Chairman’s Message

Attitude Amazing projects have empowered and courageous clients, working with masterful designers using the best materials, methods and suppliers. Insight Back in 2007, I observed a skew in the design market that saw more than 90% of the conversations around design coming from practices, with very little being heard from the demand side - the commissioners. What were the needs of commissioners and how did they think about design?

4

Vision DRIVENxDESIGN was founded to engage with both sides - supply and demand - to celebrate the driving dynamic between the courage to commission a project and the courage to propose a solution. Methods Awards were our first channel to assist that goal, later adding design summits, project films and design executive dinners. After 10 short years, we have created a global movement for a new era of design, an era bedded in the boardroom, driving economic and cultural returns.

Executive Design The rise of executive design took hold in 2014. To use a tech-industry term, we saw a pivot, seeing scores of companies placing design as a key strategic driver, resulting in eight out of the ten most valuable companies by market cap being driven by design. The Experience Economy These industry leaders know that their market value is based in the experience of their customers. Technology is the enabler, experience is the value driver.

Respect Thanks to the 6,000+ brands and 2,500+ studio collaborators, and the millions of design-inspired that we’ve reached. Future Welcome to those just joining us on growing the impact of human centred design. The next 10 years will be exciting, exhilarating and rewarding. Most importantly they’ll be driven by design.

Founder & Awards Chair, DRIVENxDESIGN Mark Bergin

DRIVENxDESIGN Executives Club

Welcome to our loyalty program – recognising significant community contributions. The Design Executives Club is a global network of like-minded design leaders, all working to grow the sophistication and excellence of design in their organisations. The club’s goal is to help address design executives’ needs through providing utility beyond the awards/recognition programs. Throughout the year, club members are invited to exclusive dinners, events and forums to collaborate and share insights, providing peer on peer networking on a global scale. DRIVENxDESIGN.com/DEC

DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Briefings We have been providing strategy/ insight briefings to major brands and studios across the globe for 10 years. The awards engine sees over 7,000 design projects per year, providing unique insights into the macro trends and innovations in the design industry. Since launching the NOW Awards, we have rolled our insights into a quarterly global briefing program across eight markets. DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Tours Since beginning our regular global tours we have noticed a trend – people want to join in. This began with the Design Summits, initially attracting people from across the globe, some travelling to one city, others turning up repeatedly. Being the hospitable people we are, we wanted to turn this coincidence into a definite thing. This year we have five tours before year end, so join us and your fellow design executive peers. The Jury

The NOW Awards

The design award juries are formed from a global panel of over 200 design leaders sourced from Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Berlin, London, Reykjavik, New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

NOW is a global, monthly, curated design awards program that seeks out and recognises extraordinary design projects.

2018 sees a new phase where all programs are being judged by out of town jury members, minimising potential conflicts and expanding our global view for the projects.

The awards provide timely recognition and industry insights across the global market. Nominations are sourced through recommendations from our 200+ global panel and nominated projects. The nominations deadline is the 10th of each month.

This also gives us the opportunity to promote 40 local design leaders into global markets – another way to extend Sydney design to the global stage.

Winners are announced on the first Thursday of every month, alongside a podcast discussing the GOLD winners.

What is the point of a physical showroom in the age of internet shopping? What is the value of an “Australian brand” when we live in a global society with global supply chains? How as consumers, do we choose wisely when there are so many products on offer? These are some of the questions we attempted to answer through our investigation of the showroom experience in Caroma on Collins. The project embodies a familiar Australian brand and seeks to communicate its values through volume, symbol, and material rather than signage, marketing strategy, and slideshow images.

Positioned at the southwest extent of the Barangaroo South precinct, Barangaroo House is the outcome of design excellence competition organised by Lendlease and the Barangaroo Delivery Authority. The overarching design strategy was borne of two crucial responses to site and brief: the urban response of a building ‘in-the-round’, and the holistic integration of planting; both edible and ornamental. The ambition of the project is the creation of a welcoming, timeless, convivial structure, that over time becomes a much loved part of the city.

Team Prospace Design - Interior Design Al-Chami Projects - Project Management Cordony Design - Interior Design + Styling

With a vision to break the mould of how Real Estate is sold, this space took on the role of being a place to come together for staff and clients; not a traditional office. Drawing on luxury residential cues, the boardroom feels more like a dining room, the meeting room appears more like a lounge room with an elevated sense of luxury flowing through to the workspace. An impeccable focus on materiality and texture, raw honed stone, fabric wall papers, exotic veneers, hand cut leather panelling and curved frameless glass all came together with the amazing styling of Cordony Design.

Mikalojus Konstantinas C̆iurlionis Concert Centre Project Commissioner Malcolm Reading Consultants Creator MHNDU

MHNDU’s Mikalojus Konstantinas C̆iurlionis Concert Centre design, through its form and materiality offers not only quality internal areas for musicians and patrons but also exemplary public spaces for the people of Kaunas. The primary goal of the masterplan was to connect cultural infrastructure development with the future growth of the city. Our design is also deeply informed by the site’s ecological value and the part that the site will play in the restoration of the river’s edge. We saw an opportunity to redraw the edge of the river to give rise to a changeable and playful landscape, borrowing from the dynamic quality of water and the artwork of M.K. C̆iurlionis.

GNC is an innovative community based housing project that focuses on bringing housing, social and commercial opportunity into an area that is lacking on these fronts. The local community has joined together to fund the project to provide affordable housing. The intention is to acknowledge the opportunities and constraints of the existing neighbourhood, and to embrace council objectives for creating a neighbourhood centre. The site is zoned as a neighbourhood centre which is, as yet, underdeveloped and will require significant change from its current industrial use to realise the B1 Neighbourhood Centre Zone objectives. GNC is conceived of as the first piece of the entire neighbourhood centre block.

