IN 2022 WE CELEBRATE DROUGHTMASTER STUD BREEDERS’ SOCIETY 60TH ANNIVERSARY THE DROUGHTMASTER BY NORM CRAIG
Now in far away north Queensland In a year of eighteen ninety six In the beautiful district of Ingham Appeared the dreaded cattle ticks. Of great concern to the cattlemen And to all those would heed It became of great importance To establish a brand new breed. Some Zebu bulls were imported Around nineteen twelve, were the year And the cross-bred progeny of these bulls Helped allay the cattlemen’s fears. Straight away it was seen these cattle The dreaded ticks would accept And at handling droughts and hard-going These cattle were most adept. Now some light was seen in the tunnel A ray of light that brought some cheer And now in stepped a man called “Monty” From a property called Cashmere. Monty went ahead with his crossing Using the finest both horned and polled When his years of toil were rewarded The mighty Droughtmaster was spawned. These lovely Droughtmaster cattle Are well known wherever you go Can even be seen putting on beef In harsh conditions in Mexico. So southward to the Murray And two thousand miles to Perth We praise the faraway northland That gave the Droughtmaster birth.
REPORTS
PRESIDENT’S REPORT One of the proposals already on the table is the National Commercial Female sale slated for mid-2022. This initiative is aimed at:
all members an opportunity to market their • providing commercial females nationally; unlock access to untapped high quality • to Droughtmaster commercial herds across Australia; this sale, if possible, into registered • translate female inventory. I am sure that there are readers who consider the above sale an opportunity to either sell on or pick up some excellent Droughtmaster female commercial cattle. This edition of the Droughtmaster Australia magazine marks the last edition before the breed’s 60th Diamond anniversary celebrations commence in 2022. The breed’s Strategic Plan: The Road Ahead aims to solidify our iconic Droughtmaster as one of Australia’s most valuable cattle breeds and create a valued membership experience. Amongst many other things, it sets out that the Society will:
• Up-weight Society events and sponsored sales; brand awareness through improved • Increase marketing and promotion the appeal of being a member through • Broaden experience, value and benefits; and • Celebrate our people. Todd Heyman | President
Welcome to the December 2021 edition of the Droughtmaster Australia Magazine. AT TIME OF writing, sale results for the bull selling season are the strongest ever and the breed has seen the highest increase in membership and inventory since 2007. These results are driven in part by seasonal factors with an improvement in some key areas – however, they are also driven by strong confidence in the breed and the brand. It is clear that the breed’s Strategic Plan – The Road Ahead, which can be easily found on our website, is starting to produce the growth that it was developed to achieve. Spurred by this growth, and with a positive mindset, the Society has recently committed to even more growth – setting an ambitious target of having 37,000 registered females on the herdbook by 2024 (about 31,000 today) and achieving a growth in membership up to 750 members across Australia by 2024 (currently 625). Readers should stay tuned for initiatives aimed at achieving these ambitions.
4
In keeping with this plan, the 60th Diamond anniversary celebrations for the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders’ Society will present opportunities to highlight the achievements of the breed over the preceding 60 years, its benefits for the future and the people who continue to build the Droughtmaster breed. I am sure that there are many of you that are keen to participate in these opportunities and events, which will be announced early in the New Year. One thing that is certain, is that the breed’s 60th Diamond anniversary celebrations will continue to shine a light on our Droughtmaster females, the best mothers in the Australian beef industry - Resilient, Fertile and Productive. Finally, 2021 has been a year of contrasts. We have all been required to overcome our own challenges, as well as those that have been thrown at us. Some of us have strung a few seasons together, whilst others still hold out for rain. We have gone from relative freedom to strict isolation. And at the same time, we have seen unparalleled demand for cattle in all sectors, with prices breaking long standing records. What a year. As 2021 draws to an end, I am hopeful that that you, your family, friends and connections will be able to travel, meet, relax, enjoy the festive season – and count a few calves as well! See you next year!

DECEMBER 2021
REPORTS
CEO’s REPORT Coming out of the 2021 bull sale season the results have been outstanding for the Droughtmaster breed. It is pleasing to see high clearance rates, record averages and vendors offering quality stock to the market. I would like to congratulate all members on the bulls presented for sale this year. Over the past couple of months, the office has been heavily involved in the organisation of the Society Sponsored Bull Sales. Both sales have achieved solid results. The National Bull Sale resulted in a top price bull of $150,000 and a record sale average of $14,265. There were 415 bulls offered for a clearance of 95% and 196 bulls sold for in excess of $10,000. The Roma Bull Sale was also strong with a top priced bull of $32,000, a record average of $9,605 and with a clearance of 87.5% from 91 bulls sold. In addition to the Society Sponsored Sales, I would like to congratulate our members who host private bull sales. These sales have also flown the flag for the breed, not only with the quality of stock being offered but also with the continuous marketing and promotion of the Droughtmaster breed. As we reflect on the year gone by, it has again been another busy one for the Society in terms of sales and events and the promotion of the Droughtmaster breed. These include the following:
Simon Gleeson | Chief Executive Officer
• Gatton Futurity • National Female Sale • Beef Australia 2021 • Launch of Droughtie Premium Mid-Strength Lager • Northern Beef Producer’s Expo • Farmfest • Droughtmaster Australia Annual General Meeting • Droughtmaster National Bull Sale • Roma Droughtmaster Bull Sale • Young Beef Producers Forum Looking forward, in 2022 we will again have another busy year in front of us with the inclusion of the Society’s 60th Anniversary and the launch of a new initiative, a commercial female sale. The commercial female sale is aligned with our strategic plan in growing the breed and ultimately the number of registered females on the herdbook. In conjunction with this, next year our promotion and marketing will be heavily focused on the Droughtie female and the benefits of using them in the beef industry. Finally, I would like to thank the team in the office for all their hard work this year. It has been a big year with many challenges but has been rewarding at the same time. I would also like to thank our members and all our sponsors for their support this year and I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

