New woodland walk now opened at Edwardstow Court for the enjoyment of all A beautiful woodland walk has been officially opened at Edwardstow Court in Stow-on-the-Wold for the benefit of residents and the wider community. Over the last year a patch of woodland next to the home has been transformed into an attractive and tranquil outside space. A new path, accessible for all, including wheelchair users, now winds through the woodland, and new seating areas have been added. The woodland, which is hoped will become a haven for wildlife, will be a lovely spot for residents and their loved ones to sit or enjoy a gentle walk. The local community, which has been very involved in the regeneration project, are also very welcome to use the space. The Mayor of Stow-on-the-Wold, Ben Eddolls, officially opened the woodland walk, describing it as a real asset for the town and a great way of bringing younger and older generations together.

10

Your CotswoldLink

Many of those who had supported the project also attended the opening event, including representatives of Cotswold Friends, which created bug houses for the woodland, and local artist Louise Evans, who painted a watercolour map of the site. Pupils from Stow-on-the-Wold Primary School also attended and were excited about how they could use the woodland for outside events and activities. Residents who had been heavily involved with the project, including choosing seating and judging the winner of a best bird box competition, loved getting their first chance to explore the finished woodland walk. Kerry Dearden, Deputy CEO, comments: “The Woodland Walk opening was a wonderful event which was shared by not only our residents and the team at Edwardstow but by several members of the local community who came out to support this venture. I would like to thank everyone involved who helped to prepare the woodland walk and the Trust hopes it will be fully utilised by all in Stow and the surrounding region.

Behind the Scenes: Rural Crafts of the Cotswolds Behind the Scenes: Rural Crafts of the Cotswolds will be presented at the Corinium Museum’s Resource Centre in Northleach by Museum Collections Assistant Dr Caroline Morris on 20th November 2019 at 11am. After a tour of the Resource Centre, the talk will take a closer look at objects and photographs from the collection that evoke the rural crafts of the past. From tools once used by thatchers and hurdle makers, to photographs of hedge layers and Blacksmiths, our reserve collections reveal the craft & skills once common sights in the Cotswolds. Through the items we have in our collection, this talk hopes to evoke some of the crafts, the people that were associated with them, and why they might have been collected. Caroline tells us “To feel the weight of the thatcher’s sheers or the beekeeper’s skep, is to imaginatively step into the craftsperson’s shoes, however briefly.” For more information or to book tickets, please contact the Corinium Museum on 01285 655611 or go to www.coriniummuseum.org

The art of remembering – Council calls on pupils to create a memorial flame for Holocaust Memorial Day Cotswold District Council is calling on the district’s secondary school pupils to mark Holocaust Memorial Day by creating art for a special exhibition. Schools are being asked to submit work based on the image of a memorial flame which will be displayed in the Council’s offices in Trinity Road, Cirencester for a week from January 27th 2020.The exhibition will support a campaign run by The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust entitled Stand Together, where organisations and communities are being encouraged to create their own memorial flames, 75 of which will be displayed in a national exhibition to mark the 75 years since the end of the holocaust. https://www.hmd.org. uk/take-part-in-holocaust-memorial-day/holocaust-memorial-day2020/75-memorial-flames/ Councillor Jenny Forde said: “It is vital that the lessons of the Holocaust and all subsequent genocides are not forgotten. Only by sharing these dark chapters of our history with the younger generation can we seek to prevent such atrocities from happening again. It is therefore only right that Cotswold District Council joins many others throughout the UK to support and promote understanding and co-operation amongst our communities, for Holocaust Memorial Day

Pots of Cabbage! November can be a bit of a grey, miserable month. My kids would call it ‘meh’. I like to inject some colour with winter bedding plants. A cheerful pot by the front door can make you smile on the gloomiest morning. Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple – with either attractive frilly or very spiky leaves. They pair beautifully with winter-flowering pansies and hardy cyclamen. Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the cabbages. Plant a 50cm / 20inch pot with four large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot (38cm

16

Your CotswoldLink

/ 15inches) and plant one frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winter-flowering pansies. Finally plant a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting display will give you pleasure through November, December and January. Tips Select a frostproof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions. The most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most terracotta will crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof. Use a good general-purpose compost. There are mixes specifically made for use in containers, which provide the essential drainage that plants living in pots need. Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots. A good compost will contain enough slow release fertiliser to maintain the plants for several weeks during autumn

and winter. If they still going strong as winter turns to you can give them a bit of a feed, but by February or March you will want to think about replanting your pots with spring bedding. Think about gravel – I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish, keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a little microclimate in which the plants will be happier. Water them! The plants will need moisture around their roots so water as needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots because the plants are unable to absorb the water. Happy gardening, By Rachael Leverton

