foreward H ello everyone, I’m Mimey, new Coordinator of PvP Bootcamp. I’d just like to say to start, welcome!

N

ow, something I’ve always felt about Bootcamp is that it is a foundation, nothing more, nothing less. A means of showing people the basics of how the game works, and letting them go from there. It is also a foundation that must shift, as the game changes. Something I taught in the first class might not necessarily work for this upcoming class.

P

vP itself is actually a very simple thing as well. Even with everything that has been added to the game since the early days, the fundamental core remains the same. If I may quote the movie ‘Patton’ for a moment: “...No

bastard ever won a war, by dying for his country. You won it, by making the other

“...No bastard ever won a war, by dying for his country. You won it, by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for his country.”

poor, dumb bastard die for his country.” Even with how the game has changed, that basic thing has not altered. You win a PvP match by killing the people on the other team, while making sure the people on your team don’t die. Like I said, there are many other things that have been added to the game over time, but no matter what is added, that doesn’t ever change. I look forward to seeing you in Bootcamp!

2013, A Year in Review

B

efore I even start I would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to Kolln, Boot Camp’s outgoing Coordinator for 2013. Kolln’s passion and dedication saw us through a bitter winter. He’s leadership and service to Boot Camp will always be appreciated and remembered. Kolln, thank you - working with you is always such a great honor.

2

013 was a year of tremendous challenge for Boot Camp. Just as we have surmounted one challenge the next was looming not too far! The VA’s were all working almost daily trying to remain relevant to the community, and especially to try and attract new PvPers to the fold. Some of the projects seemed to stir a hornet’s nest, and were more detrimental to what Boot Camp’s purpose was – to teach. I must fully take responsibility for that – I’m a bit of a dreamer.

B

oot Camp is about teaching new players the basics of PvP, to encourage them and support them as they find their own way, and we have recommitted ourselves to Sargon’s original ethos.

I

encourage all active and experienced PvPers who believe they’ve the skills necessary to help grow PvP, to please consider assisting Boot Camp in the next season.

~ Drkfrontiers

GROUND PVP

Ground PvP Boot Camp which was originally started by Pug01 and Guriphu, was unfortunately postponed due to concerns regarding the nature of some of the problems facing certain skills, and weapons being used in ground PvP. Boot Camp will not be givingup on ground PvP. Ground PvP, has a place in Star Trek Online. In the course of the coming months Boot Camp will collaborate with some of the more notable ground enthusiasts to determine our focus and effort.

kolln

outgoing Hello players! I am Kolln, former Coordinator of Boot Camp. First and foremost I would like to share with you what I’ve been experiencing during the past year.

08 BOOT Camp companion guide

T

he experience had moments of tremendous entertaining, others historic! In addition, we’ve had 4 successful sessions completed with so many new PvP’ers graduating. We hope they are better than when they first started. I guess that by now most of you would kill me with little effort, by now, in a 1 vs. 1 match. As always after each season, we elect a new Coordinator, so we remain representative and relevant.

E

ach Boot Camp Coordinator establishes constructive teaching methods to provide the best knowledge we have at hand.

A

t this time I would like to CONGRATULATE Mimey, as he is the new Coordinator for Boot Camp! I will continue to support Boot Camp, in as many ways I can and I encourage those who enjoy teaching and think they have something to share with the students to do the same.

T

he most important thing that matters is that as a community we continue to help new players and share our knowledge with those that are seeking aid. In that way, we can leave a proud legacy of our contributions to PvP for future players. ~ Kolln

PvP Etiquette

To many, success seems to come suddenly. When you observe others and what they have achieved you usually don’t appreciate what it has taken for them to get where they are. Ultimately, in failing to do this you also fail to learn what it would take for you to attain the same level of achievement and success. But, if you take the time to truly think about it, you will find that success is usually only a small step away. Yet despite that it eludes most people. It is always so near and yet so far.

H

ave you ever wondered why, a lot of times, you just can’t seem to make any progress in PvP despite the fact that you know so much about what it takes to succeed?