A WORD FROM THE WEST
DROUGHTMASTERS STRIKE GOLD IN THE WEST By Brad Cooper
Droughtmasters continue to dominate Western Australia’s richest bull sale, with their influence growing on both sides of the continent. Two sales held at the back end of 2021 that share a bond with West Australian cattle country demonstrate the significant genetic gain Droughtmaster breeders have achieved in preparing commercially oriented, functional animals that consistently deliver on the expectations of buyers across diverse markets. In a record market of tight supply, high demand and red-hot prices to match, against a backdrop of pandemic-induced volatility, 2021 will stand out as the year when buyers looking to re-build herds and capitalise on better seasons, gravitated towards breeds with a proven trackrecord of efficacy and reliability. And it was WA’s Kimberley region, which staged two benchmark events in 2021 that provided one of the clearer snapshots of buyer psychology in a market some experts are still describing as “unchartered territory” – first with the Fitzroy Crossing Bull Sale in August and then the AuctionsPlus sale in November of 1800 commercial Droughtmaster steers and heifers from Hancock Agriculture’s Fossil Downs station.
Here’s a quick recap on both sales. As reported by the ABC, the Fitzroy Crossing Invitation Bos Indicus Bull Sale cracked $1 million in total sales when it was held on August 20. The gross taking is understood to be the highest-grossing bull sale in the state’s history. Of the 174 Tropical bulls catalogued, 65 Droughtmaster bulls sold, averaging $7,073 and recording the sale’s second top price at $14,500. The Droughtmaster average was above the sale average of $6,688, which was a record for the sale, and up more than $1,200 on last year. Northern Rural Supplies principal livestock agent Andrew Stewart told the ABC the strong prices

were a reflection of a buoyant cattle market and the highquality genetics on offer.
Australia and southern parts of Western Australia. Most went back to the paddock for backgrounding.
“It’s good for everybody. It’s good for the producers at this end but it’s also good for the vendors that have put the bulls together at a great cost,” he said after the sale.
Marketing agent Todd Walsh, who works for the same Broome based agency (Northern Rural Supplies) in charge of the Fitzroy sale, told Beef Central the key to the sale’s success was the quality of the genetics on offer.
“And it’s just a relief that they trust us to do it and then we can come up with this sort of a response — the best sale on record for us and best average.” Marking its 15th anniversary this year, the Fitzroy sale has grown in reputation, scale and influence since it was started as a fixture to carry more Queensland Bos indicus genetics into WA commercial herds. The irony is that now those genetics are flowing back to Queensland and elsewhere, not only via the interstate buyers who bought bulls from the Fitzroy sale, but due to Kimberley-bred cattle from Fossil Downs station being offered on November 5 in big numbers ex farm at Roma or equivalent, a trek of some 3500 kilometres. According to a report from Beef Central, about 1600 quality Droughtmaster backgrounder steers, made from 757c/kg ($1,700) at the heavier end down to 892c/kg ($1,410) for a lightweight line of 250 head averaging 166kg on AuctionsPlus. Sold in seven mobs each of six decks, the offering of mostly 10-13 months were drafted into mobs averaging from 266kg down to 166kg. Most of the reserves on the steers were in the 650700c range, freight included. A single line offering of their older heifer sisters – 216 Droughtmasters 18-24 months averaging 248kg made $1700 or 684.4c/kg when secured by an eastern states’ buyer, selling about $300 a head above the reserve, according to the Beef Central account. “Even deducting a figure of around 100c/kg off the sale price for the freight exercise, and these Fossil Downs steers and heifers easily set all-time records for young cattle sold out of the Kimberley region,” the Beef Central report said. Buyers for the offering came from five separate states, with consignments heading to Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South
“We’re lucky to be able to deal with these Fossil Downs Droughtmaster steers, that definitely command respect in the marketplace,” he said. “This exercise would not necessarily work the same, in terms of buyer response, if the quality of the cattle was not present. You’ve got to put the right article up, that southern buyers are prepared to have a go at.” As referenced in the Beef Central report, Fossil Downs has built up a Droughtmaster herd regarded as one of the best in the Kimberley, using premium herd bulls from some of Australia’s best credentialed Droughtmaster seedstock herds including Glenlands, Clonlara, SC, Valera Vale, Sevenell/Lyndsay Park, Rodlyn, Piggott’s, Munda Reds, High Country, Mostyndale and Aldinga. SC Droughtmaster stud principal Steve Farmer, who has played a key role in the Fitzroy bull sale as a vendor for nearly a decade, told Droughtmaster Magazine the Fossil Downs offering had a clear link to the efforts breeders have invested in the annual stud fixture over many years. “The quality of those steers and heifers definitely bore the influence of the Fitzroy bull sale, no doubt,” he said. “The sale has been attractive to Queensland breeders for many years because it allows you to market your genetics to buyers who run extensive operations targeted at the domestic slaughter trade or the live export trade. “Droughties have been a good fit because they are so versatile and can produce progeny suited to both. “It’s been great to see the results of those efforts extending to nearly every state in Australia.” One of those buyers at the stud sale included the Harvest Road Pastoral Group owned by WA billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, whose managers bought

