REPORTS
PRESIDENT’S REPORT This time last year our members in some areas were recovering from devastating floods, whilst others were being hit hard by drought and bushfire. Little did we know the contrasts that 2020 would provide - from the threat of COVID to bumper sale results. The COVID 19 experience for some of us hasn’t meant much change at all, whilst others have been restricted from visiting friends and family, having their children not return home for the holidays, or seen their working lives impacted. Whilst significant travel restrictions were in place, the Board made many representations to government and industry stakeholders, advocating for a practical, pragmatic option for cross border movement for agricultural producers during the bull selling season. Thousands of stud bulls are bought and sold during the national bull selling season – each year these bulls represent significant investments in the genetic future and competitive advantage of the $18.5 billion Australian red meat industry. The collective effort of ourselves and other industry advocates resulted in more open cross border movement for agricultural producers. We can only hope that the COVID situation remains positive and that common sense continues to prevail. For the Board, COVID forced the issue with respect to electronic meetings. It has tested the bandwidth for some of our more remote Board members and required an even earlier rise than usual for our Western Zone Director, Clint Gartrell, however, it has also resulted in some savings for the Society. There is no substitute for meeting with some of our important stakeholders face to face, however, the Board still intends to embed some of the savings and benefits of electronic meetings into our practices moving forward. With respect to moving forward, the Board recently reviewed the Society’s achievements against its Strategic Plan - the Road Ahead. It’s fair to say that we have some miles behind us, but we still have plenty of work to do. From amongst the achievements of the last 12 months and promotional activities planned on The Road Ahead, I would like to acknowledge two.
Todd Heyman | President
The first is a nod to a few of our Corporate Partnerships - Ariat Australia / Just Country Australia, Australian Community Media and Morgans Financial Services. Ariat is the leading provider of Western and Equestrian footwear and apparel around the world. We feel that Ariat Australia and Just Country Australia are a great fit for our breed and its members, sharing lots of common values and goals – and we look forward to the next three years with them.

REPORTS
… President’s Report continued be familiar with, continues to provide a great deal of support to the breed - for which we are extremely grateful. In the current year ACM has provided the Society a significant amount of free advertising space, which has been used to date on breed promotion. Thank you once again, ACM!

Morgans specialises in stockbroking, wealth management and corporate financial advice. Morgans is Australia’s largest national full-service stockbroking and wealth management network operating from off ices in all states and territories. We would like to thank Morgans for their support in 2020 and look forward to partnering with them into the future.
The commitments that these sponsors have shown the breed and Society are truly appreciated in the current environment. We thank them for their continued support and I hope that you will continue to support these Corporate Partners as they support us. The second is to highlight some significant upcoming breed promotional activities.
2021 - The Droughtmaster Beef 2021 Committee • Beef plans to lift the Society’s promotional presence at Beef Week to another level. a preliminary viewing of the recently developed “Our Story” breed promotional video. This video, which has been off icially launched by the Society, is one part of the Society’s growing promotional toolkit aimed at building recognition of the breed and brand throughout the entire supply chain. I encourage our readers to look out for “Our Story” and share it broadly.
As the 2020 bull selling season closes, it is worth reflecting on sales results, which have been excellent, for both private and Society Sponsored Sale vendors. The Society has distributed post sales reports, which break down results in a number of areas for the benefit of vendors and members. On behalf of the Board I would like to congratulate the vendors on their results - they are a credit to you all. In closing, the Board is aware that some of our members Pantone 382PC continue to experience persistent dry conditions at the time of Pantone writing. 582PC For those who continue to endure Pantone this frustration, our 138PC thoughts are with you and we hope that the situation for you changes very soon. REPORTS
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT We are now through the 2020 bull sale season and there have been some exceptional results at both private and Society Sponsored Sales. I would like to congratulate all the vendors on their results. To have five bulls sell in excess of $100k is a fantastic advertisement for the breed. Over the past couple of months, the off ice has been heavily involved in the organisation of the Society Sponsored Bull Sales. Both sales achieved very solid results. The National Bull Sale delivered some record results with the top price bull selling for $160,000 and the sale averaging $10,990. There were 427 bulls offered for a clearance of 91% and 144 bulls sold for in excess of $10,000. The Roma Bull Sale was also very strong with a top priced bull of $36,000, averaging $8,045 and with a clearance of 95% from 88 bulls sold.
Simon Gleeson | General Manager
The Society has recently finalised a new promotional video which we are calling “Our Story” and demonstrates the benefits and quality of the breed across the supply chain. At the time of writing this report we are preparing for an upcoming launch of the video, which will be communicated through various media channels nationwide to maximise exposure of the breed. The timing for this launch provides an ideal opportunity to remind beef producers of the benefits and the quality of this breed, particularly after coming off one of the worst droughts in history and now with a rebuild of the national herd (at an all-time low) - a result of both the recent drought and the devasting floods in North Queensland in February 2019. We hope that off the back of this promotion it will drive membership and inventory growth in the breed and create positive awareness of Droughtmaster beef in the marketplace. We continually track to the commitments made in the Strategic Plan, “The Road Ahead” which was endorsed by the Board in November 2019 and at the October 2020 Board meeting I provided the Board with a comprehensive annual update on what has been achieved during that time. For those who are not familiar with the Strategic Plan I would encourage you to visit the website where it is easily accessible. Finally, I would like to thank the team in the off ice for all their hard work this year. It has been extremely challenging with COVID-19 and with several new initiatives that we have been involved in to rebuild some of the foundations of the Society. I would also like to thank the members for their patience during the year and I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