S

o many times I have encounteredd players that express a sense of frustration and the feeling that perhaps such things just don’t work, or at least not for them. That’s usually how we get to feel when there is a gap between our knowledge and our actions.

I

t’s about clarity, purpose, and setting the intention of what, and who you want to be and represent in PvP. I once

believed foolishly, that my actions and habits were not taken notice of - boy was I wrong! Even in a virtual world, like Star Trek Online, there’s a world of frienships, rivalries and healthy competition.

W

hen participating in anything, I hold myself to a very simple philosophy.

“How would I like to be treated.”

S

imple but effective - it reminds me not to just run “amuck” in the game. It provides me the opportunity to practice being considerate towards my fellow players.

10 BOOT Camp companion guide

N

o matter how trivial the task, be it when I’m starting Epoph scanning, and I see someone already busy with theirs, I stand off to one side and give them the chance to finish, because that’s what I would hope happens when I am doing my runs. A simple example, but it drives home the point I’m trying to make.

P

vP is thoroughly enjoyable when played from this mindset. It establishes a respectful, and competitive framework for both sides to participate in

an environment of mutual respect.

S

o many times I have found myself asking, “Why do that?”, when I see a player immediately equip something questionable after I’ve beaten him in a fair fight.

“You always have choices.”

N

o matter what situation you are in, you have a choice. No matter how bad things are, you have a choice. No matter what you think you can or cannot do, you have a choice.

N

ow it may not be an easy choice, by any means. It may be a very difficult choice and the road you decide to take may be a tough one. It may push you way out of your comfort zone. It may mean that in the initial period your learning may get even more challenging than it already is. But it is a choice nonetheless.

A

lot of times you will actually find that the choices are not as hard as you thought they were. You may just have shut off your mind from seeing

those choices and possibilities because you thought you had no choice. Once you become open to the idea that you are responsible for your actions in PvP, and that you have choices, you will find that you are no longer stuck just because PvP is so difficult.

One team, led by Ambassador Worf, developed a smaller, more nimble ship intended to combat enemies who rely on speed as a defense. In honor of his contributions to the project, Ambassador Worf was allowed to name the new starship class. Scimitar dreadnought

scimitar DECLASSIFIED.

T E

he scimitar is a very adaptable starship; a captain can either decide to go full “tank” or rather focus on “dps” with her. One can easily decide to tank damage, while at the same time, dealing it. The playstyle

the captain adopts will determine which gear they will require. ach of the 3 Scimitar-class Warbirds comes with it’s own special console. For each 2 or 3 console’s slotted on the same ship, you receive a bonus. The consoles from the scimitar 3 pack are strong on their own,

but even better when combined.

T

he SINGULARITY DISTRIBUTOR UNIT console, is a must have on your scimitar class, this console enables shields while you are cloaked, this makes you less vulnerable to torpedo attacks.

T

he SECONDARY SHIELDING CONSOLE gives you the ability to activate a second layer of shielding - although you cannot heal this layer, it does soak-up a significant amount of damage, and gives you the ability to repair your main shields while the second layer is in affect.

T W

he last console, CLOAKED BARRAGE let you fire your weapons while you are cloaked for a brief period of time.

hen you equip 2 of the console’s on the same ship, you will get a small bonus (+2) to your turn rate, and when you decloak, you will keep the turn rate bonus from the cloak, as long as the decloak bonus

16 BOOT Camp companion guide

( 12-20 seconds, depending on bridge officer and captain traits) is active.

W

hen you equip all 3 of the console’s you can enable the Thalaron blast - a massive area of effect damage dealing ability. Use it carefully, because it needs to charge for 12 seconds, and in the 12 second charge, you can’t use boff ability’s, or move your ship. Use it carefully and plan ahead.