A WORD FROM THE WEST
the sale’s second top price, a Droughtmaster bull for $14,500 from the By-Mingo stud at Biggenden, owned and operated by Don and Robyn Roberton who returned to the Fitzroy selling ring after an 11-year break. Known only by his registration number – 1030 – the two-yearold bull with Calioran, Aldinga and Billabong bloodlines will stay in the Kimberley region at Harvest Road’s Jubilee Downs. Don Roberton said the top price Droughtie was a well-grown, easy fleshing, homozygous poll bull, featuring key attributes attractive to modern buyers. “That seems to be what the market is chasing these days and he was a very good example of it,” he said.
Other big buyers at the Fitzroy sale included Gina Rinehart’s Liveringa Beef Company and Fossil Downs, Gogo Station, Hooley Station, Warrawagine Cattle Company, Kimberley Aboriginal Pastoral Company, Barn Hill, Larrawa Station, Kilto Station, Mount House, Tanami Downs and Mandora Cattle Company. In a year complicated by border closures and travel restrictions, the Fitzroy sale was uncertain months out from the event. Long-time supporter of the sale, Jimmy Edwards from Barlyne Pastoral at Gayndah, and his son Johnny, orchestrated a mammoth logistical effort with an almost military-like precision to ensure the sale would proceed as planned.
Jimmy Edwards told the ABC there was a sense of relief to see the event succeed against the odds, with the cattle trucks only making it across the WA border hours before parts of the Northern Territory went into lockdown. “We were certainly very nervous about it,” he said. “That’s why myself and [vendor] Darren Castle decided to go early to the Territory and hibernate there for two weeks so that we could get to Fitzroy before the sale in case the rest of the crew couldn’t get through. “Johnny and Steve Farmer and the truck drivers got through by the skin of their teeth from Katherine, so it all worked out in the long run, but it was pretty hairy.”

NEEDMOR HYATT
TOPS THE HONOUR ROLL IN 2021 LOT 145, NEEDMOR HYATT (P), had his time in the limelight at the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale. Offered by Cliff Mylrea and Sasha Smith, Needmor Droughtmasters, Gogango, the 23-month old bull sold to Mac and Gayle Shann, of Lamont Stud, Clermont for $150,000, taking the highest priced bull title for 2021. Hyatt is a son of Oasis Winchester out of a first calf heifer, Needmor Eloise, a daughter of homebred bull, Needmor Achilles. Mr Mylrea said Hyatt had always been a stand-out for them, even as a calf.
42 centimetres in scrotal circumference. He measured 13mm and 9mm for P8 and rib fat respectively, 143 square centimetres for eye muscle area, and 4.5pc for intra-muscular fat (IMF). “We had many discussions about retaining him for our own herd, but in the end the decision was made to sell him,” Mr Mylrea said. “We thought he might do well, but the end result exceeded all expectations by far.
“His weight for age, exceptional bone and beef, beautiful head and his bomb-proof temperament are just some of the attributes that we really loved about his bull,” he said.
“It is pleasing to know that he went to such a great home with Mac and Gayle Shann, where he’ll be introduced to a beautiful herd of cows and will be utilised to his full potential.
“We would say he’s one of the best bulls we have bred.”
“We really look forward to seeing his progeny in the years to come.”
Hyatt tipped the scales at 940 kilograms and measured
The Shanns were impressed by the photos and videos of the
Oasis Winchester son prior to the sale and were not disappointed when they saw him in the flesh. “Hyatt’s main feature that stood out was his incredible size and growth for his age,” Mac Shann said. “He has an amazing temperament, sirey head and his overall conformation and beautiful smooth body won us over.” “We are always trying to put more leg and bone under our cattle to ensure they mature into largeframed cows or well grown bullocks.” Hyatt has settled in to Cantaur Park well, delivering 500 top quality semen straws in the first week he was home. He is now out with cows and is very active. “We are already looking forward to 9 months’ time to see the first little Hyatt babies. We absolutely love him, he is an incredible specimen and Cliff and Sasha should be very proud.”

Story and photos by Ben Harden, Queensland Country Life THE CARNARVON CLASSIC Droughtmaster multi-vendor bull sale celebrated the milestone of its inaugural sale in style by achieving a top price of $34,000 at Rolleston on Tuesday. Out of 63 bulls on offer, 62 sold for a 98 per cent clearance, for a combined average of $11,365 and sale gross of $716,000. The sale was the first at Jeff and Alex Olive’s new selling complex at the Rolleston saleyards. The bulls offered on behalf of the five central Queensland-based vendors were of top quality and their growth figures didn’t disappoint. The sale started strong with the first lot of the day, Oasis Nebo (P), selling for the $34,000 top price to Peter and Sonia Fleming, Bundy Droughtmasters, Bundaberg.
A son of Hamadra Harley (P), the exceptionally well conformed 20-month-old bull entered the sale ring weighing 758kg, with a 144 square centimetre eye muscle area, and a 39cm scrotal measurement. Buyers Peter and Sonia Fleming, Bundy Droughtmasters, travelled six hours from Bundaberg to purchase the top bull, which the Flemings said was well worth the long drive. “He’s an overall package, with a nice polly head, great depth and length to him, and we weren’t going home without him,” Mr Fleming said. There were two equal secondtop price bulls on the day, with Calco Encore (P) the first to sell for $20,000 to Riverside Pastoral Co, Nebo, and Huntly Brag (H), which sold to Godwin Cattle Co, Springsure, for $20,000. Godwin Cattle Company, Springsure, paid top money to buy nine bulls to average $12,778, whilst the Semple family, Coolibah, Dysart, secured five bulls for an average of $7,200.
The Bradford family, Arcturus Downs, Springsure, purchased four bulls for an average of $7,500, while the Bishop family also bought four to average $8,250.

VENDOR JOHN ATKINSON summed up the 25th annual Cap Droughtmaster Sale as a “buyer’s market”. The sale presented ready to work commercially focused bulls. The bulls were averaging 6 weeks younger and 30kgs lighter than last year’s sale but still averaged a creditable EMA of 133.5cm2 - which was the same as last year. A testament to the performance of these cattle in drought conditions. Top dollar for the sale went to 19 month old Glenavon 4081 (PP) sold for $30,000 to Ken and Kerry McKenzie, Yaralla Droughtmasters, Bluff. Kerry McKenzie said the bull caught their eye for his sire appeal and had “a nice little something that grabbed our attention”. Kerry said, “we were chasing that strong head and good through the back”. Yaralla Droughtmasters also purchased a Garthowen Velocity son for $17,000. The second top priced bull was knocked down for $28,000 to the Parkinson Family at Middlemount who secured 6 bulls in total for a $9,500 average. These bulls

Mr Christie said the Glenavon bulls were recognised for their longevity. “They last in the herd for 10 years and you kill them on age”. “It was a bull buyer’s market today, with extremely good value” Mr Christie went on to say. Mr Christie has been buying Glenavon bulls for several years and bought bulls
on behalf of several other buyers including Coobyanger, Clermont with 5 bulls to average $9,200 and Cherwell Investments, Clermont purchasing an additional 5 bulls. Other notable sales included Glenavon Xavier (PP) selling to CMC Stud for $22,000 and Glenavon Xylus selling to Oasis A Stud for $26,000.

