Understanding Barcodes System: Inventory Control Management

In this document, you will learn how many types of barcodes and how to design and scan barcode labels. Many manufacturing and other industries have work that must go through several steps to completion. Barcode systems can track material through each step of the work and keep detailed records on each piece or batch. When a problem occurs in the output, supervisors and managers can track the work back and quickly resolve the issue. This is one of the best ways to improve both quality and yield in virtually any multi-step process. Inventory Control: Tracking inventory manually is a laborious process. With barcodes applied to each item in inventory, portable scanners can be used to track shipping and receiving and quickly take physical inventory. The data from portable scanners can be uploaded to a central computer system at regular intervals or portables can update inventory in real-time, depending on the system you choose. Barcode inventory control provides accurate, real-time inventory updates. This allows a company the opportunity to reduce stock levels and thereby reduce carrying costs. It also reduces the time taken to collect data for purposes such as annual inventories. With improved efficiency, operating costs are lower.

What is a Bar Code? A barcode is an optical machine readable representation of data relating to the object to which it is attached. Originally barcodes systematically represented data by varying the widths and spacing of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or one-dimensional (1D). Later they evolved into rectangles, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns in two dimensions (2D). Barcode a machine readable code in the form of numbers and a pattern of parallel lines of varying widths, printed on a commodity and used especially for stock control.

How many types of Barcodes? Barcode are mainly two types such as linear barcode and two dimensional barcode. Linear barcodes: A barcode that encode data in one dimension. In this data encoded in the width of bars and spaces, no data encoded in the length of bar. The most common UPC and EAN barcode symbol found on many retail products are linear barcodes. To identify the start and end of barcode, a special guard paten is used to indicate the scanner that the barcode start and also identify what type of symbology used. Some linear barcode symbology also add check digit at end of data. This check digit is used to verify that interpreted data has been read correctly. Linear Barcode fonts: Coda bar, Code 11, Code 128, Code 128 SET A, Code 128 SET B, Code 128 SET C, Code 39, Code 93, Code 39 Full ASCII, EAN13, EAN8, Industrial 2 of 5, Interleaved 2 of 5, ISBN 13, ITF-14, LOGMARS, MSI Plessey, Planet, Postnet, Standard 2 of 5, Tele pen, UCC/EAN128, UPCA, UPCE, USPS Sack Label, USPS Tray Label, USS-93.

2D barcode labels: A Barcode that encode data in 2 dimensions including horizontally as well as vertically. 2d barcode has ability to hold more information in lesser place. These barcode are smaller and denser. 2d barcode also called quick response barcode because they enable fast data access. 2d barcode can often used with conjunction of mobile phone. They are easily read by phone camera equipped with barcode reader. 2D barcode fonts: Aztec, Data bar, Data bar Code 128, Data bar Code 128 Set A, Data bar Code 128 Set B, Data bar Code 128 Set C, Data bar Expanded, Data bar Limited, Data bar Stacked, Data bar Stacked Omni, Data bar Truncated, Data bar EAN 13, Data bar EAN 8, Data bar MicroPDF417, Data bar PDF417, Data bar UPCA, Data bar UPCE, Data Matrix, Maxi Code, PDF417, QR Code, MICR Font

Your barcode labels are ready for labeling on your business products. During a shopping excursion to a shopping mall, you would have noticed the cashier scanning your products using some Laser device to produce a bill. What actually he is doing that he is reading the product barcodes using a Laser/Barcode scanner. Barcode scanner reads the code, data is sent to the computer, and computer looks up into the database for the price and description of the item.
