2020 DRIVENxDESIGN Partner levels
4
With market changes accelerating it’s good to have partners. Below you’ll see some amazing design brands that help us and you to go further and faster than if we went alone.
We’ve tweaked and upgraded the Studio Partner Levels to better help Studio Partners with increased profile building, knowledge sharing and executive networking.
For 2020 we’re expanding our partner levels to provide additional support for key industry players.
New for 2020 are Element Partners, Brand Partners and Enterprise Partners. Naturally all Gold or above partners gain instant access to the DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Club, we look forward to welcoming you to the club.
Studio Partner Levels Over the last 5 years we’ve tweaked and evolved the Studio Partner Levels to bring new business priming, peer networking, profile building and finally bulk nomination discounts. Element Partner Levels All design projects wouldn’t exist without key components, for built space projects it might be glassing, furniture, wall & floor coverings, even surface coatings. We’ve come up with new ways to help celebrate the suppliers of these core elements and also help out studios and commissioning clients.
Enterprise Partner Levels Enterprise culture and cadence are key challenges for design centred executives. The Enterprise Partner Levels offer quarterly executive briefing on key industry changes, shifts and insights. It also provides access to our global pool of Better Future Champions - to present or liase with your internal teams to help accelerate innovation and culture programs developing deeper human centered design capacity. Partner Levels drivenxdesign.com/partners
Brand Partners Levels Weather you’re Microsoft, Oracle, Herman Miller or Vitra the design industry is a key market. Through tools, advanced technologies and collaborations. These supporting brands help facilitate the amazing outcomes recognised in the DRIVENxDESIGN Award Programs. The Brand Partner Levels provide opportunity to connect, meet and develop deeper relationships with studio principals and C-Suite design executives.

Better Future
We know we need change. The question is how fast can you change and who’s got some shortcuts to help you accelerate. Since 2018 we’ve been pushing the theme of Better Future, we need to consider not the next quarter, not this year but our grandchildren’s grandchildren - that’s 5 generations.

Chairman’s Message
88
2019 marks the 8th anniversary of the Sydney Design Awards. Now almost a decade into recognising outstanding and courageous design, it seems more important than ever to give recognition to those that are accelerating us into a Better Future – it is what we do now that makes a difference later.
This project began with a simple proposition: in order to grow the design sector, we needed to celebrate the courage of design creators and commissioners. I truly believe that design has the power to transform our world. It is the most proven, reliable and efficient method of transformation.
Over the last 14 years, my expedition to help reframe the discussions around design has provided many personal rewards – it has taken me to places I would not have otherwise been, shown me things I would not have otherwise seen, and most importantly, it has introduced me to people I would not have otherwise met. It is these people that have made this all possible.
However, design has been held a little too tightly by some within the design community. It needed to be set free. Thanks to my fellow pioneers who believed that design doesn’t just belong to designers, but to everybody, we now have a vast global community for those that are free to be driven by design - and the world is better for it.
In 2018 we updated our mission to be all about a Better Future - with live panel discussions, podcasts, the NOW Awards, and a series of Better Future Days to come in 2020. This is not a 10-year goal, but a vision spanning five generations – how can we make a better future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren? Now, let us excite the imaginations of current power brokers to create the only sustainable wealth; the wealth of future generations. There is not much point in striving for billions if there will be no one around to enjoy it. We must invigorate the minds of those who control the trillions of dollars in the economy. I am convinced that it is through their intergenerational interest that we will see the biggest difference.
We live in a time that urgently needs us to turn our focus towards the future. At no stage in modern history have we been treading such a fine line between a better future or a buggered future. I am for a better future, and I imagine if you have read this far then you are too. Again, thank-you to everyone who has been a part of this journey thus far, we have only just begun…

The NOW Awards
The design award juries are formed from a global panel of over 250 design leaders sourced from Melbourne, Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Berlin, London, Reykjavik, New York, Chicago and San Francisco.
NOW is a global, monthly, curated design awards program that seeks out and recognises extraordinary design projects.
2019 sees a new phase where all programs are being judged by out of town jury members, minimising potential conflicts and expanding our global view for the projects.
The awards provide timely recognition and industry insights across the global market. Nominations are sourced through recommendations from our 200+ global panel and nominated projects. The nominations deadline is the 10th of each month.
This also gives us the opportunity to promote 40 local design leaders into global markets – another way to extend Sydney design to the global stage.
Winners are announced on the first Thursday of every month, alongside a podcast discussing the GOLD winners.

