New Owner at Higher Health & Healing Higher Health and Healing, a complementary health clinic situated in the beautiful Cornbury Park has recently changed hands. The new owner, Karina Athwal, has brought together a number of experienced practitioners offering a full range of therapies to individuals seeking to enhance their health and wellbeing. “We help our clients feel their best. So many people struggle with fatigue, weight, stress, depression, digestive issues, insomnia and other health challenges and have come to accept such ailments as part of life. But it doesn’t have to be so. Simple lifestyle changes can make a significant difference and bring back the spark. We see so many clients here, who with a bit of guidance have changed their life for the better”. Karina is a nutritional therapist and clinical psycho-neuro-immunologist. between the mind and immune system and the pathways that lead to chronic illnesses. “Excessive stress is a major factor in disease. I used to be a lawyer working in a large corporate law firm so I have had my fair share of stress and can relate to many of the consequences of stress that I see in my clinic. Whether advising on nutrition, exercise or stress management, at the end of the day it is all about education, teaching people how to change unhelpful habits. We now also offer massage, reiki, osteopathy, reflexology, hypnotherapy, NLP, energy medicine, shamanic healing and more so we have many tools to support each individual. ............................................................. 3 Southill Business Park, Cornbury Park Charlbury, OX7 3EW Tel: 01608 811485 www.higherhealthandhealing.co.uk info@higherhealthandhealing.co.uk

Capture the Cotswolds Calling all photographers! With Spring now upon us, the Cotswold and West Oxfordshire District Council tourism team are on the lookout for some iconic images of our glorious rural landscape, lively events and wonderful local towns. A newly launched 2016 competition is offering keen amateur photographers of all ages the opportunity to capture stunning images of the local area. There are five different categories and competitors can enter up to ten images. The winning photos will be used to promote local tourism in the coming year and will also feature in 2017 publications that entice visitors to the area. One overall winner will receive a fantastic prize package which includes a luxurious spa treatment and refreshments voucher at The Cotswold House Hotel in Chipping Campden, and a family pass to Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park. Additionally, the owner of the winning image will receive a special canvas picture of the photograph, courtesy of Blue Print Imaging in Witney who have been a regular supporter of the competition over the years. Chris Jackson, Shared Tourism Manager at Cotswold and West Oxfordshire District Councils, said: “The idea behind the photo competition is to celebrate our local area which is enjoyed and appreciated so much by local residents and visitors. The competition allows the tourism service to feature more lovely iconic images of people, towns and events within The Cotswolds which help to attract visitors. Destinations have

The UK’s only touring tribute festival is coming to Carterton for the first time this summer, and is celebrating its 10th anniversary. All the fun kicks off at Carterton Community College on Saturday, 25th June, with three major tribute acts and five local support bands, who will be turning up the heat this summer. Carterton Fake Festival is a brand new date on the Fake Festivals tour, and Lynne Little, licensee for the event, is excited to be a part of it.
“I’ve always been a huge music fan, and RAF Brize Norton is part of our town. Being Mayor of Carterton, myself and our events committee wanted to expand on what we already do on Armed Forces Day,” explains Lynne. “One of our committee members is a RAF wife who has been to previous Fake Festivals, and when she explained to us what a Fake Festival was, it seemed to be an ideal way to expand the events we hold on Armed Forces Day.”

Who will take care of my children if I die without a Will? If you have children under 18, have you ever considered what would happen to them if you were to die? Who would look after them? Guardianship For many people, appointing people to look after their children if they die is one of the most important functions of a will. These people – guardians – will have “parental responsibility” for the children. A person with parental responsibility is entitled to take decisions on behalf of a child for example about education, medical treatment and where they will live. Having parental responsibility does not, in general, mean that person is financially responsible for the child. A guardianship will only be effective if no surviving parent has parental responsibility for the child. In other words, usually, if one parent dies but another survives the surviving parent will have parental responsibility. When does a parent have parental responsibility? • If the child’s parents are married at birth, then both will have parental responsibility • If not, the mother will have parental responsibility • A father will acquire parental responsibility if the parents subsequently marry or if he is named on the child’s birth certificate (for children born after 1 December 2003) or under a court order • Adoptive parents have parental responsibility What if there’s no one with parental responsibility? If both you and the other parent were to die and there is no guardian appointed for your children, then the courts would appoint someone instead. This could mean that someone you wouldn’t have chosen will be being left...

to bring up your children. It can also cause delay at what will already be an upsetting and difficult time. This can all be avoided by appointing guardians in your will. Getting parental responsibility Even if you think your estate is small and you have very little to leave in a will, if you have children it is always worth making a will to make sure you get to choose their guardian. Surely it is clear to see if you’re a parent the most important thing you can do for your children is to make sure they’re cared for by the people you would choose if anything were to happen to you. Lionheart LLP will take you through all the important factors you need to consider for your children, giving you tips and advice along the way. We’ve made it all so easy that not having a will in place shouldn’t be an option. Our advice is Free – Lionheart Later Life Planning – 01993 220281