NSW:
OPPORTUNITIES APLENTY By Kate Dodd
Droughtmaster Australia President and Far Southern Zone Director, Todd Heyman said the southern cattle market had seen “almost unprecedented” confidence and prices, with breeders rewarded to some extent for their perseverance during the ongoing drought. Todd pointed to the Eastern States Paddock Feeder Steer and Heifer Indicators, that, according to Meat and Livestock Australia, reached record highs in late October, up 41 percent and 35 percent on year-ago levels to average 424c/kg live weight and 400c/kg live weight respectively. That confidence, as well as a change in expected seasonal conditions coupled with a big area that needs to rebuild its herd, provide the Droughtmaster breed with an environment ripe with opportunity, he said. Weather wise, whilst there were still areas of dry, there had been extremely promising falls of rain in the lead up to summer, and the outlook for the southern states in the coming months is for a wetter summer.
8
“This would be a welcome change compared to the last few years where many of our members were hand feeding and watering cattle,” he said. “As many would appreciate, these conditions may also flow through into more favourable feed prices in the coming months.” Todd said herds in New South Wales and Victoria were decreased during the drought, with MLA statistics showing NSW down four million (-14%), with areas such as the Northern Tablelands (down 31%), the Western area that incorporates the Lower Murray Darling (down 33%) and the North Coast area (down 24%) looking to rebuild. He said now was an excellent opportunity to point to the Droughtmaster’s traits and benefits that give them a reputation as a wonderful “all rounder” to help rebuild those herds. Those traits and benefits, Todd said, included parasite and disease resistance (making them “low touch” and economical to manage, as well as giving them a significant advantage over the handling, vaccinating and supplementing requirements of some other breeds) and their temperament and docility.
Todd, who has fielded a number of recent enquiries from potential buyers, said he had seen enquiries from growth areas like the Macleay Valley (Kempsey), Nambucca Valley, New England, Central Coast and even in Western Sydney. “It’s great to see enquiry from these areas where there is significant opportunity for future growth,” he said. “These areas have traditionally been dominated by the Bos taurus breeds.” Todd said the coronavirus had interrupted the program of events for the Far Southern Zone in 2020 - one such event was Gunnedah’s AqQuip 2020. “This usually provides members and Droughtmaster breeders with an excellent opportunity to catch up, compare notes and share jokes,” he said. But it seems the cattle community are looking forward to next year’s event, which Todd said would be huge. A WORD FROM
THE WEST:
Photo: Stacey Ford Photography
By Kate Dodd It has been an “absolute cracker” of a year in Western Australia for Droughtmasters. In fact, it’s the best it’s been in the south west for five years, says Western Zone Director Clint Gartrell. Clint said that 2020’s success came down to the fact that the rain has come at the right time and there is ample hay to keep stock fed. He said after the first major shock of the coronavirus earlier in the year, it had prett y much returned to normal. “We’ve been extremely lucky here,” he said. Historically, he said WA producers raised cattle like Angus, Charolais, Santa Gertrudis and Brahmans, Droughtmasters were growing in popularity in areas like the
10
Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne and Murchison, despite the British breed turning some heads. While he said breeds like the Santa Gertrudis and Brahmans would always be up in northern environments in the long run, Droughtmasters versatility and adaptability made them a great addition. That growing popularity, he said, was because of the breed’s versatility and adaptability. “We’ve been happy with cross breeding; the girls have had no problems at all, even if they’ve mated with a large European bull, they’ve had no issues with larger calves,” he said. As well as their adaptability with crossbreeding, Clint said Droughtmasters had also proven that they could live in
the state’s varying weather conditions without issue. Clint, who previously worked as an agent for Elders, said WA relied heavily on the export market, exporting to places like Israel and Vietnam. “The export markets are still going very strong,” he said. “They don’t seem to have a problem with the Droughties as long as they are red, have a slick coat and pink nose.” As for his hopes for 2021, Clint said northern producers have had a good season and believed that would come down to the south. “If they have a good season up there it tends to have a good effect on the southern market, I still see WA as the north breeds and the south fattens,” he said.