Jesse Barnes, Waylanbar Droughtmasters purchaser of top priced bull Lot 20 Medway Dardanelles. Photo by Julie Allen. Story by Ben Harden, Queensland Country Life UNDER CLOUDY skies at Blackall, a sale record result was achieved at the annual Artesian Droughtmaster Sale, where a Medway bull attracted the top bid of $32,500. In total, six central Queenslandbased studs sold 85 bulls, to represent a clearance rate of 100 per cent and strong average of $12,505. It was the Donaldson family of Medway Droughtmaster stud, Bogantungan, who headlined the sale, with Medway Dardanelles (P) selling to the Barnes family of Waylanbar Droughtmaster stud for $32,500. Sired by Medway Alcala (P) and out of Medway 14264F (P), the 23-month-old sire prospect tipped the scales at 875 kilograms and measured 39 centimetres in scrotal circumference. He scanned 135 square centimetres for eye muscle area and 11mm and 8mm, respectively, for P8 and rib fats. Medway stud principal Hamilton Donaldson said the sire was a “standout” son of firstseason sire Medway Alcala. “Dardanelles is a poll bull with tremendous volume through the quarter, with exceptional spring of rib and length of body,” Mr Donaldson said.

THIS YEAR’S sale saw bulls head to all corners of the state for a sale average of $10,111 and an 88% clearance. The sale again offered quality Droughtmaster sires from leading studs to a full panel of buyers. The competition saw a Hamadra bull top the day and sell for $24,000 to Ross and Luke Parkinson and family at Mount Lowe, Capella. Co-stud principal Drew McKenzie said the family were “very happy” with the sale result, and that the top bull was the top of the draft for them going into the sale. “Hamadra Kobba was very hard to fault. He’s got exceptional conformation, a good sheath, testicles and he boasted the very desirable PP status,” Mr McKenzie said. Tipping the scales at 888 kilograms, the sire prospect measured 41 centimetres in scrotal circumference and tested 90 per cent for sperm motility. Scanning 136 square centimetres for eye muscle area, he had P8 and rib fat depths of
14mm and 8mm respectively, and an intramuscular fat percentage of 5.4.
‘Best Pen’ nomination as selected by a local producer.
There were several bulk buyers operating, with top bulk-buyer Morganbury Pastoral, Charters Towers, securing a total of 6 bulls. The Dodson Family, Gayndah, W&M Cragg, Dingo and Sam Bradford, Arcturus Downs, Springsure, all took home 4 bulls each for a solid average.
The Sale vendors wish their clients every success with their new purchases, and a Merry Christmas and wet New Year.
There was plenty of local support from the Capella district which is home to plenty of Droughtmaster cows. Libby Ingram, Skye Droughtmasters, was rewarded for their cracking pen of bulls, receiving the

TECHNICAL
AN INTRODUCTION WITH SEVERAL breed societies already incorporating genomic information into their BREEDPLAN analyses, and several more aiming to move to genomic evaluations in the not-too-distant future, this Technical Note has been developed to give beef producers an introduction to genomic technology. This Technical Note outlines what genomics is, how genomics works, and how the inclusion of genomic information into the BREEDPLAN analysis can benefit beef producers.
WHAT IS GENOMICS? The genome is the genetic material of an organism; that is, all of an organism’s DNA. Genomics is the study of the genome, while genomic selection refers to the inclusion of DNA information into a genetic evaluation and selection program (such as BREEDPLAN). The DNA
information (or genotypes) used for genomic selection is in the form of thousands of genetic markers, known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). Genotypes containing these thousands of SNP markers are generated by analysing a DNA sample from the animal on a SNP chip. SNP chips are available in different densities; for example the SNP chip might have 20,000 SNP markers (20K), 50,000 SNP markers (50K) or 800,000 SNP markers (800K). To generate genomic information on their animals, breeders take a hair sample from their animals and request the breed society or a laboratory to do a genomic test on the sample. The DNA gets extracted from the hair sample, and the DNA is run on a SNP chip (density specified by the breeder, with the denser chips being more expensive). The resulting SNP genotypes can then be used, along with pedigree information and performance information, in the calculation of BREEDPLAN EBVs.
HOW DOES GENOMIC SELECTION WORK? When genomic information is not included in the BREEDPLAN analysis (the current situation for most Australian breeds), the BREEDPLAN analysis uses pedigree information and performance data (both on the individual and the related animals) to generate EBVs. When genomic information is implemented for a breed specific BREEDPLAN analysis, breeders will be able to take a hair sample on an individual animal, send the sample to the lab, and have the sample genotyped on one of the available SNP chips. The genotype information needs to be supplied to the breed to be included in the BREEDPLAN analysis and used, in conjunction with pedigree and performance information, to generate EBVs. For genomic selection to work, a reference population is required. The reference population consists of thousands of animals which have both phenotypes (performance data) and genotypes (Figure 1). Setting up a reference population
Figure 1. A reference population is critical to the implementation and ongoing success of genomic evaluations. The reference population consists of animals which have phenotypes (performance data for economically important traits) and genotypes available. The relationship between the genotypes and phenotypes of the reference population can be used to calculate genomic EBVs for young animals which have genotypes but do not have phenotypes (performance data).