74-76 Campbell Street Surrry Hills is a five-storey heritage listed building at the intersection of Elizabeth Street. The neighbourhood’s stories and buildings date back to the 1840’s, however it was during the 1920’s that it was home to generations of Chinese immigrant families working in the numerous sweat shops that served the precincts thriving rag trade - it soon became an influential hub and source of local and foreign news for the community. Today, MUSE is a different kind of community. In 2017, the building was transformed into a private creative community set within the industrial heritage of yesteryear with the best of both original architecture and sophisticated, innovative interior design.

The Orchards is one of the most significant residential masterplanned communities to be introduced to Australia in over a decade. This luxury $1.4B residential project is positioned amid the urban renewal of the Norwest and located on what was NSW’s first orangery established in the early 1800’s. The development comprises 7 stages and 1,300 apartments across 8.8 hectares and heralds an exciting new benchmark for Sydney living. Toast Creative was commissioned by Sekisui House to capture the essence of The Orchards Masterplan with a brand logo mark and visual language. Australian technology innovator amp. focuses on adapting medical science to provide effective skin care solutions. With the launch of their first product ‘Hyaluronic Eye Device Patches’ Made Somewhere was tasked with the creation of the amp. brand, packaging, collateral and ultimately taking the product to market. Made Somewhere’s brief was in the creation of the amp. brand, packaging, illustrations, collateral and taking the product to market. The brand had to be both aspirational and achievable and demonstrate the technologic led background of amp. as well as sit in the beauty realm. As amp. was a premium skin care solution and the first true wearable, digital anti-ageing solution on the market in Australia it was imperative that the brand and packaging were premium, engaging and userfocused in design and functionality.

Team Nicoletta Braach-Maksvytis Designer Kerby Rosanes - Illustrations Mark Haygarth - Creative Director

Hunt and Brew was born out of a brief to create a premium cold brew coffee range for launch in WA, made using the finest single origin beans and fresh WA milk. Insights from research showed that young adults were looking for a more boutique product that reflected their desire for coffees from local, specialty cafes. Hunt and Brew needed to create a product that answered the consumer need for a premium, chilled coffee that delivered a full-bodied and satisfying flavour experience. With competition growing in the WA Flavoured Milk category, it was imperative that Hunt and Brew went to market with a brand that felt bold enough to enter the target market; 25 – 45 year old ‘hipsters’ seeking the ultimate coffee hit.

The Play Pod originated through a collaboration between two leaders in design thinking and placemaking - Hoyne and Scott Carver. They recognised that Sydney, like any metropolis, has many underutilised, ugly or unsafe vacant spaces dotted around the city. They asked, “how can these spots be put to better use for the community?”. From this, the Play Pod was born, making its debut at the Sydney Design Festival. Flexible and portable, the Play Pod is so much more than the sum of its sides. Multifaceted and engaging, its modular design can be manipulated for a variety of uses creating new spaces for experiences to unfold. A play area for kids. A space to unwind. A library. A classroom. A cinema. A stage… how you use it is up to you.

Teneo is Lenland’s impressive boutique collection of 61 contemporary apartments and terraces grouped across five storeys, located in Ralph Street, Alexandria. As a truly inner-city suburb that has shed its industrial past, Alexandria has become one of city’s most talked-about locales. Lenland and property management company CBRE were acutely aware of the Teneo’s competition as part of the area’s revitalisation. The team commissioned Toast Creative to conceive a fresh and different approach and to create and produce a full-bodied campaign that could set the development apart with a genuine point of difference. While the marketing campaign was indeed genuine, it also ticked the boxes of unusual, surprising and culturally exciting.

Applaws is a premium UK dog and cat food brand known for its highgrade ingredients. Competing in a saturated market in Australia and New Zealand it was suffering from low brand awareness amongst an enormous range of price points and quality disparity. Applaws is available in major retailers and has veterinarian endorsement where it is also sold, as well as on multiple online pet sites. The impressive Australian pet ownership statistics made clear the opportunity that Applaws wanted a slice of. The Applaws team approached Toast to put together a sustained strategic marketing programme to help the brand build a greater share of voice, which if effective would grow the brand’s awareness and ultimately gain sales traction in both the Australian and New Zealand markets.

Save the Children is one of Australia’s largest aid agencies dedicated to helping children. Its mission is to support the most vulnerable children in Australia and abroad, protecting them from harm and giving them access to quality education and health services. The organisation’s website plays a critical role in receiving donations and disseminating information about emerging crises and aid requirements. This information is often time-critical, so it’s imperative that the website is efficient and easy for content administrators to use. It’s also vital that it achieves cut-through amid a very crowded charity space. It was with these driving forces in mind that Save The Children approached Get Started to help it redesign and re-platform its website, which was limiting the charity’s ability to fully realise its potential to provide assistance to the children most in need.

Fone King is a leading phone repair and accessories retailer in Australia that launched in 2003 when it became clear that it was rare if you didn’t own a mobile phone. The problem was there was no-one providing advice if things went wrong. In the telecommunications industry the store experience is consistently vibrant, eye catching and cutting edge. Fone King has always stayed ahead of the game in this challenging and fastmoving sector but they realised they had neglected their online presence which was disconnected from the brand’s retail experience. Fone King commissioned Toast Creative to elevate the brand online requiring a website redesign.