P

ersonally I did go with a mix; my intention is to deal a good amount of damage, and to be able to defend myself at the same time. The path to success was a long one and did take same time and adjustments, but in the end, I can say that the scimitar performs very well, and that I love the ship and its wide variety of options. I did encounter a few problems along the road, and I know a few people who encountered the same problems.

M

y solution to the most common problems follows:

[1] Most people say that the Scimitar doesn’t turn well, and

I have to agree on that. Hope is not lost, for there is a way to counter it, effectively and without too much trouble.

As I explained above, when you equip 2 of the 3 console’s you will get a nice boost to your turn rate. I strongly advise you use the SINGULARITY DISTRIBUTOR UNIT console, and a console of choice. Secondly, I suggest the Fleet Dilithium Mine consoles. The ENHANCED RCS ACCELERATOR MK XII [+ALLRES] console’s (+10.6 Kinetic

Damage Resistance, 10.6 All Energy Damage Resistance, +42.5% Flight Turn Rate), afford you an average turn rate, but more than enough to use Dual Heavy Cannons without too much trouble. Because of the substantial hull the Scimitar, the RCS consoles with + all energy damage resist are a good and safe choice.

[2] The Scimitar uses a singularity core; this does mean that you have slightly lower power levels, which is a second most common problem people face when building a Scimitar, or any Romulan vessel. The answer to this problem is the PLASMONIC LEECH, this console drains subsystem power from your target, and add it to your own, you would almost think it came off a Borg ship, but it doesn’t! If your Romulan/ Reman made the choice to join the Federation, the only way to get it is from the cross faction pack, they are however expensive, and not easy accessible for new captains, or captains who can’t spend that much on 1 console. If you were fortunate to sign-up with the Klingon Empire, the Plasmonic Leech comes from a C-store ship, the VANDAL DESTROYER, this is an account wide unlock, so you can use it as many times as you wish.

nother, and more accessible way, is to use the KLINGON HONOR GUARD, or the ADAPTED MACO deflector and engine, they are accessible from T5 Omega reputation, and add a bonus to your power levels as well.

scimitar

Those are the most common faced problems, and their solutions.

M

ost captains are going to love the scimitars hangar bay - a hangar bay in general adds a lot of options, but the scimitars special ships, the Romulan Drone’s, are very powerful, no matter if you go offense, or defense. They come with Beam Overload, Beam Fire at Will, and Sensor Distortion, with sensor distortion temporarily disables the enemy’s sensors, making you appear as a friendly vessel. They can also copy the appearance of the enemy’s faction, and add confusing on the battlefield that way. They are highly advisable.

M

any captains fear it, many captains deny

its existence, but for many captains it’s their downfall. The Scimitar Warbird, and it sisters, the Tulwar and the Falchion, are extremely powerful in the right hands. They do need however, “special” treatment to use them to their full capability.

or me, the Scimitar is the ultimate Warbird, it does need a lot of thought and a lot of patience to let it perform to its maximum capacity, but in the end it is totally worth it. I use it with much fun and success in both PvE, and PvP, and I don’t regret a single moment of it.

scimitar dreadnought D

uring the late 24th Century, the Scimitar was developed covertly by a group of Remans under the command of Shinzon, a clone of Jean-Luc Picard.

T

hough equipped with numerous weapons and housing a contingent of Scorpion Fighters, the original Scimitar’s key feature was the ability to utilize Thalaron radiation as a terrifying weapon. Shinzon first used a smaller thalaron radiation device to kill the entire Romulan Senate, and then relied on the Scimitar’s strength to back his overthrow of the Romulan government.

P

raetor Shinzon attempted to deploy the Scimitar’s thalaron generator in the Battle of the Bassen Rift against the U.S.S. Enterprise-E and two Romulan ships, but the Enterprise’s crew prevented the weapon from being fired and destroyed the Scimitar – albeit at a heavy cost.

