Season 2017-18

DANISH NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

SEASON 2017-18

DEAR AUDIENCE Welcome to a season in which the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Fabio Luisi bring heaven and earth together in a series of magnificent musical works that grapple with the most powerful forces in human life. In the Danish National Symphony Orchestra’s new concert season we dare to

invite the public to experience some of music’s most powerful and redemptive works; music where existence itself is at stake; in which the heavens open and the sound of the orchestra is borne aloft by strong singing voices, graphic texts and spiritual drama – from Beethoven’s masterly Missa Solemnis through Bartók’s macabre erotic thriller opera Bluebeard’s Castle to James MacMillan’s new St. Luke Passion and Franz Schmidt’s grand oratorio The Book with Seven Seals. If there is one consistent theme that runs through the musical works of the season, it is the acknowledgement of love as the sustaining force of human life. In beautiful Late Romantic tone poems, great symphonies and dramatic oratorios, the composers of the season return constantly to earthly or celestial love as a redemptive power. For the musician – and for humanity in general – it is hard not to be captivated by the beauty of the message! Whether you are an experienced or a brand new concert-goer, in this season you will have rich opportunities to choose freely between well-known classics, great musical dramas and not least a number of works that the orchestra has never played before – both new and old. You can also choose to try out a whole range of concert experiences that we have put together for you in a subscription series. Perhaps you will be surprised? Welcome to a new season with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra – we hope you will join us in our journey into the music! Kim Bohr Chief Executive & Artistic Director DR Choirs & Orchestras

FABIO LUISI

“During the short period, I have been Principal Conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, I have lost my heart to the Orchestra and the Danish audiences.”

Credit: Jeppe Carlsen / Balu Photography

Here in Copenhagen I have encountered a quite special openness, trust and equality among the musicians that is very rare – and which I associate with a special Nordic mentality. The Danish National Symphony Orchestra is not only a phenomenally good symphony orchestra; it is also a fantastic grouping of living personalities, each of whom offers his or her take on the music. This gives me, as a conductor – and as a human being – the very best conditions for working freely, concentratedly and quite uncompromisingly in the service of the music without having to struggle with either personal reservations or burdensome hierarchies and traditions. The same openness that I experience from the musicians, I also sense from the Danish audiences. There is a uniquely warm atmosphere in DR Koncerthuset, which the Orchestra and I can clearly feel on the stage. The regular concertgoers and the new faces alike allow themselves to be captivated by both the familiar and the entirely unknown – and that means everything to us who create the music! I am truly looking forward to the new season at DR Koncerthuset, where the Orchestra and I will together present to the public several of the truly great musical masterpieces – and will do our utmost to reach the hearts of the audience and unlock the innermost essence of the music. Danish National Vocal Ensemble Danish National Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Marcus Creed Soloists: Christina Landshamer, Wiebke Lemkuhl, Benjamin Hulett, André Morsch Bach: Christmas Oratorio, parts 1-3

Two sides of Scandinavia’s most popular composer, Edvard Grieg: first, his tempestuous Piano Concerto and then the Norwegian miniatures which make up his Lyric Suite for Orchestra. Richard Strauss’ ingenious Tod und Verklärung is a symphonic poem about the transition from life to death.

The Danish National Vocal Ensemble and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra launch the Christmas season with the first three parts of Bach’s great Christmas Oratorio. Bach wrote the music to be performed over the Christmas period, so the music follows the narrative of the Nativity Gospel. The last three parts of the Oratorio will be performed at the concerts in January.