Wow! Wallingford WI celebrates in style OFWI Centenary Celebrations Recently Wallingford WI celebrated 100 years of the WI in Oxfordshire. At the popular Wallingford Band concert in the Castle Gardens, members showed how the WI has changed over the years. They exhibited information on recent WI campaigns and showed suggestions on improving the environment. Members were dressed in Edwardian costumes and gave out rosettes and bookmarks in WI colours. Home-made produce proved to be popular, with all proceeds going to the local Sue Ryder charity. Wallingford WI contribute greatly to the local community, taking a very active part in the ever-popular ‘Bunkfest’ by managing the sales and information tent. For further information, please contact wallingfordwi@oxfordshirewi.co.uk or have a look at www.wallingfordwi.co.uk where you can see the Programme for the coming months.

The

Landlord Battle against homelessness

Cotswold Sky

A landlord has revealed how he is taking steps to help reduce the threat of homelessness thanks to a special partnership with West Oxfordshire District Council.

The Transit of Mercury By coincidence Remembrance Day coincides with the rare event

The Planets

of Mercury aligning itself directly

Mercury

between the Sun and the Earth.

The transit of Venus occurs on November 11th. Following the transit Mercury can be observed early mornings above the south eastern horizon during November eventually disappearing by midDecember.

This is referred to as a transit and last occurred on May 9th 2016 and will not occur again until November 13th 2032.

In astronomy terms the transits of both Mercury and Venus are spectacular astronomical events from which early astronomers worked out the size of the Solar System and the distances of the Earth from the Sun. This was done by timing how long it took the inner planets to cross the Sun and then apply the timing with other known data. However; you need to be warned NOT TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN.

The transit can be observed safely only: 1 If you have an approved solar filter fitted if using a telescope. 2 “Or by projecting the Sun’s image through a small telescope onto a securely-held shaded piece of white card, located at a correctly focused distance from the telescope eyepiece” (courtesy of Astronomy Now). 3 Alternatively the safest way of all will be by using the internet. There will be numerous sites projecting the transit live. Timings: Transit commences at 12.35pm and is midway across the Sun at 3.20pm and will still be in transit at sunset which occurs at around 4.30pm.

Diary Winter Solstice – Sunday 22nd December 04.19 hours this is the shortest day and the longest night of the year but from this day on the days gradually get lighter.

Venus

Venus is very prominent during the early evening during November culminating on the 24th November at around 16.00 – 17.30 hours low in the south west within close proximity to Jupiter, Venus being the brightest by far. The planet continues its journey during December being very bright but setting at the relatively early hour of 18.00 hours. Mars

Mars rises early during November and December at around 5.00 hours and can be observed easily in the south east skies from between 06.00 and 07.00 hours. Jupiter

Jupiter can be seen early evenings in the south west to the upper left of the very bright Venus during the first 3 weeks of November. From the 24th November their positions will have changed with Jupiter being to the lower right of Venus. Jupiter sets at 17.00 hours during December. Saturn

Saturn is easy to identify during November following Jupiter but the beautiful planet sets early between 18.00 and 19.00 hours. By December it is to the upper left of Venus and sets around 18.00 hours. May I take this opportunity of wishing all our readers A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year –

Stephen Blake got in touch after hearing the Council was asking private landlords to make contact if they had homes available. Mr Blake had a property in Witney and shortly afterwards he was able to accommodate a couple who had been facing eviction. He said: “I had heard that the council was looking for emergency accommodation and I said I had a good house available. “Soon afterwards a couple moved in. They are both working, looking after the property well and talking about staying for the long-term. I am pleased I have been able to help them put a roof over their heads.” The relationship with private landlords is part of an initiative designed to help people address the barriers preventing people find a home in West Oxfordshire. Earlier this year a special forum was held involving landlords and housing agents with a view to providing more private rented accommodation for those on benefits and the housing waiting list. Cllr Steve Good, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “This sort of lateral thinking is producing real results and is helping people meet their housing needs. “The more we can do to help avoid the threat of homelessness for residents in the District the better and we look forward to working with more landlords in the near future.” The Council’s housing team is utilising funding awarded by the Ministry of Housing, Community and Local Government’s Private Rented Sector Access Fund in an innovative project which provides deposits and rent advances – a common barrier for people on the housing waiting list. A final piece of work aims to introduce a way of enabling private sector properties to be advertised on the system used by people searching and bidding for social housing. Landlords will benefit from the opportunity to advertise free of charge on the new system when it becomes available later in the year.