TECHNICAL
TO GENOMICS has been one of the challenges in implementing genomics in many breeds of beef cattle; for most breeds to date, there simply have not been enough animals with both phenotypes and genotypes available to form an effective reference population. The ideal reference population has phenotypes collected on all traits of economic importance and interest to the breed. The second group of animals in Figure 1 are those which have genotypes, but do not yet have phenotypes collected. Typically these are young animals which have not yet reached an age where they can be performance recorded. However; any animal with a genotype but no performance data fits into this second group. Genomic selection uses the known relationships between the phenotypes and genotypes of the animals in the reference population to calculate genomic EBVs for young animals (Figure 1). There are several factors that will influence how well genomic selection works. Firstly, the size of the reference population is critical. For genomic selection to work successfully in Australian beef cattle, a reference population with a minimum of three to five thousand animals with both phenotypes (performance data) and genotypes will be needed. Secondly, genomic selection works best when the reference population is closely related to the young animal population for which genomic EBVs are being calculated. For this reason, the reference population should be designed to represent the whole genetic pool of a breed, rather than just a subset of genetics within a breed. This is also one of the reasons why genomics will not replace performance recording – there is a requirement that animals from the next generation have both genotypes and phenotypes coming into the reference population over time. It is important that seedstock producers understand genomics will not replace performance recording; the work that you as seedstock producers do to performance record your animals will be critical for the success of genomics in the future.

WHAT BENEFITS CAN BEEF PRODUCERS EXPECT FROM GENOMICS? When genomics is implemented, a breeder will be able to take a hair sample on an individual animal, send the sample away for genotyping, and the genotype information will be included in the BREEDPLAN analysis and used to generate EBVs. This will have two main applications for seedstock producers:
1. EBVs can be generated for animals which do not have performance data Within any breed, there will be a number of animals which do not have performance information as they are from herds which do not record performance data. In the future, with the inclusion of genomic information into the BREEDPLAN analysis, these animals could be genotyped and get BREEDPLAN EBVs. These animals could be from both seedstock and commercial herds. There are also a number of animals which are in BREEDPLAN herds, but do not have performance information for some traits. This may be because:
•
The animal is too young to have been measured for that trait. For example, a 200 day old calf will not have been ultrasound scanned, so is unlikely to have EMA, Rib Fat, Rump Fat or IMF EBVs. Where the 200 day old calf does have carcase EBVs, these are likely to be midparent EBVs of fairly low accuracy.
•
The trait is hard and/or expensive to measure. For example, Net Feed Intake (NFI) is measured in feedlot trials where the animals are on ad libitum feed for nearly 100 days (including the pre-trial adjustment period). This makes NFI very expensive to measure, and thus NFI measurements are usually only collected on animals in progeny test programs. Retail Beef Yield is another good example; measuring Retail Beef Yield is very expensive because the carcase has to be completely boned out and the individual retail cuts trimmed and weighed.
•
The trait is only able to be measured in one sex. For example, Mature Cow Weight is only recorded for females.
droughtmaster.com.au
•
The trait can only be measured once the animal is dead. For example, abattoir carcase information, including Retail Beef Yield and Marbling, is only measured on carcases, and not from live animals. The beef industry utilises live animal ultrasound scanning measurements as a way around this problem, but the actual carcase measurements can only be done on dead animals.
•
Even when an animal does have performance information, this information may not be able to be used effectively by the BREEDPLAN analysis. For example, when an animal is placed in a single animal contemporary group, its performance information cannot be used by the BREEDPLAN analysis to calculate EBVs. As a result, most animals in single animal contemporary groups have midparent EBVs until performance information can be collected on their own progeny or other relatives. Whatever the reason an animal does not have performance information; the animal will either not have EBVs for the trait in question or have mid-parent EBVs of fairly low accuracy. With genomics, such animals could be genotyped and get EBVS for a range of traits (provided that the inclusion of the genomic information into the BREEDPLAN analysis means that the EBVs reach the minimum accuracy threshold required to report). Animals which are too young to be performance recorded for a trait could be genotyped at a young age (e.g. at birth) and get EBVs that normally they would not receive until they were much older (e.g. rising 2 year olds with scan data). Similarly, where a seedstock producer wanted EBVs on stud animals for hard to measure traits, genomics would mean that relevant animals could be genotyped and EBVs generated using the genomic information.
2. More accurate EBVs can be generated for animals with limited performance information Currently, a young animal with no performance data (either of its own or its progeny) will have mid-parent EBVs with quite low accuracy. With the addition of its own performance data and performance
45
TECHNICAL data of its progeny, the EBVs will change (depending on how well the individual and its progeny perform within their contemporary groups) and the accuracy associated with the EBVs will increase. Genomics will “boost” the accuracy of BREEDPLAN EBVs; this benefit is most pronounced when the animal has EBVs with low accuracies. For example, a young animal may have an accuracy of 30% for one EBV; with the inclusion of a genomic test, the accuracy for that EBV might become 40%. However, an older animal, which might have an accuracy of 90% for the same EBV, would likely only have an increase to 92% accuracy for that EBV with the inclusion of genomic information. In this way genomics can be considered similar to the addition of progeny performance data into the BREEDPLAN analysis; when the accuracy of an EBV is low additional data has a large effect, and when the accuracy of an EBV is high, additional data has a small effect. Of course, the improvement in the accuracy of an EBV due to the inclusion of genomic information will vary for each trait (depending on the size of the reference population and the heritability of the trait) and for each animal (depending on how closely the animal is related to the reference population). The applications of genomics as discussed above will allow seedstock producers to identify elite bulls and heifers at younger ages than is currently possible. For example, consider an ET program where 10 full sibling bulls have been
born (Figure 2). As full siblings, these ET calves will share on average 50% of their DNA (e.g. full sibling ET calves are not genetically identical). These young bull calves, at marking time, will have identical mid- parent EBVs with low accuracy. This is illustrated in Figure 2A, where all 10 bull calves have a midparent Selection Index value of $100. Which one(s) should be kept as bull(s) for breeding purposes, and which ones should be steered? This is a difficult decision, because the breeder has limited knowledge of the genetic potential of these young bull calves, and thus has no way of differentiating these calves based on their genetic potential. Figure 2B shows the Selection Indexes generated after the inclusion of genomic information into the BREEDPLAN analysis. As illustrated in Figure 2B, following the inclusion of genomic data into the BREEDPLAN analysis, the Selection Index values for these 10 full- sibling bull calves now range from $89 to $114. As the breeder can now differentiate between calves on their genetic potential, the breeder can identify which of these young full-sibling bull calves has the desired genetics for their breeding program. The breeder can now use the best young bulls for yearling mating. Of course, the use of one Selection Index is for illustrative purposes only; in reality the breeder would need to consider both Selection Indexes and individual EBVs of importance, and do a visual assessment for structure, when making selection decisions.
As the Figure 2 example shows, the power of genomics is the identification of elite bulls and heifers at a young age. This allows cattle breeders to make selection decisions at younger ages than are currently possible, and thus shorten the generation interval. In turn, shortening the generation interval should increase the rate of genetic improvement, both for individual breeders and the breed as a whole.
CONCLUSION Several breed societies are already incorporating genomic information into their BREEDPLAN analyses, and several more are aiming to move to genomic evaluations in the foreseeable future. The introduction of genomic evaluations will have several benefits to Australian cattle producers, including the potential to calculate EBVs on animals that cannot or have not been measured for particular traits. In addition, the inclusion of genomic data in the BREEDPLAN analysis is likely to increase the accuracy of EBVs for young animals with limited performance data. Therefore, genomics looks set to be an important tool for Australian beef producers who wish to continue making genetic improvement into the future.