S

ince the Battle of the Bassen Rift, both the Tal Shiar and the Romulan Republic have developed new variants based on the original ship design. The Scimitar-class, Falchion-class, and Tulwar-class of Romulan Dreadnought Warbirds represent the Romulan Republic’s latest iterations on this technology.

understanding keybinds! At first glance keybinds, especially to someone unfamiliar with code syntax, can understandably have a pretty terrible time trying to grasp their function. Keybinds are an integral part of any modern game, and allow end-users the ability to reassign keys based on their own comfort and ease-of-use. Cryptic Studios has taken this philosophy even further, permitted players to define their own keybind arguments through the main chat UI, as well as the association of a keybind file.

Accessing you keybinds through the main game interface Once you have logged into Star Trek Online, you can immediately see the options button located as the gear on the lefthand-side of the minimap.

OPTIONS The options menu contains a list of useful functions which I will cover in the following aid.

24 BOOT Camp companion guide

Controls Located under the CONTROLS Tab is an important configuration defining how you enteract with other objects, such as NPC’s and players during combat. Below is the optimal configuration for PvP, but a word of caution. “Never auto target objects” and “Never auto target pets” - although this allows you to rapidly respond to only player threats switching targets more effectivly, it does blind you to any threats caused by mines, targetable torpedoes, and pets.

important areas to note There are some very important areas to pay close attention to when setting-up one’s keybinds. I will run through how I use mine to demonstrate the principle.

26 BOOT Camp companion guide

Make sure to check that you are setting-up the right keybinds! Often I have caught myself setting-up the wrong ones! Below pay attention to your Power Level presets, as well as the defining presets for weapons and get to understand when it time to use them. For example, if you are running torpedoes, saving them for an exposed hull would allow them to be put to better use. Don’t let that window of opportunity fall by the way side because you are needlessly spamming your keys.

(Note: Some of the keys below appear not to be used. This is because I prefer to have each weapon seperated so I can focus when I need to. The Fire All Phasers key, I will cover later when I explain the purposes of keybinding from a file. Usually when I am setting up my keybinds, I set it to be “B”, and then instruct my keybind file to use that keystroke)

I’m sure more than a few players feel the PUG experience is an important experience and my intent is not to marginalize those players, perhaps someone would like to pick up the torch and write a similar rating system with that in mind. A lot of this is still applicable anyway, although the less coordinated your team is the stronger Tac will seem and the less powerful Sci will appear. The truth is actually the opposite. I chose my number rankings based on my own experience in the game, and chose numbers according to “feel. Each power has been ranked on a scale of 1 (the lowest) to 10 (the highest). Scores were given based on the overall value the power has for a player functioning as part of a whole team. This last part is a critical element, if you do not play organized team scenarios some of this might not be true for you. ~ Ussultimatum

engineers The diametric opposite to the Tactical captain, the Engineer is also a “one-trick pony (self buffing mitigation) - unfortunately that trick requires people to shoot you, and nothing the Engineer has can force or convince your human opponents to do this. The reality is that the Engineer was designed as a quasi-tank for PvE with little thought given to PvP.

T

he Engineer has a suite of primarily self-only mitigation powers, and as such their role on a premade team is often questionable. They are self-reliant, and can be useful to PUG teams, but self-reliance is not particularly a requirement of premade teams due to crosshealing. The Engineer brings nothing to help score kills, and does not have any particular abilities to deny or assist on kills on allies either.

Rotate Shield Frequency RSF is a solid self-buff, with good uptime. Suffers from the same issue many ENG powers suffer from in that it is a self only buff which means the opposing team can simply switch targets (if they were ever firing at the ENG at all) or SNB it off. In addition, with current resistance levels from fleet/rep gear, etc., the amount you gain from RSF is not as useful as it appears on its face and is probably better post-SNB strip if anything. This skill is easily trumped by SNB if used too soon by the Engineer. Making this power usable on allies would turn this from an OK skill to a very good skill. TIER = LT. CD = 90S 10 POINT SCALE = 5 SELF ONLY

T

his relegates them to a low threat status, and consequently ignorable. Most premade teams will not bring an Engineer and a Science captain is almost always a better choice. This is pretty unfortunate, and should be rectified.