with the times and abreast of the breed and it’s genotypes and phenotypes, Ed and Carol regularly attend the Droughtmaster National Sale and other breed events. Another innovation that the couple and their prefix have been involved in has been BREEDPLAN. Clonlara and it’s founders were foundation members of Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN and are still great advocates and firm believers in the need for objective measurement of cattle. Nowadays, the Clonlara operation is owned and operated by their son, Gus, his wife, Jen, and their three boys. All of Ed and Carol’s children work and are involved in the rural industry. Their other children, Clare Mailler and Charlie are both veterinarians with Clare operating her own prefix, the Coolibah Stud, Boggabilla, New South Wales.
Ed and Carol McCormack Being an inspiration, an innovator and a leader in your field often goes unnoticed and many don’t seek the limelight. Ed and Carol McCormack are two of those people. The couple founded their Clonlara Droughtmaster prefix on Dilga, Glenmorgan in 1969. It’s from there that the couple worked quietly and tirelessly, all the time honing their cattle and their herd to an extent that the name Clonlara has become a household one within and outside the Droughtmaster breed. For a lot of the time this couple have let their cattle do the talking. The Clonlara Droughtmaster is of such a high standard that its name appears on championship boards and award lists in both the commercial and seedstock arenas. Over many years the Clonara cattle have always been a force to be reckoned with at competition level, winning numerous awards and in the process taking the Droughtmaster brand and breed to the world. Clonlara under their stewardship has enjoyed many great successes in both feedlot and feedback trials and prime cattle competitions, most notably taking out the Grand Champion Pen of Steers at the Brisbane Royal Show and Beef 1991.
12
Clonlara’s success has not been limited to the commercial sector. The prefix has exhibited their seedstock product at Regional, Feature and Royal Show level with their crowning acheivement, the Grand Champion Bull at the Brisbane Royal in 2010. In recognition of this Ed has adjudicated and judged cattle at a Regional, Feature and Royal Show level, having judged Droughtmasters at two Brisbane Royals, in 1984 and 1989. Ed and Carol were also innovators when it came to the marketing of their product. They commenced offering their own cattle at their Annual On Property Bull Sale in 1989 and this tradition has continued in September ever since. Before this ground breaking move, these forward thinkers were the first breeders to sell two year old bulls in what was then the Rockhampton Droughtmaster Sale, the forerunner of the Droughtmaster National Sale. This was in those days a very bold move, given that most of the offering were rising three year old bulls or even older. The couple undertook this groundbreaking move in the early 1980’s. Nowadays these age categories are considered the norm. In keeping
The history and the breeding of Droughtmasters runs deep within Ed and Carol’s veins. Carol is the daughter of foundation breeder and Life Member, the late John StewartMoore. John founded the hallmark and historic herds, Charraboon Stud, Toogoolawah and Telemon Stud, Hughenden. The latter is still held and operated by the family through Jack and Kylie StewartMoore. John Stewart-Moore was also instrumental in the forming of the Droughtmaster Society, together with the late breeders and Life Members, Monty Atkinson, Bob Rea and Audrey Perry. The foundations of the Clonlara herd were laid in 1969 with 30 head of Droughtmaster cattle gifted to the young couple by John StewartMoore, as payment for allowing him to agist cattle there during the drought on the 4045 hectare block which the couple had just recently drawn and named Clonlara. The Life Membership was given in honour, recognition and acknowledgement for Ed and Carol’s contribution toward both the Droughtmaster Society and breed. A small ceremony was conducted at the 2020 Droughtmaster National Sale where Life Membership was bestowed on the couple. Commenting on the award the couple said, “We both feel honoured. There is great satisfaction seeing the recognition the breed has in the wider commercial industry, particularly through these dry years. It’s been a great ride.”