DRIVENxDESIGN Executives Club
Welcome to our loyalty program – recognising significant community contributions. The Design Executives Club is a global network of likeminded design leaders, all working to grow the sophistication and excellence of design in their organisations. The club’s goal is to help address design executives’ needs through providing utility beyond the awards/recognition programs. Throughout the year, club members are invited to exclusive dinners, events and forums to collaborate and share insights, providing peer on peer networking on a global scale. DRIVENxDESIGN.com/DEC
DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Briefings We have been providing strategy/ insight briefings to major brands and studios across the globe for 10 years. The awards engine sees over 7,000 design projects per year, providing unique insights into the macro trends and innovations in the design industry. Since launching the NOW Awards, we have rolled our insights into a quarterly global briefing program across eight markets. DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Tours Since beginning our regular global tours we have noticed a trend – people want to join in. This began with the Design Summits, initially attracting people from across the globe, some travelling to one city, others turning up repeatedly. Being the hospitable people we are, we wanted to turn this coincidence into a definite thing. This year we have five tours before year end, so join us and your fellow design executive peers. Better Future Podcast We are in the midst of a surge in boardrooms leveraging design as a strategic tool. In past decades, we have seen design as an operational and artefact-creating tool, today however it is leading strategic growth and accelerating positive transformation. Since February 2015, the fastest growing companies - that is those most valued by market cap, have all been driven by design. Despite the importance of this strategic advantage, it has been flying under the radar with the conversation remaining
almost silent. That is why I created the Design in the Boardroom - Better Future podcast series. I have reached out to my network of design leaders, asking them to share their thoughts without giving away the strategic plans of their organisations. The launch series features 40 design leaders talking about how design is being managed up, down and across their organisations.

The brief was to create a high-quality, landmark design on the spectacular harbour site to capture the vibrancy of Sydney and create a strong new destination on the waterfront. The concept takes its inspiration from nature, composed of an elegant, curved geometry. The tower’s form emanates from three petals that twist and rise together, and its sculptural shape maximises the opportunity for accommodation to make the most of the views of Sydney’s famous bridge and harbour.

This is a re-invention of forecourt convenience retail. BP’s brief to us was to re-examine all aspects of the forecourt retail experience and re-engineer them to provide brighter moments in customers’ days. Each element of the plan, including the registers, self-service areas, drinks fridges, and even the toilets were carefully and purposefully positioned in accordance with where the customer needed them to be.

Bai Cheng Tian Di Shoppingmall Project Commissioner/Creator Hong Kong Fong Wong Architects Group Combining with Jianye Group’s core concept of “Rooted in the Central Plains and Benefit the People”, the interior design takes “Root” as the source of design. Based on its growth form and combined with the typical central plains landform features of flat and slightly sloping topography in Xincai, the design “weaves” a natural dynamic picture of free growth with the staggered growth posture.

Located in the greater airport area, the design concept inspiration comes from the airport design and airliner elements. The colour of the sky set the tone for the colour palette and mood of the hotel. As Wassily Kandinsky quotes, Blue is the typical heavenly colour. The ultimate feeling it creates is one of rest. The guestroom design retains Marriott’s modern business hotel style to maximize guests comfort and enjoyment.

Inspired by Dahl Al Misfir (Cave of Light), the National Museum of Qatar Gift Shops echoes Koichi Takada’s vision of bringing nature back into architecture, establishing relationships that connect people and nature through design. Using 3D modelling software, the shops are a threedimensional puzzle, comprising 40,000 individual wooden pieces. Each is unique, fitting only with its corresponding piece and were assembled by hand on site. The intensity of the design and craftsmanship pays homage to Jean Nouvel’s desert rose inspired architecture and celebrates the natural Qatari heritage of the desert-scape.

Once a conduit for trade, the former rail line is reinterpreted to carry the precious cargo of a thriving neighbourhood - culture, creativity and community. Building on the vision for a pedestrian and cycle connection from Central to Darling Harbour - the design utilises the robust materials associated with its rail infrastructure past – gravel, concrete, steel, and timber.

d.CARE was created to address a gap in the industry, a way to assist dialysis patients to become more involved in their treatment by having access to their treatment data at the tip of their finger. d.CARE displays data from each dialysis session and monthly blood tests. It also enables patients to enter information about their wellbeing in a ‘How I feel’ section. Data can be viewed for each date it was entered and trends can be displayed in a graph. This patient-entered information offers doctors a more complete picture of the individual’s health, which can then be used to monitor and tailor their care.

Matt’s career spans 25 years and three continents. He has worked in global advertising firms, for famous FMCG brands, and some of Australia’s largest companies. Both founders see Thread.Care as a tech start up addressing a problem in the Aged Care sector. This distinction allows them to approach the sector in a significantly different way to other companies in the space. Thread.Care’s art director, Kurt Walsh, played a massive role in bringing the app to where it is today. We also has a dedicated team of historians and researchers that bring to life our residents stories.