T

hat being said, the meta has shifted to huge spike and cloaked ships so perhaps there are some niche areas for an Engineer that the player base has yet to fully explored.

EPS Power transfer EPS has been Heavily marginalized by multiple sources of added subsystem power, and is completely negligible as a concern to the opposite team.

TIER = LTC. CD = 120S 10 POINT SCALE = 2 SELF OR 1 ALLY

49 BOOT Camp companion guide

Nadeon Inversion The benefit is decent, if not amazing. However for being a career skill this power should negate all drain, especially drain attacks. Making this power an AoE (with a lesser effect on allies perhaps) would turn this from a mediocre skill into a very good one. This is another ability that has seen its effects ported to items/consoles.

TIER = CMD CD = 180S 10 POINT SCALE = 4 SELF ONLY

Miracle Worker A significant heal that repairs downed subsystems. Healing without resistance and greater debuff cleansing makes this less powerful than it should be, falls into the same issue as RSF in that self-only means it is completely ignorable by the opposite team. Changing this from a self-only to a self or ally power, along with greater debuff cleansing and resistance added could turn this into a very good power. The new trait seems like a step in the right direction, but it still requires the opposite team to want to shoot an Engineer (who is already borderline invincible) in the first place. I’ve given this skill a rating of 6 due to the new trait. TIER = CPT. CD = 240S 10 POINT SCALE = 6 SELF ONLY

Engineering Fleet Due to cool down period, hull resistance diminishing returns, and weakness of hull tanking in comparison to shield tanking this skill is of low overall value, especially compared to other fleet skills. Still, it is a force multiplier which makes it generally better than most of the Engineer’s self-only powers. TIER = VA CD = 300S 10 POINT SCALE = 4 FORCE MULTIPLIER

science being “the one power to rule them all”. PUG teams rarely take complete advantage of the Sci captain’s full suite of powers, so Sci captains are often perceived to be weaker than they truly are and undervalued. Once your team is organized, multiple Sci captains stacking & staggering their powers creates the backbone of any good team. Sensor Scan

Science captains are often the most valuable units on a premade team, their role is both debuffing/control and team-wide mitigation. Most premade teams will bring 3 Science captains, and some might even be tempted to bring 5 Science captains if there wasn’t an unofficial agreement of “no more than 3 of any captain type”. The reason for this whether spoken or not, is because the Science captain is a force multiplier. 4 out of 5 (and arguably, all 5 of them are) of their career abilities are force multipliers, and generally speaking no selfbuffing archetype in any MMO will ever stack as well as a force multiplier. The Science captain is not a “jack of all trades”. The Science captain is the force multiplication specialist bringing to bear some of the most powerful and critical career abilities to any premade match, with Subnucleonic Beam

An AoE resistance debuff (force multiplier) that is based on Aux power, stresses one of the more important cleanse/shield heal resources (Sci Team) on multiple targets at once and also helps to counter cloaking. Has a very high uptime, and frequent use due to low cooldown.

TIER = LT. CD = 90S 10 POINT SCALE = 8 FORCE MULTIPLIER

Subnucleonic Beam The undisputed, single most powerful ability in PvP. This definition holds true in the literal sense as it can strip other Captain buffs from any target . It is the single most powerful force multiplier in the entire game through removing defense buffs and it can be used offensively to set up kills or defensively to neuter the opposing team’s damage dealers. TIER = LTC. CD = 120S 10 POINT SCALE = 10 FORCE MULTIPLIER

51 BOOT Camp companion guide

Scattering Field An AoE force multiplier (buff) based off of Aux power, tends to do Eng Fleets job better than Eng fleet. Has a good uptime and multiple Scis working in tandem can chain cast it for extended periods of coverage. Only the range keeps it from scoring higher, but with it’s solid duration AoE coverage and fire and forgetusage, it is an excellent tool in the current meta-game of decloak alpha strikes. TIER = CMD. CD = 180S 10 POINT SCALE = 7 FORCE MULTIPLIER

