HOW TO TREAT PUNCTURE WOUNDS IN YOUR DOG?

Dogs can unintentionally get into things that could harm them.

If your dog ends up with a puncture wound, we need to know what to do in order to help them out.

Depending on the type of puncture wound, you can treat it yourself or seek help from a veterinarian.

You need to be prepared for either of these options if a puncture wound does occur.

BE MINDFUL, ASSESS, AND DETERMINE

The first thing you must remember is that your dog is in pain.

Your dog is reacting Instinctually to protect himself in this type of situation.

Upon looking you have to decide whether the puncture is minor that you can treat or it needs a veterinarian.

Wounds or cuts that are larger, or deeper, or is bleeding should be treated by the veterinarian.

TREAT MINOR WOUNDS YOURSELF

Once the puncture wound is clear, you can begin to treat it.

First, use a wet warm washcloth & apply a layer of triple antibiotic ointment.

Put a cone on your dog or wrap the wound to prevent licking.

Don’t wrap it too tight as it will restrict the blood flow that can slow the healing process.

BRING YOUR DOG TO THE VETERINARIAN

If the puncture wound is larger than an inch, then bring your dog to the veterinarian.

Only a veterinarian will be able to properly diagnose & treat the puncture wound.

You will be doing your dog & yourself a service by visiting Dr. Rons Animal Hospital & Emergency.
