The

The Transit of Mercury By coincidence Remembrance Day coincides with the rare event of Mercury aligning itself directly between the Sun and the Earth. This is referred to as a transit and last occurred on May 9th 2016 and will not occur again until November 13th 2032. In astronomy terms the transits of both Mercury and Venus are spectacular astronomical events from which early astronomers worked out the size of the Solar System and the distances of the Earth from the Sun. This was done by timing how long it took the inner planets to cross the Sun and then apply the timing with other known data. However; you need to be warned NOT TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN. The transit can be observed safely only: 1 If you have an approved solar filter fitted if using a telescope. 2 “Or by projecting the Sun’s image through a small telescope onto a securely-held shaded piece of white card, located at a correctly focused distance from the telescope eyepiece” (courtesy of Astronomy Now). 3 Alternatively the safest way of all will be by using the internet. There will be numerous sites projecting the transit live. Timings: Transit commences at 12.35pm and is midway across the Sun at 3.20pm and will still be in transit at sunset which occurs at around 4.30pm.

Diary Winter Solstice – Sunday 22nd December 04.19 hours this is the shortest day and the longest night of the year but from this day on the days gradually get lighter.

The Planets Mercury The transit of Venus occurs on November 11th. Following the transit Mercury can be observed early mornings above the south eastern horizon during November eventually disappearing by midDecember. Venus Venus is very prominent during the early evening during November culminating on the 24th November at around 16.00 – 17.30 hours low in the south west within close proximity to Jupiter, Venus being the brightest by far. The planet continues its journey during December being very bright but setting at the relatively early hour of 18.00 hours. Mars Mars rises early during November and December at around 5.00 hours and can be observed easily in the south east skies from between 06.00 and 07.00 hours. Jupiter Jupiter can be seen early evenings in the south west to the upper left of the very bright Venus during the first 3 weeks of November. From the 24th November their positions will have changed with Jupiter being to the lower right of Venus. Jupiter sets at 17.00 hours during December. Saturn Saturn is easy to identify during November following Jupiter but the beautiful planet sets early between 18.00 and 19.00 hours. By December it is to the upper left of Venus and sets around 18.00 hours. May I take this opportunity of wishing all our readers A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year – John Harris

Feminine Waves of Change If you are a woman in the throes of mid-life, you are not feeling like yourself and you find life is more challenging than usual, it may come as no surprise to learn that fluctuating hormones may be upsetting your balance. Our hormones are capable of magical things, but they also can cause havoc, especially in mid-life around the age of 45 as we move towards the menopause. We might find we are uncharacteristically emotional with unpleasant side effects showing up and, for some women, this can have an overwhelming effect on their self-esteem. Research from Nuffield Health discovered that, sadly, 1 in 4 women with menopausal symptoms were concerned about their ability to cope with life. Some of the symptoms commonly experienced are: Insomnia, brain fog, forgetfulness, mood swings, anxiety, fatigue, hot flushes, joint pains, itching, changes in skin and hair. Often women know things are out of kilter yet concerned about the impact on work, home, on their family and relationships, they plough on regardless; caring for their needs is put aside. It doesn’t have to be; there is help and support available. Some women choose Hormone Replacement Therapy [HRT], some choose a natural approach or, a combination of both. Whichever is chosen what’s important is self-care, which means taking an active role in protecting your own well-being and happiness. I am passionate about a multi-faceted approach to self-care, to bring about physical and emotional balance. During my own mid-life journey, I discovered the huge benefits of natural, holistic therapy to help me cope, look well and feel well. Now, I

specialise in helping other women to transition this menopausal period and adopt self-care. Therapeutic plant essential oils are central to my programmes. These powerful and complex oils invigorate, energise and uplift; they sooth, calm and relax. They help with concentration, sleep, fatigue and anxiety, they rejuvenate the skin. Combined with massage the effects can be healing, supporting, restoring and renewing, working on a mental, spiritual, emotional and physical level to restore the body’s equilibrium. Aromatherapy is so much more than a diffuser; studies evidence its effectiveness and it is recognised by the NHS as a complementary therapy in patient care. My mission is to make a positive difference to women who are going through mid-life change so that they feel healthier, happier, confident and in control - feeling like they have their mojo back! If you are struggling and would like to discover how I could help, please call me for a complimentary chat or, if you would like to experience the joy of essential oils I would love to introduce you to therapeutic aromatherapy by way of a discounted introductory treatment. Behind the Scenes: Rural Crafts of the Cotswolds Behind the Scenes: Rural Crafts of the Cotswolds will be presented at the Corinium Museum’s Resource Centre in Northleach by Museum Collections Assistant Dr Caroline Morris on 20th November 2019 at 11am. After a tour of the Resource Centre, the talk will take a closer look at objects and photographs from the collection that evoke the rural crafts of the past. From tools once used by thatchers and hurdle makers, to photographs of hedge layers and Blacksmiths, our reserve collections reveal the craft & skills once common sights in the Cotswolds. Through the items we have in our collection, this talk hopes to evoke some of the crafts, the people that were associated with them, and why they might have been collected. Caroline tells us “To feel the weight of the thatcher’s sheers or the beekeeper’s skep, is to imaginatively step into the craftsperson’s shoes, however briefly.” For more information or to book tickets, please contact the Corinium Museum on 01285 655611 or go to www.coriniummuseum.org