Photonic Fleet This is the only weak power in the Sci captain’s arsenal. It creates spam pets, and is now even spammier than previously due to the new trait. The pets are generally weak, causing a distraction or occasionally an annoying Dreadnought class ship. Probably the most useful feature is the UI or sensory overload that 3 captains rotating this can cause on the opposing team. TIER = CPT. CD = 240S 10 POINT SCALE = 3 *Special Pets, technically a force multiplier as it benefits the entire force

Science Fleet Arguably the best of the “Fleet” abilities as it provides a large, group wide shield resistance buff and can be chain cast by multiple users for extended periods of coverage. Only its long cooldown keeps it from scoring a bit higher - something all Fleet abilities have as a balancing factor. TIER = VA CD = 300S 10 POINT SCALE = 7 FORCE MULTIPLIER

tactical Attack Pattern Alpha This is the premier Tactical damage skill and one of two abilities (The other is Subnuc) that still allow teams to score kills on consistent cycles. This skill works perfectly, is powerful but is also controllable by the opposing team through a number of methods (not the least of which is SNB).

The Tactical Captain’s role on a Premade PvP team is damage dealing (duh). Without the Tactical Captain’s career abilities, it is unlikely most team’s would be able to score consistent and repeated kills in the current passive healing/resist laden environment as the window for a kill is anywhere from 10s to as low as 5s in some situations. Most premade teams will not usually bring more than 2 tactical captains. While they are important for kill scoring, they can also be a liability due to lack of mitigation powers and overall lack of force multiplication means they do not stack very well. Tac is a one trick pony, but it is an extremely good trick.

TIER = LT. CD = 90S 10 POINT SCALE = 9 SELF ONLY

Fire on My Mark What should be an excellent single target force multiplier with a 30s duration, in reality rarely if ever lasts more than 5s on any single target with the heavy prevalence of 66% percent uptime for Tac team and even worse if players use TT to cross-buff each other. That being said sometimes even a 5s window debuff is enough to assist on a kill Attack Pattern Beta is mechanically better than Fire on My Mark as it is up more frequently and applies both a buff to the user’s weapons as well as a debuff to the target. This means that even though TT can clear it, the user is still capable of re-applying it. Regardless, a well placed and timed FOMM can help turn a good attack into a quick kill. TIER = LTC. CD = 120S 10 POINT SCALE = 5 FORCE MULTIPLIER

53 BOOT Camp companion guide

Tactical Initiative Due to the prevalence of CD reduction doffs, and built in boff power redundancy in most Escorts (the Tactical captain’s most synergistic combination) this skill has little to no actual value for most escorts, with some application and use for asymmetrical spike builds or Tac station starved offense focused cruisers. TIER = CMD. CD = 180S 10 POINT SCALE = 2 TO 4 DEPENDING SELF OR ALLY

Go Down Fighting Now permanently locked to 50% hull requirement, yet also remains on a 4 minute cooldown. Usually SNB’d off and no longer available for an initial big alpha strike nor as an “as needed” boost to help score a kill that might not happen otherwise. It Still packs a large damage boost, with a trait that provides resistance - but also still very vulnerable to subnuc and now an even more attractive target. TIER = CAPT. CD = 240S 10 POINT SCALE = 6 SELF ONLY

Tactical Fleet This buff does not seem to be working correctly and is only applying a 22% bonus instead of the listed 30%. A useful ability, works as a force multiplier but is also limited due to the extreme cooldown. TIER = VA CD = 300S 10 POINT SCALE = 6 FORCE MULTIPLIER

o start things off with, here’s a nice simple, cheap to put together build for a cruiser. Chances are you’re in a cruiser, and would like to pvp in it and primarily deal damage. While that’s not its primary role, it can be done, and its a good platform for learning the ropes of pvp. This will be more of a tutorial then a serious build, but it will create a very sturdy ship that you can practice taking damage and healing in.
