Nostalgia for those golden years of hanging out with friends, friendly street races and moving from one fast car to the next helped form his calling. Nostalgia is that personal happy feeling of connection to the past. For us car lovers, that nostalgia typically involves fast and cool muscle cars from the 60s. One of the most beautiful special edition muscle cars from that era - the 1968 Hurst Olds 442 - came from the collaboration between two iconic companies – Hurst and Oldsmobile. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of this classic, GSS Supercars teamed up with Hurst to create the 2018 Hurst Heritage by GSS 50th

Anniversary Dodge Challenger. Designer Larry Weiner gives us insight into the thought process of creating a new legend. Larry: “To us, designing and building the Hurst Heritage By GSS 50th Anniversary Challenger, a thoroughly modern muscle car that celebrates an iconic classic like the 1968 Hurst Olds 442 required a faithful approach and attention to detail. The first thing we took into consideration was the fact that there are 50 years of separation between the 2018 Hurst Heritage By GSS 50th Anniversary Challenger and the original 1968 Hurst Olds 442. As we all know, there have been significant changes in performance, safety, emissions and certainly design during the last half century. The fact is, these vehicles are decidedly different in many ways, yet they share the fundamental attributes that make them appealing to enthusiasts of all ages who admire and desire high performance muscle
cars that celebrate both eras. As an example, enhancing the similarities are the bulges from the Challenger Wide Body Fender Flares that almost mirror the fender bulges that were prominent on the 1968 Hurst Olds 442, adding further credibility to the choice of the Challenger. Carefully taking into consideration the differences, and in some cases, similarities, our goal was to create a real-world modern tribute to the '68 Hurst Olds 442 based on the 2018 Challenger Hellcat Wide Body.” When setting out to pay homage to a classic, choosing the right modern car is key, especially since Oldsmobile isn’t around anymore to provide a 2018 Cutlass. Larry: "The new Challenger is more similar in shape to the vintage 442 than any muscle car built today, however the proportions and design cues are much different. The goal was to remain as faithful as possible to the original contrasting
graphics on the 1968 Hurst Olds 442 while making sure that they flattered the appearance and body lines of the Challenger. The contrasting stripes on the hood and body sides, along with the one year only black overlay that covers the trunk lid and frames the rear window was another cue that we were determined to emulate with the new Challenger.” With the right car selected as the canvas, there were several more challenges to get this tribute correct. Larry: “The first challenge we had to face was the wheels. The new 2018 - 2019 Challenger Hellcat Wide Body, Demon, Red Eye and the R/T Scat Pack Wide body models require not only a wider wheel, but a significantly different offset than a standard Challenger. The wheel we developed consists of a forged center that was cut out of a solid block of billet on a CNC machine. The design of the center looks exactly like the posi-
tive offset Hurst Stunner wheels we have been using on standard width Hurst Heritage By GSS Challengers, but are designed to favor a more nearly zero offset, complemented by backspacing designed to accommodate the fender flares that increase the body width by 3.5 inches. As a result of the wider wheels that are required on a Hellcat Wide Body, a highly visible section of the rim is exposed beyond the center. This is complemented by a smooth lip, the combination of which hints at the appearance of the late 1960’s wheel trim rings that were standard equipment on most muscle cars of the era, including the 1968 Hurst Olds 442. As a final note on wheels, a stock Hellcat Wide Body utilizes 20-inch x 11-inch wheels at all four corners. We stayed with 20-inch x 11-inch on the front but increased the rears to 20-inch x 12-inch, matched with a 345/30ZR20 tires. The result is a tire with a larger contact patch for
enhanced traction.” The next challenge was color. The 1968 Hurst Olds 442 was silver, accented with gloss black primary stripes and white pinstripes. The big surprise that none of us saw coming for the 2019 model year was that silver would be discontinued as a standard Challenger color. The original plan was to order the Challengers in Billet Silver and paint the gloss black primary stripes and overlays, along with the white pinstripes. When we found out that silver had been discontinued as a color for Challengers, we decided that there was a silver lining to the dark cloud. The solution was to custom paint each Hurst Heritage By GSS 50th Anniversary Challenger the actual color used on the original 1968 Hurst Olds 442: Peruvian Silver Metallic. Each Challenger will be ordered in black, completely disassembled and custom painted in Peruvian Silver Metallic, then reassembled. While this creates
a significant amount of work and expense, the result will be a 50th Anniversary tribute that is even more faithful to the original than we had planned. Plus, since this is a custom painted car, it will add to the cachet of the 50th Anniversary Challengers that celebrate the lineage to the original 1968 Hurst Olds 442. Serious Hurst enthusiasts will appreciate the attention to detail and the goal to “get it right.” Another challenge was interior design and color. The interior on the 1968 Hurst Olds 442 featured the standard factory 442 vinyl seat covers. While the color of all of the 1968 Hurst Olds 442 interiors was black, enthusiasts today demand a choice of color, patterns and even contrast stitching. We have worked with Katzkin to develop a very distinctive custom leather interior that reflects the combination of modern and vintage themes that are available in several different colors. Not only