NOLAN MEATS:
VALUE ADDING THROUGHOUT THE BEEF CHAIN By Kate Dodd Australia is currently in a unique position enjoying the highest livestock prices anywhere in the world and it’s the first time in Nolan Meats director Terry Nolan’s life he can remember that happening. Whilst he said he doesn’t expect this booming situation - a result of a drought diminished herd and normal supply and demand unrelated to the pandemic - to continue in the long term, he expects these positive returns for beef producers to hold for some time into the future. However it will equilibrate eventually, he said. Nolan Meats started as a family business in 1958, building up a reputation as a successful local wholesaler and now International exporter, which is run by brothers Michael and Tony along with Terry. “We’ve tried to steer our business in a direction that’s ‘consumer led’ and embraces a lot of innovative, modern technologies,” Terry said. Nolan Meats premium brand of beef is Private Selection - which Terry says contains a lot of Droughtmaster and their crosses within that brand. He said the best thing about Droughtmasters was its environmental adaptability. “We are great believers in breeding cattle that suit the environment you’re in, and we are in a subtropical zone,” he said. While he said there is a large market for marbled beef internationally, Terry said it wasn’t something that Nolan Meats embraced, preferring to be “kinder to the planet” by having faster growing, younger, shorter fed cattle that would deliver a healthier alternative to the Australian public. “We can’t see the benefit in feeding cattle for 300 or 400 days grain to produce heavily marbled beef in an older animal, sure there is a price premium, but at what cost to a sustainable industry? It doesn’t make sense to waste resources,” he said. Terry said the coronavirus hadn’t destroyed any demand for beef - either at home or internationally - and he had seen unprecedented demand peaks in the retail butcher and supermarket sectors. “It’s transferred from time-poor people dining out to homebound people seeking comfort in a beautifully prepared beef meal at home,” he said. “It’s certainly changed the market but by all reports people are still eager to source great quality beef.”

TECHNICAL UPDATE
NEW TRAITS ADDED TO THE DROUGHTMASTER BREEDPLAN Good news for Droughtmaster Breeders with introduction of four new traits into the Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN analysis earlier this year. The new traits are Gestation Length, Days to Calving, Shear Force and Flight Time. This has been possible by the introduction of the data from the Northern Research Projects (Repronomics and Northern BIN) into Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN analysis. Below is a description of the new traits and how to submit data into Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN Gestation Length EBV’s allow • breeders to identify those
bulls whose calves will be born earlier though AI, giving the cow a longer period to get back in calf. Gestation Length EBVs provide an estimate of genetic differences between the period from the date of conception (i.e. when the cow gets in calf) to when the subsequent calf is born. Gestation Length EBVs are calculated from both the joining date and date of birth records for calves conceived by either AI or Hand Mating. Gestation length information should be
16
submitted to Droughtmaster Australia when submitting your calf registration details.
to Calving EBV’s allow • Days breeders to identify bulls whose
daughters get in calf early when the bulls go into mating. EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in the time from the start of the joining period under natural mating until subsequent calving. Days to Calving EBVs are expressed in days, with a more negative EBV being more favourable. A shorter time from the start of mating to calving is mostly indicative of a shorter time to conception. These EBVs are calculated from the natural joining records submitted for both heifers and mature cows. Joining records should be sent to Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN to be included in the Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN analysis.
Force EBV’s allow breeders • Shear to identify bulls whose progeny will have meat that is tenderer to eat. EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in meat tenderness.
Shear force is measured in the kilograms of shear force that are required to pull a mechanical blade through a piece of cooked meat and are based upon direct carcase measurements. Shear force EBVs are expressed in kg and lower (more negative) are predicative of lower shear force i.e. more tender meat. Data for Shear Force is being collected in the Northern BIN project. Time EBV’s allow breeders • Flight to identify bulls whose progeny
will have better temperament. Flight Time EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in temperament. Flight time is the time taken (in seconds) for an animal to travel approximately 2.0 metres after leaving the crush. Flight Time EBVs are expressed in seconds and higher EBVs (i.e. more positive) are predictive of longer flight times (i.e. better temperament). Flight Time records should be sent to Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN to be included in the Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN analysis.

2020 INTERNATIONAL RURAL WOMEN’S DAY Cross Beef Breeders’ Association formed in 1952. Its name was changed to the Australian Tropical Beef Breeders’ Association in 1956, eventually becoming the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders’ Society at the AGM in Townsville on 3 July 1962. Membership had risen from 7 to 100 and registrations had grown to 8000.