Figure 2. An ET breeding program results in 10 full sibling bull calves. In A) these 10 calves are too young to have performance information recorded, and so have identical mid-parent EBVs and Selection Index values. In this instance, all 10 calves have a Selection Index value of $100. In B) each of the 10 calves has had a genomic test done, and the genomic information has been included in the BREEDPLAN analysis. Here, due to the inclusion of genomic information, the Selection Index values range from $89 to $114.

CARBON NEUTRAL BY 2030: YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Source: Meat & Livestock Australia, 4 November 2021
With emissions targets dominating news headlines and COP26 underway in Glasgow, MLA has compiled these FAQs around the red meat industry’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030 (CN30). WHEN DID the red meat industry set its carbon neutrality target? Striving for carbon neutrality is nothing new for our industry – we’ve been on the journey towards net
zero emissions since 2017. With ongoing investment in this area, the industry is confident it can achieve its ambition by 2030.
Is this target even possible? CSIRO modelling has demonstrated CN30 is achievable and is compatible with industry’s target of doubling the value of red meat sales by 2030, with much of the science and practice change under investigation or already available for adoption. MLA launched the CN30 Roadmap in 2020. It provides industry with enterprise level pathways and practices that reduce GHG emissions, improve carbon storage and sequestration
and provide tools to calculate enterprise-level GHG emissions.
What progress has the industry made to date? The red meat and livestock industry has already more than halved net greenhouse gas emissions since 2005, which is more than any other sector in Australia.
How is CN30 being measured? CN30 means the Australian red meat and livestock industry will make no net release of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere by 2030, as measured by the Australian Government’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory (NGHGI).
Figure 1: Summary of net GHG emissions from the Australian red meat industry

The NGHGI reports Australia’s emissions annually, from 1990 to present, in keeping with Australia’s international GHG emissions reduction commitments, with 2005 set as the baseline year. The NGHGI reports GHG emissions as total carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) and the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) for each sector. Our industry’s major GHG emissions are enteric methane (CH4), a by product of ruminant livestock digestion, carbon dioxide (CO2) from soil and vegetation change, and nitrous oxide (N2O) from soils. Methane (CH4) is the primary source of GHG emissions from livestock. The gas is a high contributor to global warming but also has the shortest lifespan of all emissions.

burning fossil fuels continues to build up over centuries.
**Carbon Dioxide Emissions Intensity for New Australian Light Vehicles, 2018.
Methane emitted by cattle is recycled within 12 years, whereas carbon dioxide emissions from energy and transport sectors burning fossil fuels remain for thousands of years.*
But what about all the methane produced by cattle – isn’t that contributing to global warming? Cattle can actually be part of the climate solution.
Source: University of California, Davis, Methane, cows and climate change, 2020.
It’s true that cattle emit methane, a strong greenhouse gas (GHG), but methane is very different to CO2, which is the most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
Head to MLA https://updates. mla.com.au/program/impactthrough-sustainabilityinnovations for more on this.
Methane emissions from cattle break down in the atmosphere, whereas carbon dioxide from
The Global Warming Potential (GWP) is the most used and internationally accepted metric to report GHG emissions and is a measure of how much energy a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere in a given time period. The GWP of other gases, including methane, is converted to equivalent amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2e) for accounting and reporting purposes. There are alternative metrics that are being explored for accounting and reporting of short-lived GHGs, such as methane. One is GWP, which factors in the atmospheric lifespan of GHGs. MLA is currently exploring using both GWP100 (GWP over a 100-year period) and GWP in future reporting on emissions from the red meat industry.
How do emissions from cattle compare to other sectors? The electricity, energy and transport sectors are significantly larger emitters of GHG than the red meat industry. The largest emitters are electricity generation (33%), stationary energy (20%) and transport (18%), while the red meat industry makes up approximately 11.8%*. You’re emitting almost twice as much carbon by driving a car than you are eating beef 3–4 times per week. The average car travels 13,500km in a normal year and emits 2,443.5kg CO2**, whereas if you eat beef as per the Australian Dietary Guidelines, the emissions would be 1,131.8kg CO2-e per year.