are they attractive, but it also empowers the enthusiast to create a unique interior that best suits his / her taste and desire for personalization." With all of this amazing attention to detail, you can see why discerning clients trust Larry and his team to build their dream car. Larry shared with us a few very special touches that are available as options on the new 2018 Hurst Heritage By GSS 50th Anniversary Challenger. • Red Fender Liners that are inspired by the original red fender liners that were an option on the 1968 Hurst Olds 442 • Door Panels that feature contrasting Tek Stitch Diamond Inserts • Custom Leather Seat Covers with Tek Stitch Diamond Full Faces including upper and lower waterfalls • Front splitter Larry works with each client to make sure their car is unique. There are some variables and design choices within the Hurst Heritage 50th Anniversary Challenger program that
can help ensure that each vehicle in the limited edition serial numbered production run is a 1 of 1 build. Passion based on nostalgia for the cool trends and themes from the past can lead to great things. If you drove a Hurst Olds 442 back in the day, this new interpretation is seriously calling your name. “If all the people [who placed reservations] buy this car, then we are sold out for the first year,” said Porsche Cars North America CEO Klaus Zellmer. Formerly the “Mission E,” the Porsche Taycan is a hugely anticipated all electric Porsche that is going to set the electric sports car market on fire. Porsche has made a tremendous investment in the future of electric vehicles and is going to undoubtedly devour the segment that has thus far been reserved to Tesla. The Taycan which translated as “lively young horse will boast the drivability of a 911 Turbo. Similar to the Tesla, Porsche will offer different power levels for consumers to choose from. The top-of-the-line four-wheel-drive 450kW, is expected to better the 0-62mph of 3.5sec. This places the Taycan on par with the 911 Turbo for outright accelerative ability. Wow! The choice of going electric has been, to this point monopolized by Tesla. The challenge to many future Telsa owners who have been on a waiting list or are considering going Telsa is brand loyalty to Porsche. Porsche owners are tremendously loyal, and it is a brand that is defined by excellence and innovation. An incredible dealer network, supply chain, the quality of the fit and finish which, is hard for any brand to compete with, Musk is going to have to turn on the afterburner for sure. There is no doubt that Telsa set the standard, but as we all know, Porsche is not a brand to sit idly by and take second place. It is going to be a race in the newest automotive space. The future of the automobile is electric and Porsche is all in. Speaking to Porsche enthusiasts who also tend to be brand purists, they have see that transition from hybrid to electric and it seems that they are welcoming this new era with open arms. Porsche is smart to balance the Taycan like the traditional 911 and to have the interior feel like a new and innovated cockpit while maintaining an ease of use for current Porsche owners. It drives and feels like a Porsche, the performance is all there, it just doesn’t have the tried and true flat four/six boxer engine singing loud as you press the gas pedal. Suffice to say, I am sure that every Porsche collector has their name on the Taycan list, order put in and is simply waiting for the future to arrive. All others be warned, Porsche is electrified. Porsche Taycan reservation holders have received the following letter welcoming them to the future of Porsche: We’d like to personally thank you for enrolling in the Porsche Taycan Depositor Option Program. For over 70 thrilling years, Porsche’s mission has been driven by one question: What does the sports car of the future look like? This pursuit of innovation and embrace of the unexpected is what pushes us to bring concepts like the Taycan to fruition, and it wouldn’t be possible without the continuing support of enthusiasts like you. The Taycan marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for us: the very first all-electric sports car with a Porsche soul. It is the embodiment of a marriage of electricity and emotion that could only be found in a Porsche. We’ll continue to be in touch in the coming months as we eagerly await the arrival of the Taycan. Additionally, please find enclosed a certificate marking your official status as a participant in this program. We thoroughly appreciate your continued commitment to the future of sports cars. Sincerely, Klaus Zellmer CEO, Porsche Cars North America Pedro Mota VP, Marketing, Porsche Cars North America

From Porsche: The name can be roughly translated as “lively young horse”, referencing the imagery at the heart of the Porsche crest, which has featured a leaping steed since 1952. “Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom”, explains Oliver
Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. The oriental name also signifies the launch of the first electric sports car with the soul of a Porsche. Porsche announced the name for its first purely electric series as part of the “70 years of sports cars” ceremony. Two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) with a
system output of over 600 hp (440 kW) accelerate the electric sports car to 100 km/h in well under 3.5 seconds and to 200 km/h in under twelve seconds. This performance is in addition to a continuous power level that is unprecedented among electric vehicles: Multiple jump starts are possible in succession without loss of performance, and the vehicle’s
maximum range is over 500 km in accordance with the NEDC. Names with real meaning At Porsche, the vehicle names generally have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics: The name Boxster describes the combination of the boxer engine and roadster design; Cayenne denotes fieriness,
the Cayman is incisive and agile, and the Panamera offers more than a standard Gran Turismo, which is what allowed it to win the Carrera Panamericana long-distance race. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger, with connotations of suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics. Future investment doubled
Porsche plans to invest more than six billion euro in electromobility by 2022, doubling the expenditure that the company had originally planned. Of the additional three billion euro, some 500 million euro will be used for the development of Taycan variants and derivatives, around one billion euro for electrification and hybridisation of the existing product
range, several hundred million for the expansion of production sites, plus around 700 million euro for new technologies, charging infrastructure and smart mobility.