New woodland walk now opened at Edwardstow Court for the enjoyment of all

Many of those who had supported the project also attended the opening event, including representatives of Cotswold Friends, which created bug houses for the woodland, and local artist Louise Evans, who painted a watercolour map of the site. Pupils from Stow-on-the-Wold Primary School also attended and were excited about how they could use the woodland for outside events and activities.

A beautiful woodland walk has been officially opened at Edwardstow Court in Stow-onthe-Wold for the benefit of residents and the wider community. Over the last year a patch of woodland next to the home has been transformed into an attractive and tranquil outside space. A new path, accessible for all, including wheelchair users, now winds through the woodland, and new seating areas have been added. The woodland, which is hoped will become a haven for wildlife, will be a lovely spot for residents and their loved ones to sit or enjoy a gentle walk. The local community, which has been very involved in the regeneration project, are also very welcome to use the space. The Mayor of Stow-on-the-Wold, Ben Eddolls, officially opened the woodland walk, describing it as a real asset for the town and a great way of bringing younger and older generations together.

14

Your CotswoldLink

Residents who had been heavily involved with the project, including choosing seating and judging the winner of a best bird box competition, loved getting their first chance to explore the finished woodland walk. Kerry Dearden, Deputy CEO, comments: “The Woodland Walk opening was a wonderful event which was shared by not only our residents and the team at Edwardstow but by several members of the local community who came out to support this venture. I would like to thank everyone involved who helped to prepare the woodland walk and the Trust hopes it will be fully utilised by all in Stow and the surrounding region.

Council Tax support changes Cotswold District Council is calling on residents to give their views on proposed changes to its Council Tax Reduction Scheme. The Council has launched a consultation which runs until Friday 15 November and is open to all residents in the district, not just those in receipt of support. If agreed, the changes would come into effect on 1 April 2020. Changes proposed include: · Introducing a new income banded scheme to take account of different groups from single occupants to couples and families with children. · Introducing an ‘extended period’ of up to eight weeks to support the transition of households whose increased income sees them move into higher banding. · Removal of the two child limit to help larger families have more disposable income · Introducing an increase to the maximum amount of savings claimants can have, from

£6,001 to £10,000. Cllr Mike Evemy, Deputy Leader of Cotswold District Council and Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “This consultation is vital to understanding the views not just of those who rely on Council Tax support, but also the wider communities we serve. I’d encourage anyone who can spare a few moments to fill out the survey and help us to ensure any changes made best suit the needs of residents. “Ultimately, we want to achieve a scheme that is simple to understand and effective in ensuring people in greatest need are receiving the right support.”

The survey can be found online at www. cotswold.gov.uk/CTRS, while paper copies can be found at: Trinity Road, Cirencester GL7 1PX and the Moreton Area Centre and Tourist Information, High St, Moreton-inMarsh GL56 0AZ

Following the consultation, a report will be considered by councillors before a decision is made.

Pots of Cabbage! November can be a bit of a grey, miserable month. My kids would call it ‘meh’. I like to inject some colour with winter bedding plants. A cheerful pot by the front door can make you smile on the gloomiest morning. Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple – with either attractive frilly or very spiky leaves. They pair beautifully with winter-flowering pansies and hardy cyclamen.

/ 15inches) and plant one frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winter-flowering pansies. Finally plant a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting display will give you pleasure through November, December and January. Tips Select a frostproof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions. The most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most terracotta will crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof.

and winter. If they still going strong as winter turns to you can give them a bit of a feed, but by February or March you will want to think about replanting your pots with spring bedding. Think about gravel – I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish, keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a little microclimate in which the plants will be happier. Water them! The plants will need moisture around their roots so water as needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots because the plants are unable to absorb the water.

Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the cabbages. Plant a 50cm / 20inch pot with four large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot (38cm

Use a good general-purpose compost. There are mixes specifically made for use in containers, which provide the essential drainage that plants living in pots need. Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots. A good compost will contain enough slow release fertiliser to maintain the plants for several weeks during autumn
