VENUE: RYDGES HOTEL, FORTITUDE VALLEY (ADJACENT TO THE EKKA SHOWGROUNDS). The half day conference, themed ‘Advancing the Breed’ will be facilitated by Jon Condon, Beef Central, and include presentations from industry leaders such as David Connolly (President NTCA), Jason Strong (MLA), David Johnston (AGBU), Blair Angus (Signature Beef), Mick Hewitt (Hewitt Cattle Co), Duncan Brown (Brisbane Valley Protein), Charlie Hawkins (Hebertvale & Malakoff Downs). Entry is free of charge. 60th Anniversary Dinner 5:30 - 10:30pm VENUE: VICTORIA PARK GOLF CLUB, HERSTON (approximately 2km from Brisbane Showgrounds). Parking is available onsite. This is the feature event for the Society’s 60th Anniversary year. The evening will be a celebration of all things Droughtmaster - where Droughtmaster friends and associates - past, present and future - can come together to commemorate the rich history of the Society and the breed that is Australia’s natural wonder. Guest speakers will share stories of the people and milestones that have made the breed what it is today. There will be an exclusive video presentation featuring footage from the archives, as well as live entertainment. Ticket price includes a three-course meal and beverages. The dress code is cocktail. The Droughtmaster Futurity was initiated in 1986. The Event was the brainchild of Droughtmaster visionaries, Val and the late Neil Evans (Balcara Stud), Margaret and the late Peter Wilson (Truvalle Stud), and Ray and Desley Phillips (Sunny View Stud) to provide an opportunity for Droughtmaster breeders to showcase their young bulls and females, and to develop the skills of young members in the art of handling and preparing show cattle.
The Futurity is held annually at the Gatton Showgrounds and has been a valuable foundation for countless Droughtmaster members who have gone on to further their skills in the showring as exhibitors and judges.
In honour their dedicated and enduring commitment to the education of our youth and the advancement of the Droughtmaster breed, the Society has introduced three perpetual awards in their names. The awards will be presented this year at the Droughtmaster Feature Event and thereafter, at the annual Droughtmaster Futurity.
VAL AND NEIL EVANS YOUTH EXCELLENCE AWARD The Val and Neil Evans Youth Excellence Award is presented to a competitor who competes in both the Junior Judges’ competition and the Junior Parader competition and displays excellence in their performance across both events.
RAY AND DESLEY PHILLIPS YOUTH ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD The Ray and Desley Phillips Youth Encouragement Award is presented to a competitor who competes in both the Junior Judges’ competition and the Junior Parader competition and displays enthusiasm, passion and skill that is worthy of recognition.
TRUVALLE JUNIOR HERDSMAN AWARD The Truvalle Junior Herdsman Award is presented to the junior exhibitor who displays a strong work ethic and dedication to the welfare of their animals, and who has worked tirelessly and to the best of their ability to prepare their cattle for exhibition.
SCHOOL COMPETITION To mark our 60th Anniversary, and to recognise the invaluable opportunities that schools provide to students, many of whom are not from cattle backgrounds, the Society has introduced a school competition.
The Most Successful School Award is awarded to the school with the most points accumulated across areas including the performance in Parader classes, Junior Judges’ competition, placings in the general competition, herdsmanship, sportsmanship in the ring, student presentation, punctuality, attentiveness as well as knowledge of their school and the animals that they are showing.

Judge Grame Hopf Described as “one of Australia’s most esteemed judges”, Grame Hopf has adjudicated at multiple events, both on home soil and overseas. At home, he has judged at the Royal Show in every Australian State and Territory, Beef Australia, and at countless Agricultural Shows and Breed Feature Shows. Beyond our shores, Mr Hoft has judged in 14 countries world-wide, and has officiated at the World Congress on no fewer than four occasions, a record that is yet to be surpassed. Mr Hopf judged Droughtmaster cattle at National Beef Show Rockhampton,
Mr Hopf’s judging finesse is not limited to beef cattle. He is also a world-renowned judge of dairy cattle, sheep, horses, and poultry.
When he is not judging, Mr Hopf is active on the education and tutorial circuit, and has tutored at countless beef and dairy youth camps and judge training schools. He is passionate about youth and agriculture and is actively involved in the promotion and education of youth in both the areas of livestock management and judging.
Marty Rowlands established KBV Simmental & Simbrah Stud in 2002. Driven by his passion for Simmental cattle and his desire to be at the forefront of the stud game, his goal is not only to raise Simmental cattle, but also to produce and market superior genetics that breeders from around the world would seek to acquire.
Currently he sits on a number of industry boards and committees including Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association, Qld Branch of Simmental Australia and Beef Australia.
Employed by Phibro Animal Health Corporation as the Beef Business Unit Manager he has indepth knowledge of nutrition and the feedlot sector where his role allows him to travel the globe interacting with corporate feedlots, beef businesses and integrated supply chains.
Marty has presented to industry in San Antonio Texas, Guadalajara Mexico and Pretoria South Africa he has judged State and National Finals for Paraders and Young Judges Competitions, and has officiated Brangus and Limousin feature Shows, Beef Australia 2018, Beef Australia 2021 The Royal Queensland Show and numerous local shows and youth events.
Marty is honored to have been nominated to adjudicate at the Droughtmaster Feature Event 2022.
Associate Judge Isaac Day A secondary school student from Kilkivan in Southern Queensland, Isaac Day has always had a passion for cattle and agriculture. At school, Isaac is an active member of the Cattle Team and thoroughly enjoys the opportunity to compete with his fellow team members in Young Judges’ competitions (stud cattle and prime cattle) at local Agricultural shows, and at the Gympie Carcass Classic.
In addition to his involvement in school-based cattle activities, Isaac has attended a number of junior cattle camps where he was awarded the Champion Stud Judge (2021 Brangus Youth Camp), and the Sportsmanship Award (2021 Toogoolawah Junior Cattle Camp).
Isaac’s family run a commercial cattle business with a Droughtmaster base herd. Away from school, Isaac is actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the business, and he and his younger brother have started selecting steers from the family herd to prepare them for led steer competitions in local shows.