Armed with a new university qualification and years of experience around cattle, junior Droughtmaster breeder Stephanie Laycock is poised to take her growing stud business to the next level. By Brad Cooper AT 23, STEPHANIE sneaks in by two years to still be classified as a junior Droughtmaster breeder, a window of opportunity she intends to relish. With a newly inked double bachelor degree in agribusiness and sustainable agriculture majoring in livestock production from the University of Queensland to her name, Stephanie admits she still has more time to spend in ‘finishing school’ – referring to the paddocks at home near the community of Eskdale in the picturesque Brisbane Valley. An easy drive from the Queensland capital, this is where Stephanie learned her trade as a young teenager, taking in the advice from dad Paul and mum Lisa, who established High Country Droughtmaster stud in 2010, and her grandparents, Rob and Viv Laycock, founders of Clay Gully Simmental stud near Esk. For more than a decade Stephanie prepared and paraded cattle throughout country shows large and small, helping the family to
promote their genetics and grow their client base while enhancing the Droughtmaster brand. She says the guidance received was invaluable and positive, motivating her to extend and augment that hands-on experience with the latest in tertiary knowledge that will equip her for the next stage of her career development. Stephanie already has something of a head start, with her family supporting her eight years ago to establish her own stud, High Country S, (S for Stephanie, of course). “My experience in the Droughtmaster community is that people are always willing to share their knowledge and help you out so that you can grow to be the best that you can be,” she said. “It’s why I believe the next generation has our industry in good hands.” Stephanie currently runs 40 breeders of her own in mobs with the High Country herd, also utilising the stud’s sire battery when it comes time for joining.
The plan is to have her stud in a financial position where she can purchase her own sires in the future and grow progeny numbers for sale, which she currently offers as a small portion within High Country’s annual on-property bull sale catalogue. The career trajectory Stephanie is following means she is deploying a range of skills that makes every day a challenge. “In any given day I can be in the off ice doing the books and payroll, to then being in the paddock fixing fences or mustering cattle,” she said. “I can’t think of too many jobs which draw on such a wide range of skill sets and utilise so many capabilities. “That’s why the cattle business is so rewarding and tends to keep people engaged for a lot longer than other jobs and professions. “It really combines the best of many worlds and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough as a career pathway for people of any age – regardless of how much exposure they may have had to cattle in the past.”
Stephanie Laycock holds Lowood Show 2016 supreme exhibit High Country Edward, with judges David Taylor and Tammie Robinson.

Over the past 20 years, the stud has improved our line of genetics, through careful selection for the important traits of temperament, polled condition, frame and muscling. Such progress has been made possible by the generous loan of bulls and donation of semen from reputable Droughtmaster studs throughout Queensland and New South Wales. We are now breeding our own bulls and have recently
conducted an IVF and ET program with a number of our proven cows. The IVF/ET program was funded by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Agribusiness Gateway to Industry Schools program (AGISP). The genetics for the embryos were provided by Ianbrae Droughtmaster Stud, Conondale, with stud principal Paul Mackay playing an integral role organising the egg collection and the IVF program. We are very happy with the bull calf from the program and by all counts he will be a promising sire. Over the past few seasons we were grateful to have had access to a reputable stud bull, Glen Ruth Ferrari, who has enhanced the quality of our herd with fast growing progeny of great temperament. We are now focusing on maintaining the traditional Droughtmaster traits in our cattle. It has been wonderful to be part of the evolution of our stud and we have earned a reputation for providing a quality product in North Queensland. The sale of our stud progeny takes place in the paddock, with temperament and genetic diversity being strong selling points.

SCHOOLS
“ WHERE SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS.” Every year, the students attend regional shows, where they judge and successfully exhibit the cattle. This year we attended both the Cairns and Tully Shows and were very successful with our exhibits, winning the Reserve Champion Bull Calf in Cairns. We continued with our success in Tully, winning the Champion Cow, Champion Bull Calf and Champion Heifer Calf under 12 months.
Cattle Show Team 2021
After many years of show training and enduring flooding rains, in combination with school funding, we have saved enough money to purchase a stud shed which will be operable in early 2022. The shed will simulate a show scenario and, being 12 by 34 metres in size, will be large enough to train the show team on the many wet days we have in Tully. The shed has been a long time coming and we are all very excited to stay dry and have a smoother preparation for the show season. The students and I are very proud to carry the Droughtmaster banner. We love the breed and are very appreciative of the support the Society has afforded us over the past 30 years. Warren Giffin Agriculture Co-ordinator and Stud Master Tully State High School