TECHNICAL UPDATE
UNRAVELLING THE SCIENCE
ET AND IVF By Vetoquinol Australia
Bovine Artificial Reproductive Technologies have been commercialised for many years now, allowing practitioners and producers to improve the reproductive performance, eff iciency and genetic gain within cow herds. The goals of embryo transfer (ET) are for a donor cow to present at the end of a 17day protocol with two uterine horns full of fertilised, quality embryos, ready to be flushed. The goal for an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) donor cow is to present with ovaries that have many mid-sized competent follicles, ready to be aspirated by ultrasound. The core difference is, fertilisation and early embryo development occurs in the cow in ET. In IVF, this occurs in the laboratory. Both ET and IVF produce 7-day embryos for transfer or freezing.
device insertion to terminate any current wave dominant follicles. 3. Twice daily follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) injections are started at follicular wave emergence, to support all recruited follicles to mature and all become dominant, ovulatory follicles.
In the IVF program, immature oocytes are collected directly from the ovary via ultrasound guided aspiration, a technique called ovum pick-up (OPU), from immature follicles. Protocols within a laboratory support the oocytes maturation to fertilisation and embryonic development to the 7-day, blastocyst threshold. Generally, 20% to 40% of oocytes recovered will reach blastocyst stage for transfer or cryopreservation. IVF does not require manipulation of the oestrus cycle. Harvested oocytes rely on laboratory maturation In the ET protocol, the oestrus cycle for competency, more recently is manipulated. 1. A Cue-Mate® hormone stimulation protocols progesterone device is inserted similar to ET protocols allow for to mimic the effect of the Luteal partial maturation of the oocyte in Phase on the current follicular wave. the cow, improving the outcomes 2. Oestradiol is injected soon after for IVF programs. There is a breed variation in ET PROGRAM IVF PROGRAM IVF response with Bos indicus consistently yielding higher than their crosses. Tropically adapted, Bos taurus and Holsteins by contrast have lower oocyte and transferable blastocyst yields. (Vetoquinol htt ps://www.repro360.com. au/reproductivetechnologies/et)
(Simplot htt p://www.simplot. com/animalsciences/ in_vitro_fertilization)
Considering the science behind manipulating the oestrous cycle
and recent advances in both ET and IVF protocols, a practitioner and producer find themselves with a choice between ET and IVF. IVF should not be considered the solution to more pregnancies, less cost and less stress, or a remedy to the more involved ET program. There are however, situations and particular donor cows or groups, considered more suited to an IVF.

to super-ovulatory stimulation. Pregnant donor cows up to 3 months in calf are suitable for IVF programs, however they cannot be hormone stimulated. Pre pubertal heifers in order to shorten generation interval and drive genomic selection. Achieving genetic diversity by submitting one donor cow to sperm from multiple sires. Commercially this requires a minimum number of oocytes for fertilisation by each sire. Conversely and when semen is in short supply or very valuable, multiple donor cows can be fertilised by a single dose of sperm. Commercially there are limitations if the semen is not of the highest quality.

Innovative marketing exposes Kimberley cattle to red hot eastern states young cattle market Jon Condon – Beef Central Having the right cattle, in the right location, at the right time in the market cycle has seen a Kimberley (WA) cattle station pull off an extraordinary sale result for 2100 young cattle offered on AuctionsPlus during the October sale. Exploiting the fever-pitch eastern states market for backgrounder and restocker cattle at present, Hancock Prospecting’s Fossil Downs Station offered 1600 Droughtmaster backgrounder steers and 500-odd heifer sisters during the October sale. The listings carried a highly unusual sale feature: the vendor paid full freight from their home base near Fitzroy Crossing in WA, to the southern Queensland selling centre of Roma (or equivalent). This move effectively exposed the Fossil Downs cattle to a far larger potential buyer audience, in the midst of unprecedented demand for quality young cattle across eastern Australia. Yard records have been set for young cattle across eastern states in recent weeks, and the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (a combination of yearling and vealer steer and heifer prices from saleyards across eastern states) yesterday reached 787.5c/kg, just short of the 793c/kg record high set earlier this month. The 1600 Droughtmaster backgrounder steers and 500 heifers offered by Fossil Downs during the October 2020 sale, set all-time records for sale cattle based out of the Kimberley region – even with the large freight component deducted.
20
The steer portion was aged 6-12 months, with the lighter end averaged 155kg selling to a phenomenal 642c/kg liveweight, while the heavier steers 230kg made 575c. Another key attraction to store buyers starved of numbers at present was the sheer scale of the offering of one-brand cattle. The steer portion went three ways, all destined to enter feedlot programs after backgrounding. One heavier line went to a backgrounder in southern Queensland who is aligned with a large grainfed operation; a second line went to a feedlot backgrounder buyer in the Hunter Valley region of NSW; and the third went to a backgrounder buyer in the Riverina region of southern NSW. The 500 Droughtmaster heifers offered, aged 7-16 months, saw the heavier end averaging 200kg make 536c/kg, while the lighter 155kg heifers made 547c, with both lots heading to backgrounders in WA’s southern region. Again, both prices were easily all-time records for Kimberley-bred heifers. This is not the first Kimberley consignment that marketing agent Northern Rural Supplies has offered with the freight incentive this year, however, with three earlier offerings completed – but this sale was easily the largest. Prior to 2020, however, the ‘freight-offset’ strategy has never been attempted, but the surge in young cattle values in the east this year has been the catalyst. Normally, Fossil Downs would hold these steers and heifers to heavier weights and sell into the live export market in a year’s time, but the decision was made by the vendor to capitalise on the
current grass fever in the eastern states for young cattle. The sale had ‘absolutely annihilated’ the reserve placed on the cattle prior to the sale, Beef Central was told. In effect, the steer portion has probably made more $/head value than if they had been held an extra season and sold onto boats in 2021, at perhaps 100kg heavier in weight. As a comparison, Indonesian boat steers above 300kg in the Kimberley currently are making around 350-355c/kg.
Breed factor Another important factor at this historic sale was breed type, and Fossil Downs’ reputation for cattle handling. It is fair to say that higher content Brahman cattle, typical of the Kimberley region, would not have attracted the same south east, eastern states restocker support. All the Fossil Downs sale cattle were straight Droughtmaster breeding, using high-priced bulls from some of the most prominent Droughtmaster studs in Queensland, including Glenlands, Valera Vale, Piggott s, SC, Lynsey Park, Barlyne and Munda Reds. Most of the offering were 50pc to five-eighth Bos Indicus, with a good percentage described as flatbacks. The quality of the yarding is clearly evident in AuctionsPlus assessor, Todd Walsh’s photo published above. “The beauty of Droughtmaster cattle up here is that they have enough content to go onto a boat, or can go back into the feeder/backgrounder market like these Fossil Downs steers and heifers have,” Andrew Stewart from Northern Rural Supplies in Broome said.