Aventador SVJ ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN PHOTOS BY LAMBORGHINI @guyintheorangehat
The Fastest and most powerful Lamborghini ever produced, The Aventador SVJ. The ‘J’ stands for “Jota,” the most extreme version of any Lamborghini model. Lamborghini pushed the limits in every way taking the flagship Aventador to the highest level. With 770 horsepower, all wheel steering, the naturally aspirated V12 Hypercar has redefined Lamborghini once again as a leader in hypercar category. With boutique hypercar makers like Pagani and Koenigegg leading a charge to redefine what exotic, super exotic or hyper cars are, the ”big boys” in this segment (Ferrari, Lamborhgini, Porsche, McLaren) are pushing the envelope further and further to answer the demand of rare works of art that only the wealthy can own and drive. It has become an all out race to produce the fastest, rarest, most comfortable hypercar that you can actually drive daily if you wanted to. Crazy as it may seem, daily drivability of your hypercar has become a badge of honor. I recently recorded a Pagani Huayra with 40,000 miles for a client. True Story, forty thousand miles!
I have driven every variation of the Lamborghini Avantador with the exception of the SVJ. I remember the first time behind the wheel of the Avatandor, the Lamborghini representative warned me that the shifting was “violent” in Corsa mode. I shrugged it off, until we used the “Launch Control” setting and not only did I have whiplash, but I did see stars for a few seconds. And yes, every shift is violent. You can search back a few years and find the review, back then the car blew me away, and now after years of refinement, the Aventador has been perfected in the SVJ. Fully loaded the car is estimated to be in the $600,000.00 range, a drop in the bucket compared the contenders from the other Hypercar brands. With only 900 examples to be produced, it is an instant collector piece and is believed to be sold out. If you can get your hands on one, well, you have become part of a truly exclusive club. The Aventador Superveloce Jota boasts the fastest lap for any production automobile at Germany’s i Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.
Its time of 6 minutes, 44.97 seconds for the 12.9-mile besting the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. And yes you can take your kid to school in it. It might sound crazy but as a die hard Ferrari fan, Lamborhgini has truly started to warm my heart. The more I have been exposed to them, the more you cannot ignore the science and technology that has been incorporated into the latest models. Somehow Lamborghini has main-
tained that raw, pure emotion and sex appeal that is second to none. The presence of the Aventador let alone the SVJ is hard to compete with and the sound of the V12 screaming, it is amazing the stock exhaust is street legal. And the performace ,zero to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph the SVJ is damn near perfection. • From Lamborghini:

Quail, A Motorsports Gathering”. The distillation of extraordinary design, groundbreaking technologies and the ultimate in handling, performance and driver enjoyment, the Aventador SVJ creates pure driving perfection, taking the concept of a super sports car to a new dimension. The new Aventador SVJ, where SV historically stands for Superveloce - meaning ‘superfast’ - takes
the ‘Jota’ suffix, denoting its track and performance superiority: the Aventador SVJ has already claimed its position as the NürburgringNordschleife production car record holder, completing the 20.6 km lap in just 6:44.97 minutes. Production is limited to 900 units. A special edition, named SVJ 63, is exclusively unveiled on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It pays hom-
age to Lamborghini’s founding year of 1963: produced in a unique configuration, it demonstrates the rich use of carbon fiber and is made in an additional limited number of just 63. “The Aventador SVJ is an innovative car and represents the absolute pinnacle of our super sports car product range,” said Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali. “The challenge to Lamborghini
designers and engineers was to improve the purest essence of the Lamborghini super sports car, drawing on every inspiration from a space ship to a jet fighter: all the most exceptional examples of super-fast, superathletic, aerodynamic superiority. The Aventador SVJ takes another step into the future, shaping the potential for super sports car development.”