ANIMAL NUTRITION
HOW TO NAVIGATE THE TRANSITION INTO THE WET SEASON AND MAXIMIZING PRODUCTIVITY WE’RE COMING to the end of the dry season, and many lucky property owners have already received enough rain for a break in the season. For those who have only received just enough rain to bring up a bit of pick and damage the existing dry feed, this is a very dangerous transitional period because there is insufficient new growth to meet animal nutrient requirements. The damage sustained to dry standing feed renders it low in digestibility and energy, which means that pasture intake declines significantly and what is consumed is of low value. Couple this with animals chasing green pick and expending considerable energy walking around the paddock, and this leads to rapid weight loss.
If there is 30% green leaf relative to dry leaf, cattle can consume all of their diet from green leaf provided there is sufficient bulk feed. However, if green leaf makes up only 10% of the standing feed, then cattle will struggle to get any green leaf at all. Note the considerable amount of damage sustained to the dry leaves of the grass in the photo above. This damage is not offset by the new growth because there are insufficient green shoots so the cattle still have to rely on grazing the damaged pasture to meet their daily dry matter intake requirement. The green pick, or grass in phase 1 growth, is considered by many to be low value. Quite the contrary, it is very high in nutritional value however, the dry matter is so low (or conversely, the moisture content is so high) that animals have to
DECEMBER 2021
•
consume considerable quantities to meet their daily dry matter intake requirement. For example, if an adult beast normally would consume approximately 8 kg of dry pasture that is undamaged and of reasonable quality, then by contrast, to consume 10 kg of dry matter of higher quality green feed in early phase 1 growth when the dry matter of that green feed might only be approximately 30%, the animal would have to consume 33 kg of the green pick. This leads to weight loss because the animals is expending considerable energy walking around, and because there simply isn’t sufficient pasture available for the animal to readily meet its daily dry matter intake potential. What is the solution to prevent rapid weight loss? Firstly, it is important to leave a sufficient residual of standing dry matter at the end of the dry season so that when there is a break in the season, the pasture will respond quickly and the period of limiting fresh new growth will be minimized, reducing the weight loss during this period. Secondly, because cattle are herbivores, they will always graze green pasture in preference to any other energy supplements that might be on offer, including grain, molasses and whole cottonseed. What they will readily consume however, is palatable hay. While it may seem extravagant to feed out hay after rain, there are very important reasons for this. Feeding hay at this stage confers the following benefits: 1. Provides necessary energy (primarily) and protein to the animal, to keep it strong over the period where it expends a lot of energy walking 2. Provides the microbes in the gut with fibre which is particularly low in the fresh green pick. The microbes require the fibre as a source of energy and to do their job of converting the fibre to a form of energy that can be absorbed by the animal, known as volatile fatty acids, or VFA’s. The microbial population needs to be maintained to ensure that they continue to process fibre to provide essential energy to
droughtmaster.com.au
the animal, and the microbes themselves provide up to 70% of the animal’s protein requirement. It may not be practical to get hay out to livestock or paddocks might simply be too big for cattle to find the hay, however, where it is possible, feeding hay over the limited period where the growth of pasture is slower than the rate of grazing by cattle, will provide cattle with the necessary nutrients and fibre, as well as reduce the pressure on the pasture, allowing it to grow more quickly. Having a healthy army of microbes in the rumen will boost animal performance over the wet season.
Do you really know if your cattle are phosphorusdeficient or not? If you haven’t checked the phosphorus status of your cattle, I strongly recommend you conduct an analysis to determine whether they are receiving adequate phosphorus in the diet. Where animals have a marginal deficiency, this may not be visually obvious, however, it is reflected in reduced animal performance and milk production. The phosphorus status of the cattle may be adequate per se, and meet their requirements for maintenance and some weight gain, however, if protein and energy are high in the diet and phosphorus is the primary limiting nutrient, then supplementation with additional phosphorus may lift productivity further, resulting in improve breeder body condition score, and heavier weaning weights. The best time to check phosphorus status is mid-wet season when protein and energy are at their peak and phosphorus should also be at its peak. Testing can be done either by taking blood samples or collecting faecal samples to carry out a faecal phosphorus test. It is important that animals have not been on a phosphorus supplement recently at the time of testing in order to get a true indication of the phosphorus status of the animals.

WHAT IS
PASTURE DIEBACK?
A pasture dieback-affected paddock of buffel grass in Barallabra, Queensland
Source: M eat & Livestock Australia PASTURE DIEBACK is a condition which causes the death of sown and native pastures by affecting plant health and function, reducing the productivity of affected properties. It has been observed in a range of soil types and plant species across Queensland and northern NSW. The condition occurs episodically, with the current outbreak first identified in early 2015
and spreading across eastern Queensland in subsequent years. In early 2020, pasture dieback was also confirmed in northern NSW.
How to identify pasture dieback The symptoms of pasture dieback generally occur initially as patches in otherwise seemingly healthy pastures. If a producer suspects pasture dieback on their property, they should be on the look-out for: yellowing, reddening or • vivid bronzing of the leaves, starting from the tip and progressing

down towards the ligule (the symptoms develop first on the oldest leaves, but eventually spread to the whole plant)
in root system • reduction and grass density that become unthrifty • plants and eventually die that become grey • pastures and disintegrate once dead • cattle avoiding affected plants.
Initially, patches of dieback are roughly circular, ranging from 2–60m

in diameter. These areas can grow irregularly, spreading at speeds ranging from slow (cm2/week in the dryer, colder months) to rapid (ha/week in the wetter, warmer months). Multiple patches can coalesce to form large, dead areas. Producers have also observed that dieback is most severe in areas of long grass with large amounts of thatching – for example, under fence lines or areas of low pasture utilisation.
What pasture species have been affected?
Queensland The main species which have been affected in Queensland are: Buffel grass Sabi grass Creeping blue grass Rhodes grass
What is the cause of pasture dieback? Although it is not definitive, there are strong indications that pasture mealybugs (Heliococcus summervillei) are the leading cause of dieback. However, research also indicates there are secondary causal factors at play, and understanding these is key to understanding why episodic outbreaks occur.
Panics
What regions are affected? Reliable estimates of pasture affected by dieback are currently not available, however, AgForce has predicted the outbreak to cover a large area of productive Queensland, with estimates ranging between 400,000 and 4.4 million hectares. The below map shows the approximate areas pasture dieback has been reported in. However, it does not indicate how prevalent pasture dieback is in each region, as this information is currently not available.
Are there any known treatments and chemicals that can control pasture dieback?
Paspalum Signal grass Para grass Pangola grass Seteria Black spear Grass Forest blue grass Golden beard grass
Source: QDAF
NSW The main species which have been affected in northern NSW are: Broad leaf paspalum Bahia grass
Currently there are no APVMA approved and registered chemicals which can be used to treat pasture dieback.
How fast can pasture dieback spread? Patches of dieback are initially roughly circular, ranging from 2–60m in diameter. These areas can grow irregularly, spreading at speeds ranging from slow (cm2/week in the dryer, colder months) to rapid (ha/week in the wetter, warmer months). Multiple patches can coalesce to form large, dead areas.