THE END OF AN ERA
On Saturday 28 November, Margaret Wilson presented the last of the stud herd from Truvalle at the annual Cream of the Crop Sale at Coolabunia in SE Qld. Stud #22, Truvalle Stud was established in the early days of the Droughtmaster breed and ever since, Truvalle bulls and females have earned a reputation second to none in the beef cattle and seedstock industry. Margaret Wilson's name has been synonymous with Droughtmaster for many decades. Not only is Margaret passionate about her cattle, she has also worked tirelessly for the breed. Margaret has held many roles during her time, including Board Director representing the Southern Zone and steward at the Droughtmaster Futurity held annually in Gatton, a position which she still enjoys doing to this day. One of Margaret's greatest contributions is as Shed Captain at the Ekka. Even though she had ceased to show cattle herself, Margaret has continued in the role organising the shed for exhibitors at the Ekka. In 2012, a special presentation was made to Margaret by Society President, Rob Atkinson, to mark 25 years as Shed Captain (see photo). A more detailed article on Margaret Wilson and Truvalle Stud will be published in the February 2021 edition of the Droughtmaster Magazine.

FEATURE
THE BULL THEY CALLED
WHISKEY By Kent Ward
He has the best weight for age in the draft. He was the first son of a ‘first release sire’ to be sold. His dam is the most impressive cow in the herd. There was a great deal of pre sale hype and a lot riding on the 21-month old bull called Whiskey. Behind every picture and story there’s always another picture and another story. The Rondel Stud 100 kilometres north of Winton and some 125 kilometres south of Hughenden has experienced, like nearly all of us, the good and bad times. Behind the scenes there are stories
26
and pictures that make the bull they named ‘Whiskey’ and his namesake all that more special.
Established in 1987 by Peter and Deleece Carrington, the Rondel Stud is run on Anrod and Koondi Stations, on the famed black soil open downs country of central western Queensland. These second generation Droughtmaster breeders, along with their extended family, like so many others are still battling drought and its ongoing crippling and ripple effects. Luke Carrington and wife, Jayna along with Zach and Lakisha (Carrington) are also weathering the ongoing and debilitating effects of the drought aiding and supporting, Peter and Deleece. As Peter Carrington said, “We’re hanging in there trying to save our stud nucleus. It’s important
that we strive to keep the herd functional, there’s over 40 years of breeding here, the main aim is to keep breeding quality over quantity. That’s why it was such a rewarding result for us all with the sale of Whiskey, it makes you go a little harder, dig that little bit deeper, to continue improving and producing top quality stock.” Peter expanded on those thoughts saying, “It’s hard to describe just how hard the drought has hit us and others as individuals, but it’s been so widespread and gone on for so long that it’s had a huge impact on the beef industry as a whole. However, it’s been very rewarding as our genetics have been sought after, demand for our genetics has remained strong with consistent paddock sales. We’ve always been very tough on our selection for performance