Celebrate
‘The Year of the Garden’ in the Cotswolds
The Cotswolds are home to some of the finest English gardens ever created and spring is the perfect time to witness their beauty first hand. As memories of the long cold winter melt away, garden visits are a wonderfully optimistic way to mark Visit England’s Year of the Garden. As spring bulbs and blossom replace the snowdrops of late winter, Cotswold gardens offer world-class design and planting in a traditional and intimate country setting.
For stunning spring colour, head for Batsford Arboretum – famed for outstanding autumn colour but a fairy tale picture of confetti blooms thanks to the collections of Japanese flower cherries and magnolias. The

The Transit of Mercury A transit in astronomical terms is when a body; in this case Mercury; passes directly between the Earth and the Sun. Although Mercury orbits the Sun every 88 days a transit of Mercury only occurs 13 times each century. This is due to the inclination of Mercury’s orbit with respect to Earth. This transit of Venus occurs on Monday 9th May 2016. You must not look at the Sun through binoculars, a telescope or with the naked eye to observe the transit; doing so may cause permanent damage to the eyes. To observe the transit you need specifically manufactured filtered lenses, a solar scope or observe via the internet.
Path of Transit (courtesy of Wikipedia)
Please note that the times of the transit in the above diagram are in Universal Coordinated Time (UTC). Actual times of the transit are British Summer Time that is between 12.12 hours and 19.42 hours. The next Transit of Venus following this one occurs on Remembrance Day November 11th 2019.
Facts about Mercury
• Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Oddly it is not the hottest because it has very little atmosphere so the heat from the Sun can escape. However; Venus the hottest planet has a more dense atmosphere which helps retain the heat from the Sun by means of a “Greenhouse Effect” • Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System; it has a diameter just

short of 4,879 km (3,031 miles) this compares with the Earth’s diameter of 12,742km (7,917 miles). • Mercury is the second densest planet in the Solar System. The densest being Earth. • Only two spacecraft have ever visited Mercury these being Mariner 10 in 1974 and 1975, then by the Messenger probe in 2004.

The Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy 110 million light-years away in the constellation of Pisces (The Fish). The existence of LSB galaxies were first suggested by Mike Disney in 1976. Most of the matter present in LSB galaxies is in the form of hydrogen gas rather than stars. Temperatures of 10 trillion degrees have been estimated for the core of Quaser 3C273, this is much hotter that formerly thought possible. The results were achieved by combining signals recorded from radio antennas on Earth and in space – effectively creating a telescope of almost 8-Earth-diameters in size. Residents in Carterton can rest easy with the installation of dozens of new environmentally friendly benches that help promote the importance of recycling. The 24 benches represent a major upgrade from the previous furniture which had deteriorated into a poor condition and are made from the type of recycled plastics collected fortnightly from households across the District. Taking the green option was the brainchild of Teresa Whitford who investigated the possibility of making the new additions backed by colleagues at Carterton Town Council. “A lot of the benches in the town were very old and unusable so I asked if I could buy new ones,” said Ms Whitford, an administrative assistant at the council. I am passionate about recycling and sourced some street furniture made from recycled plastics which the council approved.” The UK-made benches are hard wearing and require virtually no maintenance apart from occasional cleaning. The first batch of 14 has now been installed with a further

10 due to be put in place within weeks. They have been complemented by 10 new bins and dog waste containers complete with free bag dispensers paid for by sponsorship from local businesses. Carterton Mayor Lynn Little said: “The benches represent a massive improvement as well as being a responsible choice.” Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Waste Collection and Recycling, said: “Carterton is expanding and it is great to see visible improvements being made that will affect every resident. The environmentally friendly approach also sets an excellent example.”
Leisure centre powers ahead with solar panel scheme A leisure centre is set to generate its own electricity after West Oxfordshire District Councillors gave an alternative power scheme the green light. Carteron Leisure Centre is to have solar panels installed next month which will produce enough electricity to power the site during daylight hours. Work on the £155,000 scheme will start immediately to ensure it qualifies for the existing feed-in tariff which ended on March 31. It had previously been given the go ahead last October but changes to the tariff which provides payments from the energy supplier along with a lack of spare capacity from
electricity network operator SSE meant it had to be revised. The new scheme will mean that electricity generated will be used to power the building during the day with the centre reverting to the grid in the evening. Cllr James Mills, Cabinet Member for Sports and Leisure Facilities and Strategy, said: “This innovative scheme will ensure a large proportion of the leisure centre’s electricity needs are met in an environmentally friendly way. It is estimated that over the course of 20 years, carbon emissions will be reduced by 781.82 tonnes, while gross profit for the scheme over the same period will be £158,196.
