itting in a seminar room is not what’s going to make you successful. Of course at 125 pages I was probably one the ‘best note takers’ in the room, but that’s not the point – ALL 12 people who stood up took DOZENS of pages of notes or MindMapped the event. I know because we ‘compared notes’ during and AFTER the event. The other participants were just happy to ‘take it all in and enjoy the event.’ Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the event – that’s not why I attended. I was there for ONE primary reason – to make more money. Enjoying the process was just a bonus.

MY PERSONAL JOURNEY Success is one of those things that for many, is hard to define, quantify or label. While we each have our own interpretation and perspective, for me and my business coaching and mentoring clients, success is about living one’s ‘purpose’. I define my mission in life as continuing to live my dream, empowering others to discover and live theirs. I originally played squash as a time-efficient way to maintain physical fitness. Winning the first tournament I competed in was the catalyst to developing a competitive career as a mature athlete. It was also convenient as another example of exponential mindset strategies in action – in a nonbusiness environment, with the unique twist of mental toughness to overcome adversity and perform at peak performance. Hitting my first squash ball at age 37 with only 5 years of playing experience and less than a total of 10 tournaments under my belt, on my blog, I chronicled how I reached the top ranks of masters squash within 3 years. The foundational principles of deliberate practice, peak performance preparation and mindful mental self-awareness reveal the building blocks of athletic success with parallels and analogies in other dimensions of life. One of my guiding principles of success is the holistic approach to achieving excellence in all 4 dimensions of mastery – business, the Internet, professional and personal. Achieving work-life balance without compromising results and achievements is something that eludes most people. My squash ‘career’ in large part was developed to prove you ‘can have it all’ as well as demonstrate that this approach and mindset can be replicated across other dimensions. Joining the Professional Squash Association on my 49th birthday, as the oldest player on the tour was a life-defining moment. It was both scary and exciting to step into the realm of professional sports even though my expectations and intentions differed from the juniors who dream of reaching the top 10 or becoming world #1. I did it to determine where my ultimate all-time peak performance was just as much as it was to have fun and explore new insights, distinctions and revelations about who I really am and what I am capable of. I am on my journey, having the time of my life, creating one breakthrough after another – what

DELIBERATE PRACTICE PRINCIPLES FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE RESULTS Even though Deliberate Practice Principles have their origins in peak performance sports psychology, they have been explored and chronicled in all areas of human endeavor and achievement including music, languages, and even air travel safety (National Transportation Safety Board - NTSB). Admittedly, creating champions is not easy, in large part because of the relentless debate about nature versus nature and the influence of genetics and inheritance of ‘so-called’ talent. The jury is in and there is no such thing as talent, once you take genetics out of the equation.

Mathematically, genetics (height, proportions, physical and intellectual abilities, etc.) only account for 35% or 1/3rd of results. That leaves more than 2/3rd for hard work, discipline, perseverance, grit, tenacity, desire and determination. It is not as easy to be a champion in business because the OUTCOMES can be so varied and difficult to measure and quantify. This is especially true when looking for an outcome that includes “flourishing” instead of just “making more money”. We have all heard we should “work smart, not hard” – but what does that actually mean? Simply put – it means using Deliberate Practice Principles.

INTERNET MASTERY: Generating New Leads The noughties were infamous for the Internet Marketing revolution that turned business models inside-out “disintermediating” inefficient industries and inventing brand new ones. For most small businesses, however, it wasn’t revolutionary. In fact, for most, it was just another task, responsibility and additional hurdle to overcome to get new leads in the door. Moreover, what was once easy – getting a listing in the Yellow Pages - became a quagmire of three letter acronyms (SEO, PPC, CTR, LPO, etc.) To top it all off, business owners were bombarded with unscrupulous web (and social media) specialists who claimed to have all the answers.