FEATURE and fertility, due to the drought we’ve reduced our numbers, as a result we offloaded females that we would have normally been retained, we’ve seen a 30 percent reduction in our numbers.” The Carrington’s have had cattle on agistment or on the road for the past seven years. In a bid to hold the precious resource (the breeding nucleus) intact and viable, cattle have been agisted around Capella (2013 to 2016) and south of Winton (2015 to 2016). Peter takes us further into the ongoing journey by adding, “We had some good winter rain mid 2016, this enabled us for a short time to have all the cattle home. With so much dry country in 2017/2018 we weren’t able to find agistment, we’d had a light season which meant we fed and managed by reducing numbers. By the end of ’18 and into 2019 we were feeding heavily.” Like so many others when all hope was seemingly lost, rain arrived but not what was required with Peter adding, “Toward the end of January 2019 we were hit with the flood, the impact was so great and so sudden that we lost a couple of stud sires and females, and biggest hit were the calves, not to mention the infrastructure damage that came with it. Unfortunately, this amount and type of rain was detrimental to our grass, seed bed and germination, it was too hard and fast, we lost valuable and vast quantities of topsoil and as a result little growth behind it, by October 2019 we were feeding again.” In January and February of this year the operation received 150mm of rain, only to have the feed wiped out by a grasshopper plague. Come April the family were back looking for agistment. Currently Rondel have cattle agisted south of Tambo
and Longreach. The cattle at Anrod are all being handfed hay and dried distiller grain (DDG) pellets. Though all this hardship comes another story, “We have been very fortunate with all these agistment placements, we’ve made wonderful friends, there are too many to mention, we truly appreciate their help and support”, added Peter. We’re told that ‘every adversity, contains within it the seeds of opportunity and growth’. Wajatryn Knightly (P) (Huntly Latham (P)) was a $40,000 purchase at the 2017 Droughtmaster National Sale. The Carrington’s selected him for stud duties on coat type, underline, content and new genetics into the herd. To say that the bull proving to cross well over the Rondel style of females would be stating the obvious with Peter taking us back to when Whiskey first started making an impression, “As a calf you just knew he’d get better with age, all the sire attributes, big polled head, good bone, beautiful temperament, character and that overall style. He was the heaviest weaner and that followed through. From a young age he was always a little bit above the rest.” Whiskey’s dam, Rondel Skittles (P) was a former show team member. She’s a daughter of the renowned homebred retainee, Rondel Preston (P) and granddaughter of Glenlands Oath (P). At Beef 2018 semen in Rondel Preston fetched for then a record price of $1000 per straw. Both Skittles and her dam, Rondel 3336 are still active. Skittles also has two sisters active within the herd and has just delivered her fourth calf, a full sister to Whiskey. Skittles has two daughters Whiskey Girl and Asti that are as impressive
as their dam. Skittles’ half sister, Rondel Violet Crumble (Glenlands Sandstone) was the Reserve Calf Champion at Beef 2018. Due to the crippling and ongoing drought plans to flush Skittles have been halted until there is a seasonal break. As Peter pointed out the female linage that backs the National record breaker isn’t by chance, adding “The line has proven to breed true to type, long, deep, good boned, well balanced and are overall high performers within the stud. They possess all the traits that we are looking for – highly fertile, soft, good coat types, functional and overall consistency that stand a bit above the rest”. “Although Skittles didn’t turn the judges head at her outing at the previous Beef Expo she created huge attention outside the ring, especially from overseas interests. We were offered a substantial amount of amount for Whiskey Girl shortly after the event, but saw the potential in this bloodline hence our decision to retain her and the family within the herd.” At 21-months, Whiskey (PP) a milk tooth delivered scans of 14/9mm with an EMA measurement of 142 cq cm, a 4.4% IMF reading and a scale weight of 836kgs. Considered by his breeders as the best they had yet offered at auction, Rondel Whiskey sold for an event record $160,000. His new owners are a syndicate of three prefixes, the Nindethana, High Country and the Glenlands D studs. Losing bidder on the bull were Richard Simmonds and family, Avon Downs, Clermont. Eleven bulls at the National Sale from Rondel sold for an average $27,272. Like many producers across the nation, seasonally, economically and mentally the past decade has been one of the most challenging in our history. Let’s hope that the Carrington family and all others impacted soon will get the chance to enjoy a Whiskey or his namesake.

SALE PREVIEW
GLENLANDS STAGES ‘FEMALES OF THE FUTURE’ SALE After a growing number of enquiries and increasing demand for females the Childs families will stage a ‘Females Of The Future’ Sale, at Glenlands, Bouldercombe, Saturday 27th February 2021. On offer will be a breed first where approximately 230 heifers (representing the entire drop of No. 0 Glenlands D heifers) will be offered for sale.
44
Accompanying these heifers will be 30 similar aged heifers from the Glenlands and Glenlands J prefixes. The superb offering involves both natural and IVF products from the operations’ leading donors, show and herd females. Ordinarily all these heifers would have all be aligned and retained for breeding purposes within their respective herds.
Polled and dehorned daughters by the studs leading sires will be on offer with many representing ‘first release’ or ‘first season’ sires.
The sale offers a great opportunity to acquire females that would not normally be available on the open market – donor quality individuals and new genetics all sourced from the core, leading families from within the Glenlands herds.

