Useful Piano Playing Tips Learning the piano requires practice and discipline. Implementing some of the following tips can help beginners play more skilfully: • Play by Ear: Listening to other expert pianists perform is one of the best ways to improve. Just as athletes benefit from studying film, playing by ear enables budding players to learn from the best. • Play Easy: It’s normal for beginners to apply too much pressure on the keys early on in the process. Over time, relaxing the hands will allow the fingers to glide over the keys softly. • Focus on Accuracy: It’s tempting to want to play fast, but it’s far more important to be accurate. This comes with practice and concentrating on playing the right keys. • Memorise the Music: One of the best habits to learn is memorising the structure of the notes and chords. It’s not an easy task, but with time it makes playing easier. Start by dividing a music piece into various sections and practising each in turn. • Hand Practice: Playing the piano with both hands takes time; conventional practice methods teach each hand separately before moving on to using both.