Carroll Shelby Cruise-In
The Legacy of An Automotive Master Lives On ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY STEVE GELDMAN, IMAGE PHOTO MOTORSPORTS @imagephotomotorsports
What can be a better way to start the new year than to celebrate the birthday for the late automotive master, Carroll Shelby? The first weekend of 2019 was just that when the Petersen Automotive Museum hosted an exclusive 2-day event including a once-in-a-lifetime panel discussion of legendary Shelby race drivers such as Allen Grant and Vince LaViolette. Then on Sunday, one of the largest planned Shelby gatherings in the country was planned on the 3rd level parking structure at the Petersen. This was the 5th Annual Cruise-In celebration honoring the birthday of Carroll Shelby. We sadly lost him in May of 2012, but with his Ford-Shelby highperformance cars and trucks being built to this day, his legacy will live on indefinitely. R a i n had been an issue on Saturday, but the clouds opened-up Sunday morning for the cruise-in. However, the roads were still wet by early morning. About 700 people and 400 Mustang’s and Cobra’s had preregistered to attend the cruise-in but apparently the thought of having any wet debris splattering in the wheelwells of these exotics was too much for some owners to bear, especially those traveling distances from the San Diego and Inland Empire areas. The good news is many did arrive to fill the parking area with some amazing Shelby influenced muscle cars that were seen, admired and photographed. Special thanks go to Bruce Meyer, Petersen Museum founding Chairman, Lance Stander, CEO of Orange County’s Superformance
drivenworld...38
and Doug Campbell of Hillbank Motorsports, the latter two being the larger show sponsors at this event. Many classic originals as well as replicas were on display. Don’t be fooled by the term replica. Some of these finely crafted vehicles are so close to the originals, only the experts can find the subtle differences, as few as there might be. Plus think of it this way, would you like to own an original and have it stored in your garage 99.9% of the time or own a replica and drive it just about any time you desire? Either way, you and your ride will be posted on dozens of Facebook and Instagram accounts as soon as your tires roll onto the asphalt. Those owners not afraid of the wet pavement arrived in an amazing array of Shelby history. These included Mustang based GT-350, GT350H, GT350R, GT500, GT50KR and Cobra based Daytona Coupes, 260MKI, 289MKII, 427MKIII. Hillbank Motorsports also provided some car candy such as a GT40 MK I and an assortment of Cobra’s. Looking at what these nice folks from Hillbank offer for sale at reasonable prices in newly built gorgeous replicas by Superformance is quite surprising. It would not be fair to Mr. Shelby himself if left out of his own story. Born in 1923, he was a race driver as well as an automotive designer. For racing, Shelby competed in many events including Formula One in 1958/59 totaling eight World Championship races. Also in ’59, Shelby co-drove (with
Roy Salvadori) to a 1st Place victory in an Aston Martin DBR1 for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Shelby retired from racing that same year. It was from these races that led Shelby as a designer and later automotive builder. With help from AC Motors of England, he started on his first creation. Basically, Shelby asked the British racing car manufacturer to drop a Ford V8 engine into their existing AC Ace sports car. With this new power plant, he renamed it the AC Cobra. Shelby then obtained U.S. approval to import this car into the country. The rest, as they say, is history. Shelby later collaborated with Ford with the Mustang and Dodge with the Viper as well as a host of other Dodge models. Shelby then worked with already ailing Oldsmobile and designed the ‘Series 1’ in 1999. It was his only designed car built from scratch but only 249 cars were produced. These vehicles were powered by an Oldsmobile 4.0L V8. Ultimately Shelby returned to Ford and by 2004, concepts were being built, presented at U.S. auto shows and winning awards. In 2006 Ford-Shelby introduced the CS6, a V-6 Mustang pushing out 380 hp. Only few were built and today its one of the rarest of Shelby cars. Why only few built? Ford felt that this powerful V-6 would hurt existing less horsepowered Mustang V8 sales. Ford decided to quickly cancel the production of the CS6. The FordShelby 500 hp Mustang GT500 soon followed in 2006. Shelby and Ford continued to work together producing other high-performance cars and trucks which continues to this day. Shelby was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1991, the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1992, the Diecast Hall of Fame in 2009 and the SCCA Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2008 Shelby was awarded the Automotive Executive
of the Year. What a man, what a legend! Keep your eyes peeled for January 2020 as it is very likely the 6th Annual Carroll Shelby Birthday Cruise-In celebration will again be hosted at the Petersen. We hope to see you there!