This competition provides producers with a unique opportunity to benchmark their stock against national standards, to gather feedback from experienced judges and identify areas where they can continue to improve to ensure our industry remains productive and profitable. Droughtmasters have excelled in these classes in previous Beef events. On the back of this, and to showcase the versatility of our great breed, we are incorporating our very own Droughtmaster Commercial Cattle Championship (“DMCC”). In addition to traditional commercial cattle judging, we are offering some new innovative classes that can offer stud and commercial breeder’s extra exposure of their bloodlines or stock. SCHOOLS
CATTLE IN THE CLASSROOM There is little doubt Cattle Club members take great pride in preparing and exhibiting their animals. Cattle Club teaches them some great essential skills, like teamwork, animal husbandry, confidence and a sense of responsibility. If you are involved with a Cattle Club anywhere in Australia we’d love to hear from you for future Droughtmaster Magazine stories.
ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE Dr Rachel Wilson BVSc 2020 was a very different year in the life of Nudgee College Cattle Club and Show Team. The year started off with a slight hiccup with our annual training weekend at Highfield Park called off due to torrential rain. We held a training weekend at Nudgee which was a great introduction for our new students, a chance to develop showing and judging skills for all the boys, and an excellent learning experience for our recently broken in cattle.
Our one and only show of the year was Bell Show which was a great success. We had a lot of new students attend their first show which was really exciting. Nudgee College supplied dinner for all the exhibitors on Friday night with donations to our charity BushKids. Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic hit soon after, and all our shows were cancelled for the year. We took the opportunity to send our NC Droughtmaster cows out to get in calf and the good news is - they are both due in January! I would really like to thank Warwick and Anne Thomas from CME
Droughtmasters for having the girls to stay and lending us your bull. We have used this year to get our home bred Droughtmaster bulls broken in and used to being handled. They are both leading well now and are very ready for Beef Australia next year. They have been registered with the Droughtmaster Society and their names are Nudgee College Tim Tam and Nudgee College Top Deck. We are all really looking forward to Beef Australia next year, and keeping our fingers crossed that it will be on!!
How many kids are part of Cattle Club this year? 69. Do you have any bloodlines for your bulls you want to share? Sires are Needmor Emmett and Rondel Volcano out of 2 Clonlara heifers. Where do the kids hope to show next year? Bell, Warwick, Beef Week, Ekka, Murwillumbah and Lismore. Any virtual training done during COVID that they found useful? We did virtual Junior Judging competitions - one that was Australia wide (Target Livestock and Marketing) and an Ekka one. Is there any area in particular the kids love or want to learn more about? They love leading cattle and also love meeting industry professionals
KILKIVAN STATE SCHOOL CATTLE JUDGING TEAM By: Kate Dodd LIVING on a commercial cattle property, it’s a given that the chatter around the dinner table is shop talk. But now, Luke and Isaac Day, aged 12 and 13, get to share their passions with two other like minded boys, Jakob Hanson, 15, and Beau Mayne, 13, as part of a new cattle club teaching the younger generation the ins and outs of cattle judging at Kilkivan State School. “They’re really enjoying the banter between themselves about which bull they like, picking out the
48
characteristics and discussing which they prefer,” the boys’ mother Teresa Day said.
Teresa was a driving force in the club’s foundation, when back in July she suggested the idea to agriculture teacher Lisa Mawhinney as school studies hadn’t yet dived into livestock. Given the restrictions due to the pandemic, live shows were out of the question, so the boys were given the chance to learn in their own time and at their own pace about what characteristics to look for and how to write and give a judgement speech.
Isaac Day, Jakob Hanson, Luke Day and Beau Mayne. Teresa said it had been a positive experience as the boys were able to learn the fundamental basics and weren’t thrown into the deep end, but that didn’t come without its struggles as they missed out on going to live shows and being able to compare cattle on the ground instead of from videos. Teresa said they were hopeful that 2021 would bring more live show opportunities, as well as more members.

Next Gen Management Comm ee!
2020 for the Droughtmaster Next Gen unfortunately meant that we were unable to attend and host a number of events this year due to COVID-19. Despite this, show societies are already planning for next year’s shows, and we look forward to getting out and about in the community again! Firstly, on behalf of the Next Gen Committee, we extend a huge thank you to all buyers and underbidders in our 2nd annual Droughtmaster Next Gen Auction! This year we raised a grand total of $5,380 over the 13 lots. An incredible effort to go towards supporting all Droughtmaster Next Genners! Following this a heartfelt thank you goes to all our generous sponsors mentioned below; the young auctioneers Simon Kinbacher (Elders), Justin Rohde (Nutrien), & Will Conachan (SBB); the team at StockLive for hosting the online platform; the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale committee; Central Queensland Livestock Exchange – CQLX; and everyone else who made the auction possible!
